In attendance will be the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (learn where to fish), Project Healing Waters, Fly shops, resorts, the Steelhead Coalition, tiers, Kurt Warner who is the author of children s books, and even Hillary of Trout TV will make an appearance. You will also be able to taste spirits from Dry Fly Distillery. This is a terrific educational meeting, so drop in anytime between 5 and 7 PM, meet our guests and learn. The actual meeting (program) will begin at seven. There will also be door prizes. Mike will have his Chili Dogs (so very popular last month), hot dogs and Polish sausages available between 5 and 7. FOOD DRIVE By: Dan Ferguson I decided I didn t have enough to do, so I got the hair-brained idea of doing a food drive for our extravaganza. The admission to the extravaganza will be a NON PERISHABLE food item (s). This is a great opportunity to hit Costco for those dozen packages of fruits, veggies, soups and stews. Keep half and donate the rest! I hope to bring in enough food to need three men and a strong boy to load the stuff into my truck. SALE! OPPORTUNITY TO BUY FLY TYING MATERIALS, FLY FISHING ACESSORIES AND STUFF By: Judy Kaufman All kinds of items from the Alice Deaver Estate will be on sale. Grab Bags will be filled with goodies at a reasonable price. As an example, there will be a fly storage box with many compartments (similar to those found in fly shops) that must be sold. It won t fit in a grab bag! Cash and checks accepted, please no credit cards. All money raised goes to fund conservation projects. 2 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 2 PREZ SEZ By: Kurt Tempel Well it happened! Spring is really here. I know this because I have been out on our local lakes and creeks catching fish! It s wonderful! Hopefully, you share the same sentiments. The lake waters are still cold and we can expect our big streams to get blown out from the pending snow melt but I m ok with that. This is my favorite time of the year. We owe a huge thanks to Dan Ferguson and his crew of experts for successfully executing another great Conservation and Education Raffle. Comments from the peanut gallery mentioned it was the best run event in quite a few years. Many thanks to all the donors, contributors, and volunteers who made this possible. As you all know, we use the funds from this event to support local area conservation efforts and our fishing and education classes. We couldn t do this without your support. Next month we have our Extravaganza. Mike Fortney s been working hard to make this a world-class event. You will not want to miss it. Mike s got a lot of people coming from numerous parts of our community to talk to us plus we ll get an update on the current trout stocking numbers for the year. This should be a great event. Our fishing school is in full swing with almost 80 new students that s almost 80 new members. Wow our club continues to grow and grow. Thanks to Mike Berube, we hear nothing but great things from the students about the class and material. Mike s initiated a mentor program this year for the students thanks to all of you who have agreed to help out. Please take a few moments during the next meeting to say hi to our new members better yet, offer to take them fishing and show them the practical side of our fishing curriculum. I m excited and ready for more warm weather. Hope to see you on some local water real soon. Now get out there and go fishing! Space constrictions dictate that I will not list all the names, but we hope to see many new faces at our April meeting, ready to engage in everything great about fly fishing! 3 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 3 CONSERVATION CORNER By: Dan Ferguson CONSERVATION RAFFLE REPORT I want to thank everyone who helped make the raffle a success this year. Without Mike Keagan s and Linda Howe s experience, I don t think I could have pulled it off. There were many who lent their help this year including Jo Gooley, Carolyn Sells, Carla Ferguson, Brian Durheim, Celine Olgeirsson and a few I m sure I missed. I can t forget my runners and the many members who assisted in putting the room back to order after the raffle. Your help was greatly appreciated. I also want to thank our generous donors, especially Silverbow Fly Shop and Cantrell Outfitters for the donated trips. A few folks warrant my personal thanks for their contributions. Forrest Looney, a longtime member, donated rods from his collection as he s getting up there in years and isn t able to use them any longer as well as his Fly Fisher of the Year plate and a George Grant Fly Plate. Tom Anderson kept items coming on the pretense of cleaning out his closet, must be a hell of a closet! We raised nearly $4000 for our conservation and education programs that include Trout in the Classroom, Kids Fishing Day, Water Resources Day (more kids!), work with the WDF&W and Forest Service. We also help fund special education programs for a Youth Fly Fishing Camp, Eagle Scout Projects, Casting for Recovery and seminars and workshops for club members continuing education. WEST MEDICAL LAKE AERATOR PROJECT The club along with the IEFFC is helping to purchase/install a new aerator at the north end of W Medical Lake. There will be opportunities for some hands on help with this in the near future. More details will follow. TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM The trout in the class room release days are May 9 and 10 at Bear Lake and Liberty Lakes respectively. We re going to need 6-8 volunteers each day from 9-3 to help the kids with casting and rod re-building. Please drop me a line or call if you re able to help either day. sffishers@comcast.net

