Proposed Officers and Board Members Patricia St. Peter President Pat is completing her first term as president of U.S. Figure Skating. She previously served on the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors as the Midwestern Vice President ( ) and as the Administrative/Legal Group Coordinator ( ). She has also served as the chair of the Compensation Committee ( ), chair of the Ethics Committee ( ), and has been a member of the following other committees: Competitions, International, International Judges and Officials, Membership, Memorial Fund Operating, Selections, Strategic Planning, and Referee and Accountants Training and Education Subcommittee. Pat served on the ISU Disciplinary Commission ( ) and as a U.S. team leader for Grand Prix events. She is also a national singles/pairs judge and national referee. Locally, Pat served as the president of the Twin City Figure Skating Association ( ) and was a member of the executive committees for the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the 2000 World Synchronized Skating Championships, and the 1998 World Figure Skating Championships. Pat is an attorney with a national litigation and appellate practice specializing in complex business disputes. She also serves as her law firm s diversity coordinator and, for five years, she was the managing partner of the firm s headquarter office. She resides in Minneapolis, Minn., with her husband Tom and her daughter Claire. It is a great honor and privilege to have been selected by the Nominating Committee to serve a second term as president of U.S. Figure Skating. My goals during the coming year will be to work with many others in U.S. Figure Skating to: ensure that U.S. Figure Skating remains in stable financial condition; increase U.S. Figure Skating s revenue; diversify U.S. Figure Skating s revenue sources; continue fundraising efforts to fund existing and new programs; manage expenses to ensure the quality of existing programs; explore new marketing opportunities for our athletes, our programs and our sport; prepare for and represent the United States at the ISU Congress in June; work to ensure that the 2011 film project is a success; work with other volunteers in leadership positions and headquarters staff on continuing to improve communication networks throughout U.S. Figure Skating; and continue to develop future leadership. I am confident that we can achieve these goals by working together in a positive, collaborative and collegial manner. To have continued success in the many years to come, there must be a team effort by all! Kathy Slack Midwestern and First Vice President Kathy has been involved in skating since the age of 9 and competed nationally in pairs while in her teens. I have been an active member of the Troy Skating Club for more than 45 years, serving on its board and as an officer. My U.S. Figures Skating involvement has included serving on the Judges, Competitions, Singles and Pairs committees as well as chair of the Judges Education and Training Subcommittee (JETS), chair of the Judges Committee, Membership Development Group Coordinator and board member at large. Kathy has had the pleasure of serving the association as a team leader for the past 16 years. She retired two years ago after 30 years in the wallpapering business and is married with two children and four grandsons. I am extremely honored to be asked to continue to serve as Midwestern Vice President. Keeping the lines of communication open with Midwest clubs and their members will be a priority. In these difficult financial times, the board will have to be looking at membership retention and sponsorship opportunities. I look forward to working with the Board of Directors to make a positive contribution to the betterment of the association and do the very best for all our athletes. Jessica Gaynor Pacific Coast and Second Vice President Jessica has been involved in skating since the age of six, when her first pair of skates was laced at the tank rink of Ice Follies stilt artists Phyllis and Harris Legg in San Francisco. Competing in the early 1960 s on the Pacific Coast, Jessica participated in singles, pairs and ice dancing for the Skating Club of San Francisco, her current home club. She met her husband Jeffrey in high school and together they have enjoyed practicing psychology and medicine respectively and raising a skating family. Their two daughters, Whitney and Darby, skated competitively at the national level. Jessica has been a U.S. Figure Skating official for more than 30 years, chairing, judging and refereeing nonqualifying, regional, sectional and national competitions. She has served her club in various capacities, including president for three consecutive years. She has been a member of several U.S. Figure Skating committees and has chaired the Sanctions and Eligibility, Strategic Planning and Nominating committees. She has served on the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors for the past two years, first as the Technical Group coordinator and then as the - 1 -
