Award Recipients Takara Dei & Josh Venema Takara and Josh placed 3rd in the Novice Pair event at the 2017 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. 4 Marilyn Chidlow Volunteer Awards Marilyn Chidlow is a native of Ponoka who has been involved in every level of skating volunteerism from the local club level through to the National Board level as the Skate Canada President from 2000 to Marilyn s heart has always been with grassroots skating as demonstrated by her commitment to the development of the CanSkate Program while she was the National Recreational Skating Chair. 7 2017 Alberta Figure Skating Foundation Dennis McFarlane Award This award is in memory of Dennis McFarlane. A former National competitor in three disciplines, Dennis began judging when he was a teenager. He reached the highest level recognized by the International Skating Union when he achieved World and Olympic Judge and Referee status in singles, pairs and ice dance. He was one of only a few judges in Canada to have held ISU Referee status in all disciplines at the same time. One of his most exciting judging experiences was being on the panel when Elizabeth Manley won the silver medal at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic Games. Prior to his passing in 2011, he received Skate Canada Honorary Official status and celebrated 60 years of officiating. Guadalupe Raed Di Bari The recipient of the Dennis McFarlane Award is Guadalupe Raed Di Bari. Guadalupe was the highest placing competitor in the Pre-Novice Woman category at the 2017 Skate Canada Challenge. Pat Sprague Award This award is in memory of Pat Sprague, a long-time figure skating organizer and volunteer. Pat was a dedicated mother of two skaters who was very active in the figure skating community. Her commitment kept her involved in the sport, even after her children moved on from their skating careers. For 20 years she acted as Chair of the Wild Rose Figure Skating Competition. Those years of dedicated volunteer work were a contributing factor to the success of the event. She was also a Board member and Past Chair of the Alberta Figure Skating Foundation and was known as a wonderful volunteer with a respect for all aspects of the sport. Black Gold Open The recipient of the Pat Sprague Award is the Black Gold Open Team. This team was the highest placing synchronized skating team who competed at the 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships.

11 2017 Section Awards & Bursaries Winnie Silverthorne Award This award is named in the memory of Winnie Silverthorne, one of Alberta s great figure skating coaches. Born in England, Winnie was a former pairs skater with her brother Dennis. The Silverthorne s placed fourth at the ISU World Championships and fifth at the 1948 Olympics. In 1950 Winnie moved to Ontario, Canada and became a figure skating coach. She later moved to Calgary where she coached at the Glencoe Club followed by the Calgary Winter Club. Winnie coached skaters of all levels and ages, including many gold medalists and Canadian Championship competitors. Her longtime student, the late Brian Pockar, was a three-time Canadian Men s Champion and 1982 ISU World Championship bronze medalist. Kaetlyn Osmond The recipient of the Winnie Silverthorne Award is Kaetlyn Osmond. Kaetlyn had an outstanding season where she reclaimed her Senior Women s Canadian Championship title and finished her season as the 2017 World Silver Medalist. Keegan Messing The recipient of the Winnie Silverthorne Award is Keegan Messing. Keegan had an incredible performance at the 2017 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships, where he placed 5th and earned a spot back on the National Team.

12 2017 Section Awards & Bursaries Kurt Browning Award Nicknamed the kid from Caroline, Alberta s Kurt Browning revolutionized the sport of figure skating with his unique combination of strong, yet graceful jumps, creativity and charismatic appeal. In 1988, he entered the record books as the first athlete to complete a quadruple jump in World competition, forever changing the face of men s figure skating. One of Canada s greatest male skaters, Browning captured four ISU World Championship titles. His unparalleled success and style earned him legions of fans around the world and many honours, including the prestigious Order of Canada. Joining the professional ranks in 1994, he continues to grace the ice with a presence like no other. Triena Robinson The recipient of the Kurt Browning Award is Triena Robinson. Triena was the highest placing Junior Woman at the 2017 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships, where she placed 4th. Brian Pockar Award The Brian Pockar Award is named in the memory of 1982 World bronze medalist, Brian Pockar. A native Calgarian, Brian won the Canadian men s figure skating title three times culminating with a bronze medal at the ISU World Championships. Upon turning professional he continued to capture audiences touring with the Ice Capades and other skating productions. His success as an amateur carried into the professional ranks where he won events such as the prestigious World Professional Championships. Off the ice, Brian provided commentary for CTV Sports and became a respected figure skating analyst. His contributions were also felt in his numerous volunteer roles, including his participation as a member of the Advisory Committee for the 1988 Calgary Olympic Games Organizing Committee. Ethan Scott The recipient of the Brian Pockar Award is Ethan Scott. Ethan was the Juvenile Men U14 Champion at the 2017 Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Sectional Championships.

