2 General Information About the Centre Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre is located between the River Exe and the Exeter Shipping Canal, close to the Riverside Valley Park, right in the heart of Exeter. Brand new purpose built facilities were completed in July 2013 and now offer Exeter, Devon and the wider community an outdoor and adventurous activity hub which is second to none. As well as full time further education courses the Centre continues to offer and expand its provision to all areas of education, community and youth groups, individuals, families, adults and the corporate sector. The state-of-the-art water-side facilities provide extensive activity areas including a replicated rock climbing wall, a realistic artificial cave system and a 22 metre climbing and abseiling tower with a Powerfan descender. Located within the centre there are numerous meeting and training rooms, including a wet training room, plenty of changing/shower rooms, office and social spaces and of course equipment storage areas. Although there is no on-site parking, Haven Road car park is just a 5 minute walk away from the Centre. Alternatively individuals can be dropped off and observed walking right to the front door of the Centre. All staff are employees of Exeter College and as such each is fully qualified and experienced in their activity area. Additionally, all staff hold a valid first aid award, have attended safeguarding training and have been enhanced DBS checked. The Centre is accredited by many National Governing Bodies. The full list of our recognition and accreditation can be seen below. 1 Summer 2017 The 2017 summer holiday programme once again sees a full and extensive range of outdoor and adventurous activity opportunities, for young people. Multi-Activity Weeks prove really popular, as do our on-site and off-site activity days. We also have Royal Yachting Association sailing and windsurfing and British Canoeing kayaking and canoeing accredited courses where young people work towards national awards. For those wishing to spend a night under canvas our Canoe Camps and Dartmoor Expeditions provide the opportunity to venture by day and spend the night under the stars. Session Times Morning sessions run from 9.30am and afternoon sessions run from 1.30pm 4.30pm. Children on full-day activities are supervised throughout the lunch time period. We also offer the option of an Early Drop Off and Late Collection for busy parents. This means children can be dropped off at the centre from 8.00am in the morning and picked up in the evening right up to 6.00pm. Cost 6 per child per day. What to Bring/Wear All specialist equipment is provided. Children will need to wear old clothes, including footwear, for all water based activities. Please ensure your child brings plenty of clothing suited to the weather conditions. Generally they will need to bring a towel and a complete change of clothes to change into after activities. Wetsuits are only supplied for Windsurfing and Coasteering. However, they can be hired for a small additional fee. Caving will require wellington boots as these are not supplied by the centre. Sun cream, sun hats and a light weight rain coat are also recommended. If your child is attending a full day s activity they will also need to bring a hearty packed lunch with plenty to drink. Unless stated, transport to offsite venues will be provided at no extra cost. Please contact us if you require any further information. Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre is approved by: British Canoeing for kayaking, canoeing, bell-boating and stand up paddleboarding. Royal Yachting Association for sailing, windsurfing and safety/powerboating. National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme for climbing wall activities. The Centre has met all administrative and safety standards as defined by: Ofsted (Reg Number: EY466324) and the Adventure Activity Licencing Authority (AALA). 3 Canoeing & Kayaking Courses Kayaking and Canoeing activities take place on the Exeter Canal and the River Exe with some courses using the local weirs and sections of white-water. Watersports 2

4 Beginners British Canoeing Paddle Power Courses A fantastic fun filled week of one, three or half day sessions working towards a British Canoeing Paddlepower Award. The Paddle Power Passport award consists of 4 progressive levels (level 2-5) which allow young people to learn the basic skills and knowledge of paddlesports. 5 Improvers British Canoeing Paddle Power Courses Developing paddling skills whilst having an enormous amount of fun with friends. The Paddle Power Discover award is the progression from Paddle Power Passport. 4 progressive levels (level 6-9) designed for young paddlers to focus on specific techniques, skills and knowledge. The award reflects fundamental paddlesport skills and understanding for paddle-boat-water interaction. Price includes Paddle Power Discover Progress Card. Taking in the sights, sounds and wildlife whilst paddling down the river. There is the option to shoot Trews and Salmon Pool weirs in kayaks along the way Canoes portage (walk around). After lunch on the river bank, it s across to the Canal for the homeward return to the centre. Some experience an advantage for kayaking. No previous canoeing experience required. 