BOX 875-1, KIMBERLING CITY, MO (417) dmj@tri-lakes.net CLUB WEB SITE VOLUME 7 ISSUE 3 MARCH MEETING MARCH14, 7:00 PM Branson Community Center. Program Our Program Director needs your help so bring your current project for SHOW & TELL to help him out. TRI-LAKES R/C FLYING CLUB PRESIDENT JOHN WOODS VICE-PRESIDENT DON LIVERMORE SECRETARY & EDITOR DON JOHNSON TREASURER ROSCOE FUDGE SAFETY OFFICER ERV ROHDE FIELD MARSHALL HOWARD SHIRE INSTRUCTORS ROSCOE FUDGE MIKE KING DON LIVERMORE ERV ROHDE CHRIS RUST JIM STUART JOHN WOODS MARCH 17TH APRIL 2ND DAYLIGHT SAVINGS MARCH 2000 THE PRESIDENT S CORNER Not much rain or snow but the wind has been very uncooperative anytime I've been at the field. I know many of you have experienced the same thing. Your plane flies upwind somewhat like a seagull with the jidders and downwind approaching supersonic speeds. Landings are really exciting especially if its a cross wind, FUN - FUN - FUN. If you missed the last meeting we now have an Internet Website thanks to Dave & Karen Nelson. People visiting Branson interested in R/C can locate our Club at We will be adding pictures and additional information as time permits. We will be linked to the hobby shops so people visiting their web site can see that there is an R/C Club in Branson. Of course if anyone wishes to fly as a guest at our field, they should be accompanied by a member and be a current AMA member. Last week I mailed the 2000 lease document to Mr. and Mrs. Oswald along with the lease payment. We will continue to keep them on our Newsletter mailing list so they will be aware of how our Club is doing. Well I hope to see you all at the flying field and hope the wind settles down this next month -- Happy Landings. John 1

TRI - LAKES R/C FLYING CLUB MEETING MINUTES FEBRUARY 8, 2000 President John Woods opened the meeting at 7:06 p.m. at the Branson Community Center. All officers were present and there were 20 members present. The minutes from the January meeting were approved as written in the February Newsletter. Treasurer Roscoe Fudge reported a balance of $1, in the treasury. The 50/50 raffle was won by Herman Hanebrink and he received 1/2 of $19.00 Committee Reports: All members of the Event Committee were absent. Announcements and Old Business: President John Woods showed the picture from the Stone County Gazette of him giving the stuffed animals, donated by the Club, to Skaggs Hospital to be used for kids that were in the hospital over the holidays. Del D Alesandro will take this and show it to the Branson Community Center staff for a little Club P.R. John also said the Flight Simulator is working and the computer has a working Mouse so you can make proper aircraft selections. He also announced that Virgil Moon had taken off by himself the previous Saturday. Combat Coordinator Ray Dixson ask for a list of combat pilots so he can make a roster and arrange in flight groups of four or less. Note: Official Combat flights will be with Battle Floyds using a bushed.15 engine. New Business: Roscoe Fudge suggested that the Field shed be locked with a combination lock rather than a key lock so all members could use the Flight Simulator. A motion was made and passed to do this and Roscoe will get it done. The combination will be He also said he had put the wood casing around the door. It was also asked if anyone had an electric heater that they could donate to the Club. John Woods is going to contact Gerald Coffelt about the bicycle, truck bumper and tire by the Field shed. He thinks these items probably belong to Cliff Coffelt. Dave Nelson announced that the Club now has a free Web Page thanks to a lot of work by Dave s wife Karen. As a free web site it has a little advertising on the top but check it out it s pretty neat. The site is rcclub. Howard Shire asked when we should treat the field again with Diazinon? It was suggested that we wait until the bugs get active, probably sometime in March. Program: President John Woods had a bunch of tips for the group. When you have decals on your plane that may eventually peel back, spray them with Pactra Clear Polyurethane to prevent air or fuel from getting under the decal. He showed a polish for polishing MonoKote - after you get all the oil off. He had some beverage holders (for aluminum cans) that he had cut into ¾ rings. If you put your wheels into these rings the plane will not move around in your vehicle when you drive to and from the Field. He also showed how to make gapless ailerons. Take a piece of MonoKote as long as the aileron, fold in half lengthwise with the adhesive side out. With the plane upside down drop it into the gap between the wing and aileron. Also drop in a straight piece of 3/32 music wire cut to the same length as the aileron. Now with the aileron gap fully open, iron the MonoKote to the inside edges of the wing and aileron the wire will hold the film in place until you have it firmly attached the full length. Then drop the wire out and seal the bottom of the gap. Done! **** Roscoe Fudge had a Tower Hobbies Slow Poke 40 trimmed in red and aluminum with a.52 four stroke Magnum engine. The wing area is 1070 sq. in. with about an 18 inch cord. Roscoe says it flys well, and slow and was a good kit to build. It only cost $69. **** Ray Dixson showed a Hobbico Extra 300 ARF with.91 he obtained from Don Livermore. Good looking airplane. Ray also had a Sig Something Extra trimmed in red, white and purple with a Thunder Tiger.46. He got this plane at the Kansas City Swap Meet. The Kit (MEETING MINUTES Continued on page 6) 2

