Backlash (Commentary from the Board of Directors) October 9th Cookout At White Tail Farm Elly and Linda Robinson have generously offered use of their White Tail Farm to the Club for the site of the VAC Annual Bar B Que. The event is to be held on Saturday, October 9th (rain date October 10th). Details appear in a special notice elsewhere in this copy of the Angler. A Generous Offer From Capt. Ronnie Sides Capt. Ronnie Sides has offered to donate to the Club $100 of his charter fee for those fishing with him in October. Two dates remain open. Ronnie s specialty is catching little tunny in the Harker s Island area. Please check with Ronnie for details and available dates. Thanks to the good captain for his offer of this generous donation. September Raffle - A G Loomis Spinning Rod Chances to win a G Loomis 6-6 GL 2 spinning rod will be sold during the September Membership meeting. The drawing will also be held during the September meeting. Raffle Tickets will be available at 1 for $5.00 / 3 for $10.00 at the meeting. See Eddy Johnston for ticket purchases before the meeting or during the break. Membership Meeting Programs The featured speaker at the September Membership Meeting will be VAC member and Executive Director of the Recreational Fishing Alliance Jim Donofrio. Jim will review the RFA s efforts at the Federal Level to support the establishment of a Menhaden Management Plan. This plan is desperately needed because the number of menhaden in the Chesapeake Bay is reportedly not adequately supporting the needs of the striped bass population. Members of the Fly Fishers of Virginia and the CCA have been invited to join us for Jim s presentation. The October Membership Meeting will feature Jerry Dorash s presentation of Techniques for Fishing Tackle Maintenance. DGIF Calendars Available At the September Membership Meeting The DGIF Wildlife Calendars will be available at the September Membership Meeting. The Club has nearly sold out of the 400 calendars that were ordered and the calendars will be discounted at the meeting. Bob Brown Casting For 2005 Tournament Suggestions Don t forget to pass along any suggestions you might have for the 2005 schedule of tournaments to Bob Brown. All suggestions will be equally considered. Continued on page 2.

CATCHY COMMENTS by Dennis Cline Lots to talk about this month. Top billing has to be the return of African Pompano to waters off Ocracoke, at least for some of our members. First to cash in were Scott Davis, Fred Cousins and Reggie White with Africans weighing 14-0, 16-0 and 17-0 respectively. This trio also scored on amberjack and barracuda. Fred s 36-0 AJ on 12 plug leads for the species cup. He also released a respectable 29-0 cuda on 12-plug. Elly and Robbie Robinson also got in on the fun about two weeks later. They landed eight Africans between them! Elly got the points with a 17-0 on 6-plug worth 377 points. Robbie got the biggest, with an 18-4 on 8 general. The only other African entries that I can recall during my tenure were five that were caught in They included Elly s short-lived world record 33-0 on 6-general. Elly and Robbie also battled some 20-pound class cudas, and one monster cuda that escaped after a two-hour fight! Scott Davis caught this 14# African with 6 spin The largest snook in the VAC record book was recently landed and released by Dick Stephenson. It was a 29-0 snook that measured 45 inches. Dick caught the fish on 30-general while fishing in Jupiter Inlet, Florida. The fish replaces Bill DuVal s 26-0, caught just last year, on the club s lunker list. At about the same time, Bill was enjoying a memorable trip to Seward, Alaska in search of halibut and ling cod records. The list of potential records Bill showed me was too long to remember! There had to be of them for the group! Bill did enter a new club record Coho salmon on 8-fly that weighed Scott Johnston knocked off three more croaker records on fly in August. All were 2 pounds or more, with the top fish a 2-8 on 4-fly! Scott has now reclaimed all five of the croaker records I stole from him two years ago. He must have been pretty high after that accomplishment. How else can you explain eating a world record flounder a few days later? I always thought Scott read the IGFA bible every night before he went to bed. He must have missed a night or two because a 3-10 on 6-fly flew right under the radar! He does get credit for a club record for that one and for a 1-14 on 4-fly. Dr. Jim Wright has logged the first local billfish release for the year. His white marlin was caught on 30-general at the fingers. He also bagged a club record sheepshead on 30-general at the CBBT. Lynn Spurlin and Bob Shepherd provided the only noteworthy freshwater catches this month. Lynn released a nice 5-12 largemouth on 4-spin while fishing a farm pond. He also tried the James for carp, where he released a 14-0 on 4-general using dough balls. Bob s contribution was a 23-0 flathead on 12 general that capped an action packed day on the James. The August Angler of the Month was Larry Allen. Not for a speckled trout, mind you. Larry s catch was a 3-2 croaker on 2- spin that scored 416 points! Scott Johnston took second with his 2-8 croaker on 4-fly that scored 333 points. Third place honors went to Fred Cousins for his 16-0 African pompano on 12-plug that scored 246 points. Congratulations guys! I think I hear the surf calling. See you next month! 2
