BACKLASH (Commentary from the Board of Directors) Annual Awards Banquet To Be Held January 28, 2006 The Virginia Anglers Club Annual Awards Banquet will be held at the Meadowbrook Country Club on Saturday evening, January 28,2006. The Cocktail Hour and a half will start at 5:30 PM and the buffet will start at 7:00 PM. The entrees will be roast beef and flounder stuffed with crabmeat accompanied by the normal array of salads, vegetables and desserts. The cost of the meal will be $26.00 per person. A cash bar will be available. Reservation information will be found elsewhere in this newsletter. Please pay dues and reservations by separate checks. The raffle this year will feature four items. Two collections of flies, one tied by Bill Gallash and the other tied by Capt. Ronnie Sides, will be mounted in shadow boxes being made by Tony Horsley. Two gift certificates will also be offered, one redeemable at the Stony Point Shopping Centre and the other at the Skilligalee Restaurant. Pictures Needed For The Annual Banquet Digital Collage Buddy and Danny Noland are looking for lots of good men who have lots of pictures of angling activities and catches for the past year. Please send any such pictures you have to Danny or Buddy. Pictures in digital format (.jpg files) or snap shots are equally acceptable. Buddy and Danny compile these pictures into the projected picture show that is run during the cocktail hour and a half at the banquet. Increased Dues Are Now In Effect The annual dues for in-state and out-of-state Active Memberships have increased by $5 to $60 and $40 per year. This is the first increase in dues in eleven years. There is no change in the $35 initiation fee. Please remember the amounts of the new dues when making your dues payment for the 2006 Angling Year. Active Membership dues are currently due. Honorary and Life Members are excused from paying dues. Financial Health Of The Virginia Anglers Club Is Excellent Treasurer Fred Cousins presented the financial report for the 2005 fiscal year (Dec.-Nov.) at the December Board of Director s Meeting. Fred reported that income exceeded expenses by about $1400. Income fell short of budget by about $900 and expenses were a little more than $2300 less than budgeted. Cash on hand is about $9700 and is divided between a $5000 Certificate of Deposit and a checking account balance, both of which are with First Market Bank. The good income performance this year reflects the extra contributions by members that were made with their dues payments for The reductions in the cost of bulletin production and cost of awards were the main areas of reduction in expenses. Officer Election To Be Conducted In December Please refer to the ballot found elsewhere in this issue of the Angler to see the members nominated with BOD approval for the 2006 Leadership Team. All regular and Lifetime members are eligible to vote in the election by returning a marked ballot. Room for votes for write-in candidates is also provided. The Leadership Team wishes all Members and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Catch-Filled new year. For the Leadership Team, John Wetlalufer, Sr. Director

2 Page 2 CATCHY COMMENTS It Ain t Over Till the Fat Lady Sings!! By Elly Robinson Bruce Henderson I know the feeling!!! Just when you think you are safe and have won a species, tackle division or the coveted Presidents Cup, along comes Bill Duval!! And it s Bill singing It ain t over till...!! Bruce had been the leader of the pack for many months with a real nice 34 lb. Cuda on 6 spin for 523 points. Then Bill decided to go gray trout fishing with his wife Gene, that lady with over 100 world records. Their adventure was out of Oregon Inlet and Gene was looking for some Weakfish fly rod world records. The trout bite had been hot on a super secret mound off Rodanthe. Reminds me of Bill and Stuart Lee s secret lumps off Nags Head for bluefin tuna of years ago. Anyway while Gene was fly casting Bill decided to catch a few trout himself. Being the sportsman he is, Bill decided to tip his jig with shrimp to give him the added advantage of a little scent no I don t want to talk about Fishbites!! Anyway guess what is on that mound, a 51 pound red drum that Bill hooks and lands on 8 general IGFA Approved World Record Spadefish caught by Parks Rountrey. 8-4 on 6 lb. test. for 566 points, besting Bruce s Cuda by 43 points!! I guess it s all in a days work for our newest Master Angler. Congratulations Bill and condolences Bruce maybe next year for your first Presidents Cup. At the November membership meeting Danny Noland won the Angler of the Month award with a 7lb 8oz Rainbow Trout on 4 fly for 694 points from where else, Johns Creek!! Buddy Noland got second place with a 6lb 4oz Rainbow on 4 fly for 577 points on the same trip. Bill Duval s Red Drum took 3 rd place. Fred Cousins entered 2 real nice fish and came in 4 th and 5 th place in the Angler of the Month contest 35 lb Blue Catfish on 4 general for 373 points and a 5lb 9oz Spotted Seatrout on 2 spin for 370 points. The cat was caught in the James River while Fred was fishing with Eddie Johnston and gave Fred hopes of winning the annual Freshwater Angler of the Year award. The trout came from the Hot Ditch. Dennis Cline got in the act and landed a very nice 13 lb Little Tunny on 6 fly for 433 points which should secure Dennis the Saltwater Angler of the Year Award unless Bruce Henderson can pull a Bill Duval!! Dennis caught the fish at Cape Lookout in early November fishing with Ronnie Sides I believe. Dr. Jim Wright has been fishing in the Elizabeth River and has caught 2 citation Spotted Seatrout of 5lb 6 oz and 5lb 12 oz. Speaking of it at over till... Dennis Cline decided that a little last minute fishing was in order as the angling year came to a close. Wonder if he was thinking about the Angler of the Year Awards? Fred Murray took Dennis to his super secret James River catfish hole on November 28 th and boy did Dennis strike it rich. Dennis caught a 19lb 12oz Flathead Catfish on 2 plug for 398 points and a 24lb 4oz Flathead on Continued on Page 3...

3 Page 3 CATCHY COMMENTS continued from Page 2. 4 spin for 411 points. Both were club records. A next day trip to Johns Creek by the two resulted in 4 hours of driving in vain as heavy rain completely flooded the creek and made fishing impossible. But not to be deterred Dennis went to Lee Hall on the 30 th and landed a club record 3lb Chain Pickerel on 2 plug for 300 points. At the complete other end of the spectrum some club members are getting an early start on the new angling year. Would you believe that Fred Cousins hit the James River on December 3 rd under the guiding hand of Eddie Johnston ( again ) and came away with a 41lb Blue Catfish on 4 General for 437 points. What a way to start the year! But Fred wasn t finished. He hit the Hot Ditch on the 9 th and caught a club record 3lb 14oz Spotted Seatrout on 2 plug and a 3lb 3oz Speckle on 2 spin. Way to go Fred!! News Flash : Just got a call from Mike Ostrander who was fun fishing with his wife on the James River the afternoon of the 16 th. Mike said he just had to tell somebody about the fish he had just caught. Well I was ready for some huge catfish since his wife Lynda Richardson had caught a 60lb bluecat just a week earlier. Well Mike says he just landed a 27lb 8 oz Striped Bass on 6 general for 366 points and a club record while fishing cut bait on the bottom just below Dutch Gap. Have you noticed every fish caught in the James River comes from below Dutch Gap!! Kind of reminds me of Duval s hump!! Stuart Lee, I suggest you switch your fishing spots.
