I would also like to provide any assistance necessary to any of the committee chairs within Athlete Services. It is an honor to be asked to continue to serve as the Membership Development Group Coordinator. The five committees under the Membership Development Group Coordinator provide major building blocks for the organization. It s important to keep these areas growing refining and refreshing areas that are working as well as reviewing and refocusing areas that are not. It s also important to keep the activities of these areas appealing to a wide spectrum and most of all, FUN! I look forward to continuing to work with and for these Committees to help them meet their goals and be extraordinarily successful. I am looking forward to working cohesively with the PSA and the Coaches Committee to promote the sport of figure skating and bring ideas from grassroots to elite coaches to the organization. I am so excited to bring the passion that I have for coaching into U.S. Figure Skating and I hope that this opportunity will give me a chance to give back to the sport that has given me and my family so much over the years.
Gail Sombati Adult Skating Chair: Skating is Sombati s passion. She began when she was 7 years old after seeing Ice Capades. Of course, she thought she could go out and do everything that she saw in that wonderful show. Shortly after that, there was a brand new ice rink built in her hometown, and they were having sign ups to be in the very first ice show, so her dad signed her up. She never was a competitive skater or took any tests, but in the 11 years that followed, she continued taking group lessons, accomplished getting her Axel and enjoyed doing ice shows. At the age of 25, the skating bug struck again and struck Sombati hard. She learned that there was something called an adult skating program through U.S. Figure Skating. She took all of the adult free skate tests by the time she was 27 and competed in the adult gold level for many years. She is now a PSA rated coach and enjoys sharing her passion of skating with others. Ironically, she is now the skating director at the very same rink where she learned to skate. Sombati has been on the Adult Skating Committee since 2002, having served most of that time as the Midwest vice chair. She enjoys being an adult skating advocate. She listens to the concerns and questions of adult skaters and takes them very seriously. At the same time, she has been able to determine what is a valid concern and what is simply idle chatter. She has chaired three Midwestern Adult Sectional Figure Skating Championships, including the 2011 championships which just took place. She was also a volunteer at the 2009 World Figure Skating Championships. I consider it an honor to be nominated for the Chair of Adult Skating. My dual roles as a skater and coach as well as my experience of being a three-time chairperson of Midwestern Adult Sectional Championships will allow me to look at things from all different angles and perspectives. I will continue the diligent work of the past chairs to improve upon the structure of adult skating. This includes but is not limited to testing, marketing and the premiere adult skating event, the U.S. Adult Championships, fondly known as AN among adult skaters.
Benjamin Ben Miller Athlete Development Chair: Miller is a former national, international and World Junior competitor as a singles skater. After finishing his singles career he went on to train in ice dancing and passed his gold dances, making a four time U.S. Figure Skating gold medalist. Miller is currently serving U.S. Figure Skating as the chair of the Athlete Development Committee and as an athlete representative on the International Committee. He has served as a team leader for both figure skating and synchronized skating events. He currently coaches at the St. Paul Figure Skating Club in St. Paul, Minn., and is also a senior at the University of St. Thomas, where he is pursuing a bachelor s degree in business. I am looking forward to serving as the Chair of the Athlete Development Committee Chair for U.S. Figure Skating. I will continue to work with my committee to innovate and find new and innovative solutions that keep our athletes in the sport and progressing towards their personal best.
Alex Chang Coaches Chair: As a former national and international competitor, Chang understands the dedication, integrity and collaboration required of competitive figure skating, and he is delighted to serve the interests of skaters and coaches of all levels. His enthusiasm for teaching is complemented by his service as a national technical specialist and sectional data operator. Prior to coaching, Chang received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University and served as marketing manager for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Disney Consumer Products. He currently serves as coaching chair of the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors and as the U.S. Figure Skating representative to PSA. He is honored to serve as chair of the Coaches Committee. I am honored to serve another term as Chair of the Coaches Committee. I hope to bring clarity to coaches through a series of nation-wide IJS webinars specifically for coaches following the rule changes this year. Additionally, I am working with PSA to create an online coaches destination/community as a fixed resource to address major coaching questions and concerns (Rule Updates, Membership Issues, etc.). I hope to provide improved communication as well as renewed direction and vision to our community of coaches across the nation. It is my firm belief that coaches have a profound impact on shaping the views, opinions, and identities of young athletes, one skater at a time. I hope to share my love for coaching with my coaching colleagues.
