1 REQUEST OF A QUOTATION TO CARRY OUT STRUCTURAL ASSESSMENT OF BRIDGES, VIADUCT, BOX CULVERTS AND DRAINAGE STRUCTURES ON THE LAKE MAGADI AND KONZA RAILWAY LINE. Tata chemicals Magadi Limited, transport a minimum of 500,000 tonnes per annum of which 90% is soda ash from Magadi to Mombasa for export through the Port of Mombasa. The products are carried in hopper and covered wagons. The other products are fuel oil which are transported in normal fuel tank wagons from Mombasa to Magadi. TCML operate and control the 146 Km Railway line from Lake Magadi to Konza. 1. OBJECTIVES The main objective of this tender is: 1. To assess the structural suitability of all bridges, viaduct and box culverts on the railway line between Lake Magadi and Konza, bearing in mind that these structures were designed many years ago and have been in use for a long time. 2. Identify any existing condition that can restrict locomotives from operating on Magadi Railway line, 3. Suggest requirements needed to be fulfilled on these structures to enable locomotives to operate safely on the railway line. 2. SCOPE OF WORKS 1. Reconnaisance survey of all bridges, viaduct and box culverts,so as to have a basic idea of their state, 2. Carry out structural analysis (both substructure and super structure) to establish structural integrity of the following Bridges and Viaduct: Km 47..Girder bridge Km48/20..Girder bridge Km57..Viaduct Km60..Viaduct Km65..Girder bridge Km80..Girder bridge Km 139 Viaduct

2 3. Establish present strength of the bridges/viaducts, load bearing capacity for metre gauge track on them and assess the capacity to safely carry present fleet of locomotives at established maximum speed. 4. Assess the structural suitability and adequacy of the box culverts between Lake Magadi and Konza. 5. Suggest measures for strengthening foundations and superstructural members which might be structurally inadequate, 6. Come up with cost estimates for strengthening works of both superstructure and sub structural components of the bridges. 7. Estimate the annual maintenance cost of the bridges, 8. Recommendations. 3.
