B C G B A N E W S British Crown Green Bowling Association Issue 19 / October 2012 CHAMPION of Champions JOHN FINCH upset all the odds to lift the 2012 BCGBA Champion of Champions trophy, sponsored by mediabox.co.uk, at a packed Waterloo Hotel bowling green on a glorious sunny Blackpool day. The Merseyside champion fully deserved his victory as he claimed the scalps of Callum Wraight, Chris Brown and Simon Coupe on his way to victory. Twenty-four hours later, Katrina Earl claimed her first ladies Champion of Champions title, also sponsored by mediabox.co.uk, in her married name to add to her back-to-back victories in 1998 and 1999 when she was known as Katrina Caley. Yet again the ladies suffered as the torrential rain nearly caused the abandonment of the competition. The green was almost unplayable and parts had to be roped off due to its condition. 1 P a g e

FINCH MAKES HIMSELF KNOWN IN CHAMPS VICTORY John Finch is flanked by John Nash (left) and Richard Taylor from sponsors mediabox.co.uk who joined BCGBA President, Peter Kelly, in making the presentations He started out as a virtual unknown but by the end of the day the name of John Finch was firmly etched in the memories of those in attendance at the 39th running of the BCGBA Champion of Champions. Finch started the day as a 50/1 outsider and began most of his games as underdog. His opening game was against the Isle of Man champion, Glynn Hargraves, and after 18 ends Finch led 15-5 with just two doubles on the card. A brief run with the jack got the Manxman up to 9 before the Merseyside champion ran out to game. His next match would test his character as he took on Callum Wraight who had qualified four times over for the final 32. His wins in the Shropshire Merit, Coors Meols Brace Open, Brighouse Classic and Pudsey Classic made him a firm favourite but after the close opening exchanges Finch pulled away from five across into a commanding 18-8 lead. Wraight finally got hold of the jack to go on an 8-break to get to within two of Finch but his efforts ended in vain as Finch finished with three singles to reach the quarterfinals. Next up was Paul Lamb, North Midlands Merit winner and runner-up in the Taylor Bowls Tour finals played on the Waterloo green the previous day. Lamby was attracting plenty of attention with the bookmakers and after a shaky start which saw him slip 7-2 behind he almost got level at 6-7. Singles prevailed at the next three ends with Finch holding a 9-7 advantage before he got on his favoured corner mark to leave Lamb stuck on 7. Chris Brown (South Yorkshire Merit) was in fine form with two single figure wins in his three previous games on the day. He soon fought back from 8-2 down to lead 9-8 in the semi-final and then 13-9 down to lead once again But once Finch was able to settle on his mark he forged ahead to allow Brown just one more point in his victory. In the other semi-final Spen Masters winner, Simon Coupe, ended hopes of an all-merseyside final with the defeat of Danny Barwise who won on the Waterloo green in the Spring competition. Coupe scored eight doubles on his way to a victory. The sun was still shining as John Finch and Simon Coupe took to the green with a packed Waterloo awaiting the start of the final with great anticipation. Could Finch pull off another remarkable victory or would Mr Waterloo prove a game too far with his vast experience of the Waterloo green? Coupe soon raced into an 8 nil lead and pushed on to an 11-5 advantage before once again Finch found his mark which had served him so well during the day. A 13-break gave him an unassailable lead but you can never discount Coupe and he was soon closing in on Finch at Finch held his nerve to record two singles in the final three ends to set the large crowd, and his Wirral supporters, into rapturous applause for a tremendous all round performance to give him the title of 2012 BCGBA Champion of Champions. Richard Taylor and John Nash from sponsors mediabox.co.uk accompanied the BCGBA President, Peter Kelly, in making the presentations. mediabox.co.uk will sponsor the Champion of Champions through to 2014 and, apart from a cash injection, will also provide shirts for all those who qualify for the Blackpool finals. mediabox.co.uk ran a programme draw at this year s competition and the lucky winner was Jill Thompson from Llandudno. 2 P a g e

