3 INTRODUCTION The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) through the Intercultural Programme showed its support for the FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) fortnight of action marks 12 years of commitment to the cause. In this report, we tell the story of football actions against racism in Ireland. FARE fortnight is a UEFA supported initiative and involves actions in all of the affiliates throughout Europe. In Ireland, it involves a partnership programme with Show Racism the Red Card. Development Officers of the FAI have been trained to deliver anti racism education workshops using the SRTRC pack. Preparation for the fortnight involves training of new staff to deliver workshops as well as providing briefing materials to assist staff to engage schools and clubs. Clubs are invited to register an expression of interest in being involved in the FARE fortnight on the SRTRC website. To assist clubs in their activities, they received anti racism themed wristbands, red cards, balls and bibs and a template activity to involve players in action. This year, we have involved a record of 10,035 participants in actions against racism in school and in the sport. We thank the staff involved in the Football Association of Ireland for their work, the schools and clubs for their support and assistance and the players and young people for their participation in helping us tackle racism. Together, we can Show Racism the Red Card! 3

5 INTERNATIONAL LEVEL The Fare Football People Weeks was marked as part of a UEFA supported programme of action within affiliates throughout Europe to promote the message Equal Game. In Ireland, we promoted the Equal Game message through using the hashtag #EqualGame for social media posts and also the slogan featured on 400 bibs used by clubs as part of the fortnight of action. Cork City FC 2. Kilkenny United WFC 3. Peamount United FC 4. St Patricks Athletic FC 5. Shamrock Rovers FC 6. Sligo Rovers FC 5
6 GRASSROOTS LEVEL The activities that took place at grassroots level included: Show Racism the Red Card photocall Anti Racism wristbands exchange Warm up activities wearing the EqualGame bibs Talks with players involved as to what is FARE fortnight David Tyrell of LB Rovers in Kerry gives us an idea of how they got involved and what was was involved: We had photos of teams holding the Show Racism the Red Card signs included in th current edition of the North Kerry Advertiser. This is the first year that LB Rovers FC have got involved in this campaign. The club was delighted to get involved as it saw it very important to make players and parents aware of the issue. The club chairman David Tyrrell launched the campaign with photos of the signs, wristbands and football kindly donated by the FARE Group being posted on the club facebook page. This was to show that the club was getting involved in this initiative. This was followed up with photos being taken at an U12 Kerry Schoolboys match between LB Rovers FC and Listowel Celtic on Thursday October 11th. The players shook hands and held the signs and also the football before the match started. LB Rovers FC continued their involvement on Friday October 19th and October 20th with visits by the chairman to all the academy groups to talk to the players about the issue. Photos were taken of the players with the signs. The chairman also attended two Kerry Schoolboys/girls League teams and had photos of players from both teams holding the signs. This included the U15 Kerry School Boys League game between LB Rovers FC and Listowel Celtic and also the U13 Kerry School Boys League game between LB Rovers FC and St Brendans Park FC. The final part of the LB Rovers FC involvement was to distribute wrist bands to the U12 LB Rovers FC squad at their training session on Wednesday October 24th. The response from parents and players was very positive to LB Rovers FC involvement in the campaign. The club looks forward to getting involved in future years in the initiative. 6

9 SCHOOLS The Show Racism the Red Card DVD education pack is a resource which harnesses the profile of sports stars to convey the anti-racism education message. The DVD features interviews with senior soccer internationals and stars from other sports as well as young people speaking out against racism. As in each of the previous 11 years, FAI Development Officers trained to deliver age appropriate sessions to young people were in 118 schools with 5724 young people participating Some FAI Development Officers, as well as delivering the education workshop, also organised other activities including inter school tournaments and activities related to other programmes of the association such as the Futsal programme. FARE fortnight provides a great opportunity for young people to learn about the topic of racism and appreciate how it has not place in school or sport. 9
