1 Overview of the 3D Championship 2007 competition Pilots will be required to submit 5 set manoeuvres at the highest K factor they are capable of performing. K factors will be used to split pilots into groups based on skill level, if required, up to 2 groups. After all pilots have performed their set manouevres, each pilot will then perform their 3 minute freestyle flight which may or may not be set to the pilots choice of music. The combined scores from the two rounds will determine the fly-off positions. The fly-offs will see the top pilots from each group perform their set manouevres and freestyle flights again (from a zeroed score) and the result of these fly-offs will determine the winners. Who can enter? The 3D Championship 2007 competition is open to every 3D pilot in the UK, and will be judged using the world renowned 3DX format. Previous competitions have no bearing on the entry eligibility of any pilot. Further information - and how to enter Please visit for full details, entry form, supporting downloads, competition news, etc. Are you the best UK 3D flyer for 2007? 4 Set Manoeuvres 2007 No. 'k ' Manoeuvre Judges Notes 1 1 Travelling Backwards Flip With the aircraft travelling forwards along the flightline, a backwards flip is performed. The manoeuvre will be flown at medium speed maintaining constant height, direction and speed throughout x 4 point Backward Roll With the model moving backwards at medium pace, the model will be aileron-rolled twice, each roll being clearly delineated by 4 hesitation points Bounce This manoeuvre consists of 2 inverted stationary 540 pirouettes, 1 in each direction with the minimum hesitation at direction reversal. The manoeuvre will be entered from a stationary hover and should start and finish nose-in. 4 1 Stationary Metronomes This manoeuvre consists of a repetitive metronome with 6 pitch-reversals. The manoeuvre will be symmetrical about the centre-line and of consistent height and speed. The manoeuvre may be performed tailboom vertical or horizontal 5 1 Pie Dish The helicopter will prescribe remote circuits centred on the contest centreline. The model will maintain an acute angle while flying sideways at constant speed, altitude and attitude. There will be at least 4 complete revolutions, skids in, skids out, nose up or nose-down. 6 1 Figure 8 Inverted Circuit The model should describe a uniform Figure 8 at a slow pace with consistent height and correctly centered Coronet The coronet is a series of tail-low Rainbows* each finishing with a 90 pirouette before moving on to the next Rainbow. In this way a square circuit is flown. There will be minimal hesitation at the pirouettes Tumbling Loop The model will perform continuous Forward- or Backward tumbles while it describes a Forward or Backward Loop in the sky. The Loop will be centred and the rate of tumbling will be uniform K 1.5 Auto* The K1.5 auto consists of an autorotational landing with a 360 Aileron Roll. The manoeuvre will show consistent height loss, uniform forward speed and land as close as possible to a marker positioned 3m in front of the pilot on the field centreline Inverted Nose-in Circuit The circuit will be flat and slow with consistent height and properly centred on the pilot and judges Inverted Backward Loops This manoeuvre consists of 2 consecutive inverted backward loops entered from backward inverted flight Sustained Chaos The chaos should be sustained for a minimum of 10 seconds, up to a maximum of 30 seconds. The Manoeuvre will be stationary in front of the pilot and accurately centred Pirouetting Roll / Flip (2) The 2 pirouetting rolls / flips will be executed as a travelling manoeuvre continuously with no hesitation Snake This snake-like manoeuvre should be performed along the flight line and consist of at least 4 joined crescents, tailboom-horizontal, switching skids-in to skids-out and vice-versa between crescents Slapper This manoeuvre consists of a series of tailboom-vertical metronomes with a half aileron roll between the metronome stop points. 6 pitch reversals are required, and the model will retain constant tailboom orientation. The roll will be centred at the mid-point of the arc Inverted Pirouetting Figure 8 The inverted pirouetting figure 8 can be performed at any pirouette rate. The model will describe a symmetrical Figure 8 with a consistent rate of rotation Pirouetting Loop The Pirouetting Loop will be positioned symmetrically examples with a constant rate of rotation. Page 4 of 7
5 18 2 Pirouetting Outside Loop The Pirouetting outside loop can be entered from either the top or bottom of the manoeuvre.it will be positioned symmetrically with a constant rate of rotation Pirouetting Metronome The helicopter must metronome back and forth approximately 45 either side of vertical with least 6 pitch reversals and at least one complete pirouette during each traversal. The manoeuvre will be stationary and consistent height, pirouette rate and reversal rate will be maintained Tumbling Circuit The tumbling circuit can be performed with either forward or backward tumbles. The manoeuvre will exhibit accurate positioning and height control with a consistent rate of tumbling Waltzer - Pie-Dish with Multiple Aileron Rolls A pie-dish is a remote circuit flown with the tailboom of the helicopter vertical (or nearvertical), skids in or out. In the Waltzer, the model should perform at least 2 revolutions while continuously aileron-rolling K2 Auto* The K2 auto consists of an autorotational landing beginning with a 360 Aileron Roll, followed by a further half roll to inverted, and ending with a Forward Elevator Flip. The manoeuvre will show consistent height loss, uniform forward speed and land as close as possible to a marker positioned 3m in front of the pilot on the field centreline London Eye A vertical circle in front of the pilot/judges prescribed by a succession of sustained pirouetting metronomes with the full rotor disc at all times visible to the pilot/judges Pirouetting Vertical 8 The helicopter will prescribe a vertical 8 while executing a continuous series of pirouettes, in effect two pirouetting loops, one inside, the other outside Pirouetting Wall of Death The model will be made to prescribe at least two remote knife-edge circles while pirouetting continuously K 2.5 Auto* The K2.5 auto consists of an autorotational landing beginning with a Pirouetting Flip, followed by a 360 Aileron Roll, a further half roll to inverted, and ending with a Forward Elevator Flip. The manoeuvre will show consistent height loss, uniform forward speed and land as close as possible to a marker positioned 3m in front of the pilot on the field centreline Haymaker Backwards horizontal eight, with multiple consecutive 4 point hesitation rolls with knife edge 360 pirouettes at every knife edge, the pirouette direction reversing each time Rainbow* Twister (Bouncy Castle) The Rainbow Twister or Bouncy Castle is a succession of Rainbows alternating nose-up, nose down each with an aileron half-roll in the centre and then a 90 pirouette at the stop point, joined to produce a square circuit. 