Backlash (Commentary from the Board of Directors) May Membership Meeting How to Trifecta The program for the meeting is a How to Trifecta. Elly and Robbie Robinson will reveal black drum angling secretes. A second angling how to presentation will follow. Finally, Angling Rules Chairman Denny Cline will review his collection of stories about entry card errors in the hope of letting us all learn from these submission errors. Denny will also field questions about rule interpretations, etc. Bobby Cauble and JC Corbin Welcomed As New Members Robert ( Bobby ) K. Cauble, Jr. and Jeff JC Corbin were voted into membership in the Virginia Anglers Club at the May 10th Board of Directors Meeting. Please make yourself known to Bobby and JC if you missed meeting them at the April Membership Meeting. Welcome, Guys. Nice to have you as members. Unpaid Members Dropped From The Club Rolls The Board of Directors reluctantly voted to drop six former club members from the membership roll of the Virginia Anglers Club. With a three-month grace period for dues payment starting on December 1 and a very liberal policy of taking dues outside the grace period, the Board felt that these men have decided not to continue membership in the club. Late dues notices were sent and personal phone contacts were made with each person dropped. If you hear a fishing buddy complain about not receiving his May Angler or having his entry cards returned, please ask that person to call Treasurer Fred Cousins to check on the payment status of that person s dues. Scale Certification Continues at the May Membership Meeting Scale certification will be available at the May Membership Meeting. Please contact Larry Allen directly if you need a special certification made outside of the normal certification schedule. Larry is very anxious to help all members to have their scales checked and certified and will be glad to work with you to schedule same.. Dues Paid for the Club s Membership in Chesapeake Bay Foundation The Board of Directors voted to secure a club membership for the in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The pros and cons of a club membership were discussed. The move of the CBF toward using more science in their programs was a key factor in the vote to enroll the club in the CBF. UKROP S Golden Receipt Points Ya Gotta Ask For Them By May 24th UKROP S Golden Gift points are being documented at each UKROP s Market. They are not being sent out via mail as reported in the last Angler. You have to ask either a cashier or a person at the customer service desk to print down your Golden Gift points receipt. Club Savings Moved To 1st Market Bank CD The has a checking account from which club operating expenses are paid and into which club dues and other income is deposited. Funds not needed for club operation were in a Dean Wittier Money Market Fund. When the charges associated with the fund increased to exceeded the income from the fund, Treasurer Fred Cousins has, with the approval of the Board Of Directors, moved the club s savings to a 1st Market Bank CD. What s Your Read On The Annual Awards Banquet? Inclement weather in January forced us to experience a little different format and venue for our Awards Banquet for the 2004 Angling Year. With this change this year, the leadership of the would like your comments about where to hold the Awards Banquet in Do you feel a change in venue from the Meadowbrook Country Club is in order? Should we have the banquet at the Skilligalee? Did you like the format we found ourselves using this year where we recognized angling achievements at a Monthly Membership Meeting. Does you wife enjoy seeing other wives at the banquet or does she view the passing of the pewter as a major snore? President Lynn Spurlin will devote a few minutes of meeting time in May to exploring the feelings of those present about what the 2006 Banquet should be. Please give the subject a little forethought and let Lynn know how you feel on these questions or pass along any suggestions you might have on venue and on format changes. For the Leadership of the Virginia Anglers Club, John Wetlalufer, Sr. CATCHY COMMENTS by Dennis Cline Locally, freshwater fishing improved a bunch in April, but saltwater action was dismal. Bill Carter found a way around that problem by heading to Goodland, Florida again. His second trip in a month produced several more entries and his first club record. Bill released a 14-0 cravalle jack and a 4-2 yellowtail snapper on 12 general to go with his club record 2-1 pompano that was caught on 8 general. Louis Adams fished with Bill and released a nice tarpon on 30 general. On the return to Richmond, Bill released a 1-12 hickory shad on 4-spin to wrap up the tenth fish needed for his Angler Rating! His list of species includes tarpon caught last year in addition to snook, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel, spotted seatrout, and red drum. Congratulations to Bill and Louis!! tapered