PINCKNEY PIRATE FOOTBALL Vision Statement: To develop well disciplined student/athletes who strive for educational and athletic excellence. Mission Statement: Develop student/athletes who are committed to personal excellence and team success. Provide inspirational and motivational environment where preparation, practice and hard work generate legitimate opportunities for success. Emphasize the importance and development of fundamentals and techniques necessary for positive experiences in football and in life. Create a consistently exciting and entertaining program that generates huge levels of support, pride, and tradition for all in our community to share. Values: Discipline: Means being mentally and physically tough, to continually improve and become the best athlete, coach, mentor, student, teacher and family member we can be. Effort: Give everything we have in everything we do. Pride: It is a personal commitment; it is an attitude which separates excellence from mediocrity. Integrity: Do what is right. Be honest and loyal to parents, coaches, teachers, classmates, and ourselves. Commitment: Be committed to personal excellence. Our goals must be a priority. Teamwork: Teamwork is achieved when individuals make personal sacrifices to work together for the success of the group.

Introduction Playing a high school sport is a huge commitment for not only the athlete, but for the athlete s family as well as the coaches and their families. Please remember that making a commitment does not guarantee success on the field, but a lack of commitment will guarantee failure. Please consider the following: What a Commitment Means: 1. For the next several months, you will be required to put your scholastic work and football above other social activities. Success in both these areas requires a lot of time, hard work and great sacrifice. 2. You are student at Pinckney High School to get an education first. School must come first. Those not ready to work in the classroom should not be out for football. 3. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY both for classes and your football program responsibilities (meetings, practice, weight training, and games). Be on time if not early. Excuses for misses after-the fact are not acceptable. 4. Pinckney Pirate football players must conduct themselves with class at all times. We must exhibit good sportsmanship on the field and good citizenship off the field. Every action of a team member reflects on their coaches, teammates and school. 5. Respect your teammates and coaches. Use the Golden Rule. Treat others, as you would want to be treated. We must pull together as a team if we are going to have success as a team. 6. There is NO room in our program for those who abuse their bodies and minds with drugs. Violations will result in disciplinary action according to the school rules. They give up all the rights to any season awards or honors, which they have earned but have not yet received. As well as any they might earn upon their return from their disciplinary action. A Commitment: Will cost you. Counts the most in the toughest of times. You will know ~ if you re committed ~ on decisions you make while all alone. The rewards of Total Commitment do not come instantaneously, but the rewards come after a lot of sacrifice, effort, disappointment, and heartache. However, the real rewards for Total Commitment will last a lifetime.

PINCKNEY PIRATE PRIDE: It is a privilege to be a member of this football squad and to be a Pinckney Pirate. The time, effort, and energy we all spend in making our program a success is based on a strong conviction that football and an education will provide some of your greatest values and most rewarding moments. Take pride in everything you do as part of our program, for in football as in life, the success you enjoy will result from the effort you are willing to give to be a winner. Pinckney High School Football has committed to PRIDE and EXCELLENCE. Remember the players who came before you every time you walk into the locker room, weight room, step on the field, or wear a Pinckney Pirate Football Uniform. Remember you are setting the example for those who will follow in your footsteps. You are a Pinckney Pirate all the time and forever. Athletic Minimum Standards Academic: 1. All players must pass a minimum of 4 classes the previous semester to be on the team. (MHSAA rule) 2. All players must have above a 1.7 GPA from the previous semester or they will sit at least 1 game. Grade checks for these players must be turned in to the Athletic Office each Friday until the season or formal grading period ends, whichever comes first. (PCS rule) 3. All JV & 9 th grade as well as any Varsity player below a 1.7 at semester will report to study hall after school during the season. (Our rule) Weight room Requirement: 1. All Football players will be required to participate in a weight-training program during the season. 2. The purpose of this strength training is to prevent injury, maintain strength level, and to improve strength. 3. Since one of the purposes in strength training for football is to help avoid injuries, the need to maintain all such development actually increases as the season goes on. The loss of this strength could increase the chance of injury. 4. All players who plan to play football next year are expected to either be in another sport or working out with the team in the off-season. Requirements will be provided at the conclusion of this season.

