1 BRITISH CROWN GREEN BOWLING ASSOCIATION 2015 CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS Saturday 26th September, 10am Waterloo Hotel, Blackpool The line-up is complete for the 2015 FLOWFIT BCGBA Champion of Champions after the last of the qualifying competitions, the Midland Masters and Rastrick Classic, declared their winners. At the start of September Tommy Johnstone qualified for Blackpool with a thumping 21-7 defeat of Andy Cairns in the Spen Masters Final, Cairns having just returned from a six week lay-off due to a minor operation. 50/1 outsider, Gareth Lally, was a worthy winner of the Isle of Man September Festival, finally managing to pull away from Martin Gilpin to win in a match that was close throughout. Greg Smith had a remarkable week when he lifted the Co-operative funeralcare Autumn Waterloo and Talbot Trophy in the space of twenty-four hours and followed that a few days later by winning the Midland Masters with wins over Ross Dunkley (21-19), Callum Wraight (21-7) and Wayne Rogers (21-12) respectively. Callum Wraight, already first reserve, put his Talbot Trophy nightmare behind him to make sure of his qualification by winning a thriller against Graeme Wilson in the Brighouse Classic. Simon Coupe and John Bailey completed the last pieces of the Champion of Champions jigsaw as they benefited from Smith s triple success. Coupe, the defending champion, beat his North Lancs & Fylde county colleague, Wayne Ditchfield, in the Rastrick Classic final while Bailey s success in winning the Carlsberg Richmond Classic in July proved a wait worthwhile. Rob Roden (Shropshire Merit) v Craig Barker (Staffordshire Merit) Billy Speed (Lancashire Merit) v Leighton Roberts (Welsh Merit) Mike Leach (North Lancs Merit/BCGBA Vets Championship) v Dan Petcher (Tony Pagett Open) Tom Vickers (Cheshire Merit/BCGBA Flowfit Senior Merit) v Russell Pegram (CCF Open) Chris Kelly (Cleckheaton Sports Classic) v David Poole (South Yorkshire Merit) Steve Porter (Cumbria Merit) v Chris Mordue (Fortis Spring Waterloo/British Parks Merit) Callum Wraight (Brighouse Classic/Wharton Cons Open) v Steve Barber (Derbyshire Merit) Graeme Wilson (Yorkshire Merit) v Tommy Johnstone (Spen Masters) Steve Copeland (Greater Manchester Merit) v Lee Dale (Potteries & District Merit) Gareth Lally (Isle of Man September Festival) v Dave Bradford (Isle of Man Merit) John Bailey (Carlsberg Richmond Classic) v Gary Ellis (Hillcrest Classic/Navigation & Railway Open) Andy Hughes (Meole Brace Open) v Conor Chamberlain (Pudsey Classic) Josh Hale (Warwick & Worcester Merit) v Andy Gibbs (North Midlands Merit) Simon Coupe (Rastrick Classic) v Ben Stanway (BCGBA Briggs Equipment UK Junior Merit) Greg Smith (Waterloo H cap/talbot/midland Masters) v Andy Hayes (Fleetwood Bowls Festival) Matt Gilmore (Merseyside Merit) v John Kennish (Isle of Man June Festival) 1 P a g e

The midlanders dominated from start to finish and were 64 shots up after the first four blocks at each venue. Cheshire chose Winnington Park as their home venue but were on the back foot from the off. Steve Darling came off the substitute s bench for the defending champions to open proceedings with a 21-7 card and with Ben Harris 15-3 up and Tom Palmer 14 nil in the middle four things could not have got any worse for the former champions. Jason Cornes fought back against Harris to go in front at while Andy Hamman scored a creditable 17 against Palmer. But there was some consolation as Danny Nixon turned in a Man of the Match performance as he won Over at British Oak, it was a constant stream of 21 s from the home side with only Glynn Cookson breaking down the fortress with a card. Lee Kington handed in the best card of the match, 21-6, while Neil Clarke was an impressive 21-9 winner. A tremendous performance from a quality youthful team. It is now up to Cumbria, North Midlands or Staffordshire to stop them from claiming a fifth consecutive title next season. 3 P a g e

