2 LINE DANCING AND ITS TERMINOLOGY/LANGUAGE The purpose of this session is to introduce our guests to line dance terminology. We will review some of the basic line dance terminology/steps to prepare you for the many line dance workshops that we offer here at the Vegas Jam! You will often find, in line dancing (soul/urban and country western), that we do the same or similar steps but to different names. The purpose of Bridging the Gap is to bring the two languages, universal dance terminology and soul/urban dance terminology, together. Also, keep in mind that not all instructors teach the same. Some teach by numbers, some teach by pointing, some develop a song (a way of singing the steps so you know what is coming up next), some teach by direction, and some use or develop their own terminology, technique and methods. In this session, we hope to bring all of this together with the intent that you will be able to attend any workshop and/or class and understand what an instructor is talking about in their instructional format All rights reserved by Aline Goodman 2
3 LINE DANCING Below you will find charts with the universal dance terminology and the soul/urban terminology side-by-side. Our attempt is to take the most commonly used dance steps to highlight in this session. We have also listed examples of dances that include these steps. We could not and did not include every dance step out there but, what we did do was look at a good number of dances currently being danced in the line dance world, and concentrated on those dances steps. These terms have been taken from various research sources on the internet. This document should be used for informational purposes only to help assist you and further your love for the art of line dancing! Remember, you are here to have fun, so don t forget to smile and ask questions. Happy Line Dancing! All rights reserved by Aline Goodman 3
4 Cha Cha Step: Three steps, either left, right, left or right left right, done in two beats of music, used with a cha cha rhythm. Also, see Triple Step. Second step is always a step together with he first step. The third step is in the opposite direction of the first two. It is used to quickly change direction. A back coaster steps back first. Ex: 1-Step back on Left and step right back next to left; 2 Step forward on left. A forward coaster step is forward first: 1-step forward on left and step right forward next to left; 2-Step back on left Coaster Step: In soul line dancing, we sometimes call this a Jazzy Lady Walk It Up, which refers to a dance called JAZZY LADY. 9 Kick Ball Change. is a dance move that consists of a kick followed by the ball change. Normally it uses a split-beat count: 1&2 or 1a2 and has a syncopated feeling, i.e., the accent of the motion is on "two". The move consists of three distinct actions and can be started with any foot. 1: A kick or flick with the left foot. After the kick the foot naturally swings back and slightly push off the floor by the ball of the left boot behind or by the right foot (partial weight transfer) and 2: Step with the right foot. Kick Ball Change. Kick Step Out (either with the left or right foot) Loose Booty It s Easy Tho Don t Play That Song Monterey Turn. This is a 4 count move. It is usually done starting on the right by touching the right foot to the right side and then bringing in the right foot as you make either a ¼ or ½ turn to the right, pivoting on the ball of the left foot and then placing the left foot next to the right. It can be also done on the left Monterey Turn. Turn it Metamorphosis (You Big Dummy) Terminal Reaction All rights reserved by Aline Goodman 9
