Photos from recent Grand Isle weekend It was great food, good friends, LOTS of wind from the tropical storm and the fish stories!!! Emmitt s photo tells the story, the wind took a toll on all that attended.. Hopefully better weather next time Yes, Roger was there and the wind followed him.. AGAIN!! RSFF Returns to Lake Concordia 2012 Fall Warm Water Trip By Jack Lithgoe, Warm water Chair Start tying your jitter bees, cap spiders, poppers, fluff butts and yo-yo flies for the September return to Lake Concordia. That's right, RSFF warm water fly flingers will descend upon Lake Concordia on Sept 21-23, and we'll have the main house at Lakeview Lodge. If you plan to stay in one of the separate rooms, you should call to make a reservation before September 7th. There are rooms at Sportsman's Lodge also, but the Big House has been sold and not available for rent. RSFF, PO Box 3761, Page 2 Baton Rouge, La

Team up with someone or bring a guest. Lake Concordia is ideal for bass boat, bateau, flats boat or skiff, as well as paddle craft. You'll see people fishing from bay boats and pontoon boats as well. Don't have a boat, come anyway. You can fish from the pier, or stowaway on someone s boat. If you or your guest just wants to get away for the weekend and not fish, bring a book and sit in one of the swings under the cypress trees. It sure beats painting the garage. September can still be plenty hot, but by then, there will be a hint of fall in the air and night time temperatures will be pleasant. Rod selection can be anything, but a 3 or 5 wt is ideal. Bring your 8 wt and get up early and try a bass popper or frog at first light. Bring a towel and wash cloth, bug spray, sun block, water and snacks. We'll have a fish fry on Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning. You're on your own Friday night, but there are plenty of places to eat. A number of us have gotten used to grilling steaks while nursing an adult beverage. There is a grill and we'll have charcoal. You'll probably eat better than if you stayed at home. And lest I forget, bring your vice and tying gear and share your tying expertise. I hope to see some of you tying balsa poppers that you got from Kirk Dietrich's class. If you don't have any warm water flies, or are challenged by this part of the sport, go see Uncle Larry at Green Trout Fly Shop in Denham Springs. He ll fix you up with some proven bream poppers. Get him to show you the new BVK rod from TFO while you're there. I look forward to this trip as it usually is signaling the change of seasons. I hope you can make it. Call or me to sign up for this trip. 5 Message flagged Red flag in the Gulf of Mexico Hide Details FROM: TO: Coastal Conservation Association Sheldon Anderson Tuesday, August 7, :13 PM Gulf fisheries management at a dangerous point Call to Action What is happening in the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is big. Really big. At first glance, it may not look like a big deal but it is a giveaway that is scarcely conceivable in the management of other natural resources. The Gulf Council is considering dividing recreational anglers into two sectors, those with their own boats and those who own charter and for-hire boats. The Council would then take some portion of the fish now given to all recreational anglers and literally give it away to a select few businesses operating those charter and for-hire boats to use as their own, however and whenever they wish. And what would those businesses pay for this windfall? Nothing. What are the tangible conservation benefits of this course of action? Nothing. The manner in which proponents and NOAA Fisheries staff have attempted to force through sector separation without the basis of real information on impacts that could affect our Gulf fishing for generations has drawn the opposition of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus. The CSC, with more than 300 members in the U.S. Congress, promotes and protects the rights of anglers and hunters and is one of many groups opposing this issue on behalf of Gulf Coast anglers Sector separation is a bad idea, plain and simple. We need your help to beat it. A critical vote on sector separation could come as early as the next Gulf Council meeting, August in New Orleans. Please take a few moments and tell the Gulf Council to reject separation. It is important to defeat this measure now - we don't want to discover the details of a radical new federal program after it is approved. Click HERE to send your message. 6 Volunteers needed for NHF Day Sat, Sept 22 by Catch Cormier, Events Chair The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will host their 28th annual National Hunting and Fishing Day on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at four venues across Louisiana. This celebration of the outdoors features numerous exhibits and activities designed to educate and entertain both young and old. Once again, RSFF has been asked to exhibit at the Waddill venue here in Baton Rouge. We've been a part of NHF Day since our inception as a club 24 years ago. I realize this date conflicts with our Fall Weekend to Lake Concordia. It s not the first time probably won t be the last either. But with nearly 100 members, we have always find 6-8 folks who only have that Saturday open, and can t make Concordia. But can make NHFD if only for a few hours. If you re one of those the few the brave the proud the restricted from a weekend trip, then you belong with us at NHFD. We can have up to six "official" volunteers, however, we routinely have unofficial volunteers as well. The unofficial assist the officials and help teach casting and fly tying, or answer questions about a wide range of topics from knots to where to fish. They just don t get a free t-shirt or a shot at door prizes at the end of the day. The BR venue has several thousand attendees and each year we make several converts to our sport. Not to mention the joy of watching a youngster tie his or her first fly, or master the basic cast. To volunteer (officially or unofficially), please Catch Cormier at catch@laflyfish.com. Playing a Fish with Fly Tackle By Bill Brown, Membership Chair Playing the fish Part 2 in his series So far, we ve only talked about getting ready to play (fight) the fish. The actual playing techniques you should use will depend on the fish, its size and strength, as well as, the habitat in which the fish is swimming. If the fish you ve hooked is small, you can choose to haul it in using the reel or simply strip it in using the same technique you use when stripping in a fly. When stripping in a fish, remember to keep the rod tip high and the line tight. RSFF, PO Box 3761, Page 4 Baton Rouge, La

