1 Spokane Fly Fishers Summer, 2011 PREZ SEZ By: Mike Berube Hello Spokane Fly Fishers! I m happy to say that I ll be returning as your President for the upcoming year. I d like to thank the Nominating Committee for nominating me for the position of President of our club and thank the members for their vote of confidence in me. We had a really good year and I know the next board will be just as successful. I d also like to thank the committee for nominating and club members for approving the great board we have in place for Our board will consist of Kurt Tempel VP, Sherrie Patano - Secretary, Gale Allen Treasurer, Brad Thompson, Dan Wight, and Klaus Rissmann Board Positions 1-3 respectively. My phone s been ringing off the hook with club members volunteering to be Sgt at Arms. As soon as a decision is made on that I ll let everyone know who it is. I can t forget to mention Fred Howe, since we have no out-going president to serve as Past President I had to look for one. Fred graciously agreed to come out of retirement and assume that position. Thanks Fred, I owe you one. To all of the outgoing board member I encourage you to stay active with the club activities. Thanks for your work and efforts this past year. Thanks to those of you who recommended we change up the style of event we usually have for the awards banquet. The picnic was a big hit! For those of you who attended the Awards Picnic out at the Air Force recreation area at Clear Lake you ll agree that this facility is top notch and we were lucky to have it there. Look for Kurt s write up on the event in this Barbless. I took a look the other day at our outings schedule, wow! What a great job the outings team did putting the schedule together. I encourage you to sign up and enjoy the camaraderie at these events. So, like I said last year, whether you are casting small dries for Cuts on the St Joe, Steelheading or Smallie fishing on the Grand Ronde, going after the huge rainbows at Georgetown Lake, or taking a nice leisurely float down the Spokane River in search of big rainbows, have a safe and enjoyable season. It s not too late to sign up for an outing. Give me, or any board Member, a call and we ll put you in touch with the outing host. Hopefully we ll see you out at some of the outings. 2 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 2 KIDS FISHING DAY REPORT Saturday, May 7, 2011 By: Judy Kaufman The day started out cold, windy and raining. As I drove to the Iron Skillet at six o clock, I thought lots of members might be tempted to skip breakfast and possibly Kids Fishing as well. Wrong, Wrong, Wrong! Twenty members showed for breakfast plus another ten to help with the event. Close to nine hundred kids along with families and friends also braved the elements and Kids Fishing was a success. The fish weren t as eager as in years past to be caught. The kids and volunteers had to work this year to catch the three fish limit that only added to the excitement! Those fishing from the dock seemed to catch most of the big brood fish. Tim Reed who was helping on the far end of the beach assisted a young boy with an extreme hair do catch one of the big ones. Lenny Hahn s (enforcement officer, poaching patrol) son also landed a dandy. Lenny had lots of family there and it got very exciting. Thanks to all that helped, whether you put together equipment, handed out shirts, organized those waiting in line for their turn or helped bait the hooks, the kids and their families appreciate your work. See you next year. ANNUAL AWARDS EVENT REPORT By: Kurt Tempel Our end of year Annual Awards Event was held at Clear Lake on May 14th. What a wonderful turnout of SFF member and their families. Even the weather cooperated with a few breezy moments and mostly sunny skies. We had approximately 50 people attend our event. Mike Berube got the crowd warmed up with his casting competition events and ended up winning the casting accuracy contest. Fred Howe took the honors of being the longest distance caster from the brave participants. We enjoyed a wonderful selection of foods along with hamburgers and hotdogs perfectly prepared by Gail Allen and his lovely wife, Cheryl. Kurt Tempel was awarded the Fly Fisherman of The Year Award for all of the work he has done over the past few years for the club, Don Tietz won the Mover and Shaker Award in recognition of his involvement with the Outings Committee and the pontoon classes, and Mike Keegan won the Conservation Award based on his dedication and work for our conservation efforts. The new board of officers for the upcoming year were introduced to the group. The names of the board members can be found on page one, both in the listing and in the Prez Sez. They were not all available to attend the awards banquet. Those that were are pictured here. They are: Fred Howe, Gale Allen, Mike Berube, Kurt Tempel and Sherrie Patano. Mike offered thanks to those who assisted him for the current year and noted he was looking forward to