Spokane Fly Fishers April, 2018 APRIL CLUB MEETING TO FEATURE: NYMPHING TECHNIQUES A CUTTING EDGE PRESENTATION WITH DEVIN OLSEN Devin Olsen of the U.S. International Fly Fishing Team is scheduled to be our presenter at our April 11th club meting. Devin is one of the young up and coming professional fly fishers of the new generation who has refined his fly fishing abilities over the last two decades. Having worked as a guide in the Enterprise/Joseph, Oregon area for the last several years, Devin recently relocated to the Salt Lake City area. There he operates The Tactical Fly Fisher company with his business partner and Fly Fishing Teammate, Glade Gunther. Together they have produced an instructional DVD on subsurface fly fishing that is now available on their website As the fly fishing world works its way through an ever changing world regarding subsurface river fishing, Devin brings a scientific and logistical breath of fresh air to hooking up with trout. From the Leisenring Lift to dead-drifting nymphs with yarn indicators or the newer thing-a-ma-bobbers, the introduction of Czech nymphing and Euro-nymphing the world of subsurface trout fishing has certainly seen its share of change and resulting debate (or should I say confusion) among fly fishers. Devin will present the latest innovation in subsurface fishing in the form of sighter nymphing and explain how it came about and why it, in almost all circumstances, out-produces previous nymphing techniques and theory. He ll walk the audience through constructing the most efficient rod/line/ leader/tippet combinations to increase your success rate on the rivers you fish. These are lessons learned in the heat of battle on the international competition stage against the teams from France, Czechoslovakia, England, Germany and elsewhere. Don t miss this presentation if you value your time on the river and want to increase your success rate when trout just won t come to your surface offerings. 2 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 2 PREZ SEZ By: Doug Keene Spring is here, the lakes and rivers are open, and it s time to go Fly Fishing! Its still a bit chilly in the mornings, some rivers are a bit high, but as we all know, fly fishers don't notice such trivial issues. There are no excuses, whatsoever, for not getting your feet wet and your lines tight. Go for it! I am now well stocked in newly tied flies from the Intermediate Fly Tying class (not really a class as much as a "meet"). Any holes in my stock are being filled at the local fly shops or on my own vise. My equipment is being set out, cleaned, adjusted, and tested to make sure it won't be a problem. I already bought my Washington License (good on April 1), and am ready to buy an annual license for Idaho for my planned river fishing. I am trying a new line this year, and am experimenting with a new aluminum reel to carry it. The line cost almost as much as my rod, but of course it will guarantee twice as many fish being caught. Wait, what? Seriously, it does feel a lot better, so hopefully it will give me some boost. Our first outings will be coming up in just a few weeks, mostly on the local lakes, and this is a great time of year for almost all of these lakes. I am hopeful that a lot of you will come out to join in with your fellow members to have some fun, share some stories, and fish the heck out of the lakes. The one fly event is a great event, even for our recent fly school members, as it can be won by just about anyone with a simple Woolly Bugger or leech. The Amber Lake outing is also a great beginner lake, but the experts always have a good day and are willing to share some knowledge with new members. The Education Committee has come up with some great events at Williams Lake and the North Fork of the Coeur d'alene river this year, including both regular and fly school graduates on a first come, first served basis. These are mentored events limited to 15 people each this year. The rest of you are needed as mentors for the students, so step up and volunteer. We need lots of you, and mentors do not have to be world class, just experienced (i.e., not a beginner). See the note later in the newsletter for details. The Annual Club Picnic is coming up on May 12th. This event replaces our monthly meeting, so we hope that everyone can attend. There is always good food, some fun events, and fishing before and after at Clear Lake out near Medical Lake. Now go catch some fish! DUES REMINDER Memberships for Spokane Fly Fishers expire on May 31, Please renew your membership at our April meeting or contact Mark Gardner, our Membership Chairman. You may contact Mark and pay your dues, if you wish, by going to membership@spokaneflyfishers.com.

THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 3 CONSERVATION CORNER By: Claude Kistler, Chairman CONSERVATION/EDUCATION RAFFLE REPORT By: Claude Kistler and Miguel Ferrera Due to numerous volunteers, donors and bidders, the Conservation and Education Raffle was again a success. Our club members and area shops were most generous in providing over 110 items to raffle this year. While a final tally isn t complete, we should realize a net of over $3000 or up approximately $500 from the previous year. Special thanks to Linda Howe for her work and support and to the team of Mike Berube and Dan Ferguson for running the front of the house during the raffle. Dan, thanks for your great work as emcee. Special thanks also to the behind the scenes folks for taking care of ticket sales, item check in, labeling, logging, runners and clean-up. Again, a great example of the men and women who help make the raffle and our club run so smoothly. A special shout out goes to our business donors; the Sportsman s Warehouse stores (North and Valley) for their generous donations, especially to the Valley store for providing a discount on the brand new pontoon boat. Thanks to Silver Bow for a guided trip on the Spokane River, Joe Cantrell Outfitting for a trip on the Clark Fork, Lee Davison Outfitters, Cabela s for a rod/reel combo, Orvis for a rod/reel combo and the North 40, Coeur d Alene, for a generous gift certificate. Thanks to our members who also provided trips. Trips are great draws and from the reactions of all trip winners, all trips are greatly desired and appreciated. Also, a shout out to the 20 plus new members of this year s Fly Fishing School who participated in the raffle. Almost all won items and are off to a great start in beginning their fly fishing journey and, hopefully, their continued participation in the Spokane Fly Fishers. Again, thanks to all who donated items and purchased tickets in support of our Conservation and Education efforts. OUTINGS HOSTS NEEDED By: John Hudson We are still looking to fill a few more spots for this summer s outings. See the list in this issue of the Barbless Flyer. Anyone who has an interest but may be unsure of what all is entailed in hosting should contact me, John Hudson. I would be willing to co-host an outing to either Rock Creek, Lower Selway, Dry Falls or Clark Fork. Please help make our/your club enjoyable for new members by helping to host outings. Remember, No Host No outing. John Hudson please try to call evenings or jhcutbow@comcast.net

THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 4 KID S FISHING DAY - MAY 5, 2018 By: Craig Adams It s here again. Come and enjoy one of the best days of the year. All the fun will be happening on May 5, 2018, at the Air Force Resort on Clear Lake. What could be more fun than helping children between the ages of 5 thru 14 catch fish? You will be helping to bait hooks, (in some cases even hook the fish), and land the finny friends. The fun will start at 7:00 AM when we meet at the resort to check in and pass out fishing rods and reels. The kids get to keep these. The kids fish in shifts so there are between 75 and 100 people fishing at one time. Each child can catch up to three fish; they are guaranteed a minimum of one fish so no one gets skunked. At the end of the day, usually around 3:00 PM, the net pens are taken down and the remaining fish are released into the lake. Volunteers are need all day long, but you do not have to stay all day. If you want to donate a few hours in the morning, or a few hours in the afternoon, that is your choice. It is always appreciated if a few volunteers stay around to help take down the net pens. And as a bonus you could do a little fishing afterwards. Any questions? Please contact me, Craig Adams, at (509) or sign up at the next meeting and I will contact you. ROD BUILDING FOR KID S FISHING DAY Fishing rod assembly for Kid s Fishing Day will be on April 22, 2018, at the Wildlife Office just South of East Francis Avenue on North Market Street. The fun will start at 6:00 PM and last approximately 2 hours. If you are interested in helping with this endeavor, just show up and enjoy working with people who want to support both fishing and getting others involved in the sport. If you have questions please contact Craig Adams, (509) , or craiga49@hotmail.com. Casting instructors needed. TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM By: Claude Kistler Your Spokane Fly Fishers Club is again partnering with the local Trout Unlimited Club and will be teaching fly casting to students involved in Trout in the Classroom field trips. Three to four casting instructors are needed for each activity as follows: April 26th May 4th May 16th May 17th May 18th May 25th Medical Lake Liberty Lake Liberty Lake Bear Lake Medical Lake Medical Lake The day is typically 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM with lunch included. On May 23rd, in conjunction with the Williams Lake afternoon to early evening outing, Judy Kaufman is offering an intermediate skill level On-The-Lake fishing clinic and on July 7th, Kurt Tempel is hosting a North Fork of the Coeur d Alene River fishing clinic. We're offering 15 spots for the Coeur d Alene River clinic. For the Williams Lake clinic, the number of spots is dependent on the number of available instructors and the number of participants will be first come, first served. We re offering each of these two events to SFF members and students in this year s Fly Fishing School. Fishermen will fish with a coach where they will learn to read the water, select the appropriate fly and then properly cast to trout. All fishermen will need a valid state fishing license and suitable fishing gear (watercraft for the lake clinic). To make this work, we'll need 15 volunteers for the Coeur d Alene clinic who will spend the entire day coaching and instructing their fishing partner in all aspects of fishing as discussed above. For the Williams Lake clinic, we will need 10 instructors who will spend the late afternoon/early evening coaching and instructing their fishing partner in finding fish, determining the fish food, fly selection and fly presentation. If you are interested in helping as a coach contact Kurt Tempel at katempel@aol.com for the Coeur d Alene clinic and Judy Kaufman at jktrout1@comcast.net for the Williams Lake clinic. Likewise, SFF members should also contact Kurt Tempel or Judy Kaufman to confirm their positions for these two clinics.

