What a remarkable feat. The Classic, sponsored this year by Rip 10 Entertainment, is the longest running bowling league in the world. The 75th year has been dedicated to Gene Stus. Gene had been a member of the Detroit All-Star Classic for over 20 years. Stus has won many city, state and national titles. Highlighting a few are 12 PBA Senior Tour titles, five Michigan Majors titles, one City Masters title and one State Masters title. Stus is a member of four halls of fames USBC Hall of Fame, Michigan State Bowling Hall of Fame, Detroit Bowling Hall of Fame and the Michigan Majors Hall of Fame. Gene is one of the truly nice guys that never forgot his bowling roots. He has always maintained that bowling in the All-Star Classic and the Michigan Majors groomed him for the national level. Stus is home recuperating from a recent heart attack. Our prayers go out to Gene and his family for a quick recovery. (Continued on Page 9) PLEASE TAKE A COPY Compliments of This Proprietor USBC Announces 2010 Television Series on ESPN2 The United States Bowling Congress and ESPN will partner to bring a series of bowling events to a national television audience in The agreement calls for a multiweek package of telecasts on ESPN2 beginning in late April. The series will include championship-round coverage of USBC s Queens, Intercollegiate Team Championships and U.S. Women s Open tournaments, as well as Bowling s Clash of Champions. The agreement brings the ITC finals to a larger platform on ESPN2 and upgrades the U.S. Women s Open from a series of taped broadcasts to a live stepladder finals. The Queens returns again for a live telecast on ESPN2 as part of the agreement. Bowling s Clash of Champions moves to ESPN2 as the only weekend telecast in the series. One of USBC s primary goals is to increase visibility and excitement for the sport of bowling, USBC Vice President of Media Pete Tredwell said. Moving our collegiate championship to the ESPN family and ensuring both women s majors are live finals is a great step. The live stepladder finals of the Queens, which will be contested in a specially constructed bowling arena built for the USBC Women s Championships in El Paso, Texas, will start the series on April 28. 3 Wednesday, August 26, 2009 Changes in Store for Bowling Season METRODETROIT USBC NEWS By Association Manager Mark A. Martin For more information about the Metro Detroit USBC, call or visit THERE ARE five new rule changes that may affect league operations in the season. In all cases leagues will be been given the flexibility to adopt these rules, otherwise the USBC rule would be followed. USBC Rule 105 gives the league the flexibility for vacancy scores just as they are for absentee scores. Under previous rules a vacancy score would never be reduced as an absentee score generally is. With this rule a league can adopt a rule which would treat a vacancy score as an absentee score is. USBC Rule 107(c) allows a team using a substitute to be eligible for all high team prizes unless the league has a rule otherwise. USBC Rule 109(a) allows leagues the expanded flexibility to decide the minimum number for a legal line-up. USBC Rule 113(a) allows leagues to adopt a rule to declare co-champions. USBC Rule 113(b) allows leagues the opportunity to decide what type of tiebreaker best suits its needs. NEW THINGS TO BE AWARE OF EACH NEW bowling season brings changes and this year is no different. First thing to be aware of is that the high score application for those bowlers who roll a 300 game, 800 series or 900 series changed significantly this year. If the bowler selects a ring, there are now several new options to customize the ring. In order to minimize confusion and get the award to the bowler as soon as possible, BOTH SIDES of the form must be completed. The ring size and customization options are on the back side of the form. When faxing, both pages must be faxed in. This is critical to avoid unnecessary delays in processing. There is a simplified honor score award form on a single side for those not upgrading their award at under Forms. Again, it is critical that when the youth membership application cards are completed the SIZE must be indicated on the application. Applications without shirt sizes will cause delays in getting the shirts to the youth bowler. Speaking of the youth program, reservations will be taken for the MDUSBC Youth Tournament starting Sept. 14. This will give coaches and program directors the opportunity to schedule dates and times for the tournament in advance rather than putting down a date and hoping to get it. In order to keep the date and time reserved, the entries must be paid for by Dec. 11. MDUSBC TOURNAMENTS THE MDUSBC Kickoff Classic will take place on Oct. 3-4 at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights. The event is open to men and women with two divisions Open and Women s. Each division will bowl eight games of qualifying on Saturday, Oct. 3 with the top players coming back on Oct. 4 for match play with bonus pins culminating in a stepladder final to determine the champion of each division. The entry fee is $150 for the Open division and $85 for the Women s division. The defending champion of the Open division is Terence Haines. Once again this year the MDUSBC will offer an Adult/Youth Tournament. The event will be a doubles format with the teams competing for scholarship money only. One adult MDUSBC member and one youth MDUSBC member constitute a team. The cost