Proposed Officers and Board Members Pacific Coast and first vice president. She has learned an immeasurable amount serving the sport and the organization and is very honored to be nominated for a second term as vice president. I want to continue to be part of the U.S. Figure Skating leadership that helps work with our athletes, clubs and membership to promote the growth of our sport, our Pacific Coast section and our national governing body. The primary focus of my first term as Pacific Coast vice president has been to put into place tools designed to improve the communication network for our clubs. Monthly conference calls, a Regional Advisory Board, a survey of clubs, and a Facebook page devoted to the Pacific Coast section have improved the relationships between clubs. Going forward, the Pacific Coast has identified three high priority areas: 1. Recruit and train local officials 2. Create a bridge between Basic Skills, ISI, and group lessons to U.S. Figure Skating clubs 3. Develop a forum for exchanging ideas regarding fundraising activities, volunteerism, social and recreational events and media resources to help clubs grow. In addition, the next year I will continue to work at the U.S. Figure Skating board level on projects such as marketing and communications, athlete emergency funding, strategic planning, and revenue diversification and enhancement. The overriding goal of my work in these areas is to promote the visibility, access, and benefits of our sport from the grassroots level to Olympic excellence while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Ann O Keefe Eastern and Third Vice President Ann resides in Haverford, Pa., and is a member of the Philadelphia Skating Club & Humane Society (PSC&HS) where she serves on the Board of Governors and as immediate past president. Ann is chairperson of the PSC&HS Challenge Cup and recently chaired the 2009 U.S. Collegiate Figure Skating Championships at PSC&HS. Ann also serves as an elected member of the Haverford Township s ice rink advisory board. She is currently completing her first year as Eastern Vice President. In addition to fulfilling her board duties, Ann serves as U.S. Figure Skating s board representative for Serving the American Rinks (STAR), for which she was elected to the Executive Committee. Ann also served as the U.S. Figure Skating representative trustee with the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame and as a selector for the U.S. Hall of Fame and the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Ann also served as the U.S. Figure Skating board liaison with the 2007 Skate America local organizing committee (LOC) board in Reading, Pa. Prior to this board service, Ann was the U.S. Figure Skating Administrative/Legal Group coordinator for three years and Grievance Committee chair for four years. Ann also serves as a national music coordinator and national announcer. She has participated as chief and assistant coordinator at numerous international, national, sectional, regional and nonqualifying events. Ann s involvement with figure skating began at a very early age in Troy, N.Y. She took a skating hiatus in order to pursue college (U.S. Air Force Academy and Skidmore College) and law school studies (Villanova University School of Law). She is a former competitor, test skater and college hockey player. Ann is an attorney and maintains a private practice in the Philadelphia area focusing on business and estate law. She serves as a court appointed arbitrator for the Delaware County (Pa.) Bar Association and was appointed to serve as one of three Delaware County voter registration commissioners. She has previously served as a child advocate in the Philadelphia court system. She has also served as a trustee and board member on various non-profit organizations in the Philadelphia area including Plan of PA, specializing in the care of mentally handicapped individuals, and Mid- County Senior Services, specializing in the care of older adults and providing programs and services to promote positive aging. I would be honored to continue to serve our membership as Eastern vice president. I will continue to interact with all by personal contact and planned monthly Eastern Section conference calls open to all interested U.S. Figure Skating members. It is critical to work directly with East Coast clubs and interclub associations to ensure that their issues and concerns are heard and that information from the Board of Directors is conveyed back to the members. Our member clubs are facing membership and retention issues, facility concerns and financial challenges. We must - 2 -
Proposed Officers and Board Members work together to find innovative solutions that address the varying needs across our organization in order to meet the demands of today and to plan for the future. As a STAR board member, I am also acutely aware of the issues which rink managers and U.S. Figure Skating clubs are facing in order to survive. I promised you last year that I would listen, be approachable and be responsive to your needs. I make the same promise and ask for your guidance so I can do an even better job serving you in this capacity. Samuel Auxier Secretary Sam has been involved with figure skating since he was 7 years old, which was a long time ago. He has competed in singles and passed the gold figure and free skate tests. Sam has been a judge for more than 25 years and is an ISU singles and pairs judge as well as a national judge and referee and a sectional technical controller. He has also served as a team leader. For the past three years, Sam has served as the chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, leading the update of the strategic plan and the action plan, and the development of job descriptions for all