working with the new officers soon. 3 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 3 CONSERVATION CORNER By: Mike Keegan FISH-IN-CLASSROOMS On April 28, rainbow trout that were raised by students in classroom tanks, were released into Liberty Lake. Students from Tekoa, Loon Lake, and Davenport were participants. Each student was given a fish in a clear plastic cup. They went to the shoreline and released the fish. About 100 students participated. After the release, clinics on several topics related to fish and ecology were conducted. Ten members of our club participated in teaching fly casting to the students each of which was given a one-on-one lesson for 15 to 20 minutes. Many thanks to those who participated. Next year, it is hoped that there will be seven or more schools participating. FISH MARKING On May 2nd, members of the club helped mark 62,000 rainbow trout at the Spokane hatchery. These were about 2 to 4 inches in length. It consisted of clipping the adipose fins. These fish will be released into Curlew lake this fall and growth will be monitored by the fisheries biologists. Thanks to those who helped. COLVILLE NATIONAL FOREST CONSERVATION OUTING On Saturday June 25th, we will have our annual conservation outing on Sherman Creek at the Growden Dam site. The dam, which was a depression-era WPA project, has been demolished by the Corps of Engineers. Last year, we planted willows and aspens along the banks of the creek. With weather cooperating, a good percentage of them took root and will help with erosion control and providing shade for the fish. The site is west of Kettle Falls on the highway to Sherman Pass. Since the stream fishing season opens June 1st, we have been asked to do some fishing for get an assessment of the fishery. A 4 or 5 wt. rod is sufficient. Waders are not needed due the size of the creek. We will have a barbecue for lunch with Carla Ferguson organizing this so you know it will be very good. There is a need for 15 to 20 volunteers. Please call or Mike Keegan ( mike1keegs@aol.com) if you can help. SPOKANE RIVER CLEANUP We will be participating in the cleanup again this year. It will be held in late September or early October. Signup sheets will be available at the September club meeting. Last year we had about 12 people helping with members and folks from Fairchild. No lack of trash in the three areas worked.

4 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 4 BADGER LAKE OUTING REPORT By Mike Berube Thanks to all who made this outing a success. By my count, there were about 25 pontoon boats and watercraft on the water at one point. It was great to see lots of new faces out on the water. Hopefully everyone had a good time. There weren t a lot of fish landed but there were a lot hooked. Not sure what the problem was but everyone reported several long distance releases. The trusty Olive Willy and Damselfly Nymph patterns brought most of the hook-ups. A few fish were taken on blood worms. Bill Lundin landed the biggest at 22 inches. The weather certainly cooperated; it was about 68 degrees, sunny, with a slight breeze causing a slight chop when we hit the water. People were fishing in shorts and t-shirts, a big change from last year where the 5 braves souls who turned out for the outing had to deal with 45 degrees and a strong wind with some showers. Overall some good size fish were caught and the outing served as a good warm-up for the upcoming one fly contest on Saturday. We did have a guest fisherman. Mike Green, writer from the new online Spokane s Men s Journal magazine, fished with us and he took some pictures. Look for the article on the club to be out in their premier issue next month. GEORGETOWN LAKE OUTING JULY 8TH, 9TH AND 10TH By Gale Allen I know it may seem a bit early since the trip to Georgetown Lake is July 8, 9, 10 but reservations for a campsite need to be made soon as this campground will fill up! There are 69 sites within three loop areas. They only take reservations for loop C. Reservations need to be made through ReserveUSA. If you are a computer geek you can make reservations online beginning at this link and just following directions. The fee is $14.00 per day plus the reservation fee. Here is some reservation info: The website ( offers convenient, round-the-clock access to the Online Reservation System. You will be able to search by state or facility name and also check availability as one of the many functions available. Or, if you prefer, you can call the NRRS reservation center by dialing (toll free), to speak with one of the knowledgeable agents. There are no meals etc. planned, just a good time and maybe good fishing! Damsel Fly adults and nymphs are the fly of the day with a Goddard Caddis sometimes successful as a traveling sedge imitation. Heavy leader and tippet should be in your supplies as there are a lot of weeds and sometimes a good sized fish! KELLY CREEK OUTING - JULY 22ND TO 24TH Hosts: Lisa and John Hudson Greetings members