If the fish is large and there are no obstructions like weeds, sharp rocks or tree stumps for your line to get tangled or cut on, you may want to let the fish run some to get it tired before trying to turn it. This is where the drag on your reel comes in. Set the drag to the strongest setting that will still protect the tippet. Remember, on very long run when the fish takes you well into the backing, the weight of the line and backing can also produce drag on the fish and pull against the tippet. When this occurs, lower your drag slightly to keep your tippet intact. If there are some obstructions, you will want to guide the fish away from them or turn it around before it can reach them. Some have had success guiding fish to one side or the other by tilting the rod to the side in the direction you want it to go. This makes it more difficult for the fish to go in the opposite direction and they ll finally go the way you want. With almost all successful fish-playing techniques you want to keep the line tight, but there is one exception. Some people say you should bow to a jumping fish. This saying suggests that when you are playing a fish and it jumps you should lower your rod tip so that when the fish comes back down it won t have a taught line to land on with its gills which may cut the line. This rule, I understand, works well if you re playing a tarpon or pike which have sharp gill covers, but may not be necessary with a rainbow trout or bass. If you are using a good shock tippet like tie-able wire in saltwater, it may be circumvented on some of the others, as well. If you are using a comparatively light tippet for the size fish you ve hooked, you may want to think about following the fish when it takes off on a long run away from you. This practice entails walking, paddling or motoring, if you re in a boat, in the same direction the fish is going. This can lessen the pressure on the tippet and give you the opportunity to by-pass obstructions that might get in your way when trying to land the fish. Sometimes, it s not possible to follow the fish due to obstructions in your path. Obstructions in your path can take many forms. If you are bank fishing, there may be a downed tree or large rock in your way. When wading a stream, a deep pool can keep you from following your prey. Of course, when bank or surf fishing, if the fish goes into deeper water, you can t follow unless you re willing to swim after it. Following may also be impossible if you are fishing alone from a kayak or canoe where your hands are busy with the rod and reel and you have no way to paddle. Once you get the fish turned around, watch out that it doesn t start swimming toward you. This can cause the line to go slack and the hook fall out of its mouth. With normal fly reels, it can be difficult to keep the line anywhere close to tight when a fish decides to swim back at you. This problem is lessened if you use a large arbor reel which allows more line take-up with each round of the reel, but you ll still have to reel like crazy to keep up with the slack line on a fast fish. You may even think the fish is off the hook until you get the line tight again. When you get the fish close to you or the boat, if applicable, be ready for it to find new life and try to get away again with new found strength. Just keep a tight line and steer it away from any obstructions while you get it close enough to net. I d recommend you always take a net for landing fish, especially if you plan on using light tippets. I recall one trip to fish for Speckled Trout in Matagorda Bay in Texas, when we forgot to put the net on board and ended up losing about 30% of the fish we hooked trying to get them up in the boat without a net. Because of the flexible rods used in flyfishing, playing a fish is a lot more fun than when practicing other types of fishing where you just reel the fish in and hoist the fish into the boat with your stiff rods. But, try not to play the fish too long, especially if you are going to practice catch and release. It may be sport to you, but when a fish gets hooked, it s a life and death situation for the fish. Some fish will fight until they are totally exhausted beyond the point of no return. Releasing a fish like that is counterproductive since it will surely die anyway. This begs the RSFF, PO Box 3761, Page 5 Baton Rouge, La

