1 Office Talk It is half time in the 2011 Office Talk MPNFL season and time to assess where we are at as players, clubs, competitions and as a league. In general the MPNFL is rolling along nicely. Highlights to date include the magnificent interleague win over the Ovens & Murray League by the MPNFL Sharks along with a successful start to netball in Peninsula League after a long and, at times frustrating, set-up period. Congratulations to all those at every club who have had both the foresight and determination to be the trail-blazers in this effort. Netball now looks to be embedded in all three leagues and we are sure that all clubs will benefit from this now and in the future. A quick snapshot of club administrators and others who frequent the office also suggests that games across all three competitions have generally been well supported in relation to crowds. That is particularly the case in so-called big games each round, and most of those contests have lived up to the hype surrounding them. There have been exceptions to that of course, and it is up to every club to encourage their members and supporters to be part of the club and make a winter afternoon at the local footy a ritual, as it has been across the district for generations past. Cranbourne is again the team to beat in the Casey Cardinia League, but contenders are still lining up and, as usual, the competition for a spot in the five in that league is likely to go down to the wire. In Peninsula League Frankston YCW has put on a display of dominance seldom seen anywhere, but the fact that it is only half ay through the season will keep rival coaches plotting their downfall for a fair few weeks to come yet. Over in Nepean League there has been a bit of a reshuffle with Rye s strong recruiting campaign paying off to date. This looks to be the most even of the three leagues on paper and there is plenty of water to flow under the bridge yet. Overall on-field behaviour has been satisfactory to date but there is always room for improvement, particular in the under 18s and Colts competitions. For some reason this problem often occurs as the colder and shorter days set in and coaches and player mentors at every club need to emphasise the importance of playing within both the rules and the spirit of the game to all sides at this juncture. In the end, missing a game or games because of a thoughtless or undisciplined act is just plain stupid. Finally, congratulations to coach Shona Osborne and the MPNFL Netball side who represented the league so proudly at last weekend s W. M. Loud tournament at the State Netball Centre. Our girls finished with a 3 win 2 loss record from their five games on Sunday and finished second in their pool, just missing progression to the finals round. Good luck to all clubs this weekend. facebook.com-mpnfl TEXT AROUND THE GROUND 1/4 BY 1/4 FOOTY SCORES TO 3RPP HOTLINE 04299FOOTY that s Disclaimer & Copyright All editorial material and photographs are prepared by the MPNFL Media Relations Office, published in the MPNFL Football Record are subject to copyright laws and may not be reproduced without the permission of the MPNFL. 3 Historians 10 years ago today This week we look back some 10 years to football as it was June 23rd 2001 according to the record of the day. The Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League operated under 3 grades Premier, Peninsula and Nepean with promotion relegation applied between the 3 competitions. At round 9 the half way mark of the season in Premier had the ladder headed by Karingal with 8 wins, then Mornington, Chelsea and Rosebud all 6 wins. Outside the four was YCW with 5 wins and a draw, Pines 5 wins followed by Hastings 4 and a draw then Rye 3, Edi Asp 1 win and on the bottom without a victory was Hampton Park. In Peninsula League 8 rounds had been played Mt Eliza on top with 7 wins then Seaford with 6, Tyabb and Doveton 5 wins made up the four. Narre Warren and Frankston were next on 4 wins, followed by Devon Meadows, Cranbourne and Berwick on 3 and Keysborough without