Michelle Zeles-Hahn Collegiate Program Chair: Michelle Zeles-Hahn began skating at the age of 4 and has never stopped. She has a passion and a dedication to this special sport that is evidenced by her competitive career (she is double gold medalist, 2 time sectional singles competitor, and national competitor in precision and synchronized skating) and her work as an official (sectional judge, regional referee, and non-qual technical controller). Michelle has actively volunteered and been an officer in the many clubs she has been a part of and helped to run numerous competitions. She is honored to be nominated again for the position as Chair of the Collegiate Committee. Spending 11 years in college to obtain 3 degrees (most recently a PhD in bioengineering), she has been a collegiate skater for quite some time and understands the challenges and opportunities it presents. She has been a member of the collegiate committee for the past 7 years and was National Vice Chair of intercollegiate skating prior to being appointed chair two years ago. The position, as I see it, should be one of an open dialogue between all the collegiate chairs/vice chairs and the collegiate skaters. These skaters are at the point where they can give tremendous feedback and come up with great ideas. As such, there is currently a Facebook Page dedicated to the Collegiate Program. It has been used to post intercollegiate schedules and results, scholarship opportunities, and information about the U.S. Collegiate Championship. I hope to further build on this site with ongoing discussions between colleges and universities. Running the U.S. Collegiate Championships has not been financially viable. After numerous discussions within the committee, we hope to move forward with some ideas on how to improve the competition financially. Collegiate synchronized skating has come a long way - the skating is incredible and brings such school spirit. The intercollegiate program has been fantastic for all collegiate skaters, not just those at the junior and senior level. It brings together skaters of all levels and backgrounds and makes skating a team sport. The program is self-sufficient and studentrun, with more schools creating teams all the time (currently we have around 100 teams!). This year the committee was budgeted a small amount of money to help intercollegiate teams host their own competitions. It helped three schools have profitable competitions. In addition, there is a private donor who has generously given to the collegiate program. That money has been used over the past four years to aid the LOC hosing the U.S. Collegiate Championship. The donor also created a matching funds account and I encourage those with a passion for collegiate skating to donate to the fund by going to the U.S. Figure Skating website, clicking on the donate button, then memorial fund, finally Give to the Memorial Fund and selecting the collegiate program. Finally, the Pioneer Fund has established two scholarships. The Helen M. McLoraine Scholarship assists current and former skaters in achieving their college education goals with yearly scholarships (applications due each February). The Pioneer Fund also awards a $5,000 scholarship to the winners of both the Championship Senior Ladies and Men at the U.S. Collegiate Championships each summer. I believe the collegiate programs are vital to our sport. U.S. Figure Skating loses a lot of members once they reach college. These skaters are an important source of our future coaches, volunteers, and officials. It is important that we find ways to keep them interested and active in our sport.
