1 GRAND STRAND SALTWATER ANGLERS ASSOCIATION THE HOOK I missed two very important names on my list of members to thank for all their hard work during our Flounder Tournament. Big thanks to Bill and Barb Pierson who attended meetings and worked both the captains meeting and the day of the tournament, not just this year but every year the club has run the tournament! Bill and Barb have served on many a club committee, and helped out for many years in the club. Our first pier fishing tournament was a fun filled day out on Coming Up: FROM THE PRESIDENTS COMPUTER 2nd Avenue Pier. The weather cooperated and we had a sunny day with a comfortable breeze all day long. Co -Chairman Dave Williams picked up three very nice rod and reel combos from our club sponsors as prizes for the members that caught the biggest South Carolina game fish off the Pier that day. The only thing missing was the fish! First prize went to Dave Williams catching the only Spanish Mackerel caught by one of our members that day. Second place was Kevin Seay, edging Darla Williams into JUNE 2014 third after both reeling in a spot. Our crew did catch an assortment of sea creatures that are not on the game fish list. Kevin had the most and the largest oyster crackers caught. Connor Toole, new member Kevin brought in, put a lot of effort into jigging for Spanish all day to no avail. Rich and Patti Mickelsen put in a hard days work with the fish refusing to bite their lines. Dave and I caught a couple of skates, and Bill Cash and I pulled in a few sharks with a double at one time. Anne Seay fished off her winning Cont on pg 3... Past President Dave Williams Members at Large Ed Skowysz Bill Cash Kevin Seay Editor Jen Seay Jseay@horrycounty schools.net Good and Welfare Tammy Sayre Darla Williams RECIPE OF THE MONTH: CRISPY CRAB NUGGETS 1 pound fresh crab meat Put breadcrumbs in food processor so 3 slices of white bread, crust removed or packaged bread crumbs In a large bowl, mix together egg, mayon- they are chopped up fine (to save time). 1 egg beaten naise, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon mayonnaise parsley, and Old Bay seasoning. 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Add breadcrumbs and crab meat and mix 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce by hand to avoid breaking up too many of 1 tablespoon Old Bay Seasoning the lumps. 1 tablespoon parsley You may need to break up the very large lumps however so the crab balls will stay together. Shape into 24 balls and fry in batches in hot oil until golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels. Serve with your favorite sauce or don't use any! Source Chick McDaniels

3 Report taken from local guides, Sun News, fintalk.com and word of mouth Quote of the Month: Creek: Flounder, red drum, spotted seatrout, black drum, sheepshead A cold front last weekend and windy conditions have stymied local estuary fishing a bit, but plenty of fish are being caught, especially flounder. Top areas for flounder are small inlets with little freshwater influx such as Cherry Grove Inlet, Tubbs Inlet and Murrells Inlet. Capt. Mark Dickson of Shallow-Minded Inshore Charters in Little River had a good trip on Thursday, catching several flounder including three keepers along with two nice red drum. Dickson caught the flounder in Tubbs Inlet and the reds on docks on the Intracoastal Waterway in Sunset Beach, N.C., all on mud minnows. Early this week, Capt. Mike McDonald of Gul-R-Boy Guide Service had a good trip, catching six trout, one flounder and one red while fishing Winyah Bay and the jetties. McDonald caught all the trout on plastic grubs, and noted there are plenty of menhaden and a few finger mullet available for bait. McDonald noted muddy water conditions in the bay and surrounding area are hampering fishing. Inshore: Spanish, cobia, king, bluefish, weakfish, black sea bass, whiting, pompano, flounder black drum, croaker Spadefish have arrived on local near-shore reefs, and their preferred food, jelly balls, are currently plentiful. Dickson fished the Sherman Wreck and 410/510 area in about feet of water on Tuesday and caught spadefish, Spanish mackerel, small cobia, keeper black sea bass and even released a 16-inch gag grouper. Grand Strand piers are producing numerous species led by catches of Spanish mackerel and bluefish. The Spanish, they re just eating up the gold hook rigs, said Steve Gann of Cherry Grove Pier said Thursday. It s been pretty good (fishing) the last four or five days. Other species caught this week include whiting, croaker, spots, black