a win. The Nepean Division ladder was headed by Crib Point with 8 wins from 9 games ahead of Bonbeach by a game, then on 6 wins were Langwarrin and Pearcedale. Outside the four were Sorrento and Somerville with 5 wins then Dingley on 4, Red Hill 3, Carrum Downs 1 and Dromana without a win. As you can see lots of change has occurred in the ten years two clubs gone Dingley and Carrum Downs whilst we have added Pakenham, Beaconsfield, ROC and Tooradin. Many changes of leagues have occurred in just one decade, what will the next ten years bring, that is the question? Looking at the coaches in 2001 it is interesting to see 2 coaches remain and ironically they are both back after time at the helm at other clubs Tony Blackford and Mark Hustwaite. In Premier League Rye was led by Paul Williams, Karingal Dean Burnell, Mornington Simon Goosey, Pines Brendan Moore, Hampton Park Mick O Brien and Peter Wood, Rosebud Mark Hustwaite, YCW Peter Freeman, Hastings Leigh Carpenter, Edi Asp, Brett Wright and Chelsea Paul Hopgood. In Peninsula the leaders were Frankston Tony Blackford, Berwick, Jack Marshall, Keysborough Dave Paten, Cranbourne Mick Fogarty, Devon Meadows, Rod Keogh, Seaford, Sean Millane, Narre Warren Peter Bastinac, Doveton Stuart Batten, Tyabb Eddie Fischer, Mt Eliza John Dugdale. Whilst in Nepean, Crib Point Andrew Shannon, Bonbeach Mick Hill, Red Hill Shane Rayment, Sorrento Ken Ingram, Pearcedale Matthew Benwell, Langwarrin Paul Gay, Dingley Paul Garden, Somerville Paul Smit, Carrum Downs Tony Rowe and Dromana Alan Meaney. The local tipsters were Macca, Wing and Prayer, Phanton, Tea Lady and Toe Punt Leading the goal kicking in Premier was Danny Mc Carthy of Chelsea in the seniors, Matthew Meagher of YCW reserves and Robbie Lancaster Chelsea in the unders. The Peninsula leaders were Steve Tobin Doveton seniors, Steven Stokes Doveton reserves and Christopher Lacey Keysborough in the under 18 s. In Nepean the goal table was headed by George Gorozidis Bonbeach in the seniors, Matthew Poore Langwarrin in the reserves and Luke Ellery of Somerville in the unders. The player of the year awarded by the goal umpires was led by David George Karingal in Premier, Mark Glenn Mt Eliza in Peninsula and Clint Sylvio Sorrento in Nepean. Looking at some of the names playing in the Under 18 s at each club throws up several who have gone on to be prominent senior players and not always at their home club, just a few from Premier League at Chelsea were Joseph Garner and Rob Lancaster, at Edi Asp Beau Turner, Hampton Park Kevin Mc Lean and Nathan Dawes, Hastings Richie Vandenham, Karingal Ryan Jencke, Mornington Byron Murphy, Jason Matthews, Chris Paxino and Michael Gillis, Pines Chris Guganovic, Rosebud Tom Miller and Ryan Spooner, Rye Andrew Dunn and YCW Daniel Waddell. In Peninsula we had Tim Joustra at Berwick, Devon Meadows Jess Dehey, Andrew Cotton, Scott Young, Aaron Pike and Ryan Davey, Doveton Aaron Henwood and Callum Pattie, Frankston Shawn Wilkie, Matt Wells and Shane Vandervalk, Mt Eliza Darren Booth and Adam Lourey, Narre Warren Kim Aboujaber, Daniel Field, Michael Mc Gill, Clay Peresso and Michael Collins, Seaford Dean Kemble and Joe Hallal, Tyabb Hayden Turner, and at Keysborough Chris Capsalis, Sean Witherden and Mark Osborne. In Nepean we had Brad Watson and Michael Cook at Crib Point, Dromana Paul Minchington and Michael Hunter, Somerville Lee Martin and Daniel Boyd, Sorrento Heath Cameron, Ben Winters Kerr, Ben Mc Cormack, Scott Cameron and Trevor Mattison, Red Hill Aaron Holmes and Michael Holmes, Bonbeach Sam Rouette, Langwarrin Brett Harris whilst Carrum Downs and Pearcedale did not have sides. Looking at the tribunal it was a busy week with 16 cases on the agenda most accepting the two weeks, notables of the day appearing were Troy Shannon, Juan Merchan, Steve Coates, Karem Baskaya, Justin Hamilton, Jason Lowe, Cam Holzer, Dean Mc Carthy and Lee Palmer. Little Arnie was still a feature of the record which was free with entry of $7.00. Since 1908 MPNFL 5

