2016 JUNIOR INDIVIDUAL MERIT Saturday 20 August Walsgrae BC For the second year running the winner of the BCGBA BRIGGS EQUIPMENT UK Junior Indiidual Merit has come from the county of the President. Andrew Armstrong (Wales) proed a worthy winner on a day with a mixture of sunshine and rain with some strong winds thrown in for good measure. Armstrong, wearing the number 32 shirt, came from 7-2 down to beat Will Mosley (Derbyshire) in his opening match but then faced a titanic battle with Danielle Eccles. He trailed the young lady from North Lancs & Fylde, 5-1, early doors but soon drew leel though neither player could gain an adantage. They were leel on six further occasions throughout this excellent game but Armstrong finished the stronger to run out to game from It was another slow start in round three (2-5) against Dan Bodley from Staffordshire but once again he could not shake off his opponent. From 14 across he finally found daylight and handed in a card to book his semi-final place against Stefan Kelly who had made the trip from the Isle of Man. Armstrong made sure it was he who was to make the good start and in no time he was11-2 up. Kelly couldn t get him off his faoured mark and although he fought hard he couldn t aoid a 21-9 defeat. Waiting for him in the final was Bailey Rice (Yorkshire) who had a more comfortable passage to the final. He went on a ten-break to go from 8-10 down to up in his opener against Curtis Metcalfe (Shropshire) before securing a win. He eentually managed to pull away from Matthew Worden (Cheshire) in round two from and onto a ictory then booked his place in the semi-finals with a success against Liam Mercer (Greater Manchester). Like Armstrong, Rice was in tremendous form at the penultimate stage as he left Merseyside s Ryan Walters on 6. As in most of his preious games, Armstrong had a slow start but soon managed to get on his faoured mark across the top edge of the green and build up a 13-5 adantage. Once Bailey got hold of the jack he went for a longer mark playing into a dip in the opposite corner of the green. He fought back to but was unable to maintain his momentum as Armstrong got back onto his mark and ran out to game. 2 P a g e

2016 ENDSLEIGH SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP YORKSHIRE won a tremendous battle with Shropshire to lift the 2016 ENDSLEIGH Senior County Championship Crosfield Cup after a narrow four chalk oerall ictory. There was little between the sides throughout this pulsating encounter though Yorkshire always held the adantage. Both home sides recorded three winning cards in the opening four blocks with Graeme Wilson s 21-8 card at Elland Cricket & Bowling Club ensuring the White Rose County had an oerall 13 chalk cushion. Yorkshire had increased their lead to 16 by the end of the middle four with two winners apiece at each enue but nobody would hae predicted eents at Shropshire s home enue, Greenfields BC. In an online poll, the Callum Wraight Stuart King came out as the game eeryone wanted to see but who would hae guessed the game s outcome. King was in tremendous form as he silenced the home crowd with an amazing 21-4 return to inspire his team to ictory. Howeer, the silence was short lied as the decibel leels grew louder with news coming through from Elland that Tom Roden, reinstated for the final, handed in a 21-3 card to bring the match back to life as the Salopians led by 9 with two games left on each green. Any hopes of repeating their 2009 success against Yorkshire were dashed when James Daison played a true captain s innings as he beat an out-of-sorts Derek Wright, 21-6 in the closing stages, a result that would proe ital as Yorkshire held on to record their first title since 2011 when they beat Shropshire. 4 P a g e

