Staff: Mike Tipton & Rita Billbe Contact: sowbug@northarkansasflyfisher.org Mark Van Patten to Speak on Aquatic Entomology At the February meeting, Mark Van Patten will discuss Aquatic Entomology. This presentation on Aquatic Entomology for Fly Fishers is geared for both the seasoned fly angler and those just getting into the sport. He will delve into the underwater world of the aquatic insects bridging the gap between the real invertebrates and the flies we tie to catch fish of all species. Mark Van Patten hosted a nationally syndicated, weekly PBS Series, The Tying Bench for 13 seasons, producing over 200 episodes. Mark has been heavily involved in the sport for more than 50 years. Basically, it is designed to be a venue for a live auction. Ostensibly we charge for the meal. But in reality, we don t. We hope that the income from the live auction will pay for the Shindig and provide us with additional income for Sowbug. So far, we have been lucky and have always ended up making a profit on the Shindig. The most expensive part of the Shindig is the cost of the meal. In the past we have had it professionally catered. The cost has been between $10 and $12 per meal. This year we will try something a little different. The Bull Shoals Police Auxiliary will cater the meal. It will be a spaghetti dinner and will cost us $8.00 per meal. This approach will bring the cost down for Sowbug and allow another lo- Cont. Pg.2

His experience as a Fisheries Biologist affords him an understanding of aquatic entomology (Fish food) as it relates to the patterns he creates at the tying bench. Mark is a published author, in demand speaker, a life member of the Federation of Fly Fishers and a leader in the cause of cleaning up Missouri rivers and streams. Numerous awards and honors are testament to Mark's skill and passion for the sport. cal philanthropical organization to make a little money! (note, this is still up in the air and needs to be voted on) The sorting of stuff for raffles and auctions proceed apace. We have a lot of good stuff. Club donors have been very generous (we still have room for more!). The local solicitation team has been hard at it. Sowbug attendees will be very pleased with what they have an opportunity to blow their money on. The Sowbug Team meets once a month on the second Tuesday at 1:00 pm at the Baxter County Library. Everyone is invited to attend! February President s Message I have selected Pat Dorsey as our celebrity fly fisherman for Pat is a guide and an expert on tying and fishing tailwater flys. He has written the book Tying and Fishing Tailwater Flys. As it happens the Mid South Fly Fishers have Pat lined up to speak to them a few days after he speaks to us. This gives us a break in that we can split the cost of the airfare with Mid South and one of their members who has a cabin in our area has offered to run him up from Memphis to here. He will stay at my house. So we will save on car rental, airfare, and lodging! More info will follow as the time for the event draws nearer. Steve Blumreich and I have been discussing a scheme to make a video about how to fish Dry Run Creek. This would be a YouTube video aimed at people with kids who might be interested in fishing Dry Run Creek but have never done so. This scheme is pretty blue sky at the moment. If any Fishing Dry Run Creek of you are interested in getting involved, please let me know! Weather Cancellation Policy NAFF Activities or Meeting will be cancelled or postponed when the Mountain Home Public Schools Cancel Classes. Check KTLO radio website for school closing info.

3 Tale Waters Page 3 February Fly of the Month Davy s Top Water Caddis Hook sizes 12 or 14 Body - 2/3 hare ear dubbing natural or olive dyed. You must leave 1/3 for wing and head. Do not crowd out or you will not have enough space. Rib - fine silver or gold mylar. Legs - Two pairs knotted PT set to left and right of fly body. Wing - To extend past hook bend. Bleached or tan elk or deer. I prefer elk. Head - One turn of spun deer hair, clipped to form a small tight head but leaving fine ends to set around the wing. This is a pattern to fish either as a single or in combination with a pupa or emerger. For the single fly use a longish leader of a minimum of 10 ft. l prefer more like 12 as the object is to twitch and move the fly so as to induce fish. In the case of a two fly rig, have the caddis attached to a 5 inch detached dropper at 10ft and the pupa or emerger minimum 24 inches below. Fish the two flies as you would a single. Here again action is imparted to both flies in short movements and pauses. Watch for the takes and you will know well enough! This fly accounted for many fine browns last caddis season. Fly tied by Davy Wotton Fishing Outing to Spring River Feb. 21 The next NAFF fishing outing will be on Thursday, February 21, to the Spring River. We will meet at the McDonalds on the east side of town (near the bowling alley) at 7:00 am to car pool to the Bayou Access of the Spring River. This is a 60 to 90 minute drive. The Bayou Access gives excellent access to the Spring River but is kind of hard to find if you have never been there before. This is a great opportunity to explore a new fishing location. The Spring River is an excellent fishing resource when we have high water on the White. If you wish to sign-up, contact Kevin Boddy at kboddy@centur ylink.net or (870)

4 Page 4 Spring River Report NAFF Tie-In A Success grateful, as the kids in CTO use a lot of flies. Many thanks to our tiers; David Boyer, Dave Cornue, Vern Berry, Kevin Boddy, John Shepp, Mike Enger, Tom Emerick, Fred Stump and Susan Parsons. Water levels are running at 400 cfs, 350 avg, and water clarity has been good. The river is looking great and the smallmouth bass and browns have been hitting. More rain in the forecast may flood the river this week. But hopefully it will not. As always check my blog at springriverfliesandguides.com for the latest updates on river conditions. It has been a very wet season this year and the main river can be difficult to wade. The trout are biting great, just might have to work a little harder to get the fly down. Olive woollies and Y2Ks have been the main producers. On some days we have had some great hatches and a pheasant tail, hares ear, or copper john work great. Make sure and let the fly swing out at the end of the drift with short fast strips back upstream. Tight lines and good luck, Mark Crawford springriverfliesandguides.com The first (annual?) Cross Trail Outfitters benefit tie-in was a big success. Nine tiers volunteered their skills, time and materials; and Dally s Fly Shop volunteered the space. The group of nine gathered on Jan. 22nd and enjoyed a day of interesting and lively conversation while tying for a good cause. They may not have solved the world s problems; but I assure you plenty of fish stories were told- -some even believable. Many different patterns were tied: trout flies (steamers, nymphs, dries and wets); and various flies for warm water species were also created. Pizza and other decadent goodies provided fuel for the event. In addition to the flies tied on the day of the event, some of the tiers brought flies they had already tied. The total number of flies donated to CTO approached 300! At the end of the day Susan ran the flies to Duane Hada, who heads up CTO for the region. Duane was pleasantly surprised and extremely Membership Report Please welcome our newest members, joining last month through the Fly Tying class and at the club meeting. 6 Page 6 Protect the River or Lake -- & Still Have a View Figure 1: View through trees showing river and pasture Living near a stream, river, or lake in the Ozarks provides both rewards and responsibilities. How we care for the land is especially critical due to the karst nature of this region. The fractured limestone rock formations beneath the land becomes sponge-like when we have rain and then the water collects underground in aquifers and reappears not only in well water but in downstream springs and streams. The beautiful setting is indeed a blessing, but responsible stewardship goes hand-in-hand with the blessing. Here are some points to keep in mind, especially relating to trees, native grasses, and native shrubs in a riparian area (the definition of riparian is the interface between Figure 2: Limited grassy area to river land and a river, stream, lake, or other body of water; or the land area adjacent to a body of water where the vegetation and soil are directly affected by the body of water). PRESERVING TREES Views of the water can still be beautiful when filtered through trees or framed by trees. Tree roots help stabilize the bank. To remove a living tree below the high-water mark requires a permit from the Corps of Engineers. Above the high-water mark, the landowner has jurisdiction. Above are photos showing how some area landowners have obtained a view while preserving trees PLANTING TO RESTORE A RIPARIAN BUFFER ZONE The riparian buffer zone near the water would ideally include the vegetation as wide as the stream width itself. A diverse mix of native grasses, shrubs, and trees is recommended to protect streambanks from erosion, filter pollutants and sediment from runoff, slow floodwater, provide wildlife habitat, and enhance recreational use of the water. Technically, the buffer zone may be wider than the actual riparian zone and could be defined as the land interface that influences and/or is influenced by the adjacent water. NATIVE GRASSES: Native warm -season grasses filter sediment from runoff and support wildlife. Their deep roots (much deeper than cool-season grasses such as fescue) prevent erosion and are drought-resistant. Examples are big bluestem, little bluestem, broom sedge bluestem, indiangrass, switchgrass, side oat grama, and eastern gamagrass. Planting these grasses from seed may appear to be more expensive than planting fescue, but since their root system can penetrate to soil depths of 10 feet or more they are far more effective stabilizers/filters and are far less likely to require reseeding, once established. NATIVE SHRUBS AND TREES: Shrubs and trees retain fertilizer nutrients to help prevent algae blooms, buffer pesticides, stabilize banks, and protect livestock and flooding damage. Alder, buttonbush, willows, and elderberry are native shrubs well-suited to riparian zones. Well-adapted native trees include sycamore, dogwood, persimmon, hackberry, ash, sweetgum, sassafras, oaks, hickory, box elder, birch, locust, and wild plum. Figure 3: River cane and birch in buffer zone A TECHNIQUE FOR ROOT- ING TREE CUTTINGS: This technique works for growing native willows and sycamores even in difficult planting situations

7 Page 7 such as rocky slopes. It involves cutting branches during the dormant season into 18-inch lengths and immediately driving them approximately 14 inches into the ground with some bud scars on the portion above ground. Detailed instructions can be found on page 36 of the referenced landowner s guide Living with Land and Water in the Ozarks Living with Land and Water in the Ozarks: A Landowner s Guide to Streamside Living, 48 pages, published by The Upper White River Foundation with support of The Community Foundation of the Ozarks, 2010 Compiled and written by Bruce and Joan Burr Tyers at Dally s Every Friday 1:00 to??? Figure 4: Natural foliage where Cotter Spring Creek flows into White River WORST CASE SCENARIO If erosion along a bank is severe enough, it may require Property and Stream Modifications such as riprap. Such modifications are regulated by Arkansas Game & Fish (AGFC), Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). 8 Page 8 Fly Tying Tip: Parachutes for Small Flys much will wick up the post too far. While still holding the twisted post hit with the UV light (Photo #3). Photo 1. How many of us try wrapping thread up and down a parachute post to form the base and have the thread unwrap on us if we pull too hard? What about trying to tie off the hackle after its wrapped? I have, and it can be aggravating. On small parachute flies (#18 and smaller), Tim Flagler uses UV resin to set the post and finish off the hackle wraps. I have modified his technique a bit and find it much easier and faster than using thread on the post and to tie off the hackle. First, I use a thin amount of posting material, here EP Trigger Point Fibers, bind to hook with a few wraps of thread (Photo #1). Then twist the post and apply a single drop of thin UV resin (Photo #2), Photo 3. Once you have your tail, abdomen, hackle, thorax tied in, whip finish your thread (Photo#4). Photo 4. To wrap the hackle, again use a single drop of UV resin on the stiffened post, wrap your hackle up the post through the resin. As you hold your hackle in the wet resin, again hit it with the UV light (Photo #5), Photo 6. All without the pain of horizontal thread wraps, tying down your hackle and trying to whip finish behind the eye or on the post. Tip: If you have a resin without a brush, put a drop on a Post-it Note and use your bodkin to apply a small drop from the Post-it Note to the post. Easier single handed when you are holding the parachute post with the other hand. David Boyer Photo 2. I used Solarez Bone Dry as it has a very thin brush, but a drop of any thin resin at end of a bodkin will also work. Just be careful as too Photo 5. trim your hackle and you are done (Photo#6)!!

10 Page 10 Fish Like a Ninja One of the legends that surrounds Tenkara is that Japanese Ninja warriors practiced the sport to keep their fighting skills sharp in between battles. Ninjas had to be stealthy as well as fierce. Tenkara fishing in small mountain streams requires patience, perseverance, stealth, accuracy and cat-like reflexes all attributes that a skilled Ninja needs. Even if the warriors did not fish Tenkara, it makes sense that today s angler practices those same skills and attitudes. Tenkara fishing can be a wonderful teacher. If you approach this style of angling, you are forced to put a premium on stealth. Tenkara is not distant fishing with high tech tackle. It s up close and in the face of the fish. You have a 12 -foot rod, 15 feet of line and your arm. That s about 30 feet max. If the stream is narrow and shallow, you may see a fish. Most certainly the fish can see you, hear you and feel you. Trout are ultra-sensitive to changes in their environment. If you, as an angler (predator), disturb its space with your shadow, your movement or your crunching boots, the fish will be gone. Therefore, you must practice stealth. Add these techniques to your bag of tricks when you are hunting wild, nervous fish. 1. Fish upstream or at least across. The trout faces the current and it has less of chance of noticing you if you come from behind. 2. Keep a low profile. Lower yourself by crouching or kneeling, hide behind rocks or brush. If possible, keep some faster, broken water between you and your target fish. 3. Wear muted, natural color clothing. The trout will notice bright colors more easily. Full camouflage probably isn t necessary, but it can t hurt. Try to wear something that is tan or grey like the rocks or something the color of the vegetation. warn the fish. 5. Move slowly. Plan your stream strategy before you start casting. Often it is not even necessary to wade in the stream to reach a potential casting target. If you must wade, don t rush. Avoid: splashing, pushing water by going too fast, grinding your boots in the gravel or clomping on the bank like a horse. The lateral line of the fish and their sense of hearing is amazing. They can feel you and hear you when you move in the water. Stalk like a heron. 6. The eyes of the trout protrude from its head so that it can see in almost a full circle. They can look forward, backward, up or down all at the same time. The movement of your body, your shadow or your rod can certainly spook a wary fish. Practice the art of blending in. 4. Use gear that is matte finish or dull colored. Flashy rods and tools reflect the sunlight and Because of the limited casting

11 Page 11 range of Tenkara, the angler must use stealth to sneak up on target fish. Any good fly fisher factors in terrain, wind, sun position, water flow and then gently positions himself/herself to make the best cast to get the best drift for the fly. There are lots of variables that challenge the angler at every bend of the stream. Perhaps that s the intrigue of fly fishing. * *Stealth and Tenkara skills go hand in hand. These two will bring more fish to your net. You may buy the best rod, tie the perfect fly and have the casting accuracy of a sniper, but without stealth, you will blunder the fish away. Be quiet, be sneaky and fish like a Ninja. More Tyers at Dally s Every Friday 1:00 to??? Dennis Galyardt