RACHEL & GREG WIN MIXED PAIRS The curtain came down on the 2012 British Crown Green Bowling Association season with the Centenary Mixed Pairs, generously sponsored by Pat & John Crowther. Thirty-two pairs should have turned up at Donnington Wood Bowling Club, Shropshire, where the greens were in tremendous condition. Unfortunately, three pairs - one each from Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Warwick & Worcester failed to turn up. One pairing to benefit from a Bye were defending champions, Jenny Moore & John Kennish. The Isle of Man pairing showed no effect from lack of match practice as they comfortably despatched Sylvia Alexander & Gerald Merry (Cheshire) 21-9 before bowing out to South Yorkshire s Kerry & Chris Brown Lynsey Gorman & Terry Glover (Merseyside), winners in 2010 and runners-up last year, made an early exit to Barbara Harman & Colin Crompton (North Lancs & Fylde) while the 2008 winners and runners-up in Lynn Pritchatt & Mel Evans (Staffordshire) made their exit in round two. The 2012 winners came from Warwick & Worcester with Rachel Bennett & Greg Smith adding to the Waterloo Mixed Pairs title won earlier in the season. After a 21-8 opener, they then tamed The Beast, Wayne Ditchfield and his partner Kath Beauty Garner (North Lancs & Fylde), having been level at 12 across. Another win, this time against Hannah Brown & Craig Rumney (South Yorkshire) put them in the semi-final where it looked as if the competition was about to end for them. Trailing Margaret O Donovan & Stuart Thompson (Yorkshire) they drew level at 17 across before falling down. But, a second wind saw them finish with two doubles to secure their final place. In the final they would meet Chris & Kerry Brown, who, having received an opening round Bye, were rarely troubled in their first game of the day. Lynn & Stuart Harrie (North Midlands) found the husband & wife partnership in top form in their victory. After putting out the defending champions they faced the North Lancs & Fylde pairing of Barbara Horman & Colin Crompton in the last four. From 14 across, the South Yorkshire duo ran out to game and a place in the final. The Browns opening 7-3 advantage was soon cancelled out with a single, a three and a four by the midlands duo. The Browns pulled back to but Bennett & Smith won five of the next six ends to get close to victory at The final four ends were shared but with the Browns being reduced to singles a double at the last end secured victory for Bennett & Smith Bennett & Smith s win ensures that a new name has been engraved on the trophy each year in the competition s six year history. 4 KATRINA RECORDS THIRD TRIUMPH IN LADIES CHAMPIONS The British Crown Green Ladies have an uncanny knack of finding the wettest day of the year on which to play their Champion of Champions. Despite the horrendous weather the sport has experienced this season, the ladies still managed to somehow find the worst day of 2012 to play their season s finale. Talks are already underway with a leading manufacturer to supply coloured sou westers and wet gear next season with Flood line mentioned as a possible sponsor! To make matters worse, the previous day the men once again basked in glorious sunshine for their showpiece event. Heavy overnight rain led to a damp start but as soon as the first competitors took to the green the rain started to fall. By the time Katrina Earl and Karen Galvin (Cheshire Merit) took to the green the rain was bordering on torrential. Both ladies had only just dried out from their Ladies Waterloo final which was played in similar conditions. With Karen leading 12-4 it was looking like she was about to get her revenge on her defeat in their previous meeting but Katrina fought back to go in front at and onto a victory. Once the first round games had all been completed a meeting was called of the last sixteen players to decide on whether to proceed with the competition. The majority wanted to continue and with part of the green roped off play resumed. From here on it just became a contest as to who could throw the furthest with the flooded green bringing the bowls to a virtual standstill. Both Katrina and her final opponent, Lynsey Gorman, romped into the final with an almost unblemished record of single figure victories between them. Katrina won 21-4 in her second round game then 21-2 in the third but had to fight all the way to get past Emma Thornton (Lisdoonie Cup) in her semi-final. Lynsey, only had twenty-one scored against her in total in her previous four games with two 21-4 s, a 21-6 and a 21-7 winning cards on her way to the final. However, in the final it was another single figure card with Waterloo Ladies champion Katrina inflicting a 21-4 defeat on Lynsey who had double qualified by winning the Wirral Merit and New Longton Open. The presentation was made by Joan Lewis in her final duty as President accompanied by John Nash from sponsors mediabox.co.uk. The 2012 competition had, in addition to Katrina and Karen Galvin, three other former winners. Defending champion, Maureen Perkins (Freeport Fleetwood Festival), won her first round game but bowed out in round two. BCGLBA Merit winner, Linda Williams, couldn t add to her 2010 success finding Katrina in top form in the last eight while 2006 champion, Pat Roscoe (Greater Manchester Merit) made a first round exit. 5 STILL NO SMOKING With the invention of the electronic cigarette, guidance has been sought on the use of such aides whilst on the green. It is believed that whilst the electronic version does not give off any smoke it does give off a vapour with a similar density to smoke. After discussion at the last Management Committee Meeting, it was agreed that the electronic cigarette will be interpreted as smoking on the green and as such will be banned. It was agreed to amend the current law at the next possible opportunity. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING Members of the Management Committee are reminded that their next meeting will take place on Saturday 17th November. The meeting will take place at Winnington Park with the usual start time of 9.30am. It is likely to be a long meeting so don t make plans for the Saturday night! GREATER MANCHESTER ON THE BRINK Greater Manchester County Bowling Association is in danger of folding in November. At a recent Delegates meeting the four officers voted to put forward to the Greater Manchester Annual General Meeting on Thursday 15th November that the Association is closed down as nobody is willing to take on the secretary's role. Current incumbent, David Williams, is standing down this year and he has undertaken more than one job, working tirelessly over the years, with very little help. There are also other important positions that need filling to enable the Association to continue. Now, the game s top player, Gary Ellis, has sprung in to action and arranged a meeting on Sunday 4th November, 11am, at Chadderton Cot (also known as The Carpet ) for anybody who may be interested in helping Greater Manchester remain in existence. Hopefully, there will be enough interest/people willing to take on a responsibility to help the Association through next season and beyond. If you have any ideas, or want to help in any way, please come to this meeting. If you want to help but can t attend on the day please give Gary a call on to register your interest. The level of interest is effectively going to decide whether Greater Manchester can continue so please do attend/respond if you wish for this to happen - don t leave it to other people. The bottom line is, if there is not enough interest - the county WILL fold. ASHLEY AND ROSS HOPING FOR CHAMPS INVITE ASSUMING all the competitions included in the qualification for the 2012 Champion of Champions are included in next year s list - main and reserve - then we already have our first two names for the 2013 event. Ashley Daykin and Ross Dunkley were victorious in the Coors Pudsey Classic and George Masters respectively and both thwarted Gary Ellis from adding to his season s toll of 17 titles. Ellis had won the George Masters four times in the competition s previous six years but this didn t worry Ross Dunkley who won by a margin. Ashley Daykin was one of the last to join this year s line-up, coming in as reserve following his win at the Carlsberg Moorside Classic, and won the Pudsey final The full list is usually approved at the February Management Committee Meeting. 5 P a g e

A BUSY YEAR FOR OUR COACHES The Annual General Meeting of the BCG Coaches takes place on Saturday 24th November at Winnington Park, Northwich, starting at 10am. Coaches will hear from the British Crown Green Bowling Association National Coaching Administrator, Alan Tizard, of another busy year. Alan (pictured) and his coaching teams throughout the country have held 28 full day Coaching Seminars across 9 Counties. Seven have been held in Staffordshire, four in Cheshire, three in Cumbria, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Warwick & Worcester and Yorkshire with Merseyside and North Lancs & Fylde hosting one each. 21 coaches have been upgraded to Level 2 so far this season, while Assessment Days for upgrades are still being held. At the North Leeds Bowling Club, where we met the nonagenarians at the seminar in April, their recently held over 90s competition was reported on TV. Unfortunately for them that day turned out like the seminar, with the rain causing the event to be abandoned after lunch. Alan looks forward to returning there early next season. It was pleasing to be asked to run a Coaching seminar at Barkers Park Bowling Club in Rotherham, at the end of August. In 2010, our coaches had spent every Tuesday Morning for 6 weeks, coaching 24 beginners. This group formed the basis of a new club which in 2011 had 44 members. For winter bowling, this increased to 55 and in the 2012 season, the club boasted over 90 members, nearly all being new to the sport, with a number of them playing league bowls. All is not doom and gloom for bowling clubs, with a few willing members and some help, clubs can develop. PROMOTION OF CONTESTS REMINDER Please don t forget that if you are running a competition, organisers inviting or accepting entries from outside the County staging the event, after applying to their County Association for approval, must then apply to the BCGBA and pay an Annual affiliation fee of 6.00 (to the BCGBA CEO) at least 28 days before the commencement