board and permanent committee chair positions. He has also served as a regional vice chair for both the Judges and Competitions committees and has been an active member of several other committees. Sam lives in Glen Ellyn, IL with his wife Lynn and has four adult children. He is a director with Deloitte & Touche LLP and manages the Capital Markets technology services practice. I will leverage my skating and business experience to serve as an active board member and effective secretary as defined by the job description. I will also use my experience as a judge, referee and former chair of the Strategic Planning Committee to help operationalize the action plans that the board adopts and wishes to implement. Warren Naphtal Treasurer Warren has been involved in figure skating as a volunteer and parent of two skaters for almost 20 years. Within the organization, Warren has served on the U.S. Figure Skating Finance Committee for the last six years. He has also served as a trustee of the U.S. Figure Skating Foundation for the last four years, including serving as secretary for the last three years. On the local level, Warren has served as the treasurer of The Skating Club of Boston for the last nine years and has been co-chair of Ice Chips for the last 12 years. Professionally, Warren has 25 years of experience in the finance area. Currently, Warren is the president of P/E Investments, an investment management firm he co-founded 15 years ago. My purpose is to support U.S. Figure Skating in meeting its strategic and tactical objectives while maintaining the ongoing financial operations. Specifically, I will provide financial expertise to the U.S. Figure Skating board on policy initiatives, interface and work with the U.S. Figure Skating financial staff and provide business expertise in negotiating contracts, structuring partnerships, reviewing vendor relationships, prioritizing investments and defining the role of the foundation. As a team player, I will work on whatever is required to be done including developing sponsorships, providing contacts, presenting the organization s vision to potential partners/sponsors. Finally, I will help generate ideas for how we grow the sport, how we make the sport more accessible financially, how we support member clubs that are struggling and how we support our athletes in the most effective way possible. Brittney Bottoms Athlete Services Group Coordinator Brittney s experience with figure skating has spanned more than 20 years. She has been and continues to be involved in the sport from the grassroots to elite level. She is the current Athlete Services Group coordinator, past chair of the U.S. Figure Skating Athlete Development Committee, former athlete member of the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors and a member of numerous other U.S. Figure Skating committees. Brittney has also served as a team leader to elite international events for the U.S. Team; she is also a certified free skating and moves in the field instructor through the Professional Skaters Association (PSA) and has coached on the grassroots and developmental level for nine years. He also served on the adhoc committee for implementation of the international judging system (IJS). Mike is currently chair of Special Projects and a member of the Special Olympics Committee and Member Recognition Subcommittee. He is also a national accountant and system specialist, and has officiated at all levels of U.S. Figure Skating competitions in these capacities. As the Membership Development Group coordinator, I hope to provide an open communication link between the Board of Directors, headquarters personnel and the various committees under my responsibility. I hope to be an active member of the board while respecting others ideas, listening with an open mind, making informed decisions, and providing feedback when appropriate. I want to improve club cohesiveness by establishing contacts/mediators for clubs to utilize in solving intra-club issues and providing alternatives to club fragmentation. And I plan to visit/meet with local club officers when officiating at their local club competitions/functions and apply this policy to all committee personnel having an opportunity to participate in functions sponsored by member clubs
Proposed Officers and Board Members Hal Marron Technical Group Coordinator Hal has been involved with U.S. Figure Skating for more than 40 years and is currently serving as the Technical Group coordinator. He has completed his gold medal tests in figures, free skate, pairs and ice dancing. He competed at the national level in men s singles and ice dancing, and at the international level in pairs skating. Hal served as a board member of the Coyotes Skating Club of Arizona for 20 years, including two terms as president. His past service to U.S. Figure Skating has included: first chairman of the Athletes Advisory Committee; vice chairman of the International Committee; athlete member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, atlarge member of the Board of Directors, chair of the Singles Committee and member of numerous committees. Hal has also served as the chairman or a director on many local organizing committees (LOCs) including U.S. Championships, U.S. Junior Championships, sectional, regional, North American Challenge Skate, ISU Junior Grand Prix, Future Champions Series and local nonqualifying events. He