13 2017 Section Awards & Bursaries Wayne Feil Memorial Evaluator/Judges Award The Wayne Feil Memorial Evaluator/Judges Award is in memory of Wayne Feil who dedicated himself to the development of figure skating in Alberta. An avid and accomplished figure skater, Wayne channeled his love of the sport into volunteer work with Skate Canada: Alberta NWT/Nunavut. As an evaluator and judge, he traveled to test days and competitions, encouraging skaters across the province. His commitment to the success of both the skaters and the STARSkate program was a testament of his devotion to figure skating. Wayne also assisted the Section in developing what was then Precision Skating, now known as Synchronized Skating. Kristen Belcourt In , Kristen Belcourt evaluated hundreds of tests across the Section and specifically in the Calgary Region. Kristen has been a steady contributor to test days throughout her officiating career. Her passion for all levels of skating is evident in her enthusiasm and dedication when at test days and events. Jesse Smith Memorial Award This award is in memory of Jesse Smith. Jesse spent his entire life pursuing his passion and love for skating. He achieved his dream of competing at the senior level and upon his retirement from competitive skating, Jesse toured professionally with Disney on Ice. Being a perfectionist, he mastered every piece of music that he played on the piano. Watching Jesse skate, his appreciation of music was evident. Jesse is remembered as being humble, determined, passionate,courageous and his philosophy of life was Discover it, Live it. Jesse lost his battle with cancer on November 7, 2013 and the Fort Macleod FSC and Jesse s family are honored to remember him through this award. Jayden Johnson The recipient of the Jesse Smith Memorial Award is Jayden Johnson. Jayden won the Pre-Juvenile Men U11 event at the 2017 Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Sectional Championships.

14 2017 Section Awards & Bursaries Pre-Juvenile Women Awards presented by Juliette Thievin & Grace Smyth The recipients of the Pre-Juvenile Award are Juliette Thievin, Pre-Juvenile Women U11 and Grace Smyth, Pre-Juvenile Women U13. These recipients were the gold medalists in their respective categories at the 2017 Skate Canada:Alberta- NWT/Nunavut Sectional Championships. Juliette Thievin Grace Smyth Shantelle Hale Awards Shantelle Hale was born in 1978 and started her skating career with the Strathcona Figure Skating Club. She had big dreams, a bubbly personality and always a friendly smile and greeting. When she passed away, Shantelle was on the Alberta Figure Skating Team and was one of the top junior ladies in the Section. Skating was her life, her dream, her passion - everything she did centered around skating. Shantelle will always be remembered for the beautiful, extraordinary young lady she had become and this award keeps her dreams alive. Sophie Do & Maja Husain The recipients of the Shantelle Hale Award are Sophie Do, Juvenile Women U14 and Maja Husain, Juvenile Women U12. These recipients were the gold medalists in their respective categories at the 2017 Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Sectional Championships. Sophie Do Maja Husain

15 2017 Section Awards & Bursaries Coach Achievement Award presented by Clyde Hammer The recipient of the Coach Achievement Award is Clyde Hammer. Clyde has been instrumental in enhancing the Fliteway SC s Pre-CanSkate, CanSkate and competitive skating programs for the past few years. With his 28 years of coaching experience, professionalism and communication skills, the club membership has grown substantially in the last couple of years. Clyde is an exceptional role model by teaching everyone that through hard work, determination and dedication anything can be possible. Clyde helps to build confidence in his skaters both on the ice, and off the ice and helps everyone achieve their goals. Barbara Graham Award The Barbara Graham Award is named in memory of Barbara Graham, one of Skate Canada s Hall of Fame members and a Canadian skating legend. A former Canadian Junior Pairs Champion and world level judge, Barbara was Technical Director for the then Canadian Figure Skating Association (CFSA) from 1972 to Her great love and passion for figure skating was supplemented by her outstanding technical knowledge and ability to envision, develop and establish programming to support the progression of the sport. Following her retirement from the CFSA, Barbara traveled overseas and was State Coaching Director for the Ice Skating Association of Queensland, Australia. She later returned to Canada and settled in Edmonton where she was the Skating Development Specialist for the Section. Jessica Behiel & Jackson Behiel The recipients of the Barbara Graham Award are Jessica and Jackson Behiel. This team won the bronze medal at the 2017 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in the Novice Dance event.

16 2017 Section Awards & Bursaries Pat Fischer Award The Pat Fischer Award is in the memory of Pat s dedication as a volunteer and official. An invaluable member of the figure skating community in Alberta, Pat officiated at numerous test days and competitions each year. She achieved Gold Evaluator and Junior Competitive Singles status and was a respected judge and mentor. Her vast knowledge and experience was utilized as a resource to assist fellow judges and evaluators and to educate coaches. As well as officiating, Pat also volunteered as a Section accountant and technical representative for competitions. She was President and Past-President of Calalta Community Figure Skating Club and was a member of the Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Board of Directors as Officials Coordinating Committee Chair. Brian Chiem The recipient of the Pat Fischer Award is Brian Chiem. Brian was the highest placing Section skater in the Pre-Novice Men s event at the 2017 Skate Canada Challenge where he won gold. Spirit & Passion of Skating Award Ana Sotelo Alfaro Ana is an inspiration to everyone she meets. When she emigrated to Canada in 2011, she began skating as an adult at the Ice Palace FSC. She is the first one on the ice and last off, and she often brings tears of joy when she or anyone else achieves a personal goal. Ana encourages all the adult skaters she meets to keep going if we love it, even when our bodies, work or life demands get in the way. She keeps pushing herself as an adult skater to accomplish her goals. Being on the ice is a dream come true for Ana. Creating the Edge for Life Award Cynthia Gauvreau Cynthia has been skating for over 40 years and her passion shows through her committed skating schedule of skating 4-5 days a week. She volunteers her time to assist where help is needed for local competitions and to the Ice Palace FSC. She has passed several tests, loves to skate and encourages all the skaters on the ice with her. She is an adult representative for the section, giving feedback on seminars, clinics and more.