question of trying to catch large fish on very light rods intending to release them after landing. There are several manufacturers now making 0 and 1 wt. rods. I realize the rod weight should be dependent on the size of the fly you re using, but playing a fish too long because you have a rod that s incapable of landing the fish in a descent time frame is neither practical nor sporting. The circumstances of each fish you hook are going to be different and you will have to determine how to play each one on the fly, so to speak. With experience, beginners will become more adept at getting the fish in without incident, yet each time you ll still feel elated, exhilarated even, each and every time you hook a fish, no matter how many you catch. Every veteran fly angler has lived through the multiple exhilarations one feels when successfully hooking, playing and landing a fish. The first one comes when you realize you ve hooked a fish. You ve been stripping in your fly with little resistance. All of a sudden it stops on something, there s a resistance and then a vibration. The line snaps straight and the rod tip bends. You know the fly you chose and the way you were working it were correct for that place in time. When playing the fish you get another, but different, exhilaration. This time it s not due to a surprise that hits suddenly. It s an excitement that comes from hoping you re staying on your toes, concentrating on doing the right things and realizing you could lose the fish if you do something wrong. This excitement is increased when you first see the fish and find out that it s a big one. Whether you re fishing from a boat or wading in a cold stream, landing the fish is the final and biggest thrill. Until the fish is actually in hand, you know that you could still lose it. When it actually is in hand, you finally realize that what you have just done to catch that fish really worked. You did it all right and you re not going to be skunked today. You can relax a little from the high state of concentration you ve used while playing and landing the fish as a feeling of success comes over you. I believe these multiple exhilarations are the reason most fishermen keep fishing. They will brave cold water, hot summers, mosquitoes, black flies, sunburn, getting up before the sun and staying on the water, skipping meals, until after dark or later just to experience these thrills over and over again. Fun, isn t it? Fly Tyer s Bench July 2012 by Emmitt Simmons Introduction Back from Vacation I just got back from visiting my brother and his family in Spokane, WA. While I was there I was able to go on two guided fishing trips that were absolutely wonderful. The first was a trip to the St. Joe River in Idaho. The second trip was to the Spokane River in Spokane, WA. Not much time to talk about them this month as I am on a tight deadline, but I will get details of some of the patterns that were used and talk about them in the next Fly Tyer s Bench. 13 BALSA WOOD BUG MAKING Making a Square Faced Popper I like a square faced popper for several reasons but they are purely personal. It could be the square, blocky front on one of these that stands out and makes it sort of unrefined and peculiar looking. Also, not being round, it gives a feel of being different, which kind of matches the attitude of flyfishers down south that by picking up a flyrod almost automatically become different. Maybe I m attracted to it for nostalgic reasons having a resemblance to the old Fayard Bug that was made by a local years ago. Fayard s bug was squarish in shape and usually had an eye painted on the bottom and top as if it were a wounded minnow laying on its side. While this bug has a square face, the rest of the bug is tapered and all the edges are rounded to help reduce sharp edges that are prone to wear once you start catching fish; even a round popper will wear first on the edges of the face where the finish is thinner. On the measurable side, the face being square has more surface area and floatation that makes the face float better than a round bug made from the same sized dowel. Granted, this makes it a tad more wind resistant to cast but it is really not noticeable. If you re the type of tier, flyfisher or person in general that tends to defy logic and laugh in the face of fashion, you just might like a square faced popper as much as I do. Keep on Tying, Kirk Page 1 of 7