4 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 4 KIDS FISHING DAY - MAY 4TH By: Dan Ferguson Kids fishing will be held at the USAF Clear Lake Recreation Area on May 4 this year. This is a fun event where we help with groups of a couple hundred kids coming through every 45 minutes baiting hooks and untangling lines! Hours of entertainment!! In addition to the day event, we re looking for help assembling rods at the Wildlife Council building, April 3 from 6-9. Sign up to be part of this active, fun experience at the April meeting or contact Dan at sffishers@comcast.net or call him at RAFFLE BOARD By: Dan Ferguson Many will remember our raffle board last year for the Sage rod/reel combo we had on a raffle board. Thanks to a generous donation by Tom Anderson, we ll be doing this again. We ll have a 7/8 Loomis Spey rod with a reel for a $5 square price. 100 squares. Proceeds will go towards purchasing door prizes for our meetings. Look for the board starting at the April meeting. REMINDERS ABOUT TWO CONTINUING FISHING EDUCATION PROGRAMS By: Judy Kaufman There is still time to sign up and space available in the Lake Aquatic Entomology and Fish Food class. The class will be presented by Bob Newman Tuesday evening, April 16, 7:00 P M at the Wildlife Council Building, 6116N Market St., cost $2 - $5. Spey Casting Instruction taught by Lee Davidson, who is a FFF master caster instructor and Spey Casting champion is full. There are still members who have not paid. If those signed up have not contacted me or paid by the Extravaganza their spots will become available. A waiting list will be started. The classes are Friday, Saturday and Sunday July 19, 20 and 21. The cost of the class is $35. The classes are four hours and each class has four students. You may sign up for the waiting list at the Extravaganza or call Judy NEW PROGRAM RIVER AQUATIC ENTOMOLOGY By: Judy Kaufman This is a new class that is in the planning stage. It is anticipated the class will be in early June. Bob Newman will present it. The class may involve a field trip to the North Fork of the Coeur d Alene River to sample and collect aquatic insects. If you are interested you may sign up at the Extravaganza.

5 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 5 BITTERROOT RIVER OUTING - APRIL 20TH - CANCELLED McGINNIS LAKE OUTING - APRIL 20/21 Host: Dan Wells It s time to hit McGinnis Lake on the Colville Indian Reservation for BIG Brook Trout! Buffalo Lake is also close by with Brookies, Rainbows and kokanee. Chironomids and Leech patterns are best for the Brookies. Patterns to bring: Leeches in colors black, brown and maroon sizes 8-10; Water Boatman size 16; Chironomids and Blood Worms. Getting there is easy. Head west on US 2 to Wilbur, turn north on Hwy 21 (for a very short time) then north on Hwy 174 to Coulee Dam. Find Hwy155 and take it North toward Omak; turn right on Peter Dan Creek just past Elmer City. In approximately 3 miles, turn left on Buffalo Lake Road which turns into a dirt road that takes you to Reynold s Resort (509) ). They have accommodations for tents and RV s they also have cabins. Luxurious motels can be found in Coulee City. Saturday night potluck awaits the hungry at the Reynold s Resort campground. We ll contact everyone that signed-up about a week before the event to get a consensus on a good time for dinner. I ll cook steaks for everyone (provided by the club) and the members can bring some type of side dish to share. One Day Permit $10.00 Three Day Permit $20.00 Seven Day Permit $30.00 WILLIAMS LAKE OUTING - MAY 8TH Host: Bill Lundin Williams Lake is an excellent lake for the beginning fly fisherman new to lake fishing, and for the experienced fly fishers who may want to try out their new patterns they've tied over the winter. The lake is stocked heavily each spring, which improves the odds for success. Williams Lake is located South of Cheney. To get there, take the Cheney exit off I-90. Follow through town to Mullinix Road, which is about one mile west of Cheney. Turn left (South) on Mullinix Road to Williams Lake Road. The lake is about 10+ miles from Cheney. Turn left (East) and look for the sign (which may be partially hidden by a tree) for the public launch. Take that road to the parking and launch area. The outing starts at 3 PM. A boat or some type of float is needed to fish this lake. Recommended flies are chironomids, wooly buggers, Olive Willys, bionic worms, still water nymphs, etc.

