7 Kit Review: By Jack Sarhage, NAR Though Qualified Competition Rockets (QCR) Kit 160B does not model a particular bi wing aircraft, with the right paint, tissue, and decals it can be made to look like many of those that flew during World War I. Of course we aren t talking about airplanes, but boost-gliders (BiG). Many will tell you all that decoration does is add more weight. That s true! Yet I ve seen and built Peanut Scale (maximum 13-inch wing span) models having most of the detail there get flights of 3, 4 even 6-minutes. The same many will argue that those Peanut Scale models don t reach the speed or under go the G-forces placed upon a BIG. True enough! But, maybe that tissue covering will beef it up enough to prevent it from reaching the dreaded speed of balsa. Anyway, I decided to make my bi-wing boost glider, the subject of this review, look like a something between a Sopwith Camel and a Fokker SE5. This kit has two parts to it; a pop-pod and the glider itself. Those of us that have been around the hobby for awhile will recognize the pop-pod based upon the technology of 1977 when Chris Flanigan first introduced it. And, I would be willing to bet that most pop-pods used to launch boost-gliders are some off shoot of the Flanigan Standard Pod. The pod is the easiest part of the kit. The glider takes careful attention to detail and patience. But, anyone that has built a few model rockets can do it. Make sure that the wings are parallel to each other, the correct distance apart and offset as shown on the plans. Ditto for the rudder and stabilizer as well. This is not going to be one of those stick part a to part b type reviews. If you need that kind of instruction, I suggest building a couple more Wizards. The only criticism I have with the particular kit I got was that I thought the balsa was not up to QCR s usual standards. But, for $9.00, plus S&I-I, you can have a model that is different and add to your building skill. Flight day was at our 27 July Sport Launch. It was cool, overcast, and not a North Branch zephyr to be felt. I had the glider trimmed out real nice during it s hand tossed first flights. Maybe 1 should have stopped there. There were certain signs that maybe I should wait until another day to fly it. Like, after installing the B4-4 motor I attempted to insert the ignitor, only to find I had put the motor in backwards. Du-u-uh! About those B4-4s. That was not my choice and I had even purchased B4-2s for this model. But, for some reason I could not find them and went ahead. That was another sign not to fly it. Of course you know the results. Yep, a Red Baron. Which are not usual for me anyway, as Arnie pointed out. That s okay, part of my job is making everyone else look good. The damage is a crimped launch pod tube that can be rebuilt or a new one made. The glider is in good shape and will fly again. Hopefully, at our 31 August launch. The bi-wing glider is an interesting model and fun to build and fly. Just remember to use short delay motors as the glider needs to seperate during boost and not after it turns earthward. Now that you see what a kit review looks like you can do one yourself the next time you build a model. Make notes as you go along, especially on those places that were difficult, or where you found an easier way of doing it without changing the design or stability of the kit. Then, send it to Steve Flynn, our editor. I know he will appreciate it,