currently holds national appointments as a judge, referee, technical controller and technical specialist in singles, pairs and ice dancing. Hal also holds appointments with the ISU as an international judge in singles and pairs, and an ISU judge, international referee and ISU technical controller in ice dancing. Hal and his wife Molly (a national dance judge) have three children, two of whom are active competitors in the sport. When not involved in skating, Hal serves as a partner in a civil engineering firm with a specialty in water resources. It is an honor to be nominated as the Technical Group coordinator. The work of the committees within the Technical Group affects the majority of our members on a day-to-day basis. It is these committees that decide the rules and guidelines that must be met and adhered to within each test or competition. The decisions of these committees affect our youngest skater taking their first U.S. Figure Skating test and the oldest adult athlete enjoying their life-long passion. It will be my purpose as the Technical Group coordinator to ensure that the actions of these committees reflect the needs of our skaters and that any resulting adjustments to rules or guidelines are easily interpreted by the individuals they affect. Winston Burbank Administrative/Legal Group Coordinator Winston resides in Fairbanks, Ala. He has been a member of the Fairbanks Figure Skating Club for approximately 10 years. He has two children who are actively involved in figure skating. His son, Baxter, is a senior level ice dancer who is training in Philadelphia and going to college. His daughter, Bianca, is a freshman at Miami University, Ohio and continues to skate and compete there. He is an attorney and was a named partner and managing partner for his firm for a period of 23 years. Thereafter he became a District Court Judge for the State of Alaska for a period of six years. He is now fully retired except for doing private mediations. He has also been a State Commissioner for the Alaska Public Office Commission, which is responsible for political election ethics. I am honored to have served you this past year as the Administrative/Legal Group coordinator. My principal role is to provide oversight and guidance to the various committees assigned to this group. During this past year I have learned a great deal, and have had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know many people who are part of this great organization. I have found that there must be open communication among the various committees to achieve overall effectiveness. Furthermore, the coordinator has a fiduciary responsibility to render accurate reports to the Board of Directors, and to accurately communicate the board s directives to the various committees. It has been, and remains my goal to be a team player and to promote that atmosphere among the committees. Generally speaking, it is very important that all the committees work in harmony with each other and with the board in order to have a consistent and effective organization. If elected to another term, I will continue to work closely with the Grievance Committee to resolve grievances in a timely and fair manner. I believe that my past experiences as the managing partner of my law firm, as well as my judicial responsibilities, (which have also included being a settlement judge for civil cases), have been good training for me such that I might reasonably expect to accomplish these goals. I am also planning to work closely with the Strategic Planning Committee in developing an effective and realistic plan for the next quadrennial. In conclusion, I want to publicly thank my committee chairpersons for doing a great job, for their patience with me, and for their support. I am truly looking forward to working with all of the committee chairpersons and committee members so that we will have a successful term
Proposed Officers and Board Members Alex Chang Coaching Member As a former national and international competitor, Alex understands the dedication, integrity and collaboration required of competitive figure skating and is delighted to carry on a tradition of skating excellence to national, international and world-level competitors. His enthusiasm for teaching is complimented by his service as a technical specialist and data operator. Prior to coaching, Alex received his bachelor of arts from Harvard University and served as marketing manager for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Disney Consumer Products. He currently sits on two committees within U.S. Figure Skating and is honored to serve as a coaching member of the Board of Directors. I am delighted to serve as a coaching member of the Board of Directors. It is my firm belief that coaches have a profound impact on shaping the views, opinions and identities of young athletes, one skater at a time. I plan to provide improved communication as well as renewed direction and vision to our community of coaches across the nation. While there is always a need to disseminate and manage the steady flow of ISU and international judging system (IJS) rule changes, continuing education requirement (CER) deadlines, and advances in sports medicine, skating equipment and new technologies, ultimately we can be much more than this. Coaches are mentors, teachers, and sources of leadership for developing minds and bodies. Regardless of skill set or talent, we make