Ergonomics Overview
Ergonomics Ergonomics: The science and practice of designing jobs and workplaces to match the capabilities and limitations of the human body. Ergonomic Principles Work activities should permit employees to adopt several different healthy and safe postures. Muscle forces should be done by the largest appropriate muscle groups available. Work activities should be performed with joints at about mid-point of their range of motion. 9 DIOSH Day Janelle Haines, John Deere February 2018
Basic Ergonomic Risk Factors 10 DIOSH Day Janelle Haines, John Deere February 2018
Ergonomic Injury Also called Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) Associated with the soft tissues Muscles Ligaments Tendons Nerves Cumulative strains and sprains Not a result of a slip, trip, fall, or one-time overexertions. 11 DIOSH Day Janelle Haines, John Deere February 2018
Ergonomic Analysis
Ergonomic Analysis Step 1: Observation Data collection (tools used, forces, exposure, etc.) 13 DIOSH Day Janelle Haines, John Deere February 2018
Ergonomic Analysis Step 2: Data Analysis How is the employee effected by workcenter conditions? 14 DIOSH Day Janelle Haines, John Deere February 2018
Ergonomic Analysis Step 3: Ergonomic Recommendations What can be done to prevent injury? Simple solutions to improve body positions 15 DIOSH Day Janelle Haines, John Deere February 2018
Virtual Reality and Ergonomics
VR for Manufacturing Utilize when solutions can t be obtained with simpler analysis methods Utilize to analyze costly tooling Use to get buy-in from Safety, Facilities, Assemblers, Welders, Engineers, Management 17 DIOSH Day Janelle Haines, John Deere February 2018