to enter is $30 per team. Pete Brown Wins Third Title at Galaxy WOW, what a story book ending. Pete Brown not only beat some of the best bowlers in the state of Michigan, but something much more important. Brown was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He was operated on and had one-testicle removed three weeks ago plus radiation treatment last week. Brown then went out and won his third Budweiser Michigan Majors title at Galaxy Lanes in Grand Blanc. Dale Hofmeister paced the 53 entrants with a 1483 sixgame score. Brown overtook him in the three game semi-final round to earn the No. 1 seed in the stepladder finals. Ken Wyatt, a MMBA Hall-of- Famer, defeated Eddie Grace, , in the opening match. Wyatt then strung nine strikes starting in his third frame for a win over Mike Calhoun. Hofmeister eliminated Wyatt, Wyatt, after stringing all those strikes, never had a strike in the match. I don t recall ever having done anything like that before, said Wyatt. Brown looked like he was going to coast to the title as he led by 42 pins after five frames. Hofmeister showed why he is a Hall of Fame member with 14 titles by closing with By KEN CHARRETTE Member of the Greater Detroit Bowling Hall of Fame seven strikes to tie Brown with 226 and force a 9-10 frame rolloff. Brown had to throw two strikes in his 10th frame for a win and his story book win. I felt good or I never would have tried bowling, said Brown. This is just something special, especially with my parents coming down to root me on. I feel not only good but terrific now, said Brown. THE FINAL standings at Galaxy Lanes: Pete Brown (Holt) $1,000, Dale Hofmeister (Essexville) $600, Ken Wyatt (Sterling Heights) $400, Mike Calhoun (Wyandotte) $350, Eddie Grace (Howell) $300, John Essenmacher (Lenox) $200, Brian Newcomb (Romulus) $170, Doug Mazurco (Brownstown) $160, Aaron Lorincz (Belleville) $150, Scott Christie (Southgate) $140, Rick Gregor (Sterling Heights) 125, Mark Robertson (Wayne) $125, Craig Nidiffer (Trenton) $110, Eric Emmi (Harrison Twp.) $105. 5 Wednesday, August 26, 2009 Gavie Traditional Kick-Off off Bowling Season METRODETROIT USBC SCENE By Board Member Ann Block For more information about the Metro Detroit USBC, Call THE JOHN P. Gavie Memorial Tournament was held on Monday, Aug. 17th at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park. The Gavie is the traditional start of the Detroit bowling season. Every year the Who s Who of Detroit Bowling kick off the season at the Gavie. The tournament has long attracted bowlers from all over the state. This year s Gavie was an even bigger and more star-studded event than ever. The Gavie Tournament was the only interruption to the PBA World Series of Bowling being held this month at Thunderbowl Lanes. Several PBA stars were either bowling in the event or roaming the concourse during the tournament. For the name-droppers out there Doug Kent, Liz Johnson and Shannon Pluhowsky (who sported a cute new hairdo) were just a few bowling celebs at T-Bowl that evening. The Gavie is always a night to remember for bowling geeks like me. It is not just a tournament, it is a giant bowling party. The Gavie is kind of like a one-night bowling league of all of Detroit. Eastsiders, Westsiders, All- Stars, Proprietors, media, and bowling administrators all come together for an evening of bowling camaraderie. The Gavie is a tournament and there are winners and jackpots but it has evolved into much more than just an evening of skill. The Gavie Committee started a youth tournament a few years ago and the adult tournament supports it by means of raffle sales. The youth Gavie offers two Junior Gold spots one to a young man and one to a young lady and it was bowled this year on Saturday, Aug. 15th. The Gavie also holds a Senior Division Tournament and it was held in the afternoon of the same day. I wonder what John Gavie thinks about this little tournament that started 73 years ago. I think he would be proud of the work his nephew, Frank, and the rest of the committee put into it and he would be thankful for the long prestige list of sponsors still attached it. Long live the Gavie. FOR THE ladies: The Detroit 600 Club will bowl their annual tournament on Saturday, Oct. 3rd at 1 p.m. The tournament will be held at the club s host center Cherry Hill Lanes in Dearborn Heights. The total cost of the tournament and club dues is $22. The club is allowing members to go back two years on yearbook averages. This is being allowed for members who may have not bowled last season. Entries for the tournament have been mailed to members but can also be obtained by calling club secretary, Marion Saunders at Entries can also be ed to you from the club secretary. Entries will be accepted until one hour before the tournament start time. Shelby Lanes will host the Pontiac Women s 600 Club Best 3 out of 4 Handicap Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 18th. The tournament will start at 12 noon with an 11 a.m check-in. The tournament entry is $20. Annual membership in the Pontiac 600 is $3. Entries for the tournament close on Wednesday, Oct. 7th. Pontiac 600 Tournament entries are available at the MDUSBC office, by pontiac600club@yahoo.com, or by calling the club secretary Theresa Gates at (586) Both the Detroit and Pontiac 600 Bowling Clubs are affiliates of the National 600 Bowling Club. The National 600 has on their website the entries for the annual Mail-O-Graphic Tournament. This tournament is taken