PLAYER PROFILE Player s Name: Richard Reading. Nickname: Dick. How did you hear about the club and who introduced you to the club? John [Screwy] Carew. What year did you join? 1977 What position did you play? When ever the coach had all his main positions filled except one that was me. Did you play any other sport under the CBOB banner e.g. Cricket, Basketball or Squash? Cricket and basketball. "Most Memorable Game and Why" At Lapstone oval & the mountain men were really sledging us, which they were good at, as we were 2pts behind right on full time & right on halfway & the sideline. One heckler being unusually smart screamed field goal I think it was Chris Cassidy who took the advice & duly slotted it over to give us the win. YEEHA What year did you stop playing? Did you play for any other clubs? Lane Cove Did any other members of your family play for the club (brothers, sons etc?) My Sons, Boon and Phillip. Did you hold any executive positions at the club? President, Treasurer and Social Secretary. Did you coach any sides? 2nds, 3rds and 4ths. Did you captain any sides? 3rds and 4ths. Did you win any premierships? 2 nd grade runners up.

Did you go on any club trips or tours? USA, Hawaii and Grafton. Are there any great moments or stories you would like to share? At age 50 playing for Lane Cove against Boon aged 14 having his first game for CBOB s. Who were some of your more colourful colleagues/characters? Shy-Ted and Whorie in their younger days; Jack Longhurst, Evil, Hoops, Flipper, Tolly and Dave give-em Currie. Mum and Dad + folding jerseys on a Saturday morning What year did you join? 1983, 1997 (First Game) What position did you play? Hooker, Flanker Did you play any other sport under the CBOB banner e.g. Cricket, Basketball or Squash? No "Most Memorable Game and Why" 1997 (50 th year anniversary); I was 14 and remember pulling on the jersey in 4 th grade against Lane Cove for the first time at Roseville. Remember running out to see dad (Dick) in a Lane Cove jersey. Dad knew one of the Lane Cove guys and they were short so he said he would play as long as he could play hooker against me. One scrum, remember receiving a few cheeky upper cuts from the dad. I had the last laugh though as he hit the ball up and I lined him up, BOOM!! Gotta love having the last laugh, especially on the old man. What year did you stop playing? Will be back Did you play for any other clubs? West Harbour, Cottesloe (WA), York (England) Did any other members of your family play for the club (brothers, sons etc?) Dad, Brother Did you hold any executive positions at the club? No Did you coach any sides? No Did you captain any sides? No Did you win any premierships? Yes, 2004 vs. Briars won in extra time Did you go on any club trips or tours? Orange 2004 Are there any great moments or stories you would like to share? Countless. Some of the best was when I was ball boy / water boy, during the 90 s and got picked up on a Saturday morning as a kid with the jerseys. Usually Damian Henry or Dan

Ridley but countless others (Thanks) and would go and spend the day at the rugby, running water etc and then getting to go to all the after match functions at the pubs under age and be involved in it all. Was Dockers your main drinking spot? Crows Nest 2004, but lots of memories at Dockers under age and being hidden from the cops! Dick and Daniel (1997) Vs Lane Cove First Grade Premiers 2004 (Clark Cup) Cottesloe Rugby Club (WA)

The Reading Boys Daniel, Phillip, Dean and Shane (2010) Note: Shane appears in several of the photos with his Dad in Dick s player profile page.

Walking the Kokoda Track and Raising Money for The Commando Welfare Trust (Article contributed by Matt Wilson) Fellow Brothers, Greetings from a St Pius old boy and former CBOB (that dates me). I hope you are in good spirits and enjoying life in our fantastic country and that your life ban from the Orchard Tavern/Dockers/The Charles has now been lifted. Now that I have your attention, I need to ask you for a favour. What? I am walking the Kokoda Track over the week leading up to Anzac Day and will be spending that special day at a place called Isurava. In 1942 a small band of Australian soldiers covered themselves in glory along the length and breadth of "the track" and places like Isurava, Deniki, Kokoda, Imita Ridge and Brigade Hill. You should do yourself a favour and delve into the amazing story that is the Kokoda campaign. I doubt that you will fail to find something in that story to inspire you. Hence, I look forward to flying the Brothers flag at Isurava on 25th April Why? Well, mainly to raise money for disabled young men, widows and orphans but also to mark my retirement from the Army in a truly fitting fashion. I am using the walk to raise public awareness of a charity that is doing a sterling job caring for disabled soldiers, widows and orphans from the modern era of conflict that we have all been living this past decade. The charity that I am walking for is called the Commando Welfare Trust and it sadly has a growing band of constituents.

