2 The Academy s Focus The Berwick College Sports Academy is aimed at providing an integrated academic pathway driven by young students sporting aspirations. This elite program allows young student athletes to enhance and develop their sporting talent while concurrently receiving their secondary education. It is crucial to the Academy that students academic pursuits are of the highest priority and that each student s interest and aspiration in sport assists them in achieving high results both academically and athletically.

3 The Academy is committed to: Providing strong pastoral care for all students Constant monitoring of academic performance and achievements Providing a unique high quality specialised sports program, allowing students to reach their full potential in their selected sport. Creating skills within the Academy s students to provide unique opportunities aimed at future employment.

4 Curriculum: In 2015 and ahead the basketball program will give students the opportunity to follow their passion whilst undertaking a heavily monitored and well rounded academic program. For Year 7 and 8 students training sessions will occur during their weekly Sport Education allotted time and an extra session as a period 0 (8:00am to 8:50am), however, the students would still be involved in their general Physical Education classes. Students will also be given the option to take on skill based sessions every lunchtime. 5 Development Group The Development Group will not have any designated training time in the normal school day timetable, however, they will have a period 0 training session and be involved in the tournaments. 6 Year 9 Curriculum Outline All year elective (limited places, try outs maybe required) The Year 9 program will have four weekly periods. Two of these periods will be dedicated to training and learning the structures the students will apply at our various tournaments. The other two periods will vary between training sessions and more theoretical sessions. These will include: Game tactics Nutrition Strength and conditioning Refereeing qualification Game analysis Understanding muscular power and training to improve this fitness component

9 Basketball Academy American Tour Proposal The Basketball Academy has already proven to be a huge success and to continue to improve what the program offers we are looking at including an American Tour, which would complete the student s Year 10 and 11 program perfectly. A tour such as this will provide our students with a unique opportunity to experience basketball at its true home. Outline Tour to be ran for our Year 10 and 11 students, enabling them to compete against Junior Varsity teams in American High Schools. Tour to run with approximately 30 students. We plan to hold our first tour with our Year 10 and 11 group completing the program in 2016.

14 Academy Coaches Chris Pentland Gerard Leonard The 2014 Academy Captains, Principal (Kerri Bolch) and Academy coaches after our successful Academy Challenge against Albert Park Former Melbourne Tigers NBL Championship Player and current SEABL player for Kilsyth Shannan Davey Current BigV player for Southern Peninsula Sharks

15 This year the Academy also has two external coaches: Clare Papavs Clare is a current VJBL coach with the Dandenong Rangers U14-1 side and has a vast knowledge of the game and experience coaching at the junior level. She has played in the WNBL for the Dandenong Rangers and is a current SEABL player for Dandenong in Clare joins us for our Monday sessions and at tournament days. Daequon Montreal DQ is a current USA import for the Dandenong Rangers SEABL side. He is a college graduate at Division 1 school in the USA Boise State. He has played in the NBL as an import player for the Adelaide 36ers and is one of the top imports in the SEABL. DQ is also an personal coach for young aspiring juniors around the Dandenong area and runs his own holiday program at Dandenong stadium. DQ assists us for our Tuesday and Thursday sessions and tournament days.

17 Costing 2015 Academy Squad: $350 Development Squad: $250 This includes a Berwick College uniform, all tournament fees and the expert coaching. We have been able to keep our costing to a minimum as our program is predominantly run by qualified teachers with basketball expertise. Costing's may change in the future especially in the Year 9/10 program as students gain extra qualifications such as Refereeing and Coaching accreditation.

18 Enrolment Process Late Term 2 try outs held at the school Application Forms will be due May 15th to Berwick College s front office We are hopeful ALL students trying out for the academy will be accepted into the program. The program will be levelled, so each participating student is receiving coaching to their current abilities.