THE EDITOR S NOTEPAD It has been a short winter and now the weather seems to be turning into great flying weather so charge up the batteries, do a good safety check of all your planes and head out to the field. Another thing to do, if you haven t already done so, is pay your 2000 Club Dues. The Club has to have its renewal papers into AMA on April 1st which includes a list of members who have not paid their 2000 dues. So if you want to be a Club member, fly at Rocky Top Field, get a discount at T.P.A. and continue to receive the Club Newsletter you need to give Roscoe your money. If you don t remember if you paid your 2000 dues or if you re getting a free student membership, check the list in the column to the right. If your name is in the list you are a current member. If it isn t there you forgot to pay your dues! Students can receive free Club membership if they are a current AMA member. So if your name is not listed in the column to the right you need to show your 2000 AMA card to Roscoe Fudge or Don Johnson in order to continue your Club membership. The Club roster is in good shape this year with 39 members current in their 2000 dues. At this same time last year we had only 27 members that were current. We ended 1999 with 56 members which we should easily exceed in As noted in John Woods column the Club now has a Web Page. Many thanks to Karen and Dave Nelson for their efforts in making this possible. If you forget the web address it will appear as the last line of the Newsletter header. Just got the Flyer for SMALL This is the Small Model Airplane Lovers League event held in Maumelle, AR each year. The only restrictions are no engines over.26 cu. in. and you must be a current AMA member. It is mostly RC but does include control line and free flight. Motors can be glo, electric, CO2, air, rocket, rubber, catapult or other. This year they are even going to have indoor flying on Friday night. This is a low key fun event and only three hours away. So put June 2nd, 3rd and 4th on your calendar and head to Maumelle. Another fun event is the Springfield BlackSheep s annual Float Fly. This year it is scheduled for August 19th and 20th, with a practice on August 6th. Since our Club does not seem to schedule many float fly events this is an opportunity to put some air time on your old float planes. If you don t have a float plane you still have plenty of time to build one - or buy one from someone else DUES ARE PAST DUE If you are a member of the TRI-LAKES R/ C FLYING CLUB and have not paid your 2000 dues you need to pay them on or before the March meeting. After that date all non paid members will be dropped from the Club Roster. This means notification to AMA that you are no longer a Club member, loss of flying privileges at the Club Field, loss of discount privileges at T.P.A. Hobby Center and stoppage of the Club Newsletter. If you want to continue your membership and can not be at the March meeting send your check to: Roscoe Fudge P.O. Box 854 Branson, MO Dues for Full Members are $40 per year, Associate Members $10 per year and Student Members free if a current AMA Member. Note to Student Members, to continue your free club membership you must be a current AMA Member (Student rate $1 per year) and show your 2000 AMA card to Roscoe Fudge or Don Johnson. Current 2000 Club Members are K Adams, M Anderson, D Baerwald, R Berthold, B Bryant, D D Alessandro, P Denney, R Dixson, K Dixson(F), R Fudge, J Halbert, H Hanebrink, W Hertel, M Hogan, N Ingenthron(S), S Ingenthron, D Johnson, G Johnson(A), M King, C Krause, E Kreiner, D Livermore, T Mckenzie, G Metzger, S Miller, L Milliron, V Moon, D Nelson, I Pietz(S), B Robson, J Roeger, E Rohde, B Rose, C Rust, H Shire, J Stuart, R Wommack, J Woods, and JC Zalog. If you are not on the above list but feel you should be contact Roscoe Fudge. His phone number is Time to land for this month. 3

