Paddle Smart Presentation From: Ian STEWART I believe the presentation went well. A small hiccup at the start with finding a location for the screen and getting the projector to focus. But, with the help of a few of your members the technical stuff was sorted out and the show went on. I believe the participants learned a few things about preparedness, self-rescue and of course Nanaimo Search and Rescue. Duane and myself also learned a few things about the types of vessels used and I was pleasantly surprised that many/most people are using a pfd and other safety gear already! Plus, leaving a trip plan with someone they can count on before they go. Big smiles over that one. I also handed out a few items such as emergency whistle, emergency blanket and flash card for folks interested. I was also wondering if it was possible to send out a follow up to your members with the below information for their reference: 1. The federal AdventureSmart website: Contains loads of safety preparedness info as well as a handy trip planning form they they can print off and use 2. Province of BC River Forecast Centre website: Contains current river levels and flood forecast modelling info. Also, link to realtime hydraulic data. 3. Raven Rescue Provides a range of training, including water safety, swift water, wilderness first aid, etc

4. Nanaimo Search and Rescue website and you can follow us on Facebook. Contains plenty of information on the organization, trip planning, sponsorship and we periodically post-preparedness tips on FB as well as upcoming fundraising events. Note: NSAR is currently fundraising towards a purpose built hall. Your generous donation of $100 will go towards these efforts. More info on the building project is on the NSAR webpage. For the stipend you can mail a cheque payable to Nanaimo Search and Rescue to: 195B Fourth St, Nanaimo, BC V9R 1T1 On a personal note, Duane and I would like to thank the club member for the gift of the beautiful handcrafted pens. Absolutely, stunning work! Please pass on our gratitude. If you have and other questions, please get in touch. Otherwise, thanks for supporting NSAR. Regards, Jamai

Spider Lake Fishing Report March 24 From: RICHARD BEST I Bass fished Spider until late afternoon. Only had one fish nibble at my rubber worm. I caught one small RB on a worm. One of the chironomid guys got into some nice RBs, fishing just off the bottom in the deepest part of the lake. He had a sounder with a thermometer, and he said the surface temp was 44F. I have caught bass as early as March 15 in other years, but I never caught one until the temp was at least 47F. The next time the weather warms up the wily bass will wake up and start eating. I shot some cool underwater bug video. These screen caps don't really show it. In the movie they are crawling around and darting thru the water and eating each other.

Cowichan River Fishing Report March 29 Bruce Murray Forecast was pretty crappy dominated with rain and some wind to be going on an all day drift and fishing trip down the Cowichan River from Road Pool 12 km to Skutz Falls take out point. As a result, only two showed up for the event. However it only rained north of the Cowichan River and we had a beautiful fishing day.dominated by no rain, overcast and warm. Randy O Donnell in his very fast PT Boat. Note the weather forecast was all wrong.

Only one other boat on the river and we passed him in the first 250 meters as he had a fish on, so we had first cast on all the fishing water for the entire day.

Although fishing was slow, we both had multiple fish on but nothing to the beach as we are experienced long distance release fishers.

Randy casting tight loops to an excellent looking feeding station.

What did we learn at the General Meeting Paddle Smart Presentation. Go over a woody obstruction, not under not like this kayaker
