BRITISH CROWN GREEN BOWLING ASSOCIATION 2017 BCGBA FRED.OLSEN CRUISE LINES CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS The draw for the 2017 BCGBA Champion of Champions was streamed live over the internet from the Globegig studios in Blackpool and has given Gary Ellis, the defending champion and three-time winner (2004, 2011, 2016), an opening game against the Merseyside Merit champion, Phil Lee. This year the competition, which takes place on Saturday 23rd September at the famous Waterloo Hotel in Blackpool, has a new sponsor in Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines and our members are encouraged to take full advantage of their discount offer detailed in their advert on the next page. Four other former winners will join Ellis in the final major of the season. Callum Wraight (2015) faces the Cheshire Merit winner, Peter Illidge. Simon Coupe (2014) will play Kevan Shaw, winner of the Lancashire Merit while John Bailey (2007) and triple winner, Graeme Wilson (2003, 2008, 2009), must wait to see who their opponents will be as they will play the winners of the Brighouse Classic and Rastrick Classic respectively who along with the Midland Masters, Coop Funeralcare Waterloo Handicap and Talbot Trophy are yet to conclude their competitions. One of the most intriguing games will be the clash of the BCGBA Junior champion and BCGBA Veterans champion with 15-year-old, Lucas Hall, taking on the experienced, Gerald Merry. All results can be viewed via the BCGBA website and, once again, the competition will be streamed live across the internet (usually from 2pm onwards) by the team at Globegig. To view, click on the following link BOWLSCOMPS ARTHUR LAND RANKING TABLE The BOWLSCOMPS Arthur Land Ranking Table trophy will be presented at the Champion of Champions with the inaugural winner, Garry Ellis, once again leading the table. He currently holds a 15 point lead over second placed Callum Wraight with Graeme Wilson a further 16 points behind in third place. Of the remaining six competitions - Brighouse Classic, Rastrick Classic, Midland Masters, Co-op Funeralcare Waterloo Handicap, Talbot Trophy and BCGBA Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines Champion of Champions - Ellis has only qualified for the Rastrick Classic and BCGBA Champion of Champions finals. Wraight however is in the line-up of four finals, missing out on the Rastrick Classic and Midland Masters. Wilson, like Wraight is also in four finals, being ineligible to enter the Midland Masters and not qualifying for the Talbot Trophy. Hopefully, we will have a close finish to this year s Ranking Table but don t discount Greg Smith. He is currently in sixth place some 66 points off the pace. He is though still in everything apart from the Rastrick Classic and Champion of Champions (currently third reserve) so he could have a big say on who wins this year s trophy. 1 P a g e

2017 ENDSLEIGH SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP For the second successive season, the final of the ENDSLEIGH Senior County Championship went down to virtually the last bowl of a pulsating match. Twelve months ago, Yorkshire defeated Shropshire by four chalks but this year the outcome was even closer as North Midlands just got the better of Potteries & District by two chalks. Both home sides recorded ten winners but North Midlands victory at their Haunchwood BC green by 79 chalks proved crucial as Potteries & District fell two agonising chalks short in their home leg at Dilhorne Recreation & BC, winning by 77. North Midlands opened up a slender six-chalk advantage once the first four jacks at each venue had been completed with both home sides claiming a clean-sweep of victories. An opening 21-6 card by Mark Burdett followed by a 21-9 card by the North Midlands home captain, Jamie Dunn, was the main difference between the two sides. The single figure wins continued at Haunchwood as North Midlands stretched their lead to 21 with four games to be played at each venue. Ben Percival handed in the best card of the day in a 21-5 victory and he was supported by the BCGBA Senior Merit champion, Darren Plenderleith, who won Adam Jackson got Potteries & District s first win with a victory while Paul Ward was North Midlands only middle four winner at Dilhorne thanks to his triumph. The last four games were again mirrored at each venue with the home sides having three winners apiece. Joe Williamson came away from Haunchwood with best card of the match for his Potteries & District side, winning 21-17, while Stuart Perry played a true captain s role for North Midlands as he won on away soil. A late 21-5 card from Anthony Lloyd at Dilhorne proved too little, too late as his Potteries side fell two chalks from an overall victory. All scores can be viewed via the Competitions page on the BCGBA website and clicking on the Senior County link. 4 P a g e

