HENDERSONS EDUCATIONAL SERVICES Welcome to Hendersons Educational Services. Since 1990, we have been helping higher achieving students perform at their best and assisting them on their path to success. We are specialists in preparing students for exams and have delivered consistently superior results for our clients over the last twenty-eight years. We look forward to sharing our knowledge, resources and passion for excellence in education with your family. All Hendersons teaching staff are experienced and highly qualified teachers. They are carefully selected to ensure our philosophy and exemplary teaching standards are maintained. Our programs are conducted over a limited period of time as we believe that students will retain the information better and be more able to build on what they have learnt. The groups are made up of like-minded students so that the sessions flow and cater to their specific needs. The content and approach of our workshops and practice exams are based on the types of papers found in the actual exams your child will be sitting. This book is relevant for students who are sitting an exam when they are in Year 8 and Year 9. 2

SCHOLARSHIP POTENTIAL Does your child have the potential to achieve a scholarship? School feedback Your child s teachers have probably made comments like: is an eager reader, provides very alert, rapid answers to questions, has a wide range of interests, displays a great curiosity, especially for new things, uses a lot of commonsense, has an interest in cause-effect relationships, has higher than usual powers of concentration. NAPLAN results Another indicator will be your child s NAPLAN results. KEY Indivdual student result National Average Reading Numeracy Band 9 Band 9 Band 8 Band 8 Band 7 Band 7 Band 6 Band 6 Band 5 Band 5 Band 4 Band 4 Students who are suitable for our workshops will generally score in the top triangle (top 5% of Victorian students) or in Band 8 (the next 10% of Victorian students) in Reading and Numeracy. These basic skills need to be at a very high standard when considering workshops for competitive exams. Educational Assessment by Hendersons If you are uncertain whether your child should sit a scholarship or entrance exam, then an individual Educational Assessment will assist in providing you with clarity. They take three hours, including up to fifteen minutes feedback and cost $300. Please refer to our Information Booklet, our website or call the office on for more information. 3

SELECTIVE ENTRY ACADEMIC SCHOOLS Selective entry academic high schools provide an educationally enriched environment for academically gifted students who are also high achievers. There are four selective entry academic high schools in Victoria for students in Years 9 to 12: Mac.Robertson Girls High (taking 225 girls) Melbourne High (taking between 308 and 336 boys). Nossal High School, situated in Berwick (taking 200). Suzanne Cory High School will be situated in Werribee (taking 200). The Education Department uses a centralised selection process to admit students to all selective entry schools for the 2019 school year. The common entrance examination will be undertaken by eligible students in the middle of June Eligible students are those who are in their second year of secondary school at government or non-government schools (usually Year 8), who are either Australian citizens or who have permanent resident status or an appropriate visa. When enrolling, you need to indicate your choice of schools, in order of preference. Students who sit the common entrance examination are ranked according to their aggregate score. To be considered for selection a student must reach an acceptable standard in all sections of the entrance examination. Currently 85% of the Year 9 enrolments are selected through the examination process described above with no further information or interview required. 10% of places are allocated according to rank, score and equity considerations. Details of what is an equity consideration may be obtained from the Department of Education then choose: schools; for parents; secondary school; choosing a secondary school; selective entry high schools; how to apply; eligibility to sit the examination. The remaining 5% are selected through a Principal s discretionary selection category. They are asked to write a letter and present a portfolio of achievements. Subsequently, some of these students are invited for an interview. THE 5% RULE The maximum number of students admitted to the four schools from any one school must not exceed 5% of that contributing school s Year 8 enrolment. If there are 200 students in Year 8 at a school, then no more than a total of ten students may be selected. SPECIALIST SCHOOLS There are four specialist schools in Victoria: John Monash Science School (Science, Maths and associated technologies) Years 10 to 12. An entrance examination is held in June for Year 9 students seeking one of the 200 Year 10 places and for Year 10 students seeking one of the 20 Year 11 places. Maribyrnong College (Sports) Years 7 to 12. Admission is through a detailed application form, references, school reports and interviews. Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (Dancers and Musicians) Years 7 to 12. Admission is through auditions and interviews. Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences. Years 11 and 12. Admission is through an entrance exam in mid Year 10 (or Year 11) and an interview. 4

SCHOLARSHIP FMATS There are three main companies that write the papers for the various exams on behalf of the schools. ACER Australian Council for Educational Research AAS Academic Assessment Services and EDUTEST Below is an example of the schools for which ACER, AAS and Edutest wrote exams in 2017 for students at these levels. NOTE: You must find out the examining body. Schools may change from year to year. Historical data displayed is for information purposes only. The Hendersons workshops that we recommend are dependent on the schools that your child is trying to gain entry or a scholarship to, hence the company who writes the test on their behalf is an important piece of information. 8 TYPES OF WKSHOPS OFFERED Creative Writing Our emphasis here is on the structure of an essay, the use of expressive language and the way to respond to an illustration or other prompts. Analytical Writing (we cover topics which could be analytical, discussion, informative, persuasive or procedure) Our emphasis here is on the organisation of this type of essay, the use of effective language and the way to express a point of view or an argument. Writing for Science This programme looks at the main styles of writing about Science which have been used in tests in the last ten years. Writing to persuade, analyse or inform about a scientific area of interest as well as to interpret and write about experiments. Mathematics We focus on Maths problem solving and exam technique. These workshops are not about training in the basic processes of Mathematics. Students entering for Scholarships or entry to selective school, should already be proficient at Maths. There are two stages in solving any problem. Analysis What is this problem really about? What data does the question have which may help solve it? Strategies The skills that will help to solve the problem. Reading Comprehension A one-day course to teach students the skills of inferential reading, as well as how to interpret maps, diagrams, charts and illustrations. Verbal Reasoning A one-day course to explore with the students the skills required to see relationships and solve problems using words and language. These tests include verbal analogies, synonyms, antonyms and logical reasoning. Numerical Reasoning A one-day course to explore with the students the skills needed to see relationships and solve problems using numbers. These tests include missing numbers, worded problems and logical reasoning. Science Reasoning A half-day course to look at examples of questions so as to increase confidence in this style of reasoning. Abstract Reasoning A half-day course to teach our techniques on how to attack and solve these puzzle type papers. Practice Exams Are fundamental to our program. Every practice exam comes with a complete performance analysis with a detailed explanation for every answer. We provide you with the most authentic testing experience outside of the actual exam. 7

WT COURSES YOUR CHILD SHOULD DO Our courses are specifically designed to teach exam techniques to able students. We aim to help by: ~ filling the gaps in their experience, ~ developing different ways of thinking, ~ improving their confidence, ~ giving them the opportunity to enjoy a challenging educational experience, ~ encouraging responsibility for their own learning as part of a lifetime development. To fully prepare for scholarship exams we recommend that you undertake the following: Melbourne High, Mac.Rob Girls, Nossal High and Cory High Creative Writing Analytical Writing Reading Comprehension Mathematics Verbal Reasoning Numerical Reasoning * At least one Practice Exam ACER (CSTP or SST Level 2) Creative Writing Analytical Writing Reading Comprehension Mathematics Science * At least one Practice Exam John Monash Science School (JMSS) Writing for Science Reading Comprehension Mathematics Science Numerical Reasoning * At least one Practice Exam Academic Assessment Services (AAS) Creative Writing Analytical Writing Verbal Reasoning Numerical Reasoning Abstract Reasoning Reading Comprehension Mathematics * At least one Practice Exam Edutest Creative Writing Mathematics Reading Comprehension Verbal Reasoning Numerical Reasoning * At least one Practice Exam Scotch College Creative Writing Analytical Writing Reading Comprehension Mathematics Verbal Reasoning * At least one Practice Exam MATERIALS: We do not supply or sell our materials under any circumstances. Students who are absent from a session will not receive the material. 8

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS When do I need to pay? You must pay for the first session or any bookings for the current month at the time of booking. We do offer a $20 discount for all bulk payments of each $500. Otherwise, fees are payable on the 1st of the month in which the workshop is scheduled. Many other companies offer longer programmes. Does Hendersons? Yes. Our English classes are called Writing Beyond Primary School/ You Pull The Strings and our Maths is called Intro to Problem Solving. See page 41 for more information on these courses. Why are there half days and full days? For students of this age we find that after two or three hours of concentration, teaching and learning becomes less effective. Reading Comprehension is only available as a whole day because the momentum of discussion would be lost if interrupted. My child is an avid reader, does he/she need to do Reading Comprehension? That s great. It is an imperative component as it will have definitely helped with their vocabulary. Our workshop develops those existing skills and teaches techniques to infer answers from text, maps, diagrams, charts and illustrations. Why do you do workshops by groups? Because it works. Bright children like to interact with and will learn from others of a similar intellectual level. Will doing the workshops get my child a scholarship or a place? We believe that what we offer will greatly aid the successful attainment of a scholarship or placement interview. Remember that the best actor did not always get the role on the first attempt. What if my child is sick or cannot attend? We will endeavour to arrange a replacement date for any absences. As Saturdays and Sundays are generally fully booked, you will be placed on a waiting list for the other groups. Please note that a cancellation charge may be applicable. What feedback do the parents get? Parents are given group feedback by the teacher after the end of the workshop or exam. Parents are required to be in the classroom for the last fifteen minutes of each session. Eg pm for 12.30pm finish. What are the workshop times? Whole day 9:15 am to 3:30 pm Half Day (AM) 9:00 am to 12:30 pm Half Day (PM) 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm A six session Maths class is for 2 1/2 hours from 8:15am, 9:45am, 11:15am, 1:15pm or 2:30pm. Lunch and morning tea are provided for whole days. Morning or afternoon tea is provided for 2 1/2 hour or half day workshops. What are the office hours? Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm (school holidays) On Saturday and Sundays, the staff will be able to assist in taking payments. As we are extremely busy on the weekends, we ask that you contact the office from Monday to Friday with any queries. You can us at any time at info@hendersons.com.au Can I just do one workshop? Yes, though we do recommend all workshops be undertaken for your child to be fully prepared. If you were to do just one thing, then it should be a Practice Exam. What is your track record? We have had a consistent percentage of our students winning scholarship interviews. Over the last several years, we have had more than half of our students, each year, achieve their goal of a scholarship or entry to a selective school. 9

MATHEMATICS Four or six half days Our Maths courses are focused on problem solving and exam technique. These workshops are not about training in the basic process of Mathematics. We offer two different schedules for completing our Maths workshop. Both courses are the same number of hours and the same content is covered. 4 session schedule - 4 sessions of 3.5 hours each. 6 session schedule - 6 sessions of 2.5 hours each. The 6 session schedule allows the students to absorb and consolidate the material presented over a longer time frame which may be suitable for students who find Maths concepts more challenging. Families should choose the best option after receiving the results of the Maths pre-test. PRE-TESTING $ 60 $60 fully refunded if the child is enrolled in the Maths workshop after this date. All students will be tested prior to commencing these workshops to ensure they are at a proficient level in order to gain value from our courses. Parents are required to stay during the session, as an explanation will be given regarding the test results while the testing is happening. Results and group feedback will be available immediately after the session. You must select and attend a Maths pre-test date before the first date of your selected Maths workshop.