Lynn Goldman Competitions Chair: Lynn is very excited and honored to serve her third year as the Chair of the Competitions Committee. She is a national judge for singles and pairs and a national technical controller for singles. She is also a novice sectional dance judge and a sectional dance referee. She has been involved in several committees for U.S. Figure Skating as well as being past president, treasurer, test chair, competitions chair and delegate for the Austin Figure Skating Club. She has passed the 7 th figure test, the equivalent of the junior free skating test and the bronze dance tests. She was a performer with Holiday on Ice before attending the University of Texas. She has a bachelor s degree in clinical nutrition and a master s degree in health care administration. After working more than 20 years at the Children s Hospital of Austin as a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator and the clinical/research coordinator of the Cystic Fibrosis Program. She is currently working for an Independent Review Board reviewing and approving clinical research trials. The Competitions Committee will continue to make sure the competition rules are fair, up-to-date and meet the needs of our athletes, from the grass roots to the elite. The standardized non- qualifying announcement/template is ready and will be posted on the U.S. Figure Skating web site after Governing Council. The goal of this project is to make competition requirements the same across the U.S.; making it easier for clubs, skaters, coaches and officials. The Competitions Committee and sub-committees will continue to educate and promote our referees, accountants, music coordinators/technicians, announcers and ice technicians. The restructuring of the Junior Figure Skating Championships will begin this 2013 season. I am very excited to see how this plays out. As promised, after the Championships in 2014, the competitions committee will evaluate and re-assess.
John Millier Dance Chair: Tests: 3 rd Figure Novice Free Junior Pair Gold Dance and Free Dance and some Internationals Competition: Pairs Intermediate through Junior (Novice Sectional competitor) Dance New England Champions at the Intermediate, Novice and Junior levels Sectional Dance Champions at Novice and Junior levels National Jr. Dance Bronze Medalist Senior Dance Competitor at Sectionals and Nationals Participant at U.S. Sports Festival 1990 Coaching: Took part in the collegiate program where you could judge and coach at the same time for while in school and for 5 years afterwards. I coached low level Figures, Free Skating and Pairs. I coached all levels of Ice Dancing including National competitors. I was the skating director for the summer programs in Maine with close to 100 skaters involved and was the director for the Dance programs in several clubs throughout Massachusetts. Judging: I began judging while still an active competitor, earning my low-test appointments shortly after retiring from competition. I judge all disciplines however focused on Ice Dancing from the start. I earned my International appointment in 2001 and my ISU appointment in I am also a dance referee, specialist and controller. U.S. Figure Skating Involvement: I have served on the Dance Committee on and off since the late 80s, and was the Eastern Vice Chair in I became chair of the committee in I have also served on the Athletes Advisory Committee and was chosen to represent them in the Athlete s Development Sub Committee. I was the first to suggest a camp for Novice Skaters at Nationals and chaired the event for the first two years. This camp was very successful and held for over a decade. During that time, I also served on the Board of Directors as an Athlete Representative. I am now involved in the Dance Athlete Development Subcommittee and have been co-chairing the new National Dance Camp for the past two year. Currently I serve as a member of the Board of Directors for my home club, The Atlanta FSC. Since coming on board as the Dance chair two years ago, there have been many changes and advancements in our discipline. The most exciting accomplishment in our sport is the historic success of our U.S. skaters. Not only did we occupy two spots on last year s World Championship podium, but for the first time in history, the U.S. team of Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the event. This has been many years in the making and we continue to see great depth in our program. The event at Nationals this year was a true testament of that. However, we can t take our eye off the ball. For the future, I am committed to not only making sure we stay competitive at the elite levels, but to also grow our developmental skaters as well. We need to focus on both attraction and retention within our discipline and be mindful of the economic impact on not only our skaters but our coaches as well. I hope to broaden our pool of talented skaters as well as coaches. The past two years have been both busy and rewarding. However, I have a large to do list already on my plate. I m looking forward to working hard with my committee on those and other issues as they arise.