a difference. We create a foundation where there wasn t one, teach life lessons when difficult choices need to be made, and simply offer support when nothing else is required. I love my job, and hope that I can help other coaches redefine and enhance who they are going to be for these young athletes. Mark Mitchell Coaching Member Mark is happy to be returning to the Board of Directors as a coaching member. He spent many years on the board and Executive Committee as an athlete member and was also chairman of the Athletes Advisory Committee. He has also served on numerous U.S. Figure Skating committees including International, Competitions, Singles and Pairs, and Coaches. As a skater, Mark was a U.S. junior champion and twice a member of the U.S. World Team. He skated professionally from before beginning his coaching career. He is a PSA master rated free skating coach and feels fortunate to have coached skaters at the national, international, world junior and world levels. My goal for the Board of Directors is to continue to make skating better for each generation of skaters. I have served on many U.S. Figure Skating committees and feel I have a good understanding of the broad spectrum of athletes and coaches who are involved with the association. I look forward to representing our coaches in a fair and impartial manner
Alexis Rohner Adult Skating Committee Chair Lexi has served as chair of the Adult Skating Committee for the past two years, and as Pacific Coast Section vice chair for the six years prior. She has coached skating for 12 years. Her competitive history includes 13 years in figure skating (seven in adult skating) and three years in competitive inline and speedskating. Lexi is a sectional announcer and has been announcing for 11 years. She has also written for SKATING magazine for several years. Her business background encompasses 13 years of corporate property, hospitality and recreation management. She is taking a break from coaching to raise her 2-year-old triplets. Adult skating has grown from an unstructured program to a strong, viable support and athletic network, both for its participants and U.S. Figure Skating. I am proud to say that in my involvement of almost two decades, I have been able to witness this growth firsthand. My job is to assist and guide the adult skating community in developing and realizing its full growth potential in conjunction with U.S. Figure Skating and the ISU. I aim to do this both in rule refinement and by bringing adult skating into the mainstream media in some manner. Adult skating is a lifelong opportunity for fitness and socializing for skaters who became adults and adults who become skaters. Benjamin Miller Athlete Development Committee Chair Ben is a former national, international and World Junior competitor as a singles skater. After finishing his singles career, he went on to train in ice dancing and passed his gold dances, making him a four-time U.S. Figure Skating gold medalist. Ben is serving U.S. Figure Skating as the chair of the Athlete Development Committee, an athlete representative on the International Committee Management Subcommittee and a member of the Athletes Advisory Committee. Ben served as the team leader for the 2009 Junior Grand Prix Series event in Lake Placid, N.Y. He coaches at the Saint. Paul Figure Skating Club in Saint Paul, Minn., and is also a student at the University of St. Thomas, where he is pursuing a bachelor s degree in business. Having served as the chair of the Athlete Development Committee for the past two years, I look forward to serving my third term. Over the past two years I, along with U.S. Figure Skating, have been able to evaluate which developmental programs are accomplishing their intended purpose. We have also looked at which programs could be more effective and better target their intended audience. This year the Athlete Development Committee hopes to complete its proposed restructuring, which will allow for the development of new programs and ideas as well as a reexamination of what is in place. The Athlete Development Committee hopes in the upcoming year to create and update programs aimed at better educating the developing skaters in this country, share pertinent information with the skaters in need and be able to prepare as many athletes as possible to be successful members of Team USA later in their skating careers. 8 To continue to represent the coaches of U.S. Figure Skating To uphold the fine reputation of our coaches nationwide To expand the development of Coaching Education Requirements (CER) To praise the excellence of our coaches and their athletes' achievements through coaching recognition To host conference calls to disseminate pertinent information and clarifications to Team USA coaches To represent U.S. Figure Skating by serving on the PSA Board of Governors To work diligently with PSA to launch e-learning platform courses available 24/7, coast to coast To continue to communicate with headquarters regarding all issues and needs Michelle Zeles-Hahn Collegiate Programs Committee Chair Michelle began skating at the age of 4 and has never stopped. She has a passion and a dedication to this special sport that is evidenced by her competitive career (double gold medalist, two-time sectional singles competitor and national competitor in precision and synchronized skating) and her work as an official (sectional judge, regional