TowerHobbies UPROAR.40 By Chris "ACE" Rust Well, when we left off last month I had just completed the left wing panel. I have now completed the plane. I will be test flying it ASAP...Wish me luck!! I framed and glued the right wing panel, framed up the fuse, and then laid out the float design on the foam. Next I installed the push rod tubes, 3 1/4hrs. on airframe and 3/4hrs. on floats. I then epoxied the float bottoms together, and laid out the firewall, 1/4hrs. floats, 1/4hrs. on firewall. I epoxied in the landing gear mount, firewall, and fuel tank bottom to the fuse. Then installed the wheels pants on the landing gear wire 3 3/4hrs. I had to go over to Roscoe Fudge's house to use his building table to join the wing panels as mine has a warp on one end, and I couldn't work around it. At Roscoe s, I joined the wing halves, added the leading edge sheeting, trailing edge sheeting, and sanded all the control surfaces I had already built on his belt sander. I also cut out the foam floats on his band saw, and installed the float mount on the aft part of the fuse 3.0hrs. Finally...Covering! I hinged and covered the tail feathers today 2hrs. A real sign of progress! Its all down hill from here. Next I installed all caps stripping on the wing, framed up the servo openings, and sanded the leading edge of the wing to shape 1.5hrs.. I then installed the wing in the fuse, filled and sanded all the airframe in preparation for covering 1hr. With hopes of flying this coming weekend, I have been really working hard, but I have a lot to go still. I fuel proofed the front of the fuse, hinged the ailerons, covered both wing panels, and mounted the horizontal stab on the fuse while watching the Miss USA show on TV, 4.5hrs. Saturday morning rolled around, and I was still covering! I covered the fuse, installed the motor mounts, put in the servos and push rods, set-up the ailerons and elevator, glued on tail wheel bracket, and then the rudder 4.0 hrs. Well, all the covering is done, and time to install the engine and finish the radio set-up. I set all the control throws, installed the fuel tank, and added the hatches. I then checked the balance both lateral, and C.G. I then did a final check over 4 everything, and declared it flight ready 8.0hrs! Now I have to recharge my radio batteries since I have had them on for so long setting up the controls, so, flying today is out of the question! I hope I haven't put anyone to sleep with all of the little details in this review, I was just really interested in using the building log I downloaded to keep track of the whole process, and wanted to share it with you all. Here are the final numbers: CONSTRUCTION TIME: START: 01/20/00 FINISH: 02/07/00 AIRFRAME: 33.5hrs. ENGINE: 1.5hrs. OTHER: 7.75hrs. TOTAL: 42.75hrs. EXPENSE: AIRFRAME: $90.20 ENGINE: $76.95 RADIO: $ OTHER: $20.00 TOTAL: $ Well, these were the final numbers. I was surprised at the final amount of time I had invested, and also the amount of money. I did go all out, and purchased the new Futaba T6-XAS which drove up the cost. Also, this plane uses 5 servos, so I had to purchase an additional one. All in all, I am very happy with my choices so far, as the engine runs great, and produces enough power at 3/4 throttle to hover the Uproar out of your hand when holding vertical. The radio will do everything you could ever ask for, and a lot more! Its a real improvement over the old 6XA, and I am very happy with it. I will do a mini review of it later. Well, that s about it for the Uproar...I'll let Don Livermore do the flying review part, and then throw in some thoughts about how this engine/airframe combo works together. Happy flying! ACE Next month a review on Roscoe Fudge s Slow Poke!

Well if it isn t Tom Mckenzie during his winter trip to New Zealand! Seems Tom had a bad day at the local flying field which resulted in all those small pieces in the foreground. So being a resourceful (Cheap?) individual what does he do? He goes down to the junkyard and buys an old hollow core door and strips off the door skins to make another fuselage. In a couple of days he has a new fuselage and is ready to fly. Probably took this picture before he put it up in the air again. Tom reports that the plane flew well. Atta way to go Tom, good to have you back in the country! National Newsletter January

FROM SAFETY OFFICER ERV This month is about vibration. Do you have a chip on your propeller, is it balanced? How about the screws/ bolts that hold the engine to the mount, are they tight? Keep in mind that vibration {frequency noise} problems get worse as models and props get bigger. COMING EVENTS Mar 18 - Swap Meet - Boeing Bldg. 33, St. Louis, MO. See Model Aviation Contest Calendar for info. Apr 9 - SWAP MEET - Sleeth Hobby Shop parking lot, Springfield, MO. Host Club Springfield BlackSheep Apr 16 - Spring Combat, Buder Park, St. Louis MO. Jun IMAC Challenge BlackSheep Field, Springfield, MO. (MEETING MINUTES Continued from page 2) sells for $80. **** Curt Krause also had a Hobbico Extra 300 ARF trimmed in red, white, blue and gray. This plane was a little smaller size and a different version from Ray s Extra. **** Jim Halbert showed his Sig 4 star 40 wing that he had altered by making it a D-section with shear web. This added considerable rigidity to the wing. He also showed a jig he had made to hold his hinge cutter. It had an adjustable table so all the hinge slots could be cut exactly on the proper hinge line. **** Don Livermore read the Springfield BlackHawk s 2000 event schedule to the Club. The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 PM From the Events Committee. Fun Flys for year 2000 will be in April, June, August and October. Specific time and dates will be discussed at the March meeting. FOR SALE Lew Hurst is cleaning out his workshop and has 8 or 10 aircraft for sale, mostly in the.40 to.60 size range. Some have motors and some have radios included.