drum, red drum and flounder. Offshore: dolphin, blackfin tuna, wahoo, grouper, vermillion snapper, porgy, amberjack It will be an active Friday and Saturday in the offshore waters near and offshore of the Winyah Scarp and Georgetown Hole with boats fishing in the Georgetown Blue Marlin Tournament. Billfish action has increased in the last few weeks, which bodes well for the tournament. Dolphin action is very good with a good number of gaffer fish in the pound range being caught. The number of blackfin tuna being caught is also good with a few wahoo mixed in. Bottom fishing is very good for grouper, vermilion snapper, black sea bass and triggerfish. Red snapper cannot be harvested in the South Atlantic region and must be released. Spot from last time with no hookups this time, though. One of the things I really enjoy is letting all the tourists touch and hold the sharks, especially teenage girls that make some very interesting noises when handed the shark. I love it when you hand the shark to the little girl or boy, and the look on their face when their parents take a picture is so priceless you know it will be something they remember for a long time to come. Our next outing is our Catfish Roundup Saturday June 7th at Wacca Wache Marina. Meet there at 7 am to enter the Calcutta. We usually end it at 3 pm and put our catch together to take to Dave s house for Sunday morning fish cleaning. I hope that I wasn't too long winded, and that I imparted some wisdom during the course of my spiel. If anyone has any further questions, please feel free to me, and with school getting out for the summer I will have a bit of free (er) time on my hands to maybe meet up and help you with anything pertaining to your own computer if you so desire. My goal is to eventually go paper free with the newsletter and the only way I can do that is if everyone has an . Now before you get all up in arms, I am not, I repeat am not, doing this any time in the next couple months. :) We have made great strides in the past few years, two years ago everyone got a printed copy of the newsletter and now over half of the club gets an ed newsletter! That is great! Just one more thing we can do for the conservation of our beautiful planet. I d also like Catfish Fun Fact In honor of our Catfish Roundup this month, here are some fun facts about catfish to make us sound really smart at the dock! The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. The candiru, a small South American catfish, is the only vertebrate parasite of people. It has been known to enter the urethra of bathers. The walking catfish moves across land from one body of water to another using its pectoral fins like legs, and having a modified gill chamber to get oxygen from the air. The largest confirmed record in the US was a blue catfish weighing 150 lbs in The largest known blue caught in TN was a 130 pounder. A female blue catfish can produce as many as 100,000 eggs at a time! The electric catfish, native to Africa, is capable of generating up to 350 volts. The glass catfish is mostly transparent and is often seen in aquariums at home. Catfish are also included in aquariums as scavengers, to help keep the tank clean. The SC state record is 109 lbs from The blue catfish was introduced to SC when it was stocked into Lake Marion. Us eventually to have a Google group where we can share all sorts of information, more privately than Facebook. But enough of that for the time being. Dave and Bill are getting headaches. On to the fun stuff! Fishing! The flounder is here, folks, and there might be a lot of babies, but they are indeed swimming around. I myself caught a few little ones in the inlet this past weekend, and have heard lots of success stories from Little River. And lets not forget about the catfish monster catfish are being found everywhere, this past weekend I also had the opportunity to spy on my boyfriends brothers haul from running a trot line down in the Big Pee Dee. Whooowee! Dinner for days! Catfish are the states principal fish as far as freshwater goes, and in a lot of places are stocked. Couple that with the amount of eggs female catfish are capable of laying, and we have ourselves some serious fish out there to catch! The biggest fish though, are not necessarily the yummiest so lets all go get out there and try to catch some dinner! We are definitely going to be hungry at the meeting if we re not catchin! Furthermore, remember how all our caught fish tasted so much better at last years meeting? Join up with a buddy, grab a rod, and we ll see you out on the water!