6 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 6 CLEAR LAKE OUTING - MAY 11TH Host: Mike Berube This outing will be conducted in conjunction with the Annual Awards Picnic and will be very informal. The outing will take place at the USAF Clear Lake Recreation Area. We can fish for a couple of hours prior to the picnic. I'll be there at 8 AM, we can fish until the picnic starts at 11 AM. There is a boat launch there if you have a boat or you can launch your pontoon boat/float tube right at the beach area at the main office pavilion. The WDFW Spokane Kids Fishing Day will be held here the week prior so the likelihood of lots of fish in this area will be great. Standard lake patterns will work: Stillwater Nymphs, Wooly Buggers, Carey Specials, Six Packs, and Olive Willys should do the trick. Directions: East or West bound on I-90, take Exit 264 (Cheney/ Medical Lakes Exit) and go North. Turn Right onto Clear Lake Road on the North side of I-90. Clear Lake Recreation Area is clearly marked at the corner of Clear Lake and Salnave Rd. The Recreation Area is then just a short distance down Clear Lake Road on the Left. From Fairchild AFB, take Hwy 2 West to Brooks Rd and turn left toward Medical Lakes, right at the stop sign in Medical Lakes, Left on Clear Lake and travel about 1 mile to Clear Lake on your right. ONE FLY CONTEST - MAY 18 TH - BADGER LAKE Hosts: Bill & Leona Strate Our annual One Fly Contest will be held once again at Badger Lake on Saturday, May 18 th. You fish with just one fly (barbless) between 10am and 1:00pm and catch and release as many as you can. Keep track of the number of fish caught and the size if you land a larger one. If you break off the fly or change it out, your score stops at that point. Registration begins at 9:30am and costs $5 per member or $10 per family. We meet right after the fishing for a BBQ lunch (burgers, dogs, beans, etc.) and hand out prizes for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place, and the largest fish! To get there follow these directions (or use your GPS): Take I-90 west to the Cheney Exit. Go through town and turn left on South Cheney Plaza Road. Follow the road for 8 10 miles until you get to Williams Lake Rd and turn right. Follow the road until you see South Badger Lake Rd, turn right again. You ll see the lake on your right, follow the road until you see the public access/boat ramp sign on your right. Turn right down the dirt road and you soon be at the access area. The rest rooms will be on your right when you get to the upper parking area, this is a good time for a pit stop before you head down to the lake. This is always a fun outing.

7 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 7 Z LAKE OUTING - MAY 22ND Host: Ray Baker Z Lake is located in the Swanson Lakes Wildlife Area. Take highway 2 toward Creston Wa. A rest area will be on the left. Take the next road on the left which is Telford Road. This is a good single lane road. Approximately 7 miles on the left is the main parking area. The area with the locked gate is BLM land. Swanson Lakes Area is to the left. Once you are walking inside the Swanson Lakes Area, angle to the southwest and when you reach the top of the hill, a windmill tower minus the blades should be visible. This area near the middle of the lake is the deepest. The maximum depth is around 16 feet. There is normally wind at the lake. Alternate route to the Northern End: Walk through the small BLM gate and take the road to the top of the hill and the lake should be on your left. This northern part of the lake is shallow and it could be too weedy for fishing and it would require walking towards the center of the lake. Alternate route to the South end of the lake: If you drive about a mile past that main parking lot, there is a locked gate on the right.. If you have a handicap permit from Washington State Wildlife Department, a key would be available and you could drive to the lake. Otherwise, you have to walk in taking about a half hour. The parking at the south gate is limited but a few people have parked and walked to the lake This lake was evaluated by EWU quite a few years ago and there is an abundance of food for the fish. The fly patterns to use would be nymphs, chironomids, and wooly buggers. I would recommend at least a 3X leader and tippet. A floating and preferably slow-sinking line would be appropriate. If you choose to use something lighter than 3X, be sure you have enough tippet as the fish fight extremely hard. There are no boat ramps and no restrooms but there is a lot of sagebrush. If you have trouble walking, make sure to take someone along who walks better than you as the area is remote. There aren t very many houses and not much road traffic. The lake is not named on maps but if you find Whitaker Lake, Z lake is to the west. I have been informed they very seldom see rattlesnakes in this area. COFFEEPOT OUTING REPORT Hosted by: Dan Wells Written by: Mike Berube The SFF club had a great first outing of the year yesterday. We, about 12 of us, hit Coffee Pot lake around 9 AM and fished to mid afternoon. The weather was typical for this outing, high 40s, cloudy and windy. The rain which held off all day, could have made it miserable. Everyone caught fish. Nice fat rainbows to 21 (mine Kurt Temple had the numbers though) were caught. Kurt and I concentrated our efforts to the shoreline down by the opening to the far end. We couldn't get through, there was only about a 5-6 inches trickling through a 4' wide opening. KT and I had 11 to hand with another 7-8 long distance releases. Not real fast and furious but it kept us moving. They were taken on purple, black, maroon bunny leeches, olive, purple, black woolly buggers. Most were taken trolling or casting and stripping out of the boat but we had some luck casting from shore to cruisers on the north side of the opening to the far/upper end. Judy Kaufman was in her pontoon boat and stayed in the first bay across from the launch concentrating her fishing between the cabin and inlet stream She caught several nice fish, after a quick throat pump revealed immature damsel nymphs and scuds she switched to a size 14 articulated/red bead/pale olive damsel nymph pattern and hooked some nice rainbows. And a 20 largemouth!