referee and nonqualifying technical controller). Michelle has actively volunteered and been an officer in the many clubs of which she has been a part and helped to run numerous competitions. She is honored to be nominated for the position of chair of the Collegiate Committee. Spending 11 years in college to obtain three degrees (most recently a PhD in bioengineering), she has been a collegiate skater for quite some time and understands the challenges and opportunities it presents. She has been a member of the Collegiate Committee for the past five years and national vice chair of intercollegiate skating for the past two years. The position, as I see it, should be one of an open dialogue between all the collegiate chairs/vice chairs and the collegiate skaters. These skaters are at the point where they can give tremendous feedback and come up with great ideas. Running the U.S. Collegiate Championships is not financially viable. I believe the Collegiate Committee should work in finding new ideas to help strengthen this competition, whether that be adding additional levels, using only local judges, running it in tandem with a nonqualifying competition or some other idea. Collegiate synchronized skating has come a long way the skating is incredible and brings such school spirit. The intercollegiate program has been fantastic for all collegiate skaters, not just those at the junior and senior levels. It brings together skaters of all levels and backgrounds, and makes skating a team sport. The program is self sufficient and student run, with more schools creating teams all the time. In addition, there was a private donor who gave generously to the collegiate program. That money has been used over the past three years for the hosting LOC to run the U.S. Collegiate Championships. The donor also created a matching funds account, and I encourage those with a passion for collegiate skating to donate to the fund by going to the U.S. Figure Skating web site, clicking on the Donate button and selecting "Collegiate Programs." I believe the collegiate programs are vital to our sport. U.S. Figure Skating loses at lot of members once they reach college. These skaters are an important source of our future coaches, volunteers and officials. It is important that we find ways to keep them interested and active in our sport. Lynn Goldman Competitions Committee Chair I am very excited to serve U.S. Figure Skating as chair of the Competitions Committee. I am a national judge in singles and pairs and a national technical controller for singles. I am on the Competitions Committee as the Midwestern Section vice chair. I was previously an RVC for the Judges Committee as well as chair of the Nominating Committee, and have served on other committees. As chair, I would like to keep the sport moving forward and reacting to items needed to keep our competition structure a well-oiled machine, including nonqualifying competitions. I would work with headquarters and other committees to make sure decisions are made with the skater s best interest in mind. It is very important to make sure things are fair to all. We are in the midst of a crisis, one that involves a lack of clubs willing to bid for regional and sectional championships. I would work to help bridge communication between the LOC and headquarters and help find ways to make these events profitable for all
I will also work to keep our referees, accountants and others involved with the Competitions Committee and hope to offer schools around the country to add to the pool of our volunteers. John Millier Dance Committee Chair Competition Pairs Intermediate through junior, (novice sectional competitor) Dance New England champion at the intermediate, novice and junior levels Sectional dance champions at novice and junior levels, U.S. junior dance bronze medalist, 1987 Senior dance competitor at sectionals and U.S. Championships, Participant at U.S. Sports Festival, 1990 Coaching I took part in the collegiate program, in which you judged and coached at the same time, for while in school and for five years afterward. I coached low-level figures, free skating and pairs. I coached all levels of ice dancing, including national competitors. I was the skating director for the summer programs in Maine, with close to 100 skaters involved, and was the director for the dance programs in several clubs throughout Massachusetts. Judging I began judging while still an active competitor, earning my low-test appointment in the late 1980s. I judge all disciplines; however, I focused on ice dancing from the start. I earned my international appointment in 2001 and my ISU appointment in Team Leading I was the youngest team leader to be chosen in the late 1990s, when they ran a school for perspectives at one of the Champs Camps (although they were not called that then). I was given my first assignment in 1997 at Skate America and have since served as team leader at the Goodwill Games, Grand Prix and Junior Grand Prix events, Junior Grand Prix Final, Junior Grand Prix and Grand Prix finals combined, World Junior Championships and World Championships (twice). Most recently, I was chosen as the alternate team leader for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. U.S. Figure Skating Involvement I have served on the Dance Committee for about 20 years, most recently holding the position of Eastern Section vice chair. I have also served on the