and guests. Lisa and I are looking forward to hosting this year s outing to Kelly Creek. It is my personal favorite. After catching several 20 plus Western Cutthroat Trout my first year out of the club s fishing class I was hooked. We will be camping at the Kelly Forks Campground where the Kelly Fork Creek meets the North Fork of the Clearwater River. It has the usual forest service niceties (pit toilets, water spigots). Last year we did have a black bear in camp just about every night so be prepared for that prospect. There are two ways to the campground, one through Peirce, Idaho (which can have heavy logging truck traffic with lots of turns) or the road over from Superior, Montana. This is the way I ve always gone. This road is rough so be prepared. Make sure you fuel up in Superior before heading up the forest road. Lots of washboard areas in the road but also some fantastic scenery. The Hoodoo Pass is a great pit stop to take in the beauty of the Northwest. Last year small flies seemed to do the best but years prior it s been big hoppers and other terrestrials. We will be having a hearty breakfast that Saturday morning. This outing is always a great time and everyone catches fish. If you re new to the club and/or haven t made this outing you re missing out on one of the great fisheries of the Western US. 6 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 6 ST. JOE RIVER OUTING August 5,6,7 Hosts: Dan & Carla Ferguson Dan and Carla Ferguson will be hosting the St Joe outing this year. As we have for years now, we re planning on staying at Fly Flat campground. This is a nice medium sized Campground with 14 sites suitable for tents and small to medium sized trailers although some have CAREFULLY maneuvered larger RV s and 5th wheelers. Two really nice, well maintained outhouses and a pump with typically cloudy, but potable water. There is a chance that we won t be able to find room at Fly Flat as there are no reservations available. In this case we ll be moving to the Big Meadow 1 ½ miles from the main road. Look for the club banner. There are two ways to reach Fly Flat. The easiest and longest is via St Maries. Go through town and take the turn to Harrison/ Avery. Take a right turn in about a ½ mile. Take a very leisurely and relaxing drive past mile marker 76. Look for the turn onto the upper Joe Rd. Three miles on a one lane paved rd to the campground. Please allow time to stop at The Idaho Fly Co. in Avery for a sandwich or ice cream and pick up a few flies and such. Licenses are available across the Rd at Sheffey s store as is soda, beer, ice and pricey gas! Fill up in St. Maries. You can also take I-90 to St. Regis Mt and head over the mountain. Get gas and such in town and a fishing license at Clark Fork Trout and Tackle. Exit the freeway and take a left to the 4-way. Left again and about a mile to Little Joe Rd. Left again for 28 miles up and over, left just past mile marker 77. The 14 mile Montana side is gravel that can get a bit rough and dusty. The Joe is a very fine cutthroat fishery, with fish ranging from 8 18 inches. You ll always have great luck with Caddis patterns and also do very well as Comparaduns, Tan and Olive working well. Fish a Stimulator, Humpy or Turks Tarantula with a small Nymph dropper and swing Soft Hackles during the evening. Don t overlook Hoppers, Ants, and Bees! This is a great chance for the novice fisher, as cuts are always hungry and we will have plenty of experts available. It is a relatively easy river for wading and it should be warm enough for those who do not have fancy breathables yet. Our plan is to have an on the water clinic Saturday morning. This is a great outing to bring the non-fishing partner and the kids or grandkids. Bring the bikes, BB guns and slingshots! We plan on arriving Wednesday. Please be prepared to share camp site as we can get cozy with all the folks on this outing. Dinner Saturday evening will be BBQ Ribs with A-F bringing desserts, G-N side dishes and O-Z salads. We realize with this being a bit more remote outing that this might not work for all. Friday evening we ll have a BYOB (bring your own beef) feed. 7 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 7 KOOTENAI RIVER OUTING - AUGUST 20TH & 21ST Host: Dan Wight Directions: Take either Route 2 or 190 to Sandpoint. Head north through Bonners Ferry over the Kootenai and up the hill. At the lights, go right on 2 heading east to Troy, MT. A little over 6 miles from the Montana state line (about 24 miles from Bonners Ferry) and at the bottom of a steep hill you will find the Yak River Campground. There are two sides of the camp so look for our sign. We ll be on the East Side. We can fish the upper area that is just below the Libby Dam, as an option. It has 3 campgrounds that are just feet from the river level and are free of charge. They are run by the Corp of Engineers and are nice and sunny with boat launches at 3 places. We can discuss the options the meeting before the