2016 DRAKES PRIDE JUNIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP YORKSHIRE made it a county double when their junior side matched that of their senior counterparts by winning the DRAKES PRIDE Junior County Championship. The preious week their seniors defeated Shropshire in the Endsleigh Senior County Championship by just four chalks oerall and it was looking like another close final was on the cards as after eight blocks completed there was nothing between them, and their opponents, Warwick & Worcester. The first game off the green came at Ward End Conseratie BC in Birmingham where Yorkshire captain, Fern Beaumont, led by example and handed in a 21-5 card. Warwick & Worcester responded in some style as first Louis Jones and then their away captain, Adam Walker, both came off the Broad Oak BC green in Huddersfield, 21-9 winners. The remaining games in the first four at both enues were close, and so was the oerall score as Warwick & Worcester held a three chalk adantage. Chloe Hirst (Yorkshire) got the middle four off to a fine start at Broad Oak with a 21-5 card but this was almost cancelled out at Ward End by Jack Whitehead who won Like the first four, the remaining games were once again close affairs with each side haing two winners apiece at each enue but they could not be separated as the scores were leel, 274 each, with both away sides winning by eight. But things changed dramatically in the back four as Yorkshire stamped their authority by claiming six of the final eight cards. Three winners apiece at each enue saw them safely home with Matthew Bell winning 21-7 in Birmingham while Ethan Wareing finished things nicely in Huddersfield with a 21-9 card as Yorkshire retained the Junior County Championship trophy they won last September by 37 chalks oerall. Yorkshire s tremendous record in the Junior County Championship, twele titles since the year 2000, will be tested in 2017 as it was announced that they will lose no fewer than ten players from this season s squad who will be oer age next year. They are in the fortunate position, and the eny of most counties, in appearing to hae an abundance of talent waiting in the wings ready to step up to the mark. Cheshire, Cumbria and Merseyside will be their opponents in next year s championship but don t be surprised if they are there or thereabouts again next September. 5 P a g e

BOWLSCOMPS ARTHUR LAND RANKING TABLE Gary Ellis is in touching distance of becoming the inaugural winner of the Arthur Land Ranking Table, sponsored by BOWLSCOMPS. He holds an 83 point lead oer second placed Greg Smith and although you get 25 points for a win it is unlikely that Ellis will not score some points in the remaining Flowfit Champion of Champion eents he is still in. Smith though may get the opportunity to deny Ellis points in the Co-op Funeralcare Waterloo Handicap if their paths meet in the last 32. At the time of going to press, there are still fie competitions remaining with points aailable and you can follow the progress of the Ranking Table ia the BCGBA website. 1 Gary Ellis Greater Manchester Greg Smith Warwick & Worcester 81 3 Graeme Wilson Yorkshire 77 3 Callum Wraight Shropshire 64 4 Simon Coupe North Lancs & Fylde 57 6 Ian Nicholson North Lancs & Fylde 54 7 Ashley Daykin Yorkshire 50 Scott Simpson Staffordshire 50 Kieren Smith Yorkshire Darren Plenderleith North Midlands P a g e

#DeelopmentMatters The inaugural Junior Super 6 Team Championships kicked off with six teams at the Mecca of Bowls, The Waterloo. The teams were split into two groups of three, with the winner of each group going through to the final to play for the trophy. Group A consisted of Greater Manchester, Lancashire and North Lancs & Fylde A while Group B featured Cumbria, Isle of Man and North Lancs & Fylde B. The format was simple, six players per team playing four singles game and a doubles match. One point was awarded for each singles win and two points for a win in the doubles. If two teams finished leel on points then the aggregate would come into play. In Group A, Greater Manchester opened up strongly by beating North Lancs & Fylde A 5-1 and putting them in a strong position for their next match against Lancashire. The opening game in Group B was a tight contest coming down to the crucial two points in the doubles. North Lancs & Fylde B took the two points in the doubles game to leel the scores with the Isle of Man, 3-3, and making the group wide open. The second round of matches in Group A saw Lancashire kill off Greater Manchester's hopes with a conincing 5-1 win oer the Mancunian team. Group B saw Cumbria open up with an impressie 4-2 win oer North Lancs & Fylde B, meaning the final game in that group decided the finalists. The final round of games in Group A saw Lancashire flex their muscles een more with a full house and a Super 6 points haul against North Lancs & Fylde A, 6-0, easily booking their place in the final. But the final game in Group B saw Cumbria needing three points against the Isle of Man to get to the final. With the singles game locked at two points each the final game on the green, the doubles, would decide who had the last final spot. Isle of Man closed the doubles game out and booking their team into the final against Lancashire. The first Super 6 Tournament final would be contested by the Isle of Man and Lancashire. Lancashire started out of the blocks well, securing the first three singles games, howeer the Isle of Man rallied and took the final singles game to make it 3-1. The Isle of Man continued their form by then snatching a big 21-8 win in the doubles making it 3-3, but unfortunately for Junior Super 6 Champions, Lancashire them Lancashire took the title by a better aggregate, 85-72, and becoming the first winners of the BCGBA Junior Super 6 Team Championships. The feedback has been excellent about the eent, with all the counties taking part liking the format that gae eeryone a competitie chance. The Isle of Man particularly loed the eent, as it s the first time they hae competed with their juniors in a County Team een. Thanks are recorded to the Waterloo for the use of their green and facilities and to Tom Dennison who ran the day and for all his hard work in making the eent a reality. Let s hope it can become a regular eent in the BCGBA calendar. Contact your local Deelopment Officer through your County Management Committee or me direct at Jodie.faulkner@googl .com 12 P a g e