Athletes Advisory Committee and was chosen to represent it in the Athlete Development Subcommittee at its inception. I was the first to suggest a camp for novice skaters at the U.S. Championships and chaired the event for the first two years. This camp has been very successful and is still held every year. I also served on the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors as an athlete representative and serve as a member of the Board of Directors for my home club, the Atlanta FSC. As the chair of the Dance Committee, I look to continue the success, development and advancement of ice dancing in the United States and internationally. Immediately, I will need to focus on the changes that are forthcoming from the ISU Congress this spring. We will need to examine how they will affect our own ice dancing program in the United States and how to best prepare our skaters through the test structure to meet these changes. Karen Terry Perreault Ethics Committee Chair Karen Terry Perreault is honored to continue serving as the chair of the Ethics Committee. She is a national judge in singles and pairs and a sectional controller and technical specialist in singles, and has been an international team leader for the past eight years. She has been involved in several committees for U.S. Figure Skating, has served as regional vice chair of the Competitions Committee (North Atlantic Region) and sectional vice chair of the Judges Committee (Eastern Section), and is regional vice chair of the Judges Committee (North Atlantic Region). She is a former national competitor, competing in the U.S. Championships in novice ladies in 1986, junior ladies in 1987 and senior ladies figures in She has earned gold medals in figures, free skating and moves in the field, and has tested through her pre-gold dances. Having earned her doctorate in criminology from Cambridge University, Karen is a professor and the director of the Doctoral Program in Criminal Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Her area of research interest is sexual victimization and, in particular, sexual abuse of - 9 -
children. Most recently, she served as a principal investigator of two national studies evaluating the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests, and has published widely on sex offender treatment, supervision and management in the community. As the chair of the Ethics Committee, it will be my duty to: ensure that those involved in the sport of figure skating, as volunteers or paid professionals, maintain ethical conduct at the highest professional level; educate those involved in the sport about appropriate ethical standards; and endeavor to protect the athletes against harmful conduct or inappropriate behavior. Of particular concern at this time is guidance on conflicts of interest and harassment and abuse. While U.S. Figure Skating has published clear statements on unethical behavior, there is a need for improvement in training and understanding of such behaviors and the appropriate responses to them. Gretchen Bonnie Grievance Committee Chair Gretchen has served as Grievance Committee chair for one year. She is from Columbus, Ohio, and first joined Columbus Figure Skating Club as a skater in the 1970s. After a long absence, she returned in 2003 to begin her judging career. She is a graduate of The Ohio State University and has been a realtor for 24 years. 11 This committee is about the U.S. team. My committee and I will work, as a team, with coaches, athletes and officials within our organization to develop criteria, rules and policies that govern the selection of our athletes to numerous international events. The development and strengthening of this team of constituents lead to an environment of trust, confidence and teamwork. I believe, in this environment, our athletes and officials will have the greatest opportunity to achieve success. As chair, I will also work to develop and maintain that same feeling of trust and teamwork with the Board of Directors and staff at headquarters, in particular the senior director of athlete high performance. The continued funding of our athletes and attendance at as many events as possible are areas in which I feel we must continue to invest and improve. We can only improve that experience and opportunity by continuing to maintain a teamwork approach with headquarters staff and members of the board. During these difficult financial times, we must do all we can to continue to send out as many U.S. team members to international events as possible. We must also be sure that we have a criteria, open, honest discussion and a selection process that continues to bring international success to our athletes and the association. I believe the International Committee is one of the most important committees responsible to U.S. Figure Skating athletes. We will be here to protect and promote our athletes in any possible way. Dawn Eyerly Judges Committee Chair Dawn Eyerly is the chair of the Judges Committee for U.S. Figure Skating, and is honored to continue to serve in that role. In addition to being a national judge in singles and pairs, she is a national technical specialist and a national technical controller in singles and pairs as well as a national data operator. Dawn is a former competitive skater, having earned gold medals in figures, free skating, dance and pairs. She competed at the U.S. Championships in senior ladies