BACKLASH (Commentary from the Board of Directors) August Membership Meeting The program for the August Membership Meeting might as well be called How to Put A Lot Of Fish In Your Boat With A Long Rod. Member Scott Johnston met brothers John and James Losen who shared an interesting approach to fly-fishing with Scott. Scott will host John and James who will explain their system of fly-fishing. The brothers have fly fished their entire lives and have never used a spin or plug rod! Club members who are interested in earning the various Expert Awards need to master the long rod. Attend the presentation with an open mind and see what is possible. You may gain enough confidence to invite the neighbors over for a fish fry and then go catch enough fish (with a long rod) to feed them. Club Calendar Sale a Complete Success Under the leadership of John Butrico, the Virginia Anglers Club s annual Department of Game and Inland Fisheries 2005 / 2006 calendar sale is essentially sold out for this year. The purchased 300 calendars for sale and all have been sold or are spoken for. The past practice of purchasing additional calendars when the initial order gave out resulted in difficulty in accounting for the extra calendars. This year, the Club will not order additional calendars. Want to Order a Golf Style or T Shirt? Are you interested in ordering a golf style shirt or a special T shirt? Contact Eddy Johnston with style, size, color and pocket preference in hand. Eddy is about ready to place the initial order, so please move promptly with your request. Ukrop s Golden Receipts Submission Nets $ For the Club Treasury The Virginia Anglers Club is richer by $125.20, thanks to the effort of some members who submitted their Golden Receipts earned by shopping at Ukrop s Super Markets. The total value of receipts turned in on behalf of the totaling $ A downside was identified at the August Board Of Director s Meeting. The ratio of dollars received vs. the dollar value of the Golden Receipts submitted was noted to be down significantly from past years. Please remember to capture the Golden Receipts to which you are entitled and turn them in to the Special Activities Chairman or any other Officer or Director of the Club. Publicity will be coming along in the ANGLER as the claim date for the receipts comes next year. For the Leadership of the Virginia Anglers Club, John Wetlalufer, Sr. CATCHY COMMENTS by Dennis Cline No summer doldrums so far this year. In fact, the fishin has been almost as hot as the weather! Bruce Henderson captured Angler of the Month honors for the second straight month. His winning catch was a 34-0 barracuda on 6-spin that scored 523 points. Elly Robinson placed second with a 28-8 barracuda on 6-spin worth 438 points. Buddy Noland landed a 4-2 black sea bass on 6-plug to take third with 305 points. Congratulations to all!! Danny Noland had a 14-0 amberjack on 6-plug and a 2-10 black sea bass on 2-plug. Other cuda catches were made by Travis Henderson (28-0), Jennifer Henderson (32-0), Robbie Robinson (16-0) and Dennis Cline (32-0). Bill DuVal and Dennis Cline each landed an elusive African Pompano. Bill s was a 23-0 on 16-plug and Denny s was a club record 20-0 on 8-plug. Elly and Robbie claimed the first two club records in our new gag grouper category. Elly s was a 9-12 on 12 general and Robbie s an 8-14 on 16 general. Dr. Jim Wright has also been busy this month. He has registered releases for a 48 dolphin, bluefin tuna (8) and yellowfin tuna (2) all on heavy tackle. He also scored with a 60-0 cobia on 30 general and a 10-8 king mackerel on 50 general. A 6-10 flounder caught by Dennis Cline on 2 general Parks Rountree with his pending IGFA record spadefsh, an 8-4 on 6 general Inshore action has been good for croaker, flounder and spadefish. Parks Rountrey caught an 8-4 spadefish off Oregon Inlet on 6 general, which is a potential IGFA line class record! Dennis Cline landed a 6-10 flounder on 2 general near Cape Charles. Several club members have tried the elusive Eastern Shore tarpon with no success as yet, but there have been a few exciting moments! On the freshwater side, several new club records have been set. Up in Lake Erie, Steve Luterek has found the yellow perch. His 1-4 on 6 general is one of the records. He claims there are lots more to come from that lake! Stuart Lee released a club record 3-9 bowfin on 6 fly at Lake Gaston. Elly Robinson has the new flathead catfish record for 16 general with a The most impressive of the new records was Robbie Robinson s 28-0 flathead on 4 general. As I hear it, this fish spent an hour and twenty minutes running around the hole and hiding under rocks, but Mike Ostrander did a masterful job of keeping the boat in position and at the end had to grab the frisky cat by the jaw!! For the past thirty years I have worked for the Maymont Foundation where I serve as Associate Executive Director. Boats: 18 center console, 16 Jon Boat, 14 Jon Boat, I finally sold my canoe. Specialty: I am always looking for a new technique or an undiscovered fishery. Fishing Preferences: It s usually what I am fishing for at the time but I truly love ES surf fishing for Drum with Denny and Bob Shepherd; catching monster brown trout in small streams in New York; big catfish on flies; catching most anything on a fly rod; then there are walleye in Canada and of course 6 inch horny heads in Maggodee Creek in Franklin County (but now I have found they will take a size 22 midge).
