Spokane Fly Fishers September, 2018 SEPTEMBER 12TH 7:00 PM STANN GRATER INTERNATIONAL FLY FISHING INSTRUCTOR By: Paul Olsen Fly fishing is a sport that will give you a lifetime of enjoyment and take you to some of the most beautiful places in the world. Stann Grater I have known our speaker Stann Grater for many years. He has led a life that would be the envy of many of us. He worked for Orvis as a casting instructor, fly fishing show product representative and fishing guide. He traveled the world on the company expense account. Many of us would be jealous that Orvis was paying him to do things that we wish someone would pay us to do for living. Stann is a very knowledgeable, caring and sharing instructor. He can t help himself if he sees you doing something wrong he wants to teach you to do it better and correctly. He can t stop wanting to make people better fisherman. He loves improving their fishing enjoyment and skills. Stann combines a lifelong passion for fly fishing and 15 years as a professional fly fishing guide and fly casting instructor helping clients unlock the mysteries of fly casting. In March 2009, Stann joined Gonzaga University as an Adjunct Professor of Fly Fishing. LAKE TROLLING WITH A FLY Presented to the Spokane Fly Fishers Anatomy of a Lake Reading Lakes Lake Fishing Tackle Do I Really Need a Boat? Presentations and Techniques These and many more topics will covered at the presentation. I encourage you to come and hear Stann s approach to fly fishing lakes. I don t think you will be disappointed in his teaching us more about fly fishing our local lakes using trolling flies. 2 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 2 THE PREZ SEZ By: Doug Keene As I write this note it is mid-august and most of our major outings have been completed, though there are still six to go. We have heard good feedback from those who have participated in outings and interest has mostly been very good. With this heat it seems that the trout have gone on vacation or have been hiding wherever there is cooler water. However, those who bothered to get up early or fish late in the day still caught their share of good fighting trout. Maybe not the biggest guys, but any fish in that net is a good catch in my book. Actually some of the smaller fish sometimes put up the best fight. I attended the Browns Lake outing in June, and I have never seen so many fish being caught by our members, including some recent fly school graduates. I got so excited about pulling those fish up into my pontoon that, while trying to get a good photo of the largest one, the fish jumped up in my face and caused me to drop an expensive cell phone in 15 feet of water. Even when fishing is great, there is always something to remind you that sometimes the fish still win. The new Board of Directors has been busy this summer and there are many projects moving along that hopefully will lead to some good things in the coming year. We are working on the new directory, continuing to improve the website, and getting ready for the new electronic version of the Barbless starting in October. Some members are working to clean out our club storage locker to get rid of some ancient, and sometimes smell, fly tying materials and other items so we can go to a smaller locker and save the club some money. The Board also chose to go to a new insurance company, which has already let us save several hundred dollars. Those dollars saved will go to supporting and improving all of our activities. The annual Fly Auction will be coming in November, so, for those of you who tie flies, it s time to start making flies for the sale. For those who don't tie, we hope you will pick some up and donate them to the auction. There are several local sources that sell quality flies for less than a $1, so please do what you can. This activity is a major source of income for the club, and supports quality activities throughout the year. Please do your part to support the auction, both by contributing flies and also buying some of the outstanding work and donations of our members. Great flies catch great fish! Looks like we are still in need of hosts for the fall outings at Dry Falls Lake/Lake Lenore and the Clark Fork River. The dual entries are just in case we have fire or access problems at one place and have to use an alternate. If interested, please contact John Hudson at jhcutbow@comcast.net. No host, no outing. Be sure and attend our monthly meetings this year. Paul Olsen, our new VP, has lined up some really excellent speakers this year that you will not want to miss. FLY TYING RECIPES NEEDED One of the features of switching the Barbless over to electronic distribution, as will happen next month, will be that we can include more information in each issue. One of the things we want to do is to try to have at least one fly tying recipe each month. We encourage all of you to submit your favorite tying recipes to Linda Howe, the Barbless Editor (fredlindah@comcast.net). A photo of your creation is encouraged, but if you would rather have us prepare the photo just submit an example and we'll do the rest.

THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 3 CONSERVATION CORNER By: Claude Kistler, Chairman When we teach a person to fly fish, we just created a conservationist Lee Wulff CONSERVATION I saw this comment in a recent FFI article on Craig Matthews. Craig is owner operator of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone and an international fly fishing conservation leader. When asked about giving advice to fly fishing s next generation, he responded, I can t stress enough how much they need to get involved. They need to speak a whole lot louder, a whole lot more frequently, and a lot clearer. They need to step up to the plate and get involved in fly fishing, but they also have to get involved with all that goes with it, which includes conservation projects. We have to fight climate change. We have to stand up for what s right and write letters and get involved with the right organizations like Fly Fishers International and Trout Unlimited. Also get involved in the small little advocacy groups and grass roots activism groups. That s the real key. Please join your SFF Conservation Committee as we continue our work with the Colville National Forest agency to improve Browns Lake. I hope members have been able to fish Browns this summer and have filled out the creel survey forms. Miguel Ferrera noted that many of the fish he caught were rainbows as opposed to the cutbow species that were thought to be in greater numbers. The ultimate goal of the creel surveys is to help determine if native cutthroat are returning from the spawning creek and re-populating the lake. AREA ADVOCACY GROUPS SPOKANE RIVER CLEAN-UP - The fifteenth annual Spokane River Clean-Up will be held on Saturday, September 15th. Join other volunteers for two hours picking up trash and recyclable materials along the banks of our beautiful Spokane River. Because the time is short between our general meeting and the clean-up day, please go to the Spokane River Forum website to sign-up or just meet up at Highbridge Park. This is an important annual event that is critical to the beauty and health of the Spokane River. SPOKANE RIVERKEEPER - Please note that on Friday, September 28 th the Spokane Riverkeeper will hold their second annual fundraiser SPOKEN RIVER. Learn more about this important event by visiting the Spokane Riverkeeper website. CONSERVATION COMMITTEE MEETINGS - The Conservation Committee meets on the fourth Tuesday each month. This month it will be September 25th, prior to the board meeting. If you are interested in joining the committee or wish to participate in our conservation activities, please contact me at clkistler@comcast.net.

THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 4 MISSOURI RIVER OUTING 2018 SEPTEMBER 27TH THROUGH OCTOBER 1ST Host: Carolyn Sells This is primarily a float trip. To get to Craig, Montana, go east on I-90. Just past Missoula, take Hwy 200 over Rodgers Pass to Hwy 287 to Wolf Creek Travel north on Hwy 15, 11 miles to Craig (Exit 234). Camping - Most of us will be camping at Stickney Creek campground. Bring your earplugs if you are planning to camp out. It s just off the freeway so it s a little noisy. To get to the campground, across the bridge at Craig, turn north and travel about 4 ½ miles on the Recreation Road to Stickney Creek Campground. If you would like to make other lodging arrangements, you can call the Trout Shop in Craig at Fish - We will be targeting rainbow and brown trout. Bring your usual trout flies for stream fishing, PT s, copper john, lightening bugs, zebra midge, wooly buggers, hoppers, caddis, caddis pupa, parachutes or anything else you have had luck with. The Trout Shop will have the latest information. Gear - Pack a lunch and lots of water. Bring a 4 to 6 wt. rod and floating line. Bring a 2 way radio (if you have one), hat, camera, suntan lotion and an anchor (this will be used in back eddies only). Shuttle - We will all meet at the campground at 8am (mountain time) each day. We will probably make a run to the fly shop each morning to stock up on flies and the latest fishing reports. We ll make plans for shuttles each morning and buddy up where we can. Thursday Most likely we will fish from Wolf Creek bridge to Stickney. Friday We will fish from Wolf Creek bridge to Stickney again. It s Snack Night! Meet at the campground after fishing. We will discuss the day s fishing, comparing fishing stories and lies. Bring whatever you want to contribute chips, dip, veggies, cheese, crackers, summer sausage or just surprise us! This is the only organized meal you re on our own for the rest. Saturday We will be fishing Stickney to Mountain Palace. Or, fish wherever you want day. Sunday We will be fishing Stickney to Mountain Palace again. Or, fish wherever you want day. Monday Most likely we will fish from Wolf Creek bridge to Stickney. Emergency Numbers: Benefis Hospital, Great Falls, Mercy Flight St. Peter s Hospital, Helena, Hopefully, we will see you on the river.

THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 5 MISSOURI RIVER/YELLOWSTONE OUTING - SEPT. 30TH Host: John Hudson We will be continuing the Missouri River trip with an outing to West Yellowstone. Plan on leaving Missouri River Sunday and driving south from Helena on Hwy 287. That will take you down to West Yellowstone. We will be staying at Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park. They do not allow tent camping and the other KOA in the areas closes on 10/01. They have a limited number of cabins and a large selection of RV sites. West Yellowstone allows easy access to Hebgon Lake, Henry Lake and Quake Lake. All are considered excellent float lakes. There is also access to the Yellowstone Park and the rivers within it s boundaries, including the Madison River and the Firehole. Longer drives take you to Soda Butte and numerous other creeks. It s been a while since we have done an extended trip like this but they have always been a great time. Anyone wishing to attend can contact John Hudson at jhcutbow@comcast.net. Due to the large number of phone calls because of work please call and leave a message if for some reason you cannot . Hope to see you there. CHOPAKA LAKE OUTING RESCHEDULED NEW DATES: OCT. 14TH & 15TH Host: Paul Olsen Due to numerous factors the decision was made to reschedule the Chopaka outing until October 14th and 15th. The factors were unfriendly skies with smoke and the hot temperatures along with the high fire danger. Now, with the rains and the lower temperatures, things should be better for fishing there now. Chopaka is a lake located at some elevation so our concern now is that the weather at the higher elevation doesn t turn too cold and snowy there too early. If, for uncontrollable circumstances, we have to have to cancel the trip, it will be announced on the club website. If you have questions please don t hesitate to call me at or me at Pkolebear@gmail.com. If you have not gone to Chopaka, let me remind you that this lake is one that is best fished with a floating device such as a float tube, pontoon boat or boat. I would not recommend fishing it from the bank. I don t think that fishing from shore would be enjoyable for anyone. Most of the people who originally signed up for this outing said that they would be still interested in fishing at Chopaka at this later date. If you are interested in participating in this outing, please let me know so I can make sure we have enough food for you at the potluck on Saturday night. If you have any questions, please call me.

THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 6 MARK YOUR CALENDAR - October 10TH By: Paul Olsen Spokane Fly Fishers October meeting on October 10th will feature: Tyler Balich of Coeur D Alene s North 40 Fly Shop. Fishing the Clark Fork/St Regis Rivers Plus, a before-meeting fly tying demonstration. BROWNS LAKE OUTING REPORT JUNE 23RD By: Miguel Ferrera Friday brought a big rain and thunder storm to those of us that were camping out, but Saturday was a really nice day. About 12 people attended this outing, I talked with most of them and I think every one enjoyed it. The weather was perfect, the fishing and catching were good, though they were running on the small side. It was surprising to me that there were so many rainbows caught, and in three different age classes. On Saturday, I caught 15 fish, from 6" to 15" twelve were rainbows, two were cutbows, and one cutthroat. The lake was a cutthroat fishery until they stocked rainbow in it one year because of a shortage of cutthroat at the hatchery. All in all, it was a beautiful day on Browns Lake. SELWAY OUTING REPORT JUNE 30TH By: John Hudson We only had two other attendees besides myself. Norm Urbat, my co-host, and Robin. This was the first trip for all of us so it was an information gathering trip as much as fishing. We weren t sure what to expect. The river is VERY LARGE. You are only fishing the first ten feet of bank. The banks are littered with LARGE boulders with very steep access. What I found was that, when fishing the back eddies and the slow water, the fish would come out from the shadows of the boulders and ATTACK the dry files. LOTS of fun. I caught 27 fish in 2-1/2 hours. Phenomenal. The limited access will keep a lot of fishers away but if you are up for the challenge, it is rewarding. There are great campsites at O'Hare campground. Hopefully, we will get this on next year s outings list.

THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 7 FLY FISHING SCHOOL OUTING ON THE NORTH FORK OF THE CDA RIVER By: Kurt Tempel Ten fishermen gathered early in the morning on July 14th for a great day of instruction and fishing on the NF of the CDA River. SFF fishing instructors, Rick Newman, Gale Allen and Roger Bertsch paired the eager fishermen into small groups after first enjoying some coffee and donuts. Each instructor then took his students to a section of the river and coached the students on how to read the water, the kind of fly to use and how best to use the skills they learned from the spring s fishing school. Many thanks to our instructors for making this hands-on event a huge success. Many thanks also to fishing students: Gerald and Sharon Hust, Alan Tarbutton, Carla Hofferber, Bill Pierce, Ed Syslo and Randy Styborski for being a part of this outing. Well done all! 8 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 8 LIBRARY NEWS BY: Larry Ray A Substantial Upgrade. As we move into our new year, I am most pleased to announce a substantial upgrade of our library. Using funds dedicated to this purpose by our Board, as well as those raised through the sale of some outdated and duplicate library materials, we have been able to add the below-listed titles. As our book collection has been accumulated largely through donations over many years, it had become dated over time. Now I can proudly tell you that our collection has a much needed balance between older, classic titles and newer works. Included are five newer books by John Gierach, who s been entertaining us with his dry wit and straight-forward style long enough to be described as beloved. His FISHING BAMBOO is probably the most concise, definitive work on collecting and fishing bamboo today. We added an autobiographical work by Thomas McGuane who, in my estimation, is the best ever at turning a phrase over fishing. Two more of Dave Hughes s works have also been added. Those of you who were present for his presentation to the club certainly appreciate this author, who is becoming a northwest fly fishing icon for both the instructive and entertaining quality of his work. Some of you will also note, I m sure, that we purchased fewer videos than books. This because our video collection is much more current and less in need of update. However, Devin Olson s video on modern nymphing will be appreciated by any of you who were present for his entertaining and informative presentation to the SFF on that topic at last April s meeting. I want to thank the Board for its dedication of the necessary funds, as well as for its encouragement in this upgrade. I also want to thank all of you who submitted suggestions for titles. We were able to add some of what was recommended. And, many thanks to Rick Newman for his able assistance in navigating the wilds of Amazon to make these purchases. (Assistance, in this instance, means I watched while he navigated!) 9 THE BARBLESS FLYER Page 9 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! By: Doug Keene, President Our club is operated entirely by member volunteers who donate some of their personal time to make sure that meetings, outings, classes, and many other activities take place and are of the highest quality for all the rest of our membership. Many have told us that they enjoy the work and like the fact that they are contributing to the overall success of the club. Well, as the new season starts, we are in need of some volunteers for some critical openings. This month we are looking for someone to be the Chairman of the Education Committee. This position involves planning of educational events throughout the year. These events are unique opportunities for members to learn about some specific techniques in fly fishing, beyond what we all learn at meetings or formal classes. A good example from last year is on-the-river fly fishing training on the CDA and pontoon lake fishing training at Williams Lake. The Chairman does not have to be the teacher, but can arrange for experts either within or outside the club to teach. The Chairman has the ability to bring other members into the committee to assist with the planning, the selection of topics, and the selection of teachers. The club provides a healthy budget for this committee to operate, and has the support of the members of the Board and others within the club who can provide mentoring and support for educational activities. Please contact Doug Keene (keene4616@comcast.net) if you have questions, are interested in this position or know somebody who would be a good candidate. Don't miss this chance to make a difference! FLY FISHERS INTERNATIONAL FLY SOCIAL By: Len Zickler Please join me at the first Spokane FFI Fly Social to support the great work of the Spokane Riverkeeper.