from scores you bowl right in your leagues. You can enter in each league you bowl in. There are five divisions including age divisions. The weeks for the tournament are in January with entries due a few weeks before. As a side note, remember the Michigan State USBC Women s Bowling Association pays for your lifetime membership in the NEW National 600 Bowling Club. 7 Wednesday, August 26, 2009 Strange Things Have Happened in Bowling s Past ONCE UPON a time. Strange things have happened in bowling s past, some lost to today s bowlers. There was a time when, in order to speed things up, By CHUCK PEZZANO Bowling Hall-of-Famer and Nationally Syndicated Columnist bowlers were filled out in the final frame. That happened when a game was a runaway, out of the wood, meaning all strikes could not pull out a win for the losing club. If the leadoff man recorded a spare, he would automatically be given 10 on his fill ball. Don t under estimate the effect. Even though it only meant a pin or two a game, that translated into a two or more point increase in average. But as you went down into the lineup it got worse, for the official records, and a lot better for the bowlers in the fourth position and more so for the anchor bowlers. They were often the recipients of a nobowl strikeout in the 10th. Now that could turn into a gift of 20 or more pins in a single game. Think about what a difference it has made to you in the 10th frame when you ran I into an open frame as compared to a triple strike in the closing canto. Don t get me wrong, this wasn t a constant occurrence, but even if done on occasion it had an effect on all averages, team and individual, and if teams used the same lineup positions, leadoff men had the most legitimate averages and anchor men had the most inflated. One of the key men in any lineup was the figure filbert who could quickly figure out the difference in wood, or being more precise, the exact pin difference between teams at any point. Scorers, at the bottom of each team s lineup, would record the mark count, a mark being a strike or spare. If one bowler records a seven on a spare or a double strike and an opponent fells nine, that s a quick two-pin difference, and in certain games one team could be ahead of another by 30 or more pins in wood count. For many years, young bowlers, and seniors too, made some extra spending or bowling money by keeping score in leagues, and that was particularly true in California. That is not necessary in these days of automatic scoring but that key counter is still important because many bowlers are slow in scoring, even slower in the projection of scores and the possibilities on both sides of competition. And that even goes for some of the announcers describing games on TV. Head-to-head match games were an important and exciting part of the sport and home and home matches, as few as five or 10 games, GET THE BOWLER S DIGEST ADVANTAGE CALL (586) FOR ADVERTISING INFO or as many as 50 to 100 games, were common, well attended, and well officiated. Sometimes, part of the agreement called for the pinboys to wear white gloves and footwear. Wasn t that a nice touch to the action? No. It was simply a better way to keep an eye 7 on the fast moving hands and feet of the human pinsetters to make sure that they always set up pins instead of somehow, by mistake of course, they either pushed or kicked a pin down here and there. And now you know a little bit more about the ancient art of scoring. Once upon a time. 8 8 TIPS FROM THE PROS By CHERYL DANIELS Member of the Professional Women s Bowling Association THIS ISSUE I will cover learning to customize your ball surface for the lane conditions you bowl on. Every serious league bowler should have an accessory kit which includes scissors, bowler s tape, easy slide, a towel, sandpaper or Scotch-Brite pads of different grits and some kind of skin protector patch for calluses. Keeping an accessory kit with these items will prepare you for most situations. In bowling, the biggest influence in determining whether your ball is going to hook or not is the surface of your bowling ball. Learning to match your ball surface to the conditions is very important in controlling your hook or lack of hook. When you buy bowling equipment, some balls have a shiny surface and some balls have a dull or semi-dull finish. Balls that have a shiny appearance have been polished or waxed and will skid longer. Wax or polish fills the pores in the shell of the ball and coats the ball surface reducing the lane friction, thus producing more skid. Whereas a dull ball finish is achieved by sanding the surface with sandpaper or Scotch-Brite pads. The dull surface is rougher and will produce more friction thus gripping the lane surface more and producing more hook. If you bowl in a center that uses a heavy oil pattern, you should use a ball with more surface. Most pro shops use different grits of sandpaper to achieve more or less hook. A sandpaper that is a 320 or 400 grit is used for oily lanes and a 500 to 600 grit is more for medium oiled lanes. When the lanes are very dry, your local pro shop can use very fine grits of sandpaper like 1000 and 1200 grit along with different polishes to shine your equipment or you can put your equipment in a Lustre King (if you can find one that works). When you need to scuff your ball on your own, I suggest using Scotch-Brite sanding pads that you can get from your local hardware store and keep in your accessory bag. Scotch-Brite