Spokane Fly Fishers September, 2009 GENERAL MEETING & DEMONSTRATION DEMONSTRATION - 3PM TO 5:30 PM MEETING:SEPTEMBER 9, PM SPEAKER: SKIP MORRIS Fishing the Surface of a Trout Lake Skip Morris is among the mostprolific fly-fishing and fly-tying authors alive--his name is known to anglers around the world. He has written ten books, including the established standard beginning fly tier's volume Fly Tying Made Clear and Simple, and The Art of Tying the Bass Fly, Morris & Chan on Fly Fishing Trout Lakes (with lake-fishing guru Brian Chan), Concise Handbook of Fly Tying, and Western River Hatches. His six videos range from instruction for tying nymphs, to tying bass flies, to tying and fishing flies for sea-run cutthroat trout. Skip has published over 200 articles in magazines from Fly Fisherman to American Angler. For three years he was among the hosts of the "Fly-Fish Television Magazine" show. As a speaker and clinician, Skip is well-known as an entertaining, concise, and knowledgeable presenter, with a sly sense of humor and an easygoing manner that draws in the audience. Here are just a few of the places in which he has spoken: Los Angeles, Toronto, Michigan, Stockholm, Texas, Edmonton, Alabama. Skip has graciously agreed to hold a Fly Tying Demonstration the day of the meeting: FLY TYING DEMONSTRATION Tying and Fishing Flies for Trout Lakes SEPTEMBER 9TH - 3:00 PM TO 5:30 PM Attend, if you can, and pick up some tips from an expert fly tyer. This is free and open to the public so bring friends. Hot dogs and Polish sausage with chips and drinks will be available from 5:30 to 6:45. 2 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 2 PREZ SEZ By Mike Melmoth I ve heard the fishing has been pretty good this year. Sorry I couldn t join you on the outings. I d like to thank all of the hosts for a job well done. I ve gotten good reports on all of the outings so far. It s also great to see new names on the list of hosts. September is here and with it an outstanding speaker and fly tying demonstration. Skip Morris will be doing the honors on the 9 th for us. His Tying and Fishing Flies for Trout Lakes Clinic will be held Wednesday 9 Sept. from 3:00-5:30 PM and will be open to the public so invite all the friends you want. This should be a great opportunity to attract new members as well as build more good will in the community fishers. The board has lined up a good year for your enjoyment and now will be mixing with you looking for volunteers to chair committees and help with events. As usual, the more things you want to do the more member participation becomes a necessity. Nuff said. Once again a fair number of our members are going to be going to the Missouri and Yellowstone outings Sept. so there may be more space than most months at this meeting, let s fill it up with guests. Friends and neighbors not fly fishers? Now is the time to introduce them to the best hobby/ sport/ obsession going. See you on the 9 th, second Wednesday of the month, for our first meeting of the 2009/2010 year. PROJECT HEALING WATERS AND ROLLIN ON THE RIVER REPORT By: Tim Reed Project Healing Waters has been on hold for the summer and will resume in late September of early October. If you have any interest in participating please call Tim Reed at On another note, the Veterans Wheelchair games came to Spokane. Swimmers, weightlifters and other contestants went fly fishing with volunteers from our club. The weather was hot and the fishing was tough at our local lakes. However, volunteers Dan Wight, Jeff Voight, Fred Howe, Mike Berube, Kurt Tempel and Judy Kauffman were able to help the new fly fishermen catch fish. The evidence, of course, is the picture of Tom, a paraplegic from Pennsylvania with his first cutthroat throat. -- Spokane Fly Fishers wishes a speedy recovery for long time member, Don Chinn, who is now at Sacred Heart Hospital following a stroke.
THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 3 ATTENTION! ATTENTION! ATTENTION! SPOKANE RIVER OUTING CHANGE By: Judy Kaufman The Spokane River outing has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 3. We will meet at the corner of Ash and Water Street at 8:00 A.M. As planned before, there will be a couple of float options and walk and wade opportunities. Cancellation was due to low river flow making floating hazardous. Questions: Call Tim Reed or Judy Kaufman CLARK FORK OUTING OCTOBER 10TH & 11TH Hosts: Jim and Jo Gooley It was reported in the Spokesman Review that the Clark Fork had the best August Fishing in fifteen years - perhaps the good fishing will continue into October when the club has their Fall Clark Fork Outing. At the very least we can hope for better weather than the last several times the Club has planned an outing on the Clark Fork! On SATURDAY morning we will gather at 8:30 - Mountain Time - at Joe Cantrell's fly shop for coffee and rolls. Plans for the day will be made then as well - like what flies the fish are taking (usually ones that you don't have!), what float would be best for the day and what restaurant to go to for dinner that evening! On SUNDAY morning we will gather at Clark Fork Trout and Tackle (Brooks & Jackie's) - again at 8:30. Remember that Sloway Camp Ground is closed in October but the Camp Ground above Superior has been open in the past. Joe Cantrell might have some rooms available if you call ahead The local number for Super 8 Motel in St Regis is Hope you will be able to join us for a great outing on the Clark Fork in October! If you have any questions call Jim & Jo at AMBER LAKE OUTING - OCTOBER 11TH - 10 AM Host: Geno Baril Take I-90 west to the Cheney Exit. Go completely through town and then left on Mullinix Road (opposite the funeral home on the right side of the road). Continue on Mullinix for about 10 miles and you ll find Pine Springs Road. Turn right and stay on Pine Springs until you find a small Amber Lake sign where you will turn left and follow the dirt road to the parking lot. If you miss the Pine Springs turn, continue on Mullinix for about a half mile and then turn right on the next paved road. It will join up with Pine Springs and you ll be back on track. You can drive down the hill to unload, but you have to park in the lot on top. That s a good time for a pit stop before you head back down to the lake. This is one of the better chironomids lakes in the area. Contact our host Geno Baril at if you have any questions.
THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 4 ST JOE OUTING REPORT AND MORE By: Dan Ferguson A big thank you goes out to the Ross s for hosting another successful outing the weekend of August 7 th, 8 th and 9 th. There were at least 25 club members attending, with Clara and Art preparing both a Saturday morning breakfast and a great pulled pork dinner for the evening meal. Both meals were well assisted by Linda and Carla. Thanks to all who provided their favorite side dishes. As is typical, there were too many salads and too few desserts (my opinion, anyway). I think nearly everyone had better than average fishing with some outshining others. Attractor patterns, Terrestrials and Mayfly s did well. Not too many Caddis for some reason. Carla and I stayed on for the remainder of the week with my sister, her husband and our grandson. I think it rained 8 out of the 11 days we camped! It is quite a chore getting everything clean and dry. LOCHSA OUTING REPORT By Fred Howe There were eleven or twelve members who attended this outing. Those of us who went enjoyed wonderful weather (it was a little warm, though) and some great fishing. Don Tietz did a terrific job serving a gourmet breakfast with delicious huckleberry pancakes. The terrain at the Lochsa is a little challenging so access to the water was not too easy (except for mountain goats) but, everyone had a great time and I believe that everyone caught fish. NEW MEMBERS By: Mary Kovatch, Membership Chairperson The Spokane Fly Fishers extends a warm welcome to the people who joined this summer. Please welcome: Mike Roach and Steven Goodman
THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 5 CONSERVATION CORNER USFS CONSERVATION PROJECT REPORT By Mike Keegan Saturday, June 13, our work party met Karen Honeycutt in the Colville National Forest. We had a group of about 15 club members work at Calispell Creek. The main activity was fence building and repair. The group built about 300 feet of fence and repaired another 100 feet plus worked on a gate. A great barbecue followed. Thank you, Roger Bertsch, for organizing this event. Next year's plan is to work is in the Sherman Creek area doing tree planting. CONSERVATION CONSIDERATIONS By Mike Keegan On June 30, Tim Reed, Klaus Rissman, and I met with Chris Donley at the WDFW office. We discussed the aerator project for West Medical Lake. Chris will define equipment needed for this. The current system is not considered repairable. The pump needs to be defined. The total cost is estimated to be $4000 to In the future, WDFW wants to do a study of smallmouth bass upstream of Upriver Dam to the Idaho border. This would involve collecting smallmouth bass and dissecting their stomachs to assess their diet. Work will not proceed this year. SPOKANE RIVER CLEANUP SEPTEMBER 26TH By Mike Keegan The Spokane River Cleanup date has been changed to September 26. We will have a signup sheet at the September meeting or, if you are unable to attend the meeting, you may call Mike at or to mike1keegs@aol.com. This should be a fun day on the river and a chance to contribute to an important local event. If you have any questions, please call Mike Keegan at or
THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 6 ANNUAL FLY AUCTION - NOVEMBER 11TH By: Betty Smith-Lambert Remember me? I am that pest that for the last few years has button holed each and everyone about bringing flies for the November SFF Fly Auction. It is so nice to be remembered. The good news is that I am not doing the Fly Auction this year. The bad news is that the club will still need the revenue generated by the Auction. Some of you may not know that I had a heart attack in April of this year and have slowed down some. This year the club will be looking for somebody to take over the duties of the Fly Auction. I would be happy to consult and teach. I hope that your summer fishing generated many HOT FLIES. How about getting some of them tied up for the Fly Auction? It is possible that you could be a famous as Bob Mielbrecht and his Cha-Cha Leach. Anyway, this article is to remind you to start getting your flies ready for the Auction. As a major event the Fly Auction was the pet project of a deceased member, Alice Deaver. You think that I was aggressive in requesting flies - well you did not get asked by Alice. Alice used to walk around the meetings with a clip board asking for donated flies. The auctions that she prepared were highly successful in generating funds that have made our club a success. THE FLY AUCTION, WITH YOUR DONATIONS AND WINNING BIDS, SUPPORTS THE CLUB S ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR. DO YOUR PART. WILD WOMEN S WEEKEND - SEPTEMBER 26TH By Betty Smith-Lambert Calling all SFF women. We are again going to present our skills at Wild Women s Weekend at the YMCA camp on Fan Lake. A little history--this event originated when one of the mothers, while picking up her child, happened to remark it is too bad that there is no camp for women so I could have as much fun as my child had. Since then. the YMCA has sponsored a weekend just for women. I believe that this is the 12 th time that SFF women have helped at this event. The women at camp sign up for classes / events such as fly casting, fly tying, high ropes, hiking, canoe trips; basket weaving; knitting; drum meditation, or yoga. There are three classes per day. The camp is held the last weekend of September which this year is the 25 th, 26 th and 27 th. SFF will present on Saturday the 26 th. We generally carpool up to the lake and eat both breakfast and lunch with the people at the camp. Any women interested in this event can call me at If you don t talk to me directly - leave a message and I will return your call.

This is a 5 night / 4 day trip for two valued at $6300! It includes a $1000 in travel dollars. From Spokane this could put up to $800 in your pocket. Pure profit! This alone would make buying a ticket for $20 worthwhile. WAIT! There s more! Each council winner will be entered into a drawing for a Cinco Rios Lodge Fishing trip in Chile!