outing as it is in the fall after they start up again. Food: We will have a potluck dinner on Saturday night. Float Trip: You will need a drift boat or a pontoon boat. Float tubes will not work here. There are several places to wade or fish from the bank. Bring your life jackets. Flies: Elk Hair Caddis, Prince Nymphs, Black Chernobyl Ants, Pale Morning Dun, Stimulators, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Parachute Adams, emergers, rusty spinners, all forms of caddis, Bead Head Pheasant Tail, stoneflies and prince, San Juan worms, wooly buggers, ants, hoppers and tarantulas. I recommend that you use Royal Ruffs, PMDs and Hoppers. These usually work well on this river. CLARKFORK RIVER OUTING Hosts: Jim and Jo Gooley SEPTEMBER 10 th & 11 th The past five times we have hosted the Clark Fork outing we have had to cancel the trip - or should have. Hopefully this time will be different! Saturday - September 10 - we will meet at Clark Fork Trout and Tackle at 8:00 am Montana time for coffee and rolls and to plan a float for that day. For dinner that night we will gather at a restaurant for those who would like to do so. Sunday morning - September 11 - we will meet at Joe Cantrell's fly shop - again at 8:00 am to plan that day's float probably a shorter trip for those who would like to get an earlier start home. We will also have coffee and there should be rolls left over from Saturday! Hopper patterns could still be effective for this time of year. Depending on the weather Blue Wing Olives as well as Parachute Adams could be considered. Nymph patterns should also be included in your fly box! The Sloway campground is scheduled to close after Labor Day but sometimes it stays open a bit longer depending on the weather. We should know the status of that campground by the time we contact folks about the trip. 8 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 8 MISSSOURI RIVER OUTING - SEPTEMBER 16 THROUGH 18, 2011 Host: Carolyn Sells This is primarily a float trip. To get to Craig, Montana, go east on I90. Just passed Missoula, take Hwy 200 over Rodgers Pass to Hwy 287 to Wolf Creek, travel north on Hwy 15, 11 miles to Craig (Exit 234). Camping - Most of us will be camping out at Stickney Creek CG. Bring your earplugs if you planning to campout, it s just off the freeway so it s a little noisy. To get to the campground, across the bridge at Craig, turn north and travel about 4 ½ miles on the Recreation Road to Stickney Creek CG. If you would like to make other lodging arrangements, you can call the Trout Shop in Craig at Fish - We will be targeting rainbow and brown trout. Bring your usual trout flies for stream fishing, PT s, copper john, lightening bugs, wooly buggers, hoppers, caddis, caddis pupa, parachutes or anything else you have had luck with. The Trout Shop will have the latest information. Gear - Pack a lunch and lots of water. Bring a 4 to 6 wt rod and floating line. Bring a 2 way radio (if you have one), hat, camera, suntan lotion and an anchor (this will be used in back eddies only). Shuttle - We will all meet at the campground at 8am (mountain time) We will probably make a run to the fly shop each morning to stock up on flies and the latest fishing reports. We ll make plans for shuttles each morning and buddy up where we can. Friday Most likely we will fish from Wolf Creek bridge to Stickney. We will meet somewhere for dinner, hopefully Izaak s if we can get reservations or Missouri River Inn (just beyond Mountain Place). Saturday We will be fishing Stickney to Mountain Palace. It s Snack Night! Meet at the campground after fishing. We will discuss the day s fishing, comparing fishing stories and lies. Bring whatever you want to contribute, chips, dip, vegs, cheese, crackers, summer sausage or just surprise us! Sunday Fish wherever you want day. 9 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 9 SFF BUDGET 101 By Gale Allen, SFF Treasure Shortly, the club will be wrapping up yet another fiscal year. We ve had an exceptional year with nationally renowned speakers, a revamped highly successful fly fishing school, an exceptional fly auction, outings, and of course our gourmet food service at our meetings. Your Board of directors has also been busy addressing our fiscal needs. We began tracking expenditures on a spreadsheet on a monthly basis by category so we may more easily digest income and expenditures. Also, a new budget for the fiscal year was adopted in April, as apposed to a fall adoption, so that come June 1 we have some idea of direction and how and where funds can be expended over the summer and early fall. These discussions and others have led the Board to ask that I provide membership with an overview of the composition, commitments, and status of the overall SFF budget. The SFF budget consists of three separate budgets; Club Operations, Conservation Fund, and Project Healing Waters (PHW). Each has their own funding sources. The primary source of funds for Club operations