2 complete circuits will be flown Big Ben - Metronoming Clock Face The model will be held in a sustained metronome directly in front of the judges with its nose vertical, the Judges viewing the rotor disk as a clock face. The model will then be made to rotate yawing clockwise prescribing the 12 points of a clock-face, each point defined by a tick of the metronome. Start and finish of the manoeuvre are the two 12 o clock points Pirouetting Globe This is a succession of Pirouetting Loops, but with the axis of the loop rotating by degrees for each loop until an imaginary globe in the sky has been prescribed. Exit from the manoeuvre should be the same as the point of entry, but with the model moving in the opposite direction. The Manoeuvre will consist of at least 4 loops. In this context, a Rainbow is an arcing Forward or Backward Half-Flip. In this context, an auto is an autorotation with drive disengaged All material copyright 3D Masters D Masters is a registered Trademark Page 5 of 7
6 3DX Competition Rules Booking In and Briefing Competitors must book-in and surrender their transmitters before the start of competition. All Competitors will be asked to show proof of Insurance when booking in at the beginning of the event. Failure to do so will render their entry void. Pilots wishing to fly during a designated Practice Session must book-in first. A mandatory flight briefing for pilots and callers will be held at 30 minutes before start of event. Transmitter Frequencies must be in the FAI International Competition Band to MHz (ch 55 to 90) or approved Spread Spectrum systems Field Rules In all cases of dispute the Judges and Organisers decision is final. All aircraft and equipment must be stored in the designated pits area when not in use. Pilots and Callers will obey Code of Conduct and wear supplied passes and when Airside A Flight Line will be clearly marked. Flight behind this line will result in the round being disqualified. Repeated violation will result in disqualification from the competition. The Competition will operate under the peg-on system, whereby the transmitter may only be switched on when the designated frequency peg is handed to the competitor by the organisers. Under no circumstances may a transmitter be switched on or an engine run without the appropriate peg being attached to the transmitter, ANYWHERE ON SITE AT ALL TIMES THROUGHOUT THE EVENT A Starting Box and a Flying box will be available to competitors. When a competitor s turn is called he will enter the Starting Box with his Caller and start his engine. On clearance of the Flying Box by the previous competitor, the next competitor will be beckoned to the Flying Box, where he will await clearance from the Flightline Director before beginning his flight. The Caller is responsible for calling Set Manoeuvres, for making the Competitor aware of the progress of time through all his flights and to act as an extra pair of eyes in avoiding danger. Once a flight has started, Judging will begin and NO re-fly will be allowed. After his flight, the Competitor must clear his equipment and return his transmitter to Tx control immediately. When not flying, Competitors must not distract other Competitors, nor obscure the view of Spectators. Safety Members of the Public will be in attendance at 3D Championship 2007 competition, and so Safety must be given utmost priority. Competitors should acquaint themselves with the Safety Guidelines issued by the National Governing Body. Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in disqualification. Pilots MUST land their aircraft after substantial contact with the ground or other object likely to cause damage. Freestyle 3 minutes are allocated for each Competitor to show their overall Freestyle Flying ability. Judges are looking for a. Content. b. Smoothness. c. Planned structure. d. Personal flying style Props and Pyrotechnics used to augment the flight must be safe and no solid object may leave the aircraft during flight. Background music to be used during the flight (optional) must be supplied to the Organisers by one month before competition. Competitors have an overall 5 minutes in which to enter the flight box, complete their schedule and leave the flight box. Set Manoeuvres Entrants are required to select 5 manoeuvres from the set 30 manoeuvres. Entrants must fly their chosen manoeuvres in the order indicated on their entry forms and have an overall 5 minutes to complete their schedule and leave the flight box. Callers must clearly indicate the name of each manoeuvre, it s beginning and it s end. Each manoeuvre is marked out of a perfect 10, and then that score is multiplied by the allocated k factor for the manoeuvre. The height at which manoeuvres are flown is at the discretion of the Pilot. The Judges will however take height into consideration in their marking. Page 6 of 7
7 Organisation Classes will be determined from received entry forms, and will be published before the event. The Set Manoeuvres round will take place first, followed by Freestyle rounds, then the final fly-offs. The order of flying will be randomly allocated beforehand and published on the morning of the event. The order of flying will be reversed for Freestyle. Top pilots in each class will determine final positions in a fly-off of Set Manoeuvres and Freestyle with all prior scores being zeroed. Scores Appeals Each judge will have up to 10 points to allocate for each Set Manoeuvre, which will then be multiplied by the k factor for that manoeuvre. Each Judge will have up to 100 points to award for the Freestyle Flight Each entrant s score will be the total of the Set Manoeuvres score and the Freestyle score. Scores will be published at the end of each round and at the end of the competition. They will also appear on the website and as soon as practicable. Entrants may apply after the event for copies of their scoresheets to be supplied in Excel spreadsheet format. Appeals must be lodged and recorded within 15 minutes of an alleged incident, and will be dealt with as soon as practicable. In all cases the decision of the Judges and the Contest Director is final. Communications Communications leading up to the event will normally be by . It is very important that s are answered promptly and accurately.
