July- August 2017 Hello Elk Grove! We hope you re staying cool in these dog days of summer! In this month s newsletter, we ll cover upcoming meetings, Fourth of July (safety and preparedness), recap of Regional Safety Day, National Night Out, Crime Prevention Did You Knows, and general heat related illness guideline and preventative measures. UPCOMING MEETINGS (Mark Your Calendars!) Our Neighborhood Watch Captains Semi-Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday June 27 th at 6:00 PM in the City Council Chambers. On the agenda for the evening will be Fireworks Safety, an Identity theft and Scam update, and National Night Out registration information. If you are interested in forming a Neighborhood Watch or want information on joining an existing group in your neighborhood please contact: Crimeprevention@elkgrovepd.org The Paws on Patrol introduction meeting is returning on Thursday June 29 th at 6:00 PM in the City Council Chambers. Paws on Patrol is an extension of our successful Neighborhood Watch program here in Elk Grove. It is an effective tool to deter criminal activity from occurring and raises resident s level of awareness within their community. We re sending a message that would-be criminals are barking up the wrong tree here in Elk Grove.

Regional Safety Day in Elk Grove Park was a tremendous success! We ll see you all next year! The 2nd Annual Regency Safety Day The Elk Grove Police Department and the Cosumnes Fire Department were proud to Co-host the 2nd Annual Regional Safety Day on Saturday, June 10, Regional Safety Day (RSD) was a free event where the region s emergency response agencies had the opportunity to meet residents, show off their equipment, and discuss safety. This year we were blessed with near perfect weather, as an estimated 2,500 guests attended. Besides the vehicles and booths, there were demonstrations including two emergency response helicopters landing, a Jaws of Life extrication, K9, motorcycle, and fire extinguisher demonstrations. Thank you to everyone who visited us. We look forward to hosting the 3rd Annual Regional Safety Day in June, See you there!

WHAT IS NATIONAL NIGHT OUT? National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police, fire personnel and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August. Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, and much more. In addition to increasing awareness of crime and drug prevention programs, NNO also strengthens neighborhood spirit and community-police partnerships, while sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime! If you and your neighbors would like the Elk Grove Police Department and the Cosumnes Fire Department to visit your neighborhood block party on Tuesday August 1, 2017, click on the following link: www. Registration will be available through July 25 th The form may be mailed scanned and ed to crimeprevention@elkgrovepd.org, or delivered to the Elk Grove Police Department, attention National Night Out, 8400 Laguna Palms Way, Elk Grove CA Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee that an officer, or fire department representative, will be in attendance. Since these first responders are on-duty, calls for service might prevent their participation. If you have any questions, please contact the Crime Prevention unit at (916) or the above .

Did You Know? (Crime Prevention Tips) Identity Theft: Each year, millions of Americans have their identities stolen by criminals who use a victim s identifying information to commit financial fraud. Identity theft is a serious crime. It can disrupt your finances, credit history, and reputation, and take time, money, and patience to resolve. To protect yourself: Keep birth certificates, social security cards, and other personal documents secure Don t respond to unsolicited s, phone calls, or door to door sales Check your credit report for any inaccuracies or accounts opened without your permission. You can order a free credit report at or call If you think your credit has been violated, put a fraud alert on your account with each of the three credit agencies; Equifax , Experian , and TransUnion Burglary Prevention Tip Door Knockers Burglars are chickens. They really don t want to meet anyone inside a house. When they are choosing a house to burglarize, they will almost always knock on the front door first to see if anyone is home. If someone knocks on your door, there is no law that says you must open it, but please let them know you are inside. You can do things like: Yell through the door Who is it?, How can I help you?, or even I m busy right now. If you don t want to yell, consider making noise by turning on a TV or radio, or running a vacuum cleaner. You can also try flashing the porch light. Register Your Security Camera on CrimeReports.com Have you checked out the Crime Reports website ( This is a free tool the EGPD uses. Crime Reports provides a searchable map of nearly every crime report taken by the EGPD (a few types of reports are omitted to protect the victims). While it won't give you all of the details of the report, it will tell you the type of crime, approximate location, time and date. It's a great site for keeping track of what is happening in your neighborhood. An additional benefit of Crime Reports is the ability to register a security camera. If you have a security camera that faces the street or sidewalk, please register it on Crime Reports. What this does is provide our detectives with a list of houses with exterior cameras. So, if something big were to happen in your area (and we hope it doesn't), a detective might contact you and ask if your camera may have captured a suspect or vehicle. It does NOT give us the ability to see your camera in any way. It only provides us with a list of houses with cameras. If such a big incident does happen, the time saved in searching for houses with cameras could make or break a case. Registering a camera is free, but you do have to fill in information. Look for the link on the top right corner of the site.

Fireworks Season is Rapidly Approaching It is fireworks season, and even though we are not in quite the drought we were last year at this time, everything is still dry and could burn easily. Be sure to be extra careful as we celebrate. Here is some info on fireworks to keep in mind: The only legal fireworks are what the California Fire Marshal deems Safe and Sane. All Safe and Sane fireworks have the Fire Marshal insignia on them, as seen here. Also, any fireworks purchased from one of the many booths (Phantom and TnT fireworks) are Safe and Sane. These are the fireworks booths seen all over, generally run by a charity group. Examples of illegal fireworks are ones that shoot into the air before exploding, and ones with overly large explosives (such as M80 s). If you know of someone or a specific location which is preparing to set off or setting off illegal fireworks, please call 911. Fireworks stands may sell fireworks starting on June 28. Fireworks may be legally set off until July 05. It is hot and dry, so be sure you have a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water ready when you set off fireworks. Looking for a safe way to watch fireworks? The City of Elk Grove is sponsoring a Salute to the Red, White, and Blue at Elk Grove Park on Tuesday, July 04. The fireworks show began at 9:30 pm. Admission to the park is free, but parking is $10 per car. Be warned that the park will be very crowded, and it will take you a long time to get out of the park afterwards. There will be special traffic controls in place (all streets around the park are made one-way) and officers will be directing traffic, but it could still take over an hour to get away. HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE 4 th of JULY!

STAYING SAFE IN THE HEAT It s no secret that it is a scorcher out there. Do your best to stay cool. If you exercise outside, consider going super early in the morning (when it is nice and cool, and quiet), or later in the evening. DOG WALKERS If you are a dog walker, before you take Fido out, place the back of your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds. If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it s too hot for the dog. Early morning or evening walks are the best bet in this heat, but be sure to check the pavement temperature even if the outside temperature has started to cool. Pavement can retain heat into the evening. Side note: If you are a dog walker and not part of Paws on Patrol, we are having another intro meeting next Thursday, 6/29, at 6:00 PM at the PD. More details will be in a separate post. COOLING STATION The Wackford Center is open as a cooling station from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM until Friday June 23. They are located at 9014 Bruceville Road, Elk Grove, phone Animals are not allowed in the center at this time. Water will be provided in the front lobby of the main entrance. Hang on Elk Grove, this heat wave will pass eventually. Until then, stay hydrated and stay cool! HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE this are two conditions people can suffer in the heat. Attached is a useful graphic to remember the symptoms and treatments. Please feel free to share it. In summary, they are: HEAT EXHAUSTION Symptoms: Dizziness, excessive sweating, cool clammy skin, rapid weak pulse, muscle cramps, and nausea. Treatment: Get to a cool place, drink water, use cold compresses or a cool shower. HEAT STROKE Symptoms: Headache, no sweating, red dry skin, rapid strong pulse, and nausea. Treatment: Call 911 and cool the person until medics arrive. That s all for this month. Stay safe Elk Grove!