5 CENTENARY MIXED PAIRS END THE SEASON A busy season in the British Crown Green Bowling Association calendar comes to a climax with the Centenary Mixed Pairs, sponsored by CHERISH PROTECT in association with VITALITY HEALTH LIFE. 32 qualifying pairs will travel to Elland Cricket, Athletic & Bowling Club (HX5 0QY) in Yorkshire on Saturday 3rd October (10am) for this popular format of our great game. Already through are former winners, Lynsey Gorman & Terry Glover (2010) and Kath Garnet & Wayne Ditchfield (2013). The draw will be posted on the BCGBA website as soon as the full list of qualifiers is known. WELL-KNOWN BOWLERS PUBLISH THEIR BOOKS Two of our well-known bowlers both have books out at the moment. Keith Rudman has released a book about his lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis while Hugh Hornby s book Bowled Over is a fascinating book of bowling greens of Britain. Keith Rudman hopes 'Living With a Killer' will raise money for the hospital which has treated him for years. He was born with the cystic fibrosis and his parents were told he wouldn t be expected to live past the age of 20. But after celebrating his 50th birthday Keith, from Todmorden, set about producing his biography with journalist Steve McHugh. The book details the routine he must undertake each day to survive and all proceeds will be donated to the Pearce Ward, a specialised cystic fibrosis unit at the University Hospital of South Manchester, where Keith and other patients across the region are treated. To get your own copy of 'Living With a Killer' you can contact Keith on Bowls historian, Hugh Hornby, has spent years tracing the history of the game of bowls and its central place in British culture - from Sir Francis Drake and Charles I to the pristine suburban clubs of 21st century Britain and the indoor greens of modern holiday camps. He explains how different codes of bowling have emerged since Elizabethan times in different parts of the country; for example crown green bowls in Lancashire and Yorkshire, with its undulating greens, professional competitions and gambling culture, and flat green or rink bowls in southern England and Scotland, with its measured formality and amateur ethos. There are some fantastic photographs contained in the 200 plus pages and Hugh intends to be at the Champion of Champions where his excellent book will be on sale. 5 P a g e

Over at Colwyn Bay RBL Yorkshire shared the opening cards but Callum Fennel s 21-8 victory for the visitors ensured they held a slender 3 chalk lead on Welsh soil. Ben Hewitt responded with his own 21-8 card which was to be the last Welsh success as Yorkshire came from Colwyn Bay 44 chalks in hand. Wales fared better in the remaining games at Newsome sharing the winning cards four each, but Yorkshire increased their margin of victory to 45. 11 COMPETITION NEWS Waterloo Week proved to be a huge success with almost non-stop bowling in Blackpool at The Waterloo, Marton Institute and Raikes Hotel. The main event, the Co-operative Funeralcare Waterloo Handicap, could not have gone better. Glorious sunshine throughout, one of the best crowds for finals day for some years together with some outstanding bowling was captured live on ITV4. Greg Smith added to his Spring Waterloo title of 2014 when he won a tremendous final with his county colleague, Ross Dunkley, Thanks must go to John Taylor of Cooperative Funeralcare for putting his faith in our great sport and their huge investment to bring bowls back to terrestrial television. ITV4 did an outstanding job led by presenter Rishi Persad and MC, Paul Booth. Early indications show that viewing figures Greg Smith far exceeded expectations. John Taylor (Co-operative funeralcare) - Mark Audin (Waterloo Bowls Manager) Thanks must also go to the Waterloo Committee of Mark Audin, Mel Evans MBE, Ricky Cochrane, Peter Jose and Tony Gatley, who himself has invested heavily in the Waterloo, along with Andy Cairns, David Corkill and Lynn Pritchatt Not content with the Waterloo title, the next day Greg Smith made the short journey up the road to the Raikes Hotel to beat Callum Wraight 21-7 in the final of the Talbot Trophy. At just 22 years of age, Smith became the first player since Jack Cox in 1925 to win both the Waterloo Handicap and Talbot Trophy in the same year. Other finals played during the week saw Alexis Lunn-Gadd win Katrina Earl (21-17) to the Ladies Talbot Trophy, Simon Coupe claim the Marton Institute Super 64 with a victory over Glynn Cookson, Linda Williams storming to a 21-9 success in the Cherish Protect Ladies Waterloo and TV commentator Andy Cairns and his partner Carron McGrath (pictured) enjoying the Blackpool sunshine as they defeated Amanda Ridley & Ben Phillips in the final of the Rehau Waterloo Mixed Pairs.