figures and for several years in senior pairs and senior dance with her brother and partner Troy Goldstein. She represented the United States internationally in senior pairs in 2001 and 2003, and also starred in shows in the United States and Italy. While competing, Dawn earned her undergraduate degree from UCLA, graduating cum laude and majoring in sociology. She then obtained her law degree in 1996 and was admitted to the California bar that same year. Dawn is a partner with the law firm of Freeman, Freeman & Smiley, LLP in Los Angeles, practicing civil litigation. She has remained very involved in U.S. Figure Skating since she stopped competing, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club. As chair of the Judges Committee, I continue to have three goals. My first is to get more people interested in judging, and to make it easier for qualified candidates to obtain appointments. We have made great strides in this effort over the last few years, and I look forward to continuing to work on this goal. My second goal is to increase the amount of education we are providing to our judges, provide evaluations of our judges' performance and give feedback to our judges. Lastly, we have been working on incorporating technology into our training, and we will continue those efforts throughout the year. The Judges Committee has already laid the foundation for achieving
these goals, and we look forward to making additional significant progress throughout the year. I appreciate your ongoing confidence in me as your chair. Maureen Dalton Membership Committee Chair Maureen has been a very proud member of the Lansing Skating Club for more than 35 years. She and her husband, Bob, reside in Laingsburg, Mich. Prior to moving to Michigan, Maureen spent her career years as a trader s assistant on Wall Street in New York and finally retired from her job as the operations manager at Prudential Securities in Lansing, Mich. Maureen s daughter, Dawn, is a coach at the Wall Ice Arena in New Jersey. Maureen is a national accountant, chair of the Membership Committee, secretary for the Tri States Council of Figure Skating Clubs, vice president of the Detroit Metro Council, president of the Lansing Skating Club and director of the Michigan Basic Skills Series. Once again, I am honored to have been asked to serve as chair of the Membership Committee. I am enjoying the work of keeping the lines of communication open between the clubs, club members, councils, associations, membership, membership recognition and Basic Skills. I have been blessed to work with an incredible group of committee members who always seem to be there when I need them. We have some wonderful projects in the works again, but in this very difficult economic time, it is still going to take all our energies, creativity and enthusiasm to retain our members. We will continue to always listen to everyone and try and provide them with helpful, positive suggestions and ideas. Leslie Gianelli Memorial Fund Committee Chair Leslie Gianelli has been involved in figure skating for most of her life, first as a skater and then as an official for the past 20 years. Prior to being appointed Memorial Fund Committee chair in 2007, she was chair of the Marketing Committee and has been a member of the Strategic Planning, Nominating and Membership committees. She is a national singles and pairs judge, regional dance judge and sectional referee for singles and pairs, and she co-chaired the 2003 World Figure Skating Championships in Washington, D.C., and 2007 Skate America in Hartford, Conn. She is on the board of the Capitol Skating Fund in Washington, D.C., and works for the Connecticut Hospital Association. The Memorial Fund provides financial support for competitive skaters and figure skating athletes pursuing college and graduate degrees is an important year for the Memorial Fund, as we observe the 50 th anniversary of the tragic plane crash in which all the members of the 1961 U.S. World Team perished. During this commemorative year, a feature film and special events throughout the country will honor the team, preserve their legacy and keep their memory alive. Deveny Deck Pairs Committee Chair Deveny Deck became involved with U.S. Figure Skating as a Basic Skills skater. At the Detroit Skating Club, she progressed as a competitor, earning the 1985 U.S. junior pairs title. She and her partner participated in both national and international competitions at the senior level, including 1985 Skate America. Deveny has served as an athlete member and member-at-large of the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors. She has held several committee appointments and is the chair of the Pairs Committee. Deveny was a member of the LOC Board of Directors for the 2003 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Washington, D.C. She also serves as an ISU judge, a U.S. team leader and a technical specialist and controller for both singles and pairs at the national level. Deveny holds an A.B. with honors from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from the University of Detroit. She resides in northern Virginia with her husband and daughter. As chair of the Pairs Committee, I will work to represent the interests of Pairs Committee members and the greater U.S. Figure Skating pairs skating community, and promote pairs skating at all levels in the United States and in the international arena
