5 Page 5 From Principal cont... Lunch is based off of either 3rd or 4th period teacher depending on the day. If a student has second lunch they will remain with their 3rd/4th hour teacher during that time. If a student has 1st lunch they will go to lunch and then return to their 3rd/4th hour class. Lunch assignments are the same as they currently are on a normal day.

6 Page 6 Health Office How to Avoid Hot Weather Health Emergencies The temperatures are climbing...parents & Guardians need to remind our children to stay hydrated, carry a water bottle and wear cool clothing. Heat-related illness happens when the body s temperature control system is overloaded. Very high body temperatures can damage the brain and other vital organs. Be Prepared in Case of an Emergent Situation! HEAT STROKE Heat Stroke occurs when the body is unable to regulate its temperature. The body s temperatures rise rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. Body temperature may rise to 106 degrees or higher within minutes. It can be fatal. WARNING SIGNS Extremely High Body Temperature 103+ Red, Hot Dry Skin, No Sweating Rapid, Strong Pulse Throbbing Headache Dizziness or Vertigo Nausea Confusion or Delirium Convulsions or Unconsciousness What to Do Get Victim to Shady Area Cool the victim rapidly using whatever methods you can. For example; immerse victim in a tub of cool water, place the person in a cool shower, spray the victim with cool water from a garden hose, sponge the person with cool water, or if the humidity is low, wrap the victim in a cool, wet sheet and fan vigorously. DO NOT GIVE THE VICTIM FLUIDS TO DRINK!

7 Page 7 Health Office cont d HEAT EXHAUSTION Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat-related illness that can develop after several days of exposure to high heat temperatures Warning Signs Excessive Sweating Muscle Cramps Weakness Headache Cool, Moist Skin Paleness Tiredness Dizziness Nausea, Vomiting, Fainting Rapid Pulse Rate What to Do Cool beverages, air conditioned environment, lightweight clothing, cool bath, shower or sponge bath, rest. HEAT CRAMPS SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IF SYMPTOMS WORSEN. Usually affect people who sweat a lot during strenuous activity. This sweating depletes the body s salt and moisture. The low salt level in the muscles may be the cause of heat cramps. Heat cramps are muscle pains or spasms-usually in the hands, calves or feet. Hard tense muscles are also a symptom-that may occur in association with strenuous activity. Discontinue activity, and sit quietly in a cool place. If possible, drink a sport drink, such as Gatorade or juice. Seek medical attention if cramps last longer than an hour. HEAT RASH Heat rash is a skin irritation caused by excessive sweating during hot, humid weather. It can occur at any age but is most common in children. Heat rash looks like a red cluster of pimples or small blisters and is more likely to occur on the neck and upper chest, groin, under the breasts, and in elbow creases. Keep the area affected dry. Dusting powder may be used to increase comfort. The Health Office will gladly accept donations of bottled water to issue to students who are overheated, ill, experiencing diabetic difficulties or simply need hydration. Please consider helping our Knights. The students & health office would very much appreciate your generosity!