Karen Terry Perreault Ethics Chair: Karen Terry Perreault is honored to be selected to serve again as the Chair of the Ethics Committee. She is a National Judge in Singles and Pairs, a Controller and Technical Specialist in Singles, and has been an International Team Leader for ten years. She has been involved in several committees for U.S. Figure Skating and has served as Regional Vice Chair of the Competitions Committee (North Atlantic Region), Sectional Vice Chair of the Judges Committee (Eastern Section) and is currently Regional Vice Chair of the Judges Committee (North Atlantic Region). She is a former National competitor, competing in the U.S. Championships in Novice Ladies in 1986, Junior Ladies in 1987 and Senior Ladies Figures in She has earned gold medals in Figures, Free Skating and Moves in the Field, and has tested through her Pre-Gold dances. Having earned her doctorate in Criminology from Cambridge University, Karen is currently a Criminal Justice Professor and the Dean of Research at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Her area of research interest is sexual victimization, and in particular sexual abuse of children. Most recently, she served as a Principal Investigator of two national studies evaluating the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests and has published widely on sex offender treatment, supervision and management in the community. As the Chair of the Ethics Committee, it is my duty to: ensure that those involved in the sport of figure skating, as volunteers or paid professionals, maintain ethical conduct at the highest professional level; educate those involved in the sport about appropriate ethical standards; and, endeavor to protect the athletes against harmful conduct or inappropriate behavior. I will continue to work with the Chair of the Grievance committee to clearly articulate what is meant by ethical behavior and the process for grieving behavior that does not fit this standard. I will also continue to work with the PSA to ensure that our standards and procedures are complimentary and in the best interest of the skaters, coaches, parents, judges, and others involved with this sport.
Steve Wolkin Grievance Chair: Wolkin has two daughters who have been actively involved in figure skating as young children and became involved in synchronized skating. Both daughters currently coach synchronized skating. Wolkin is currently a trustee of the Shaker Figure Skating Club and a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Cleveland Council of Figure Skating Clubs. He has been an officer of the Shaker Figure Skating Club, the Garfield Figure Skating Club, TriStates Council of Figure Skating Clubs and the Greater Cleveland Council of Figure Skating Clubs. He is a test judge and a synchronized skating competition judge. He has been an attorney practicing in the family law area for over 30 years in Cleveland, Ohio. He resides in Shaker Heights, Ohio with his wife, Connie, and they recently celebrated their 35 th wedding anniversary. I would be honored to serve as Chair of the Grievance Committee. In the last 30 years, I have been extensively involved in the mediation and representing children in family law cases. In this position, it is common to find yourself attempting to negotiate difficult issues between parents. I have found it extremely important to allow people to have their say and to provide them a forum in order to express their issues. The handling of a grievance should be done expeditiously but with a view to allowing sufficient time for each party to know that they have had a forum to address the issues brought to the attention of U.S. Figure Skating. Fairness is essential to the process. Like family law issues, grievances can become highly charged and emotional matters for the parties involved. They should be handles quickly, taking into consideration the right of each party to be heard on the issues with a determination in a reasonable period of time.
Doug Williams International Chair: I have experienced skating at many levels. From a recreational skater to World Team member, from club volunteer of local competitions to President of the U.S. Championships held in Los Angeles, I am also a U.S. Figure Skating official of various disciplines and levels. Below, are some bullet points of my skating and professional life: Competitive Skating & Professional Skating Regional through World Team Member Gold Medalist in Figures, Freeskating and Pairs Pre-Gold Dances Blades of Glory, double for John Heder and Will Ferrell 2007 America s Next Top Model 2004 & 2005 member of Torvill and Dean Face the Music World Tour Judging and Refereeing & Technical Panel National Judge and Referee o Recent activity as a Referee at the 2012 U.S. Championships International Judge o Recent activity as a Judge at 2011 Skate America National Technical Panel member in Singles and Pairs Club and LOC President, 2002 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Los Angeles Co-Chair, 1997 Junior Olympic Figure Skating Championships All Year FSC board member since 1980 U.S. Figure Skating Board and Committees I have served on various committees of U.S. Figure Skating, including the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. I have held those positions as an athlete member and also as a non-athlete member. Occupation Director, Digital Business Operations; Sony DADC in Marina del Rey, California Have worked in Film/TV Production and Distribution since 1984 This committee is about the U.S. TEAM and helping to provide our team with the best opportunities to be at their very best on the international stage. My committee and I will work, as a team, with coaches, athletes and officials within our organization, to develop criteria, rules and policies that govern the selection of our athletes to numerous International events. The development and strengthening, of this team of constituents, leads to an environment of trust, confidence and team work. I believe, in this environment, our athletes and officials will have the greatest opportunity to achieve success. As Chair, I will also work to develop and maintain that same feeling of trust and teamwork with the Board of Directors and staff at Headquarters, in particular, the Director of High Performance. The continued funding of our athletes and attendance at as many events as possible are areas that I feel we must continue to invest and improve. We can only improve that experience and opportunity by continuing to maintain a teamwork approach with Headquarters staff and members of the Board. During these difficult financial times, we must do all that we can to continue to send out as many U.S. Team members, to International events, as possible. We must also be sure that we have a criteria, open and honest discussion and a selection process that continues to bring International success to our athletes and the Association. I believe the International Committee is one of the most important committees responsible to U.S. Figure Skating athletes. We will be here to protect and promote our athletes in every possible way.