of the contest. On all entry forms and all forms of publicity relating to the event the words "Affiliated to and Approved by the British Crown Green Bowling Association", the maximum number of entries, the entry fee and the total prize money should be included and promoters accepting female entries must clearly indicate that it is a mixed competition. The application must state the name of the Club and venue where the contest is being held and such contests shall be deemed 'Open Contests'. Please don t forget that no final stages or qualifying rounds of open competitions shall be contested on the date of and within the County Association where the BCGBA Senior Merit Finals are taking place and approval will not be granted at either County or BCGBA level for any contest which does not possess the Public Liability cover defined in Bye Law 5(b). Competition organisers are already advertising their competitions for 2013, many of which are already full. The Spen Masters, Hillcrest, Olympic Classic and Tony Pagett Open are already operating a Reserve List. There are, however, a number of places remaining in the Meole Brace Open at Shrewsbury which is usually a regular in the Champion of Champions list of qualifiers with the last thirteen winners taking their place in Blackpool. Qualifying takes place over the weekends of 23rd/24th and 30th/31st March with four sessions on each day at 10:30am, 11:15pm, 1pm and 2pm. The last thirty-two return on Sunday 7th April for an 11:30am start. Entry is 15 per player with the winner collecting a cool 1500 with prize money paid out to the last 64. Further details can be obtained from organiser, Barry Jennings, on P a g e

LADIES COULD BE IN FOR A LONG MEETING The British Crown Green Ladies Bowling Association Annual General Meeting takes place on Sunday 4th November at Winnington Park, Northwich. The meeting gets underway at 10am and the agenda will include 19 items. Details of the Notices of Motion received are: COMMITTEE 1. Bye-Laws Page 229 Insert a New Bye-Law after Bye-Law 16 and re-number subsequent bye-laws. To read All prize winners to be responsible for the engraving of trophies.. Reason: To ensure trophies are brought back engraved to be presented to the winner the following year and to assist with costs. 2. Champion of Champions Page 230 Rule 1 line 2 Insert the word County between 22 and merit. Reason: To make it clearer to County Associations that the invitation to the Champion of Champions is for the County Merit winner in each County. 3. Senior County Championship Page 233 Rule 8 line 6 After winners will carry insert, if still a draw then the team with the best winner, if still a draw then the team with the second, third, fourth best winner etc.. Reason: To give clear guidelines as to what will happen in the event of a draw at the semi-final or final stage of the competition. 4. Senior County Championship Page 233 Rule 11 line 1 After venue insert a full stop and delete the remainder of the sentence. Reason: To make it clear to County Associations who must provide the referees for Senior County Championship matches. 5. Veterans County Championship Page 238 Insert a New Rule 8 To read Any team withdrawing after the County Secretaries Meeting in March will be fined Reason: In recent years teams have dropped out of the competition at the last minute which spoils it for the other teams in the competition and creates problems for the officials. COVENTRY & DISTRICT 6. Senior County Championship Page 231 Rule 1 On line 2 after two insert named. On line 4 after bowlers insert a full stop and delete the remainder of the sentence and insert a new sentence to read Definition of a Home bowler - one who pays a subscription to a bowling club or to a bowling section of a sports or social club or is a member of an organisation which utilises the green of such club or section.. On line 9 after exchanged insert and highlighted on the programmes as the home bowler. On line 10 after the insert Ladies. Reason: This rule amendment will bring the definition of a Home Bowler in line with the Men s Senior County Championship Rule. It s hard to police the rule as it is. Who knows who is a member of what club within the county. Someone may have changed the club for whom they play bowls for but still remain a member of the Sports / Social Club. With the loss of many bowling greens, rather than losing teams and players, members of such clubs are hiring greens at other clubs so they can continue to play bowls under their original club name. These members would not be eligible to play on any other green at their new club, but for Legal Liabilities they have to be a member of the Sports / Social Club. It is ridiculous that a person is classed as a home bowler on the green of a club of which they are a social member. 7. Senior County Championship Page 232 Rule 2 Delete the first sentence and replace with All home and away matches to be played on the date specified by the Association and on the green of a club which is primary affiliated to the Ladies County Association, all games commencing at 2.00pm.. 7 P a g e