WATERLOO WEEK The eagerly anticipated Waterloo Week is upon us with hundreds of bowlers packing their bags and booking into their hotels in Blackpool for a great week (and a bit) of bowls. This year, with the BCGBA and BCGLBA Champion of Champions returning to follow the main Waterloo Handicap, as in years gone by, many bowlers will be saying goodbye to their loed ones for a ten-day spell. The action begins on Friday 16 September when the annual Marton Institute Open gets underway at, strangely enough, Marton Institute. 64 bowlers, eight each night from Friday through to Monday, will be aiming for one of the eight places aailable on finals night on Tuesday 20th. Play in all sessions start at 6.30pm. The following day, the Ladies Talbot, sponsored by Pat & John Crowther, concludes also at Marton Institute. The last 32 ladies will not only play for this prestigious title but also for a place in the BCGLBA Champion of Champions a week later. Play gets underway at 10.30am. The main eent, the Co-op Funeralcare Waterloo Handicap, also gets underway on the Saturday morning as the last 64 start their road to finals day on Wednesday 21st. The 64 will be reduced to 32 by the end of Saturday night who will all return on Monday 19th for a place in the last 16 which will be teleised once again by ITV4. The winner of the Callum Wraight Greg Smith clash will play the winner of the Mark Martindale Gary Ellis match in the last game on the green on the Monday afternoon and is sure to attract a big crowd. Tuesday is a big day for all players as they hae to be at the top of their game to make finals day with the added pressure of the teleision cameras bringing the lie action to the nation. Then on Wednesday, the day eery bowler should aspire to be inoled in, the last eight will play to a winner once again lie on ITV4. Sandwiched in between is the Ladies Waterloo with new sponsors, Manning Global, which will play down to the final on Sunday 18th. As last year, the finalists will return on Wednesday 21st to play in front of the teleision cameras during the men s final day. Play on the Sunday commences at 10am. Prior to the Champion of Champions weekend, bowling continues on the Thursday and Friday. As is customary, the Men s Talbot takes its rightful place on Thursday 22nd with the last 32 playing to a winner at the Raikes Hotel with a 10am start. On the Friday, following the success of 2015, the Charlie Tattersall 31up returns to the Waterloo, again with 32 bowlers. Start time for this one is 9.30am. Once that is complete it is all back to Marton institute for the Marton Institute 1,000 Challenge. Four bowlers - Gary Ellis, Greg Smith, Graeme Wilson and Callum Wraight - will play 31up in a winner-takes-all competition with play commencing at 7pm. If you like your bowls Blackpool is the place to be and we hope eeryone will make an effort to support all the competition organisers who do so much for our great game.