Similarly I look forward to working with a working group of ISU officials to examine trends in judging and promotion activities in other countries and getting a better understanding of the direction of the ISU and bring that information to the IJOC to work on an updated strategic plan for our international and ISU officials. I am proud to continue working with the group to prepare our judges and officials to be the best-informed, most respected, and most effective team on the international circuit, which relies heavily on information collection and dissemination.
Kathleen Harmon Judges Chair: Kathleen grew up in the Southern California area, where she began her involvement with figure skating. Her entire family has been involved in the sport, her father as a performer in shows, her mother as a competitor and club volunteer and sister as a coach. She is currently an ISU Ice Dance Judge, International Singles and Pairs Judge, International Ice Dance Referee, a National Judge and Referee for Singles/Pairs and Dance, as well as a Sectional Technical Controller, Data Operator and Video Replay Operator. Kathleen has served on various committees and as a National Vice Chair of the JETs Committee, Sectional Vice Chair of the Judges Committee for Singles/Pairs as well Regional Vice Chair of the Judges committee for Singles/Pairs and Dance. Kathleen holds a Bachelor s Degree as well as a Paralegal Certificate, working as a litigation paralegal in the insurance defense field for nearly twenty years. She currently resides in Washington State with her husband, Kevin where she is active at local test sessions, competitions, and seminars. As chair of the Judges Committee, I will seek ways to continue bringing more interested individuals into the judging field as well as working to retain our current judges. I will work with the committee and headquarters staff to expand the educational programs for both our test and competition judges through online training programs, providing additional ways for our officials to get affordable educational opportunities, promoting a more consistent standard nationwide. Additionally, I will seek to expand the feedback provided to our judges on their performance as well as continue providing online testing for appointments and promotions.
Joe Blount Membership Chair: President of The Skating Club of Boston for the past twelve years and served the club in numerous other capacities since Served as operation manager for three U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and one ISU World Championship. Co-Chair and Operation Manager for 2012 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships Served on U.S. Figure Skating Competitions Committee Delegate to Governing Council the pass twelve years Practicing Architect for fifty years, retired Served on the Town of Barrington Rhode Island Planning Board for fifteen years Graduated from Rhode Island School of Design Retired Naval Officer In reviewing the membership of our organization this past year it is abundantly clear the increases in memberships have been directly related to our Basic Skills Program, and although we need to continue to support that program I believe we need to encourage and assist clubs in retaining and expanding their membership. Presently the Membership Committee s Sectional Vice Chairs have been asked to review all of the clubs in their section whose membership is at 25 or less to see what can be done to increase their membership by adding or expanding existing programs, this outreach will continue. It is my intention to establish an agenda for the committee with the input from our Group Coordinator, Sectional Vice Chairs, Chair of the Basic Skills Subcommittee and U.S, Figure Skating Staff. I have been disappointed in the response to ballot questions and request for input from the members of the Membership Committee at all levels and intend to review and make recommendation for change in order that we receive as much feedback as possible for those who have agreed to serve.