pads can be found in a green pad (400 grit), burgundy pad (500 grit), grey pad (600 grit), and a white pad (1000 grit). During your warm-up before competition begins you can alter your surface by using the different pads. When you sand or scuff up the ball surface, the WIBC and ABC rule requires you sand the entire surface of the ball. Sometimes just a little more surface can make a big difference in getting your ball to break at the right point. ABC and WIBC rules will not allow you to alter your surface once competition begins. Q: What exercises are good for bowling? A: If you are a serious bowler who competes in long format tournaments, I suggest incorporating a fitness workout program with a personal trainer. I have personally belonged to a gym or health club for many years and currently work with personal trainer Dave Davis at Tel-Ex Powerhouse Gym in Southfield. Bowlers should focus on building strong legs (leg curls, leg extensions, leg press, etc.). Most women should do exercises to strengthen their wrists (wrist curls). Bowlers should try to do exercises that don t build a lot of bulk and inhibit mobility. Remember to always consult a physician before beginning an exercise program. 9 Wednesday, August 26, Bowling s Origins Traced Back to Egyptian Times Fact. Almost 70 million people in the United States bowl during a year. Fact. More than three million compete regularly in league play certified by the United States Bowling Congress. Staff at USBC Headquarters in Arlington, Texas, works closely with about 4,000 local associations to serve the three million members. Bowling has soared into the upper echelon of sports, setting a steady pace by blending Detroit All-Star Classic 75th Season Underway (Continued from Page 1) The Classic got off to a rousing start with two 300 games by Randy Warnken and Bill DeFrance in the very first game. The two defending champions, Eastridge Insurance/Storm/Roto Grip (Winter) and Plaza Lanes (Spring) picked up where they left off. Plaza Lanes Warnken had in a 786 series which was high for the night and led his team to a three-game sweep over first-year team Premier Bowlers.com/Columbia 300. Welcome to the league. Eastridge Insurance, led by Tim Bishop 719, Harry Sullins 707 and Larry Walker 701, had the high series of 3465 in winning two games from Cozy Inn/Thunderbowl Lanes. Another perennial powerhouse, Ansara Restaurants, led by Chris Nielson 761 and Ken Wyatt 703, swept three games from Red Robin/Sunnybrook Lanes, The other three-game sweep was by All Star Grille/Vision Lanes over Ren Enterprises/Astro Lanes, led by Steve Klein 767 series. Welcome back, Steve, after a six-year absence. Another new sponsor 2 Booli Med Eats/ Country Lanes, led by Glenn Pilon 747, won two games from Red Robin/DBT Awards/ Charrette State Farm. Bill DeFrance had 738 and Chuck Duvall 708 for Red Robin. Another new sponsor R&T Insurance led by Randy Churchill Jr. 711 and Trey Raynes 703, won two games from Hamtramck Singles/Eastown Printing. Chris Simonson was high with 671. The next three-week schedule includes stops at Wayne Bowl in Wayne, Hazel Park Bowl in Hazel Park and Regal Lanes in Warren. strong organization with modern centers in which to participate. Although the sport now appeals to people from all walks of life, entering a bowling center today would give few clues to its origin. Bowling has been traced to articles found in the tomb of an Egyptian child buried in 5200 B.C. The primitive implements included nine pieces of stone at which a stone ball was rolled, the ball having first to roll through an archway made of three pieces of marble. Another ancient discovery was the Polynesian game of ula maika, also utilizing pins and balls of stone. The stones were to be rolled at targets 60 feet away, a distance which today still is one of the basic regulations of tenpins. Bowling at pins probably originated in ancient Germany, not as a sport but as a religious ceremony. Martin Luther is credited with settling on nine as the ideal number of pins. Hist or y The game moved throughout Europe, the Scandinavian countries, and finally to the United States, with the earliest known reference to bowling at pins in America made by author Washington Irving about 1818 in Rip Van Winkle. The game was being played throughout the world and rules were different almost everywhere. Even basic equipment was not the same. In fact, why and when the extra pin was added from the European game of ninepins to the American game of tenpins still is a mystery. Regardless of how the game came into being, it became so popular by mid-19th century indoor lanes were being built throughout Manhattan and the Bronx and on westward, in Syracuse, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Chicago, Milwaukee and other cities with large German populations. In 1875, delegates from nine bowling clubs in New York and Brooklyn met in Germania Hall in the Bowery and organized the National Bowling Association. This was the first attempt to bring order out of chaos. Disagreement raged between East and West, principally the alignment of New York State bowlers against everyone else to the west. On Sept. 9,1895, the American Bowling Congress was organized in Beethoven Hall in New York City. A group of 40 women, encouraged by proprietor Dennis J. Sweeney of St. Louis, met at Sweeney s establishment in 1916 and formed what was known as the Women s International Bowling Congress. LANES COMPLETELY REFINISHED!