9 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 9 BEGINNING FLY TYING REPORT By: Betty Smith -Lambert The results are in! Six people have completed the Beginning Fly Tying Class and have passed the graduation test which was to tie the Stimulator. People who ask for donation flies take note!! These people have been added to the know how to tie list. This year s class was composed of (in the order that they signed up) Alan Boehler, Peter Mokry, Gary West, Kim Brewer, Harold Waters and Tom Long. Each of them found fly tying to have special difficulties just for them but had the stick to it attitude that leads to success. They progressed from putting a hook into a vice and thread on the hook to putting beads on hooks, and taught me a new way to control beads. Each has broken and recovered from broken thread, and found that forgetting to put a material on at the instructed position can usually be repaired. They packed hair and spread it all over the room and themselves. I even inflected them with two methods of dubbing, a method that is often considered on of the most difficult techniques of fly tying. I would be remiss if I did not mention those that helped me. Bob Mielbrecht revised and printed the manuals as well as taught the introduction to tying. I don t think that I could have done as good a job at either as I am not a computer person nor do I convey the elements of beginning tying as well as Bob. Ed Chezem was able to fill in on short notice and gave his special talents to our instructions. Beginning Fly Tying would not be possible without Mary Kovatch. She helps with the problems the students create for themselves and does the practical lectures on well, how does one fish this fly?. Mary, I hope that you live and fish so long that you have to come back for that second half hide of muskrat Washington Fly Fishing Fair May 3-4 Ellensburg Wa This is our seventh annual event and the result of the generous support of many talented fly tiers, casters and fly fishers devoted to our sport and to conservation and education. 10 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 10 BOOK OF THE MONTH Larry Ray (This feature will probably appear in each issue of the Barbless Flier, space permitting, discussing books held in the SFFC s library and available to members via lending.) Fishing Art and Prose: The works of James Prosek. TROUT: An Illustrated History, by James Prosek, contains watercolor portraits of every trout native to North America, as well as the Brown trout and the Atlantic salmon. While watercolor may not seem suited to the recording of scientific detail, close examination shows that, even with the running, merging brush strokes typical of that medium, Prosek still masterfully captures the uniqueness of each species in wonderful refinement. The Kamloops rainbow and the lake trout have the swollen bellies often displayed by larger members of these species. The Apache trout has the compressed look typical of the trout which contains the fewest vertebrae of any. The Brook trout s blocky, angular head with its long maxillary, as well as the classic squared tail and wonderful greens, oranges, yellows, pinks, and blues, are done to perfection. Other char shown in spawning dress display the typical kypes. Prosek s depictions of the southwestern species, as well as the cutthroats, seem a bit more advanced. It s as though he was refining his work as he traced his subjects westward. Most curious is the rendition of the Humper Lake Trout, one of the laker subspecies that live, and even spawn, in the depths of Lake Superior. The profuse, light spots on the uniformly black background, along with the enlarged fins, convey an almost sinister beauty. Prosek s renditions are such that no less than both The LA Times and The NY Times have labeled him the Audubon of the Fishing World. This book is also a scientific and historical work with each picture accompanied by a fascinating, sometimes heart-tugging briefing. Descriptions of the fates of the Yellowfin Cutthroat of Colorado and the Silver Trout of New Hampshire, both extinct, read as haunting memorials. Prosek is nothing if not a prodigy. He completed TROUT in 1996 when he was but 19 years old, and quickly followed with Joe and Me. All before he had graduated from Yale! Prodigious genius, however, can carry troublesome traits: Prosek freely describes the vicarious, youthful thrill he realized from poaching. The inspiration for Joe and Me was a relationship formed with a game warden who caught Prosek fishing in closed reservoir waters. I won t spoil the reading for you by describing the plot and how young James paid for that indiscretion. I will tell you the author writes in a smooth, simple, yet evocative manner that should be the envy of many striving to establish writing styles. But the illustrations really reveal Prosek at his best. Freed from the restrictive, scientific portrait-style of his first work, he is able to display brookies (they have to be is favorite subject) against the background colors of New England the browns and yellows of fallen sugar maple leaves, or the subtle greens and grays of tree bark. Trout shown in larger scenes still show enough telltale traits to allow identification. There are paintings of landscapes where he and his pals dig clams and ice fish, as well as some sporting still-lifes. Prosek combines the skills of outdoor artist and writer as well as anyone I have found. Since publishing the two volumes noted, he has gone on to write many more, including Early Love of Brook Trout (2000) and Trout of the World (2003).