come from dues, fly auction, and the fly fishing school. Conservation monies are generated mainly from the conservation auction held in March and some individual donations. An important aspect of the Conservation Fund is that the Club has a verbal commitment with the Conservation Committee that Conservation monies are only to be used for conservation projects and funds are carried over from one year to the next unless there is a fiscal emergency whereby the Club could tap those funds. Project Healing Waters is a program where Club members donate their time, but the funds for PHW come from outside sources and cannot be used by the Club for any other program. Unexpended funds not used by PHW are ultimately required to be returned to the National PHW organization. Over the years all three budget operations have been combined into a single SFF budget. Last year when some questions arose with the Conservation Fund concerning income carryover from one fiscal year to the next, it became evident that we needed to review our budget structure and fund status. We went back several years to separate out the three funds and account for income and expenditures for each. Figures were generated for the , , and fiscal years. Keep in mind that the following figures for this fiscal year ( ) only go through mid- April (the fiscal year ends May 31). We found that the Conservation Fund has steadily increased its reserve each fiscal period with a reserve of $2,027 in 08-09, expanding to $4,980 in 09-10, and $6,233 in These figures do not deduct a $2,800 commitment for two conservation projects. PHW went from a deficit of $300 in to a positive $1,670 in and $1,847 in Concerns surfaced over the Clubs general operating budget once the funds were separated. In there was a deficit of $659, a deficit of $2,309 and currently we are at a deficit for this year (through mid April) of $2,782. Past Boards have been aware of the issue as the budget set aside $2,555 from reserves to balance that periods budget and for the budget $4,352 was set aside from reserves. For the upcoming fiscal period we are anticipating as much as a $7,360 shortfall. Note that for each of the last two fiscal years the Club has not expended the full reserve set aside. The main outcome of the above is we are spending more than we are taking in for the general operation of the Club. There are reserves that cover the overruns at this time however, hard costs are increasing and Club draws such as speakers must be booked well in advance. The Board will be bringing the concern to you next fall and will be developing a strategy to address the issue.

10 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 10 FFF COOKBOOK By: Dan Ferguson The FFF is publishing a cook book! I know how exciting this is for everyone and we want to get our best recipes in the book. Our goal is to get recipes, nationwide, with an emphasis on outdoor themed dishes. Of course we ll have categories for every style dish. You need to be an FFF member to contribute (talk to Dan Ferguson) and we ll be selling in advance for $19.95 in the last quarter of The cost will $25 after publishing. FFF ELLENSBURG FLY FISHING FAIR By: Dan Ferguson Most of you missed a great time rubbing elbows with the finest tiers in the west at the Washington Council s Ellensburg Fly Fishing Fair April 29 & 30. This event is something you want to put on your calendar as an annual event. The fair is always held the weekend before Mothers Day. We had 80 tiers from all over the western US and Canada, 25 vendors displaying all manner of Fly Fishing related paraphernalia, great silent auction and raffles, seminars, good food and a chance to chat with the states most knowledgeable and experienced fly fishers. Carla prepared a volunteer dinner for 185 folks Friday night with the invaluable help of Karen Berube, and Ali Melmoth. Mike and Mike were there when needed and I pretty much just stayed out of the way and went to the store a couple of times! Most think the volunteer dinner is the highlight of the event, easily surpassing the Banquet Saturday evening! As the club liaison for the FFF, I d like to see many more of us attend this event as tiers, volunteers or just attendee s. Carl Johnson, the council President, has made a commitment to bring the FFF to the entire state and is committed to keep the fair as local as possible. I look forward to talking to you about next years show at our upcoming club meetings. EVERETT HERALD FLY FISHING BLOG Mike Benbow, an avid fly fisherman and tyer who has done some freelance writing for some fly fishing magazines, now writes for the Everett Herald and has a fly fishing blog. He intends to provide news, advice, fishing information and hopefully a little entertainment about the fly fishing world in general and about Northwest fly fishing in particular. He would like our members to send him fishing reports, photos of nice fish, information about our conservation activities and other projects.