Parent Expectations: Be positive with your student/athlete. Let them know you are proud they are part of the team. (focus on the benefits of teamwork and personal discipline) Encourage your athlete to follow all training rules. Help the coaches build a commitment to the team. (set a good example in your personal life) Allow your athlete to perform and progress at a level consistent with his ability. (athletes mature at different ages; some are more gifted) Always support the coaching staff when controversial decisions are made. (the coaches need your backing to keep good morale on the team) Insist on positive behavior in school and a high level of performance in the classroom. (numerous studies indicate extracurricular involvement helps enhance academic performance) Cheer for our team and players. Opponents and referees deserve respect. (realize the high school players will make mistakes. Your support is needed during tough times.) Promote having fun and being a team player. Very few high school athletes receive scholarships. (concentrate on what is best for the team. Preoccupation with statistics can be very distracting.) An athlete s self-confidence and self-image will be improved by support at home. Comparison to other athletes is discouraged. (encourage the athlete to do their best regardless of brothers or sisters who may have been outstanding players.) Winning is Great, but building positive team values is most important. (the concept of working together to perform a task will have lasting benefits. Winning takes place when all the little things are done correctly.) Find the time to be an avid booster of school activities. (help build a solid support system for ALL coaches and ALL athletes.) Athletes must attend all practices and contests. (stress the necessity to make a commitment to the team. Practice is important.) Emphasize the importance of well - balanced meals and regular sleep patterns. (an athlete functions best when care is taken to consume nutritious food and obtain sufficient rest.) Many athletes enjoy participating in several (sports specialization in one sport may prevent an athlete from enjoying great team relationships in other activities.) Persistence and being able to accept a role is extremely important for the team to be successful. (not everyone can be a starter, but everyone is important to the team. Some players may not develop until their senior season. Encourage them to be persistent.)

PINCKNEY PIRATE FOOTBALL Rules on Roles: This comes from Coaching Management magazine (Spring 2002). I thought it is a good outline for the responsibilities of how everyone involved should be acting. We all need a little reminder on what the rules on roles are. Coaches Roles: 1. Set a good example for players and fans to follow. 2. Be positive, fair, and consistent with the players. 3. Make playing time and strategy decisions with thought and care. 4. Establish and organize practice for the team on a daily basis. 5. Be a good communicator with players and parents. 6. Protect the safety of all athletes. 7. Know & employ injury prevention procedures. 8. Make sure players know expectations, procedures and rules for the program. Parents Roles: 1. Be a fan of everyone on the team. 2. Respect the decisions of the officials. 3. Respect the other fans, coaches and players. 4. Talk to your child if they have any questions and, if you still have questions, contact the coach through the proper procedures and channels. 5. Do not poison the water toward a coach, the program, or teammates by your conversation. Allow us to coach your child. 6. Do not talk to coaches on game day with a complaint. Make an appointment. 7. Understand that the coaches responsibility is to make certain that students are safe and become better people and athletes, not win every game. 8. Be supportive (not enabling) of your child. Players Roles: 1. Be positive and have a good attitude. 2. Support their teammates. 3. Work hard. 4. If you have any questions, ask the coach. 5. Know and follow school and team rules. 6. Challenge yourself as an athlete and as a person. 7. Meet classroom expectations. 8. Notify the coach of any scheduling conflicts in advance. 9. Talk to the coach about any concerns.

Fundraising Each year we perform a number of fundraisers to help meet the needs of our program. These fundraisers need your support and efforts to make them successful. Fundraisers currently planned for 2010 include: - Fall Sports Program Advertising - Buffalo Wild Wings Dinner Night (April 21 Howell) - Discount Cards - Direct Mail Solicitation These fundraisers as well as others from the past 6 years have helped us raise funds to provide items such as: - Helmets (yearly) - Shoulder Pads (yearly) - Varsity practice Jerseys (2010) - Practice pants (2008 & 2010) - End Zone Camera (2006 w/ HPYFA help) - Side line Camera (2008) - Game Pants (yearly) - Rubber Bumper Weights (2010) - Olympic Bar (2010) - Squat Racks (2008 & 2009) - Aluminum Training Bars (2005) - Footballs (yearly) - Scout Cameras (as needed) - Mini-DV tapes/dvds (yearly) - Hudl Subscription (2009 & 2010) - Blocking Dummies (2005) - Handshields (2007) - Blocking Sled (2008) - Coaches Clinic Fees (yearly) - Varsity White Uniforms (2005) - Varsity Red Jerseys (2005) - Varsity Black Jerseys (2006) - 9th grade White and Black Jerseys (2006 w/ Athletic Booster help) - 3 Hex bars (2005) - 2 Olympic Bars (2009) - Plyo boxes (2005) - Prowler (2008) - Helmet Decals (yearly) - Award T-shirts (yearly) - Digital Recording Equipment (2006, 2008, 2009) - Chains, ropes, PVC pipe & other training tools (yearly)

Pinckney Football Fall Sports Program Ad Sales Incentives For approximately 13 years, Pinckney High School Football parents have solicited advertising from local businesses for the Fall Sports Program that is printed and sold at all home high school football games. The Fall Sports Program includes pictures of all fall sports as well as a detailed roster of each level of the high school program. Considering the broad geographic area our league encompasses, advertisers investments in the Fall Sports Program can be seen by thousands of customers from Livingston, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties. Very few other mediums provide the broad spectrum of potential customers for the value we offer. Current economic conditions will make selling ads more challenging, but perhaps surprisingly, our 2009 ad sales were the fourth highest in the 13 years of this fund-raiser. Economic conditions have also made it difficult for families to afford the participation fee of $175. While scholarships are available from the athletic department, those will become scarce as the year continues. Keep in mind participation fees are combined with the Board of Education s appropriation to fund the operating costs of athletics. While we rejoice the bond s passage knowing the monies received from it will improve our facilities, that funding does not provide necessary equipment such as helmets, shoulder pads, or cloth needs. In order to help the football program raise money and provide parent volunteers an opportunity to reduce or perhaps eliminate this season s football participation fee, an incentive program has been designed. For every dollar of advertising sold over the first $300, 50% will be available to use towards your participation fee. For example; sell $400 worth of ads, you would have $50 toward your participation fee. Sell $650 worth of ads and the program will pay your entire participation fee (assuming it will still be $175 in fall of 2010.) All money must be collected before crediting your account and this money can only be applied to your 2010 participation fee for football. In order to be fair and professional in our sales procedures, a sales meeting will be held April 29 at 7:00pm in Room B202 of the high school. We will divide up the past and potential future businesses to each volunteer. Only those who attend this meeting will be allowed to use the incentive. Please make every effort to send a representative to that meeting on April 29.

FOOTBALL CALENDAR Most dates on the Google Calendar are official and confirmed. However, with construction occurring at the High School involving building the stadium on our present practice areas, some events may have to be changed or moved to another venue. At this point we will be practicing in the SE corner of the school near the baseball field. Also, some practice dates near the beginning of school have yet to be determined. Events such as Freshmen Orientation, Student Registration, Teacher workdays, etc. are not fully known at this time. We will work around student requirements the best we can. The calendar will be updated as many of the above-mentioned unknowns are solidified. Please check the blog regularly as I will make you aware that changes to the calendar have been made. Generally speaking, the practice schedule is from 7:30am-2 pm the week of August 9, 2-7:30pm the week of August 16, 2-6pm until school starts, and after school until 6pm during the school year. We practice most Saturdays in August and on Labor Day Varsity Schedule August 27 September 2 September 10 September 17 September 24 October 1 October 8 October 15 October 22 South Livonia Brighton* Grand Blanc* Milford* Crossover w/ Dexter *denotes KLAA Lakes Conference West Division All 9 th grade/jv games are played the day before the listed date at the opposite venue. 9 th grade games 4:30 with JV games beginning 20 minutes after the 9 th grade game.
