1 LLBJSS COACHING PACKAGE Welcome coaches, assistant coaches, managers and volunteers! Thank you so much for volunteering your time to our organization. Without you many children would not be able to enjoy and participate in the great sport of soccer. WHAT TO DO FIRST (Details follow) Get your Criminal record check (CPIC with vulnerable sector check) number to the Mini Director before May 30, so they will record the number and expiry date. Request forms from LLBJSS will be given to all new coaches during the first coaches meeting. Contact the parents on your roster via text or or phone ASAP. Every parent must respond in one of those formats. any parent requests for player team changes to your coaching director who will contact the parents and the registrar. Pick up your equipment from the Equipment Director the first week of practice. Jerseys will be distributed within the first two weeks of practices. Take the MED (Making Ethical Decisions) in Soccer (NCCP) online course if you have not already done so. You do not need to take a workshop. It takes about one hour to complete. Give your NCCP number to the Mini Director once it is complete. Here is a link to Alberta Sport MED. Prepare any information you need to provide to parents: FOIP, newsletter, etc. Register for up to two tournaments Practice! THANK YOU! COACH & PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

2 As a coach, it is your responsibility to help to develop your players. The Mini Director and Youth Director have copies of drills and skills that you are welcome to use at any time. Coaches, and any Assistant Coaches and Team Managers that coaches recruit also need to provide a criminal record check (CPIC with vulnerable sector). If you need forms, please contact the Mini or Youth Director. the Volunteer coordinator at (Sam Duhamel, and let them who is helping, so she can record their participation. Developing players not only means developing their skills but also their emotional wellbeing. We need to be aware that this is not FIFA. All of our kids come to us with differing abilities and capabilities. We must provide positive feedback whenever we can. Practices Plan your practices before you arrive. BE ON TIME/EARLY! A typical practice for U6 involves: 1. Warm-up exercises 2. Skills and drills (3-5 fun games) 3. Scrimmage (10-15 minutes of game play) 4. Cool down We like for you to practice on the same night as other teams of your age category so that you can scrimmage at the end. This game play is very important when coaching kids. We are responsible to provide a safe and caring soccer field for these players to socially and emotionally blossom. LLBJSS has zero tolerance for putdowns, negative talk to our players, our referees, our spectators, our coaches or anyone involved in our soccer community! 3 To help us to become better coaches it is essential that all of us be certified with the NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program.) We will offer courses in our area if we have enough interest, if not you can attend one in another community. We will pay the mileage and the cost of the course. In addition, there is an online Ethics in Coaching course that we all must take. It takes about 1 hour to do and it can be found if you google Making Ethical Decisions (MED); it is part of the NCCP program. If you have not already, please search this up and take it at your leisure. In the end, these courses will help us to develop more knowledge about the sport of soccer, coaching in general, and skill and drill development. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested in taking a course. If you already have your course, we NEED your NCCP certification number for our records. Coaches who coach U12 and up MUST have the proper training to be on the bench during games. Contact the Youth Director for more information. First Parent Meeting Communicating with parents is one part of your job as coach. Many parents at the Mini level are new to the soccer club and the parents of new, young players need frequent, clear communication. WELCOME LETTER Provide parents with a welcome letter that includes your contact information, possible tournaments that you may want to attend and anything else that you deem important, i.e. general procedures and rules (below). There is a general beginning/mid/end newsletter available for anyone to use if you are interested. In addition, you or your Team Manager will want to set up a phone/text tree so that if you need to disperse information or cancel a practice you can do so without yourself making all the calls. Use your first meeting to outline your expectations of parents and players, such as:

4 No jewelry at practices or games; take care of uniforms (wash them regularly) and only wear them to soccer practices and games. Proper soccer dress code must be followed. Shin pads and soccer socks are required. Soccer cleats/ shoes are not mandatory. Ensure that socks and shorts do not have side pockets, zippers, tassels, clips, buttons or anything else that may pose a danger to themselves, or others. Ensure you are aware of any medical conditions especially allergies and asthma, be sure epi-pens are always available if they are allergic. Make all parents aware of the first aid kit that will always be kept in your soccer bag. Be sure to inform parents that at the mini age level that it is not acceptable to drop their children off in the parking lot and leave. They must be in the practice area unless they have specifically informed you that another parent is responsible for their child that night. Essentially YOU as a coach are responsible for the children on your team so be sure parents understand that for safety of their children they must respect this rule. All U4 parents are expected to be on the field with their children, if you have concerns with particular parents and need help, please let me know. Siblings or friends that are not registered in LLB soccer cannot be on the field. This is for insurance reasons. It is a rule handed down from Lakeland Jr Soccer Association. Find out who on your team is NOT willing to travel to games and tourneys so that you are aware of this from the beginning. Equipment Bags Each bag is equipped with balls appropriate for the age level and an emergency kit. Mini coaches will also receive small pop up nets. Please notify the equipment director when supplies need to be replenished. Weather & Fields

5 Mother nature is our biggest problem when coaching in the outdoor season. It seems that thunderstorms love to come out 10 minutes before practice starts! Be sure to let all parents know that at the first sign of lightning everyone must leave the field. This is NOT optional! If there is lightning, get the team off the field and if necessary, re-schedule. This is another reason to have a phone tree or text group set up. Playing soccer in the rain is up to you, but LIGHTNING means GET OFF THE FIELD IMMEDIATELY! Safety concerns with fields or nets need to be passed along to the coaching directors (Mini and Youth) as well as the Field Director. Youth League Coach Information We hold executive meetings every 6-8 weeks. We ask that a coach, assistant or manager attend the first half hour of these meeting so that you can stay informed and have input into our club. During league play, I suggest that you take a photo of the final game sheets after the game and keep it until the season ends to ensure proof of the score. If a game sheet is lost, there is no way to track the game. If you are an all-girls team, or all-boys, and there are no other all-girl or all-boy teams at that age category in the league, you will get an automatic path to provincials. Keep in mind, if this happens, you will NOT be able to play in the Lakeland Cup (as it is a provincial qualifying game). During league play games, if you are HOME, you must provide two balls. Those balls need to be FIFA certified balls, so please be sure that you have them. If you don t please contact the equipment manager. If you have concerns, please do not contact Lakeland official yourself, the concern must come to me and then be relayed through our President, Al Robertson. League play rosters are available online at the Lakeland soccer site. You will need a roster filled out for every game and if you are the winner, you are required to the scores to execdir@lakelandsoccer.ca

6 Indoor season field house costs a lot of money, if for any reason you cancel your practice, you MUST let me know in advance so that I can cancel the rental. If you do not let me know, we will still need to pay rental fees for that time. REGISTERING FOR TOURNAMENTS Register for your tournaments ASAP, to ensure your team gets a spot. Tournaments do fill up quickly! Check out for available tournaments. Any games you want to play are a bonus to the kids so feel free to chat with the parents and attempt to set up games. The club will pay for two (2) registration fees (plus Lakeland Cup) for a total of three (3) tournaments. How to Register Check with parents to see who is available to go to the tournament. If enough parents agree, find the tournament page online and register for the tournament. Contact the Treasurer as she/he will pay for the tournament fees. In some cases, the fees will require a credit card. If you use your own, the Treasurer will reimburse you with a cheque immediately. If you cannot use your own, please let the Treasurer know in advance so that she can make other arrangements. If you cannot go to a tournament at last minute, please arrange for an assistant coach or team manager to go with your Mini team. YOUTH LEAGUE BLACKOUT DATES Please give the Youth Coaching Director your blackout dates in writing ASAP after the first coaches meeting. The organizer will try her best to work around your schedule for league games on weekends. For example, if you have a wedding to attend on the weekend April 23rd then you would write that down to pass along so they can try to not have your team play that weekend.