17 2017 Skate Canada Achievement Awards Section CompetitiveSkate Athlete Award Jessica Behiel & Jackson Behiel Jessica and Jackson s work ethic and positive attitude have allowed them to continue to excel year after year. Their patience and passion for the sport allow them to achieve their dreams. As dual discipline skaters, they set a good example of how goals can be achieved through hard work and dedication. Section StarSkate Athlete Award Deanna Klein Deanna has always given figure skating her all. She has persevered through two serious injuries and has continued to work on her ability and help other skaters even when she has been unable to skate. She shows a commitment to the young skaters of the club through her assistance with the club s CanSkate program. Section Volunteer Award Kirsten MacDonald Kirsten has been a dedicated volunteer to her club for the past 13 years. Kirsten has volunteered countless hours at the arena during test days, carnivals and showcase events for the Edson FSC. She is dedicated and extremely efficient. Kirsten has always gone above and beyond her duties with impeccable attention to detail and she has been an outstanding representative of the Edson FSC.

18 2017 Skate Canada Achievement Awards Volunteer of Excellence Award Krista Sellers Krista has been and continues to be dedicated to the sport of figure skating within the Calgary Region, Section and Nationally. She has volunteered as an official for the past 20 years and is dedicated to helping at competitions both locally and across Canada. She has held various roles throughout the years at the Club, Region and Section level, including being a member of the Section Board of Directors. She acts as a mentor for new volunteers and is always available to answer questions or provide a helping hand when needed. Section Program Assistant Award Samantha Daigle Samantha is dedicated, enthusiastic and always willing to help. She comes to skating with a smile on her face every day. She has been a wonderful role model to all the skaters in the Tofield Skating Club. Her initiative can be seen throughout each CanSkate session from beginning to end and she has been a huge asset to the CanSkate Program. Section CanSkate Athlete of the Year Kayden Frederick Kayden is a high functioning autistic child who has excelled on the ice in learning to skate, but also has grown emotionally and socially. The accomplishments he has achieved over the past 3 years with the Foothills SC are an inspiration to all those who interact with him. Kayden is always excited to get on the ice, as he can often be found waiting at the gate watching the clock and excitedly calling out it s time when the clock changes to 5:30 pm. Section Officials Award Kristen Belcourt Kristen has been an official in the Section for the past 9 years. She evaluates at test days on a consistent basis throughout the Section and judges at many competitions on a yearly basis. Kristen not only dedicates her time as an official but also assists Tech Reps behind the scenes. She has been a key support role with the Section s Central Registration system. Section Volunteer Coach Award Sylvie DeCaen Wandzura Sylvie has been a coach for over 25 years and shows a true passion for the sport. The Figure 8 SC was very fortunate to have Sylvie volunteer coach their skaters in a time of need and transition this season. Sylvie shows compassion, understanding and dedication and truly loves to be there for the skaters and her fellow coaches.

19 2017 Section Awards & Bursaries Special Olympics Skaters of the Year Award JorDen Tyson & Benjamin Maeseele The recipients of the Special Olympics Skaters of the Year Award are Jor- Den Tyson and Benjamin Maeseele. Both skaters had a memorable season, representing Canada in March 2017 at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria. JorDen has been skating for about 5 years with the Lake Bonavista SC. She has competed in various competitions, including Canada Games and the National Special Olympics. Benjamin joined Special Olympics Calgary 3 years ago and trains at the Springbank SC. He has competed at the provincial level in Special Olympics up to the National level in singles and dance. JorDen and Benjamin both have shown great dedication towards their training and working towards goals that have helped them reach the world level. Some of their club mates have said: They are an inspiration to us all. Gateway Skating Club Post-Secondary Bursary In honour of their 50th anniversary in 2014, the Gateway Skating Club introduced the Gateway Skating Club Post-Secondary Bursary. This Bursary encourages skater to contiune competing while pursing post-secondary education. Jane Gray Jane is an excellent role model for all skaters in our Section. She balances high level competitive skating, competing at the National level in Senior Ladies and post secondary studies in Anthropology at the University of Calgary. She devotes countless volunteer hours to assisting the Canmore SC and is kind and generous with her time. Jane enjoys assisting the younger skaters and encouraging them along in their skating.
