Close studies were undertaken in 2013 with Sue Hodge at Far North District Council which included field availability, hours usage per week and general facilities in relation to playing members at Kerikeri Football Club. At that time it was determined that football in the Kerikeri area was 5 football fields short of where it needed to be. Since that time, player registrations have grown by 20%. The Club now has 500 members which equates to a total of 25 teams playing the game each Saturday morning, as well as 130 children between the ages of 4-8yrs old who learn the skills of the game in the Whole of Football programme. However the number of playing fields and facilities remains the same as it was back in Kerikeri Football Club has now reached absolute capacity and this season has had to turn young players away simply because they do not have the facilities to cope with the numbers. Kerikeri Football Club is now the biggest Football Club in Northland by a considerable margin. The Club pays an Annual Affiliation fee to NFF in the region of $23,000 per Annum, which covers Affiliation to the Federation, Affiliation to New Zealand Football and entry fees for all 25 Teams to enter League Competition. The Club also pays an annual fee of $7000 per annum for use of their current inadequate facilities at Baysport Waipapa, as well as $10,000 per annum 18
5 Additional Supporting Information on new kit and equipment for all of the teams each season. A total of $40,000 per year the Club has to raise before a ball is kicked. Kerikeri Football Club has 3 Senior Teams playing in Northland Competition each season, which, when all playing at Home together on a Saturday afternoon, means 6 teams, 3 of whom have travelled from Whangarei or further to play, yet the Club only has 2 changing rooms, Home & Away, which have to be shared by 3 Teams in each. With 2 small domestic hot water tanks, there is not enough hot water for showers after the games. Lack of facilities is not just a problem for Kerikeri Football Club. Rugby League currently does not have a Kerikeri base, Kerikeri Cricket does not have a base, Kerikeri Athletics also. There is urgent need within the Community for a Sports Hub to be created which could encompass all of these sports. By not providing these facilities for the younger people of Kerikeri and the greater area, we are doing them a dis-service. Much is made particularly in Northland of the high crime rates, the high suicide rates and the poverty in some areas. Sport is the outlet that can make a difference in all of these areas. It brings people, families and communities together. I personally have done alot of work over the previous number of years both with Sue Hodge, and more recently Mark Osborne in trying to move towards securing land for purchase to create such a Sports Hub. Progress was being made and a conditional contract was put to land owners on SH10 just south of Waipapa last year. This has since fallen over and progress has come to a standstill. We need to keep this moving forward with somebody within FNDC picking up the reins and driving this forward. Results in Kaikohe have been outstanding with the rise of Kaikohe FC and progress is being made up in Kaitaia with the Sports Hub progressing well. Fantastic for both areas. Football is the most widely played sport in New Zealand in the 8-12 age group category. In Kerikeri, together we need to provide these young players with the facilities to be proud of. 19

Any other comments - Do you have any other comments you would like us to consider as part of this Long Term Plan Consultation? Kia Ora, The Public Service Association (PSA) would like to make a verbal presentation to the LTP in relation to the following bullet points; The PSA including FNDC Delegates has challenged the FNDC leadership for several years, that we want to be recognised nationally as the best District council in New Zealand yet struggle to get genuine engagement on what we believe should be a shared goal. Our members are subject matter experts in the work they perform and are very aware of the problems besetting FNDC and opportunities available enhance our performance. There have been previous examples of this at FNDC yet dominant personalities have crushed the opportunity to grow a culture where we draw creative solutions from the people most familiar with the problem. There are very few organisations that fully utilise the engagement and creativity of their workforce to full advantage, should FNDC attempt to be one of those? FNDC staff provide service to the community they live in and arguably are naturally committed to being seen by their community as great servants of that community. What potential lies untapped within our people and what resources are needed to enhance their skills. 2110
8 Additional Supporting Information If the workforce is not fully engaged, what is the cost of not addressing that issue? Can you please advise if this is acceptable and if so where and when this could happen? Regards, Mark Furey 2111