Reason: There is no rule within the Ladies Senior County Championship Rules that defines which greens each county can select as a home green. This amendment is quoted within the men s County Championship Rule 1 as to which green they may select to play their championships on. As there is no written rule regarding which greens each county can use, when questioned nobody, including BCGLBA committee members can define what green can be used. If there is no rule, because counties can use any green with the permission of the Bowling / Sports or Social Club, is it acceptable for a county to waive their rights of playing 2 home bowlers so as to use the green of a club which is affiliated to a neighbouring county. (If this is the case, revert to Rule 17, A green may only be used by one County Association during any one season.) Who knows what green each county are going to use. 8. Senior County Championship Page 234 Rule 17 Delete the second sentence. Reason: How does one county know what greens other counties are going to use for that season. This rule penalises smaller counties such as Coventry & District, North Warwickshire & Dudley & District who only have 15, 16 and 18 clubs affiliated to their counties. They are more likely to be affected by the rule as it stands than Greater Manchester who have 133 clubs affiliated. The fact that the smaller counties have fewer greens to select from to start with is greatly affected if their neighbouring county is also eligible to use the green and actually do so. BURTON & DISTRICT 9. Senior County Championship Pages 231 Rule 1 line 5 After match insert but to exclude Social Members who are not members of the bowls section. Reason: There are quite a few number of County Players who are Social Members of different clubs mainly during the winter to participate in the indoor games i.e. darts, dominoes, crib etc. These members are not allowed on the bowling green and we feel that it is unfair to dictate to people where they can or cannot join due to being classed as a home bowler when they never play on the green. YORKSHIRE 10. Bye-Laws Page 227 New Bye-Law Insert between existing Bye-Laws 14 & 15 a new Bye-Law to read All qualifiers in the BCGLBA Merit, Dorothy Piearce Pairs and County Average Winners Classic should receive some prize money. Reason: The qualifiers may have bowled several games in their counties to qualify and apart from the host county some will have travelled many miles for the final day. Rising costs of travel may cause lower entries if first round losers do not receive some remuneration. If prize money is not to be paid to qualifiers then this needs to be specified on the entry form. 11. Senior County Championship Page 233 Rule 9 Delete the existing rule and replace with The final of the Waterloo Cup shall be played between the losing semi-finalists of the County Championship.. Reason: In its present form the two finalists are actually playing for 5th / 6th place position in the county rankings, as only runners-up in round robin stage. Winner in existing format receives more prize money than losing semi-finalists in County Championship and yet these teams are third and fourth in the rankings. 12. Senior County Championship Page 233 New Rule Insert between existing rules 9 & 10 a new rule to read Neither the County Championship nor the Waterloo Cup shall be played on the same date as the BCGBA Senior Mens or Junior County Championship Finals. Reason: In 2011 both the Ladies and Mens County Finals were played on the same date; this year, 2012, the Ladies and BCGBA Junior Finals were played on the same date. For a county with teams at both events considerable problems arise as follows: insufficient Officials to organise and attend both events satisfactorily, welfare concerns in that families have participants at both events thus dividing family support but more importantly Juniors having to travel without any parental support, reduced number of spectators / income at both events, Counties are being penalised for being successful, Bye law 3 page 226 of the BCGLBA states The object of the BCGLBA shall be to promote and organise inter county bowling for ladies and juniors. A clash of fixtures contravenes this Bye law and certainly does nothing to promote the game. 8 P a g e

13. Senior County Championship Page New Rule Add a new rule to read The finals of the County Championship and Waterloo Cup shall be played on home and away venues of the two competing counties. Reason: Against being held at the Waterloo, Blackpool because dates of finals are dictated by availability of the Waterloo and always clash with BCGBA finals (2011 with the Senior Mens Championship, 2012 with the Juniors), gates at both events are affected, cost of travel for both players and spectators, cost of entrance 3.00 compared with 1.00 at present in county matches, restrictions on food / drink at the Waterloo and long drawn out match with 24 jacks. For being held at home and away venues, more spectators, income from home gate, home raffle and home refreshments, 12 jack format more interesting and exciting and has been used in all other rounds of the competition. 14. Junior County Championship Page 235 Rule 2 line 5 Replace 18 with 16. Reason: The competition in its existing format is a duplication, albeit as a smaller version, of the BCGBA Junior County Championship. As such, the younger bowlers, aged 16 and less, are often dwarfed both physically and in ability by the 17 / 18 year olds, and consequently the encouragement and development of our younger bowlers is delayed. Further, the stronger counties in the BCGBA competition will dominate this competition in its present format every year again discouraging the development of the younger bowlers in other counties. In 2010 when the age was 16 more of the younger bowlers competed and gained county experience, surely an outcome we all wish to support. LANCASHIRE 15. All BCGLBA competitions be more centralised. Lack of time and cost of travel are the main reasons fewer and fewer ladies are entering these competitions 16. All BCGLBA County teams be divided into Northern and Southern areas, for a trial next season. The divisional line to be decided by an independent person. All Northern teams to play each other and all Southern teams to play each other then winners of N/S divide have a play off for County Championship at the end of the season. This would cut down travelling time and expenses. It may also encourage more ladies to participate in County Games. SOUTH YORKSHIRE 17. County Championship Final and Waterloo Cup Final Winners of all four sections play off - Winners play for County Championship - Runners-up play for Waterloo Cup. 18. County Championship Final and Waterloo Cup Final All Finals for above competitions to play on Home and Away basis. Enables each County to run own raffles for funds and we are not dictated to regarding taking own food and drinks to match. BURTON & DISTRICT 19. Proposal that the format for scoring to be changed to 1 point per winning end Home and Away. 2 points for winning the aggregate Home and Away and 3 extra points if you win the aggregate Home and Away. This means that in every County match you have the potential of receiving 31 points per match. Reason: You can have 16 winners out of 24 games and still loose if you have a few close games and a couple of heavy losses. We think this is a fairer way of scoring and would give players more of an incentive. The website of the British Crown Green Bowling Association 9 P a g e

RISK AWARENESS - GROUNDS MAINTENANCE The following is a statement from Endsleigh Insurance: At Endsleigh, we recognise that many clubs rely upon the goodwill of club members and volunteers for the maintenance of bowling greens and surrounding grounds. Whilst the liability insurance we arrange for all BCGBA clubs is designed to fully protect your interests should an incident arise resulting in injury for which the club is legally liable, the clubs themselves do have a responsibility to ensure that their green keeping equipment is well maintained and safe for use. It is also important that clubs recognise that they are responsible for ensuring that club members and volunteers who are carrying out any maintenance work receive adequate training in the safe use of maintenance equipment. These steps are designed to help minimise the risk of a club member or volunteer suffering any injury as a result of either using faulty or unsafe equipment, or indeed through using the equipment incorrectly. Such situations could give rise to the club being sued for damages. To highlight the importance of this we would like to share with you an actual claim currently being dealt with on behalf of a member club. The claim has resulted from serious injury to a club member's hand whilst he was using a scarifier provided to him by his club. Having investigated the circumstances of this incident, the Insurers have reported that the scarifier was faulty, no safety equipment had been provided, despite the manufacturer recommending that gloves be worn and the club member had not received any training in the safe use of the equipment. In light of the above, the Insurers are unable to defend the claim on behalf of the club, and are therefore negotiating settlement on the best possible terms. The claim currently carries a reserve of 16,500. The damages and costs incurred in relation to this claim will be covered under the Liability insurance arrangements that we arrange for the British Crown Green Bowling Association, its affiliated clubs and members. We felt it was appropriate to share this information with you to help prevent similar accidents through a culture of risk awareness.