THE BARBLESS FLYER Page WASHINGTON FLY FISHING FAIR MAY 4TH AND 5TH, 2018 Submitted By: Rick Newman, FFI Liaison This is the12th annual fair and the result of the generous support of many talented fly tyers, casters and fly fishers devoted to our sport and to conservation and education. This year the Fair will be on Friday and Saturday, May 4th and 5th. Meet us at the Kittitas County Fairgrounds in Ellensburg. There are camping spots available. Visit the web site for details: 5th2018/. There are free seminars and workshops. Space in some will be limited sign up early to reserve your spot. This year we will have classes on dying fly tying materials on both days. The casting workshops will be done with many of the talented casting instructors in the area. We offer amazingly talented fly tyers so come watch and learn. We hope have about 100 tyers for you to see. The list will be updated as they sign up. Casting demos throughout the show and a free Casting Challenge Course at the Park. On Saturday afternoon there will be a competition. It s also free and there are some great prizes. If you need help with your casting, we offer private lessons with a casting instructor. Cost is cheap for a one on one lesson. Sign up online or if space is available at the Fair. Visit the vendors and partners in the main room. A list will be available soon. See wscffi.org/fly-fishing-fair-may-4th-and-5th2018/ for further details. While we encourage everyone to have a great time, this event is our only fund raiser and our major source of funds to support education and conservation events in the coming year. In the past four years, we have donated over $13,000 to conservation and education activities. In addition, there was another $4,500 in funds from the IFFF that was distributed to conservation activities. We THANK everyone who has attended our Fair in the past for your support. Without your support we would not have be able to provide this help. We encourage you to attend and participate in our auction and raffles, so we can continue. On Friday evening we have our awards banquet. The evening will start with a no host bar followed by dinner, council awards and our live auction. Please register and join us. This event does not go off without the help of a lot of volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me. On Thursday evening we hold a dinner for our volunteers and vendors to thank them for their support because without them this event would not be possible. I hope to see you there. Carl Johnson, President, Washington State Council of Fly Fishers International

THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 9 BOOK OF THE MONTH BY: Larry Ray A Hearty Thank You. Before proceeding, I want to offer a hearty thank you! to Mike Melmoth for his recent donation of over twenty volumes to the SFF Club Library! They will provide grist for some upcoming reviews and, more importantly, some wonderful reading for our membership. Thanks again, Mike! A modern English Master with a Familiar Name. The first time you saw the Goddard Caddis pattern, did you marvel at the obvious caddis silhouette? Puzzle over how it could be cut out of spun deer hair? Wonder at the identity of the fly s namesake? Well, the fact is this pattern was developed by a British fly angler and innovator of great renown across the pond, as well as here in America. One of the volumes that came with the donation mentioned above is A Fly Fisher s Reflections, a collection of many articles published mostly in Europe by John Goddard from the 1960 s through the century s turn. Each chapter deals with some sort of discovery and innovation by this absolute master of fly fishing detail. I didn t become aware of chironomid fishing until the late 80s or early 90s. Goddard s first chapter on chironomid fishing recalls his efforts devising and fishing flies for this purpose in 1968! Especially fascinating are the methods he devised for fishing chironomid pupae imitations in the surface film. He first did this by tying them on straight-eyed hooks (i.e., eyes neither bent upward or downward), then simply suspending 3 of them along a well-greased leader, tipped by a large floating sedge. They were not suspended with droppers; rather, they were simply strung along the at intervals with blood knots tied to either side to minimize their drift up or down the leader. (By the way, the British refer to chironomid fishing as buzzer fishing, and chironomids as buzzers. If you have ever listened to the midge hatch on Lake Lenice or Nunnally, back when they had truly great chironomid hatches, you will understand.) Similar descriptions of Goddard s development of sedges (caddis), mayflies, winged midges, and some terrestrials, are found in this collection. Particularly interesting is the chapter on snail rises (when fresh water snails actually rise to the surface, in apparent search for oxygen, and provide a hatch of sorts for trout). A pattern is even provided. I ve never seen reference to this in any American work Both the patterns themselves and the methods evolved for fishing them are well described, usually in fascinating detail. Recipes are provided as well but, surprisingly, can be rather clipped. Stories of angling experimentation and resulting successes are provided throughout. Believing that to cast without actually targeting an individual fish is angling of a lower order, he identifies the fish to which he wants to cast and proceeds accordingly. Aside from fishing damsel nymphs just under and along the surface film, you will find no discussion of general casting and retrieving here. Nor, descriptions of general attractor patterns and their use. Goddard s style reflects a gentle perfectionist who is not oppressively so. His prose is correct, if simple, very articulate English, which makes for very enjoyable reading. Goddard expanded his fishing to virtually all parts of the globe (including the USA), saltwater and fresh, and related stories are contained in this volume. They are as enjoyable as those already described. This review is limited to the trout fly evolution and fishing method portion for purposes of brevity. Lefty Kreh, who wrote the forward to this volume, expressed his own great admiration for Goddard s attention to detail. Once, Goddard lightly upbraided Kreh during a fishing outing for wearing a fishing shirt that was too bright a shade of green for the background foliage along the stream to be fished! When Kreh, who at first thought Goddard was kidding, later exchanged shirts for a softer tone, his fishing success that day improved markedly! And what of the Goddard Caddis (or G & H Caddis, as it is known in Britain) pedigree itself? How did it evolve? Well, as a teaser, I am going to let you, the reader, find this out for yourself. I will simply tell you it is described somewhere in the volume if you really wish to know, you will have to search for it by checking out A Fly Fisher s Reflections!
