1 The Trojans 19, Tigers 14 Trojan Rule Vol. 10, No. 4 - Oct. 2, 2017 A biweekly publication of Subiaco Academy Subiaco, Arkansas At the beginning of the game the Trojan defense forced the Tigers to a punt in the first series, something the Trojans would do five more times throughout the game. The Trojans were also able to create two turnovers, one an interception returned 18 yards by Gage Lee and the second, a fumble recovery by Haeven Patterson who also had 5 tackles on the night. The co-defensive players of the game were Thomas Bourgeios with 12 tackles, 2 sacks, a pass breakup and a tackle for a loose and Patrick Richardson who had 8 tackles, a sack, with one of his tackles for a loss of yards. Other notable defensive players were Tom Johns with 5 tackles and Thomas Myers with 4 tackles. The September 22 Homecoming game matched the Subiaco Trojans against their first conference opponent of the season. When these two teams met a year ago in West Fork, the outcome was not what the Trojans had practiced for, losing that game This year the Trojans prevailed, winning Three times the Trojans were able to make it into the end zone, the first time with a 1:28 left in the first quarter when Gage Lee caught a pass from Luke Hertlein for a 77 yards touchdown. The second score came with 11:26 left in the second quarter when Hertlein optioned to the right of the field and found an opening and ran the ball 26 yards. The final score would wait until the 4th quarter game when Dodge Mendenhall set the touchdown up with a 42-yard run. On the next play, the offensive play of the game, Hertlein found Thomas Myers coming left across the field, completed the pass and Myers ran it into the end zone. The offensive player of the game was Luke Hertlein with 103 yards passing and 73 yards rushing. He was also involved in all three of the Trojan touchdowns, throwing both of the TD passes and running the other for a touchdown. The Trojans lost 42-0 to the Dover Pirates on September 29. 2 7th and 8th grade retreat Escape Room On Saturday, September 16th, several students took a trip to the Fort Smith Escape Room. The students were divided into 3 teams, sent into various rooms (Pirates/Treasures... Sherlock... Etc.) and given one hour to solve clues and mysteries. The only way they could escape was to work closely as a team. They all enjoyed and afterwards, we went out to eat. On Wednesday, September 20th the 7th and 8th grade classes participated in their annual retreat. After the opening mass by Fr. Patrick, they traveled to the Ozark National Forest northeast of Hagarville. The group arrived mid-morning at Haw Creek Falls and spent time exploring the falls and surrounding area. Lunch was hot dogs cooked over an open fire. After the meal the group hiked to Pam s Grotto, a beautiful thirty-seven-foot seasonal waterfall surrounded by house sized boulders. The trail took them up a forested hillside and along a large sandstone bluff. While there, Fr. Patrick led the boys in a prayer service and period of reflection on the retreat theme of Perseverance. According to Rob Pugh It was a rewarding experience for both students and the participating adults. Junior High football Ham radio The Amateur Radio club constructed and used the antennae to make radio contact with Mr. Don Goetz KG5LKO. Mr. Goetz was in Clarksville and the boys set up at Founders Court to make the contact. Pictured are Jack Upchurch, Haegen Hess KG5HOR and Duvall Moore. The young Trojans lost 8-0 to the Dover Pirates on September 28. Leading the Subiaco offense was Payne Lee with 60 rushing yards and Jackson Cobb with 45 yards on the ground. Adam Ackel and Cobb led the defensive effort. On September 21 the Junior High football team played the West Fork Tigers. Leading the Trojans on offense were Payne Lee with 50 yards rushing and a touchdown and Alec Highfield who rushed 4 times for 25 yards. On the defense the leader was Nick Tayn who had four tackles, a sack, and a tackle for a loss. A host of other Trojans including Jackson Cobbs (6 Tackles), Alec Highfield (4 Tackles), Payne Lee (4 Tackles), and Bear Moore (4 Tackles) assisted the defense in their efforts to hold the Tigers to 28 points. Although the Trojans struggled during the game, in the fourth quarter there was a bright spot. The second string players were able to mount an attack against the Tiger s defense. With an offensive line completely manned by 7th and 8th grade players, Payne Lee was able to score the lone Trojan touchdown of the night on a 27 yard run.

3 Opponents fall to Trojans The Trojan tennis team beat the Clarksville Panthers 6-0 on September 18. Andrew Eveld, Matthew Stites, and Vincent Le won singles matches. In doubles Eveld and Remy were victorious, as were Le/Goldtrap, and Stites/Haunert. On September 19 Subiaco overcame Prairie Grove and Dardanelle 3-2, with wins by Remy/Eveld and Le/Haunert in doubles and Goldtrap in singles. On September 21 in matches with Pottsville and Mena, Anthony Lam, Vincent Le and Tyler Moran won singles matches. On September 28 Subiaco beat the Booneville tennis team 5-1. Lam, Le, and Goldtrap won singles matches. Eveld/Remy and Moran/Lam won doubles matches. Commended Quiz bowl victories Headmaster Mike Berry announced today that Diego Calvillo has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Subiaco won two senior high quiz bowel matches against Magazine on September 17. The score from the first match was 180 to 30 with Diego Calvillo being the highest scorer for Subiaco with 60 points. In the second match, the score was 140 to 40. Diego again was the highest scorer with 90 points. Subiaco s junior high team also won two matches and Top scorers for Subiaco were Max Linares, Jaxon Perreault, Andrew Bui, and Anthony Do. The novice should be clearly told all the hardships and difficulties that will lead him to God. If he promises perseverance in his stability, then after two months have elapsed let this rule be read straight through to him, and let him be told: This is the law under which you are choosing to serve. If you can keep it, come in. If not, feel free to leave. If he still stands firm, he is to be taken back to the novitiate, and again thoroughly tested in all patience. After six months have passed, the rule is to be read to him, so that he may know what he is entering. If once more he stands firm, let four months go by, and then read this rule to him again. If after due reflection he promises to observe everything and to obey every command given him, let him then be received into the community. But he must be well aware that, as the law of the rule establishes, from this day he is no longer free to leave the monastery, nor to shake from his neck the yoke of the rule which, in the course of so prolonged a period of reflection, he was free either to reject or to accept. (The Procedure for Receiving Brothers Chapter 58:7-16) Probably most of us have had occasion to say I didn t know what I was getting myself into. It should be clear from the passage above that Benedict s directions should all but eliminate this from being the case when someone makes the solemn decision to enter a monastery. The novice is repeatedly tested and given instructions in the Rule. In Benedict s time many novices were not literate, so reading the Rule to them was a necessity. Monastic vows are for life, but under serious circumstances, a monk may be released from his vows. Perhaps for us this will serve as a reminder that we are called to stick with things to seek God in our lives despite hardships, difficulties and trials. Jesus promises us eternal life, but certainly hardships on the way as well. We make vows and commitments in marriage, family, careers and in our relationships with others. It is important for us to be eager for the work of God and to honor our promises to God and others. Deacon Roy Goetz, Academy Chaplain