2017 DRAKES PRIDE JUNIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Yorkshire have retained the DRAKES PRIDE Junior County Championship. Arch rivals, Warwick & Worcester, who suffered a 37- chalk defeat to the White Rose county in last year s final, pushed them all the way this year with just 7-chalks between the sides when all the cards were added up. There was little between the two sides after the opening exchanges with Warwick & Worcester in the ascendancy by 11 after the first four jacks. It seemed that 11 was a popular figure in Warwick & Worcester as all four games in their home leg at Ye Olde Knowle BC ended Yorkshire s Lewis Cooper denying the Midlander s a clean sweep of victories. Over at Golcar Liberal Club, Liam Lowry s card prevented Yorkshire from claiming all four winning cards. By the end of the middle four jacks Yorkshire had turned their deficit into a 14-chalk advantage thanks to four winning cards in their home leg with James Hick handing in a fine 21-6 card. Not to be outdone, Cameron Cutler cancelled out Hick s card with his own 21-6 victory in Warwick & Worcester s home leg but with the winning jacks shared, his side were left with an uphill battle on their hands as the final reached its closing stages. Louis Jones brought Warwick & Worcester right back into the game with a tremendous 21-9 victory on opposition turf and this was soon followed by Jack Newsome who gave his home supporters a huge lift with his 21-7 success, giving the Midlander s a 12-chalk cushion. But Yorkshire responded strongly, dropping just three chalks in the last six games, to see them over the line with seven chalks to spare and a third consecutive title. 6 P a g e

BRITISH CROWN GREEN LADIES BOWLING ASSOCIATION 2017 BCGLBA COUNTRY GARDEN ROSES CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS Sunday 24th September - Waterloo Hotel, Blackpool - 10am The British Crown Green Ladies have made the draw for their 2017 Champion of Champions, sponsored by Country Garden Roses, which, as always, takes place on the day after the men s competition. Like the men, there are still a few competitions yet to be completed with the Jack Taylor singles at Norden, Waterloo and Talbot to declare their winner. At the time of going to press, there are just two former winners in the 32-strong line-up. Four-time champion (2005, 2007, 2015, 2016), Nicola Boulton, is going for a hattrick of titles but first must overcome the challenge of Carol Matthews, who qualified by winning the Staffordshire Merit. Three-time champion (1990, 1991, 2002), Karen Galvin, by strange coincidence, takes on the South Staffordshire Merit winner, Vikki Wilson, in her first round game. If both former winners win their opening games then they will meet in the next round. The finals will be streamed live across the internet (usually from 2pm onwards) by the team at Globegig. To view, click on the following link (Fleetwood Festival, New Longton Ladies Open) Louise Ollerton v Tracey Moseley (Burton & District Merit) (Cheshire Merit) Kathryn Gee v Fern Beaumont (BCGLBA Junior Merit) (Greater Manchester Merit) Janet Walker v Lynsey Gorman (Merseyside Merit) (Yorkshire Merit) Alicia Beaumont v Debbie Watters (North Lancs & Fylde Merit) (Isle of Man June Festival) Karen Galvin v Vikki Wilson (South Staffordshire Merit) (Staffordshire Merit) Carol Matthews v Nicola Boulton (Mid Cheshire Merit) (Ossett Flying Horse 2016) Sarah Clarke v Bernie Toon (Blackpool Spring Festival) (20th September) Waterloo v Alyson Evans (North Warwickshire Merit) (Isle of Man Merit) Shelley Kennish v Lisa Kerford (Lancashire Merit) (Welsh Merit) Gay Cooper v Amanda Hare (North Shropshire Merit) (Isle of Man September Festival) Angela Gaut v Jack Taylor Singles - Norden (16th September) (Shropshire Merit) Jane Archer v Janet Taylor (Blackpool Illuminations Classic 2016) (North Derbyshire Merit) Kellie Hill v Maggie Barnes (North Midlands Merit, Dunlop Open) (Dudley & District Merit) Jo Webster v Talbot (16th September) (West Heaton Ladies Open) Melanie Saville-Fearn v Suzi Ladbrooke (Cynthia Tonge Memorial) (Warwick & Worcester Merit) Emily Kernick v Kerry Brown (South Yorkshire Merit, BCGLBA Merit) LADIES COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL North Midlands ladies will be hoping to emulate the achievement of their male counterparts when they take on Yorkshire in the final of the British Crown Green Ladies County Championship. This year s final is being played on the two-greens at Bridgewater BC, in Whitchurch (SY13 1RE) on Sunday 17th September (2pm). The teams have been declared and can be viewed via the Competitions page on the BCGBA website and by clicking on the Senior County link. 7 P a g e

FERN IS JUNIOR CHAMPION FERN BEAUMONT followed in the footsteps of her county colleague, Eleanor Broadley, by winning the 2017 BCG Ladies Junior Merit to ensure the trophy remained in the bulging Yorkshire trophy cabinet. Twenty young ladies descended on Heswall RBL in Merseyside where they were divided into four groups of five, playing each other on a roundrobin basis. With two points awarded for a win, the four group winners qualified for the semi-finals with unbeaten records. Fern was relieved to come through Group One following a narrow victory in her final game against South Yorkshire s Ellen Key to finish with maximum points. Greater Manchester s Laura Vincent eased through Group Two, while Groups Three and Four were won by Yorkshire. Leah Keyworth, like Fern, won her final Group Three game while Sophie Brown s final game in Group Four saw her defeat Susie Lawson (Shropshire),15-11, to deny her a semi-final place. In the semi-finals, Sophie was a resounding 15-8 winner against Laura but Fern was pushed all the way as she secured a narrow victory against Leah. And it was the same scenario in the final as Fern recorded her third consecutive success which gave her the 2017 title. Fern now takes her place in the BCG Ladies Champion of Champions at Blackpool where she will play the Cheshire Merit winner, Kathryn Gee. MEL EVANS MBE CENTENARY MIXED PAIRS The 2017 BCGBA season draws to a close on Saturday 30th September when the Mel Evans MBE Centenary Mixed Pairs takes place at the Waterloo Hotel, Blackpool. Thirty-two pairs will compete for the final title of the season and play gets underway at 9.30am. The draw will be published on the BCGBA website and our other media outlets as soon as it has been made. And it will, again, be live on your TV screens on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th of September on ITV4 from 10am, writes Janice Gower. The World-Famous Crown Green event is well known for the noise and banter and sheer skill involved and is THE one they all want to win. The draw took place for the final 64 live across the internet and brought up some very interesting draws. Sue Stanton represented the Co-op Funeralcare at the draw, We are proud to be involved with the event at the Waterloo, we have involvement with many Grass roots bowling events, including disabled and of course Indoor Bowls at International level. This is our third year as Sponsors at the Waterloo and we are really looking forward to some good bowling, said Stanton. One of the favourites for the title is Preston s Simon Coupe, who is one of only a few to have won the title three times and also managed the impressive feat of winning the event in back to back years. But in his way is last year s Quarter Finalist and local hero James Grimston. An eye-catching game all round. Who will make it through? Another favourite to pick up the title, Graeme GI Wilson has got a very tough last 64 contest. He faces Lee Heaton who also impressed at last year s finals last 16. All the games are tough when you get to this stage, said Wilson, It s just great to be involved and the support of the Co-op is fantastic for the game, he added. Last year Champion Tim Houghton didn t make it through the qualifying rounds this year but the 2015 Champion Alvechurch s Greg Smith did. Smith faces Mark Hughes from Leeds and will hope to have a good run again this year to make it to the TV final stages. But also into the mix is The Beast himself Wayne Ditchfield, Crowd entertainer and quarter finalist last year Callum Wraight, Semifinalist in 2016, the impressive, Glynn Cookson from Winsford and also former Jack & Jean Isherwood title holder Mike Leach will all be battling to take this year s title.
