3 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF SKATE CANADA The season marks the end of our Olympic quadrennial and was undoubtedly one of the most successful seasons in the past decade, with technological advancements, organizational growth, and all levels of Skate Canada coming together to support programming from the grassroots levels to the Olympic podium. At the conclusion of the quadrennial, the primary measure of our strategic objective in the area of performance was to earn three medals at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, an aggressive goal which we proudly exceeded. The 2018 Olympic Winter Games brought sport into the global spotlight, with the figure skating competition, and Canadian skaters, as a focal point. Skate Canada topped the global medal count as Team Canada s figure skaters earned a best-ever four medals, a significant contribution to Canada s highest medal count (29) in the history of the Olympic Winter Games. Our Canadian skaters proved their all-around prowess dominating the team event to win Skate Canada s first gold medal. In their individual discipline, Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford earned a hard-fought third place finish in pairs, while in the ladies event, Kaetlyn Osmond established her poise, elegance, and incredible skills and deservingly also captured an Olympic bronze. Meagan, Eric, and Kaetlyn marked this accomplishment completing their trifecta of Olympic medals. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir cemented their skating legacy, becoming the most decorated Olympic figure skaters in history with five medals (three gold, two silver) in three Olympic Winter Games. Tessa and Scott s double-gold performance in PyeongChang captured the hearts of the nation and beyond, with their free dance becoming the most-watched moment of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Canada, as 5.7 million Canadians tuned in. The PyeongChang Games were lived out on social media, where spikes were seen on all platforms. Fan engagement with Skate Canada posts increased 901% from the monthly average of the preceding 12 months. Skate Canada rolled out fresh, engaging content at all hours of the day, posting 929 messages throughout the Games. These initiatives resulted in 13,303,000 impressions, spreading our stories of success across the world instantaneously. All our athletes social media accounts saw increases in engagement and impressions, bolstering their individual and Skate Canada brands. Our Canadian medallists immediately trended in Canada following their performances, with Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir holding four of the top ten trending topics after their free dance. Traditional print media gave our athletes stories a circulation of 1,063,639,446 for fans across the world to enjoy. Skate Canada Annual Report

4 From a program perspective, NextGen continued to deliver results at the junior and novice levels, providing necessary experience to our future Olympic and world hopefuls. These athletes won six ISU Junior Grand Prix medals, six junior international medals, 10 novice international medals and two junior synchronized international medals. In addition, our senior athletes earned 26 medals in international competition, including Kaetlyn Osmond s world title and Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje s third world medal. Domestically, Skate Canada in partnership with local organizing committees and sections proudly delivered top-of-class events to our fans across the country. The 2018 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships saw fans come out in masses, with ticket revenues breaking records dating back over 12 years. On the ice, our athletes produced memorable performances as Patrick Chan s gold medal win moved him into the sole possession of the Canadian record for number of men s national titles (10), Gabrielle Daleman won her second Canadian title, Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford claimed their seventh consecutive pairs title, and Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir stood atop the Canadian podium for the eighth time. At the 2018 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships, Nexxice senior won their second consecutive Canadian title, their 11 th in the past 12 years. Organizationally we are stronger as well. Our financial objective for 2018 was to accumulate revenue of $16.5 million, which we have surpassed by $0.7 million. Our governance model is working as we strive to continually move Skate Canada forward following the principles of participation, accountability, transparency, responsiveness, fairness, and inclusivity. At the grassroots level, the roll-out of the new STAR program to clubs, schools, coaches and officials has successfully been accomplished, resulting in the further development of skaters across the nation. Throughout the duration of this quadrennial, Skate Canada coaches taught 768,825 Canadians to skate, reaching communities across the country. The skating development video library was launched on YouTube and has already compiled thousands of views. Along with the Skate Canada e-learning site and new Skate Canada Connections social media pages, coaches, club and school executives and administrators now have more resources than ever to administer top-quality professional programing. These many achievements and how we attain them would not be possible without the incredible contributions of our diverse and engaged membership. As we embark upon the first year of the next Olympic quadrennial, we look to carry forward the wonderful legacy of this season on to the season. We aspire to continue to see inspired Canadians embrace the joy of skating through involvement in Skate Canada programs and events. 23 SAFE SPORT Sport organizations across the world are entrusted by parents for the safety and well-being of their children. One of the primary reasons children join youth sports is to have fun. It is the role of all adults connected with youth sport, from coaches to parents, officials to team leaders and board members to administrators, to ensure that a fun and safe environment is created, where the children thrive, succeed and want to stay engaged in youth sport. Currently 7 out of 10 adolescents leave youth sport, most often stating it is no longer fun. Our goal as a youth sport organization is to encourage our children to be engaged in sport for life. The cases such as Larry Nassar and other high-profile cases, underscore our responsibility to ensure we are doing absolutely everything we can to protect children in our system. In almost every case where a coach has abused an athlete, others knew something was up, but were unaware how to approach the situation or what to do. Coaches are huge influences on the lives of our children. Depending on a child s home life, a coach may be the only trusted adult in the life of a child. That weekly trip to the arena, may be the only refuge a child has from a traumatic home life, and the coach may be the difference in the life of a child in terms of recognizing that the child is in distress and needs help. Providing coaches with education on these critical issues, will make them a better coach, better person, and will assist them in recognizing when a child may be at risk. It will also help a coach to be prepared in the event of a disclosure from a child. These are difficult issues, and Respect in Sport training helps coaches by providing them with important knowledge and tools. With over 500,000 coaches currently certified in Respect in Sport across a wide-range of sports in Canada, Skate Canada has taken a greater stand of putting the safety and well-being of our athletes first. In addition to offering this education to all our coaches, officials and team leaders we have extended this training to all our Skate Canada club board members and skating school administrators. This is a great benefit to the roles and responsibilities of the club board members and skating school administrators. Respect in Sport helps provide others around the situation with tools to address the situation, and not ignore it. Respect in Sport is designed to provide good people with practical tools to be better leaders. Skate Canada Annual Report

While there is no permanent home for the Hall of Fame, the archives at the Skate Canada National Service Centre house many different historical artifacts, some of which are on display. The Skate Canada archives were created to collect, preserve, study and interpret archival materials that are historically significant to figure skating in Canada. More than 10,000 photographs, 8,000 videotapes, as well as trophies, plaques, textual materials, medals, pins and skates comprise the current collection.