Select a balsa stick, mark it lengthwise down its center and cut a slot for your hook. You can either start with the wood you have available and select the appropriately sized hook or if you have a hook you want to use, select a stick that is approximately the size of the hook slot of your preferred hook. Cut the slot to a depth that conceals the hook shank. I m in a bad habit of cutting it to deep most of the time. A grooved block of wood makes a great sanding jig to taper the end of your balsa stick, I prefer a medium coarse paper such as 50 or 60 grit. Hold the stick at about a forty five degree angle with the hook slot facing up and stroke the stick back and forth in the groove several times and then turn the stick on one side and then the other side, stroking each side only two or three times. Then smooth down the grain on each of the three sides by pulling the stick towards you in the groove. Repeat for the other side of the stick so you can cut off two bodies. Page 2 of 7

The body should taper from about one third or one half the body length from the front of the body and taper down to the top of the hook slot. This is only a rough shaping as further fine tuning of the shape will be done once the body is glued to the hook. Lay the hook on your cutting surface and make a mark to line up the hook point with and make another mark near the hook eye, I prefer one hook eye back from the hook eye to give room for paint, epoxy topcoat and the possibility of a weedguard tie off place. Measure and mark your balsa stick on these lines. Cut the body from the stick on approximately a 10 degree angle. Heavy pressure is not needed with balsa wood. Let the saw do the work with minimal downward pressure. You can make a jig like pictured by gluing a hacksaw blade with its teeth in the wood to act as a guide to slip your slotted stick or dowel onto and add an angled guide. This will assist in keeping the face of the bug perpendicular to the hook slot and help hold the balsa still while you cut. Page 3 of 7

With a sanding drum dremel bit or a rolled piece of 100 grit sandpaper you can cup the face, or not. Smooth and round off the top and bottom edge of the face with an emery board. With the rolled sandpaper, round off the sides of the face as well. If your hook does not fit snuggly in the hook slot of the balsa body, wrap some heavy thread such as Fly Master +, on the part of the shank that will be glued in the body. Use the head to measure this after you get the thread started so that there isn t any thread in front of or in back of the body that will become frayed and a mess when you start sanding after the body is glued to the hook. Page 4 of 7

Set the hook in the hook slot so that it is near the bottom of the hook slot but not exposed outside of the body. Hold the hook by the bend and check the body alignment to make sure it is on straight and in the position you want. Turn the hook over with the hook slot up and with the hook still in the slot in the position you desire, apply some super thin CA in the hook slot allowing it to soak in down and around the hook shank. After the super thin CA dries, fill any gaps in the hook slot with a thick formula CA to ensure maximum bond. Arrange the bugs on their back with the glue filled hook slot facing upward to prevent it from running out of the slot. I like using a magnetic tool dish on a glass cutting board. Page 5 of 7

After the thick CA dries, use your favorite wood filler to fill any gaps in the hook slot including the rear of the head where the hook comes out. I like using Elmer s water based wood filler. Sand any filler to the contour of the surrounding wood, flat on the bottom and rounded on the rear. Also take this time to fine tune the shape of your bug. Round off any sharp angles, edges and refine the taper and symmetry of the bug the best you can. Page 6 of 7

After the filler and body are smooth and of the desired shape, apply some super thin formula CA glue to the surface of the bug. It will soak in to the outer layer of balsa and harden the surface of the balsa. Dab off the excess on a multi layered paper towel. Make sure to keep the bug angled down and away from your fingers that are holding the bug or that can be a mess. Also, if any glue runs down in to the hook eye, simply touch the hook eye with a paper towel and it will wick right out. If the glue dries in the hole, it is very troublesome to remove. After the CA dries, sand any raised grain rough areas smooth with an emery board. Paint a coat of acrylic paint sealer to the finished body to prepare it for painting. Page 7 of 7