How? If you would like my eternal gratitude and a picture of me sweating my arse off somewhere between Owers Corner and Kokoda, please donate to the Commando Welfare Trust - So what? Let me know when (not if) you donate and: You and I will drink at least one drink of your choice (on me ). You will be supporting an awesome cause. You can use the sweaty photo of me as a great screen saver. In a somewhat intriguing turn of events, Channel 10's "The Project" will be sending a reporter/camera guy along with our group so expect to see some sweat live at some stage during that week. See you all soon in Sydney later this year. I hope to make it to at least one Brothers game this year. My excursion to Sydney last year for the veterans game was of epic proportions and has taken me the better part of a year to recover from. I might be interested in doing a Brothers run over Kokoda next year - let me know if any of you are interested and mad enough to come for 10 day walk through Australia's modern history. Even better, drag your son/daughter along and show them that dad still kicks arse. I remain your obedient servant, yours aye, Matt Wilson

Editor s Note re Matt Wilson s Article: Look out for Matt s Report on his Kokoda Track experience in next months issue. Dave Bekkeli, Matt Wilson, Ged Tysoe, Michael and Wendy Wren at Brothers Veterans Day 16 July 2011

Mark Diegutis, Michael McKerchar, Simon Bourke and Danny Hanrahan at Brothers Veterans Day July Bob Bain, Tim Gibson, Ian Gibson, Marty Nichols and Tim Bourke

A Look Back at Season 1983 Introduction: After winning the Second Division Club Championship, First grade Barraclough Cup, Runners-up Stockdale Cup, Runners-up Blunt Cup and running 6th in Richardson Cup; the Club was promoted to First Division (Kentwell Cup etc) in See Results 1982:

The Whiddon Cup side coached by Tim Bourke finished 4th in the competition rounds and went on to win their semi-final against Bondi-Bronte 12 9 (Michael Smith 2 tries and Tony Padovan-2 conversions) Unfortunately we lost to Hunters Hill in the Final 10 6 (Greg Nixon- try and Tony Padovan - conversion)

And so we looked to the 1983 season with anticipation and the belief we could achieve an all round improvement and consolidate our position in First Division. See the following extracts from the 1983 Annual Report:

WALLOP S CORNER On trying to stop Phil Horrocks-Taylor: "Every time I went to tackle him, Horrocks went one way, Taylor went the other, and all I got was the bloody hyphen." Nick England There s a spirit in the Wallabies Mere words cannot describe It s as if they had descended from some legendary tribe There s a kinship, a tradition As in days so long since past Of crusades, of knights in armour, of men before the mast. Peter Fenton "You've got to get your first tackle in early, even if it's late." Welsh hardman Ray Gravell explains his rugby philosophy. "If you can't take a punch, you should play table tennis." Former French skipper and Coach Pierre Berbizier illustrates his nation's attitude to on-pitch violence.

"I think Brian Moore's gnashers are the kind you get from a DIY shop and hammer in yourself. He is the only player we have who looks like a French forward." Former England prop Paul Rendall on his front row colleague. "Rugby football is a game I can't claim absolutely to understand in all its niceties, if you know what I mean. I can follow the broad, general principles, of course. I mean to say, I know that the main scheme is to work the ball down the field somehow and deposit it over the line at the other end and that, in order to squalch this programme, each side is allowed to put in a certain amount of assault and battery and do things to its fellow man which, if done elsewhere, would result in 14 days without the option, coupled with some strong remarks from the Bench." P. G. Wodehouse Very Good, Jeeves (1930) "RUGBY the International Game" A photographic celebration by COLIN WHELAN. Text by Pat Booth. Foreword by Ian McGeechan. Hodder & Stoughton, Australia, 1994 (Extract) International Rugby is pride, People, effort, atmosphere, courage, despair, elation. It is crowded stands and the loneliness of injury. It is individual brilliance and team triumphs. It is famous faces and feats. It is old skills and new stars. It is challenge, victory and defeat. It is the speed of backs and the sustained power of forwards. It is the heat of Pacific islands and the cold of Northern Hemisphere stadiums. Reminders of the immediate past, memories for the years ahead.

The South Africans were flying to a tour when their plane lost an engine. The pilot came over the loudspeakers and informed everyone, but insisted that this was alright as they had another and it was more than capable of reaching their destination. As soon as he finished on the microphone the second engine blew and he came back on informing everyone that it was time to make their peace. The South African captain then led his team and others on the plane in prayer. The plane crashed and they all went to heaven. As it happened, this was the day before the annual Heaven versus Hell Rugby match (as those who have played subbies know, ours is also the game they play in hell). God saw his opportunity and called the Devil. G: I was thinking about tomorrow's game and thought of increasing the normal stakes. D: Sure thing, I'm a betting man! G: OK, how about we double the bet to 200 souls? D: Look, I don't mind that, but I'm happy to make it a thousand.

G: Good stuff, one thousand souls it is. D: Deal God sniggered slightly down the 'phone line, which makes the Devil's ears prick up D: You're up to something, I can tell, what is it? G: I might be up to something, but you'll find out tomorrow. D: Look, our bets made and you know I won't back out of it, tell me G: OK, I have the entire Springbok side D: That's alright, did you forget that I still have all the referees! A Rugby Prayer Our beer, which art in kegs Hallowed be thy Sport Thy will be drunk, I will be drunk At home, as it is in the pub Give us each day our daily beverage And forgive us our spillage, as we forgive those who spillest against us Lead us not into wine tasting And deliver us from Tequila For mine is the lager, the chicks and the Rugby Forever and ever. On the Munster pack: "Mothers keep their photo on the mantelpiece to stop the kids going too near the fire." - Jim Noilly, BBC TV (1995) "The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson
