1 GOLD Sri Lanka 2014 Challenge GOLD (Guiding Overseas Linked with Development) is a national level Girlguiding project sending young women to different countries to help develop Guiding in that country. The current GOLD project in Sri Lanka aims to build leadership skills and develop the Rainbow age section, called the Butterflies. Team Sri Lanka 2014 have created a badge to fundraise for our project. While you are welcome to buy a badge just as a collector, if you would like to earn it with your unit, there are a few ideas of activities to do below. Feel free to add your own or adapt them to suit the age and abilities of your girls. We suggest girls complete 5 activities to earn the badge. Activities with a * at the end have additional information included at the end of the pack.

2 Activities 1. Make some Straw butterflies to show how you will keep your promise. This is an activity the 2013 team did with the Butterflies in Sri Lanka. * 2. Sing Ride my Tuk Tuk. * 3. Make a trumpeting elephant. Check out this website for full instructions: elephant. * 4. Brownies is Sri Lanka are called Little Friends. Make a friendship bracelet for another girl in your unit. Why not use the colours of the Sri Lankan flag? 5. Sri Lankans eat lots of curry and LOTS of rice! Taste a range of different curries or try cooking your own Dahl. 6. Play Catch the Elephant s Tail. One person tucks a necker into the back of their trousers and uses their arm to make an elephant trunk. Everyone else has to try and catch it without being tagged by the trunk. If the elephant catches you, you must stand still and pretend to be a tree, as elephants love trees! The first one to grab the tail becomes the next elephant! 7. The 2013 GOLD team visited an elephant sanctuary where they made paper from elephant dung. Try making your own paper. You don t have to use dung! * 8. Previous GOLD teams have been offered lots of weird and wonderful fruits while in Sri Lanka. Try some fruits you ve never tried before, like papaya, dragonfruit, lychees or physalis. 9. There are 2 official languages spoken in Sri Lanka: Sinhala and Tamil, although English is often also spoken. Learn how to say hello, goodbye, please, thank you and count to 10 in one or both of these languages. * 10. Sri Lanka used to be part of the British Empire, when it was called Ceylon. Play Empire Wipeout. *

3 11. Women in Sri Lankan often wear Saris, including some special ones for guiding uniform! Learn how to wear a sari if you don t have access to one, use a bedsheet or other large piece of fabric to practise. * 12. Tea is a big export in Sri Lanka. Make a cup of tea for yourself or someone else using loose leaf tea. If you can find it, use Ceylon tea, which is the former name of Sri Lanka. 13. Many areas of Sri Lanka were devastated in 2004 by the Boxing Day Tsunami, which killed 35,000 Sri Lankans and displaced 516,000 more. Find out how tsunamis are made and how to spot the early warning signs. 14. The 2014 GOLD team will be developing leadership skills as part of their project. Play a game of Follow the Leader : all children all line up behind the chosen leader. The leader then moves around and all the children have to mimic her actions (clapping, hopping, dancing etc.). Any players who fail to follow or do what the leader does are out of the game. The last person standing other than the leader is now the new leader. Make sure everyone in the group gets a turn to be the leader! 15. Like all WAGGGS member organisations, Sri Lankan Girl Guides make their own promise. Learn the Sri Lankan promise for your equivalent section. How is it different from the promise we make in the UK? Which one do you prefer? How does the law differ? * 16. There are 4 main religions practised in Sri Lanka: Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. Find out how many different religions are practised by the members of your unit and discuss what makes them similar and what makes them different OR find out 3 facts about each of the 4 main religions of Sri Lanka. 17. Sri Lanka is an island. Play the Newspaper Island Game in pairs. * 18. Cricket is the most popular sport in Sri Lanka. Play a game of cricket in your unit. Don t worry about having the proper equipment you can use any bat and ball and could use a bucket or waste paper bin instead of stumps!

4 19. Sri Lanka has had a very turbulent history but is now peaceful. Find out about the conflicts that have taken place there and take some time as a unit to think about peace consider doing an Act of Peace between meetings. Check out this website for some suggestions: The Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation is the oldest radio station in Asia. Record (using a computer, smart phone or dictaphone) a short radio programme about a topic of your choice and share it with others in your unit. Perhaps you could do a pretend interview between a guide from the UK and one from Sri Lanka, or a short radio play about the other activities you have done for your challenge badge. 21. The national sport of Sri Lanka is volleyball. Play a game of volleyball in your meeting. Use a balloon instead of a ball if you want to make it easier or try it where everyone has to keep their feet still. 22. Sri Lanka has one of the highest literacy rates (people who can read and write) among developing nations, at 92.5%. Have a book club meeting, where all the members of your patrol/six/unit read the same book and then discuss it. 23. In August, Sri Lankans celebrate the Buddhist festival of Esala Perahera with fire dances, other cultural dances and highly decorated elephants. Print or draw an elephant template and decorate it with sequins, glitter and other collage materials.* 24. GOLD is one of many international opportunities offered by Girlguiding in the UK. Find out about the opportunities available to you now or when you are older and how you can apply to take part. 25. The 2013 GOLD team did a bug hunt as part of their training sessions. Take part in your own bug hunt! Either head outside to see how many bugs you can find, or search around the meeting place for hidden pictures of bugs.

6 Additional Information Straw Butterflies On coloured paper draw a basic butterfly shape about the size of your hand. You need to make sure that it only has wings and a body (see below for an example). Write your promise on one wing and on the other how you could keep your promise. This could be different things. Decorate the rest of the wing space and the other side. Take a straw and ask one of your adult leaders (if you are a Rainbow or Brownie) to cut the section above the bending point in half down towards the rest of the straw. There should then be two pieces still attached that you can bend out to make antenna. Make two horizontal cuts in the body section of your butterfly and push your straw through them. Leave enough at the bottom so that you can hold your straw. Run around with your butterfly to make its wings flap.

7 Ride My Tuk Tuk Stand in a circle facing inwards. All sing the song as 1 person skips round the inside with hands held like they are riding a bicycle: (to the tune of What Shall we do with the Drunken Sailor) Ride, ride ride my tuk tuk, Ride, ride ride my tuk tuk, Ride, ride ride my tuk tuk, This is how we ride (stop and face someone in the circle) Front to the front, to the front my tuk tuk (both shimmy shoulders forwards) Side to the side, to the side my tuk tuk (both turn sideways and shimmy shoulders) Back to the back, to the back my tuk tuk (turn backs to each other and shimmy shoulders) This is how we ride Both move into the middle of the circle and repeat until everyone is riding around! Paper Making Firstly, you need to make a frame to be able to squeeze more water out of the pulp. To do this, use an old wire coat hanger and a pair of old tights. Stretch the wire coat hanger into the shape you want and then stretch the tights over until they are taught. You might need to secure this with some strong tape. Once your frame is ready, it s time to make your paper pulp. Rip up some old paper into small bits. Either put it into a blender with warm water (about ⅔ full) or put it into a bucket and take it in turns to hand blend with the warm water. If you want to write on the paper you can also add two teaspoons of liquid starch to the mixture. Put your frame over a baking tray to catch any liquid that comes out, then pour your mixture onto the frame. You can add any extras such as flower petals etc to decorate your paper. Shake the frame from side to side gently to even out the pulp. Once the pulp is level, you have a few options: You can lift the frame out of the water and leave the paper to dry in the frame. You can also lift the frame out of the water and flip it over so that that paper comes out on to a flat surface such as a worktop. You can then gently dab it with a sponge or kitchen towel to absorb the excess water. You can use another baking tray to push down on top of it to squeeze out more of the water. You will need to leave it to dry in this position.

9 Empire Wipeout Write out the names of countries (both that were and were not in the British Empire) on sheets of paper and spread them out on the floor. Divide the group into teams of 2 4 and use a random method (e.g. dice) to select who goes first. The team has 30 seconds to select 6 countries that they think were part of the British Empire. They are then told how many are correct. The next team can change some or all of the countries and aims to get more correct. The winning team is the first to get 6 countries that were all part of the British Empire. To extend the game, those 6 countries could then be eliminated and the teams continue until they have found all the former empire nations. An alternative game would be to challenge teams to put countries into the order in which they became independent from Britain. 10 How to Wear a Sari Saris are made up of three pieces. There is a small top similar to a crop top in the UK which goes on first. Then you put on a underskirt, this is a long skirt that makes the sari opaque. Finally the seven metres of fabric are wrapped around: Starting on the right hip tuck the end of the fabric into the top of the skirt. Wrap it around the underskirt for one layer. Once the fabric is back at the front you need to make some pleats. Do this by concertinaing the fabric. Then tuck the concerteners into the underskirt at the front. It should sit roughly where your legs meet in the middle. Take the fabric around the back of the body once more. Once it reaches the right hip start to take the fabric up and over the left shoulder. This fabric would be pinned in place with a sari pin, this can be simple or elaborate. The Sri Lankan guiders have ones with elephants on! If you find that there isn t quite enough fabric to go over your shoulder gently pull the pleats along in the waistband of the underskirt. You might even need to pull a pleat or two out. For those not used to wearing a sari you will get hot quite quickly and you will find it difficult to walk in to begin with.

12 Newspaper Island Game Divide the group into pairs and give each pair one sheet of a broadsheet newspaper to stand on. Tell the group that due to global warming, the seas are rising and the island is getting smaller. Tear each piece of paper in half and get the pair to stand on the sheet again. Continue to make the island smaller and smaller. The winning team is the pair balancing on the smallest piece of paper without stepping off. Elephant Template (for Esale Perahera) See next page