6 Canoe Camping Expeditions - 2 Days, 1 Night 88 A two day, overnight adventure paddling down the river to Turf Locks (tides allowing), to camp. The evening includes BBQ meal, camp games & a campfire to toast marshmallows. The next morning, awake to the Estuary dawn chorus and having had hearty breakfast, strike camp and board canoes for the homeward journey. Our canoe camp are renowned for leaving children with lasting fond memories. All tents and food provided, except packed lunch on the first day. Full camp kit list available online. In fact stand Supping was listed as the most popular outdoor activity among first-time participants. This fantastic board based water sport originated in Hawaii and it now comes to Haven Banks! This full fun filled day will teach the basic strokes, essential safety and of course the obvious fun and games whilst venturing along the River Exe and Exeter Canal. Wetsuits provided. 7 Sailing Courses Two day and week long half day sailing courses for beginners and improvers. Courses work towards RYA Young Sailor Awards using Toppers and Laser Pico s on the River Exe or Exe Estuary. Beginner Sailing Courses 92 Week long, half day courses working towards the Royal Yachting Association Youth Sailing Scheme Awards. These beginner courses take place at Haven Banks on the River Exe using Topper sailing dinghies. Beginner courses focus on building confidence and skills as helms and crew, whilst having enormous amounts of fun along the way! RYA logbooks and handbooks also available at the centre. These improver courses take place from Starcross Yacht Club on the Exe Estuary using Laser Pico s. Individuals meet at Starcross Yacht Club for these courses. 8 Windsurfing One day windsurfing courses. Working through the RYA Junior windsurfing scheme, using stable boards and small rigs. WB3 Week 3 Thurs 10th Aug 9.30am 4.30pm WB5 Week 5 Tues 22nd Aug 9.30am 4.30pm One Day Windsurfing Courses 52 Dartmoor Expedition Two Day Trekking Expedition 88 This two day walking and camping adventure takes you deep in to Dartmoor National Park for an awesome outdoor adventure including trekking, navigation, wild camping and camp cooking. These are great first steps for those interested in doing their Duke of Edinburgh Award or Ten Tors. Participants will need a rucksack, walking boots, sleeping bag, waterproof coat and trousers and packed lunch for the first day. Activities take place on Dartmoor, Haldon, and on the local weirs of the River Exe. Offering children and young people the ultimate adventure. 15 Early Drop Off & Late Collection How to Book 6 per day BOOK ONLINE The Early Drop and/or Late Collection option allows busy parents to leave their children with us from 8.00am and then collect them after activities have finished up until 6.00pm from Monday - Friday. Children not booked in to the Early & Late option are requested to arrive no earlier than 20 minutes before activities start and be collected within 20 minutes of activities finishing. Just visit our website, and click on the Book Now button. Simply create an account for your child or children or sign-in if you already have an account. Then choose your course(s) and quickly and easily book and pay online. You will immediately receive confirmation about the course(s) you have booked. Alternatively, if you would prefer to pay by childcare vouchers simply send us a confirmation from your childcare voucher provider stating the course name, code and date and we will book your child/children on to the requested course(s). If you have any problems please call reception on between 9.00am and 5.00pm Monday - Friday. All relevant information such as clothing lists, information for parents and joining instructions are available to download from the specific course section of our online payment page. If you have any queries about the Centre, its staff or any of the activities, please contact the centre. As parents, carers or guardians, you are more than welcome visit the centre to discuss any queries you might have. Please telephone or us to arrange a visit. There is sometimes availability right up to the start of courses. Just give us a call or visit our website to check availability. Payment of Fees Full payment must be received at the time of booking. Unfortunately, we are unable to reserve places on courses. Payment can be made by credit or debit card either online or by telephone. ( ). Please make cheques payable to Exeter College. Please note that refunds cannot be provided once a child has been booked onto a course. If you are unsure about the suitability of a course please speak to the Centre before booking. The Centre reserves the right to cancel or postpone a course or session in the event of poor up-take, bad weather or any other influencing factor. Should this occur a similar or alternative activity may be offered or at the discretion of the Centre Manager, a full or part refund offered. Childcare Vouchers Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre is registered with Ofsted and, as a registered childcare provider, accepts childcare vouchers towards the payment of our courses. Ofsted registration number EY Special Offers From time to time the Centre provides special offers on courses and activity sessions. Generally, these are provided in the form on online promotions which can be used against online bookings and payments.