off, some excellent American shad numbers came in behind them. The top hickory entry came from Glenn Carter, with a 2-1 on 2-fly. Other members entering hickories were Vic Skakandy, Eddy and Nelson Johnston and Bill Carter. Several of these same members also cashed in on the white perch as they made the spring run up the James. The top perch so far is Eddy Johnston s 1-0 on 4-fly with Robbie Robinson s 1-0 on 2-spin close behind! The Nottoway produced some nice American shad in April. Robbie Robinson landed several whites to 3-8 fishing the Peters Bridge area from the bank after his morning turkey hunts. Dennis Cline fished the same area from a boat and managed a 3-8 on 2-fly and a 4-8 on 2 general. Recent rains have the river level up, but fishing should be good through the end of May. Three club records for gar have been set. Robbie and Elly Robinson have been working Chippokes Creek for their gar. Robbie set records on 12-plug (8-0) and 6 general (13-0). Elly has the point lead with a 13-8 club record on 2-plug. Fred Cousins woke up a big 16-0 Chickahominy River gar on 2 general. Other freshwater catches include a nice 1-2 sunfish on 2-fly by Tom Barnett, a club record 0-9 rock bass on 6-fly by Robbie Robinson and brook trout catches by Robbie and Elly. The Johns Creek brookies weighed 1-4 and That leaves the Johns Creek rainbows. Five more entries to report, starting with Danny Noland s club record 8-5 on 4- fly. It replaces his 7-13 as the largest ever in competition! With a score of 769 points, it easily won the April C.V. Kinnard angler of the month contest. Elly Robinson placed second and third with a 5-2 rainbow on 2-fly that scored 683 points and the 13-8 gar on 2-plug worth 490 points. In addition to the Kinnard entry, Elly also turned in a club record 6-6 rainbow on 12-fly and has an early May entry of a 6-4 on 2-fly! Robbie got in on the action with a 4-10 on 4-fly. Congratulations guys! Louis Adams with a nice tarpon caught out of Goodland, Florida on 4/20/05. Several club members have described the 2005 hickory shad run as the best in years. The numbers of fish caught have been excellent, but most fish are less than 2 pounds. As the hickories

Stories and notes on fishing from our members. For the past five months or so, club members have been focusing predominately on freshwater species with good results. Beginning in May (late May this year) and continuing into June, saltwater really begins to heat up and in many years the presidents cup, a lot of the Angler of the Year entries and many species and division cups are won during the late spring and early summer. My favorite place to fish is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT), in particular the 3rd island. That s not to say other places on the CBBT are not great places to fish I caught my 8 lb. class record, 82-8 black drum on the tube at the 2nd island in June. I also caught my 6 lb. world record spadefish at the 4th island but spending the day fishing at the 3rd island has it all most of the time. I ll start at sunrise, steaming to the 3rd island to get in on the gray trout. My dad and I fish for trout between the first four sets of pilings on the bridge side of the island. Dad has caught two world record trout and I ve caught one world record bluefish here. It s not uncommon to catch big croaker, rockfish and flounder while fishing this area for trout. Next we ll plug or troll the tube end for rockfish. Then we ll cruise the ocean side of the island looking for pods of black drum. Last year they were on the ocean side, straightaway stacked up in a very large school and they ate all day long. The black drum arrived at the 3rd island in the 3rd week of May. I caught the president s cup there a 74-0 on 8 plug. I also caught a 40-0 fish on 12 fly. Black drum can also be found over the tube on the bay side, sometimes swimming slowly on the surface, which makes fishing for them absolutely wonderful and exciting. My dad and I will explain more on how to catch black drum at the islands at the club meeting this month While fishing for the drum, keep and eye out for spadefish as the two species intermingle. We fish for spades in the afternoon by anchoring on the ocean side at the Block House and fishing clam under floats and/or free lining clam on spinning tackle. Big spades arrive here early in June. Ricky Dale holds the 2 lb. world record at 9 lb., but my dad caught an spade on 2 before the species was recognized for line class records. He caught his at the islands not the tower where everyone and their brother fishes for spades. About 5PM, we reverse and plug for rockfish and jig for trout well into the night before heading for the dock only to get up and do it all over again the next day. I can t imagine how good the fishing is going to be once the second set of tunnels is constructed and all the new rock is placed on the new tunnel to attract even more hungry fish of many different species. -- Robbie Robinson