5 Peninsula Preview TIGERS PURRING ON a three-game tear, SEAFORD should continue its surge up the ladder by beating LANGWARRIN today. If the Tigers can get over the second-bottom Langy, they then play three of their next four games at home. By mid-july, the Tigers could really be snarling. Seaford showed great spirit last week to come from five goals down at half-time and beat Bonbeach by 7 points. Michael Kraska has really hit his straps and Dean Kemble played his best game of the season last week. Langwarrin has been disappointing so far, registering only one win, and must somehow find a spark. Youngsters Jarryd Amalfi and Andy Johnson have provided a rare ray of hope while former Frankston and Seaford star Kane Taylor has been Langy s best player. But they need support. After looming as a top-three contender on the back of a 4-1 start to the season, EDITHVALE-ASPENDALE has got the wobbles in recent weeks, dropping two of its past three. A 107-point thumping from YCW last week was a stark reality check. Today, Troy Shannon s Eagles get the chance to regroup get back on the winner s list when they host cellar dweller MORNINGTON. Unbeaten in four home games this season, Edi-Asp should be able to post a sizeable win today to be poised strongly at 6-3 at the halfway mark. Look for exciting youngster Bradley Tagg to add to his 26 goals while Nick Connellan and Tim Mannix showed good form against YC last week. Mornington has threatened to win a game but has still had no joy, although the slick form of Keith O Brien, Kyle Brouwer and Scotty Matthews has pleased Bulldogs fans. CHELSEA completed a stunning 191-point turnaround in the space of seven days last week when it thumped Mornington by 84 points. Back in second spot, the Seagulls can entrench themselves as the main danger to YCW by beating PINES today. Chelsea has had the wood on the Pythons for several years. You have to go back to the first half of the 2008 season to find the last time Pines beat the Gulls. Coming off their season-best score, Jason Chapple s Seagulls should have too much fire power for the young Pythons. Chris Worner and Luke Damon have kicked 45 goals between them and will cause the Pythons defence concerns today. Pines have had a challenging month, coming up against YCW, Karingal and now Chelsea, and although they haven t quite measured up they continue to earn respect. Jimmy Messina is back to the blistering form he showed before getting injured last season while recruit Michael Curcio has provided a presence up forward with 17 goals. MT ELIZA meets the mighty FRANKSTON YCW today in the first of four consecutive games for the Redlegs at their temporary home base at Alexandra Park. While the Mounties would have been buoyed by its spirited win over Langwarrin last week, it s hard to see them worrying the undefeated Stonecats who haven t had a loss in over a year. However, it will be interesting to see how YC goes without their champion ruckman Ash Eames, who injured his knee last week. Depth is YCW s strength, though, and you d expect the likes of Dale Carroll, Steve Meagher or Brad Ulms to step up. Awesome, the Stonecats have won five of their past six games by 102 points or more. At Ballam Park, KARINGAL and BONBEACH will battle it out for a top-three spot at the halfway mark of the season. 6 Peninsula Preview Both enter the game with 5-3 records, having put announced themselves as finals contenders. Karingal probably should have won its past five. As it is the Bulls have won their past four and lost the other by a point when they had their chances to win. Brendan Dunne has his side going well and they are always harder to beat on their home turf. The Bulls did stitch-up Bonbeach twice last season, but the Sharks are better this year and will be keen to atone. One of Bonbeach s strengths this season has been its wide range of goal-kicking options. Four players have kicked 13 goals or more, while the fearless, in-andunder style of Daniel Smith has set a high standard for all Sharks. With Karingal again without Brendon Lade, you sense this is Bonbeach s chance to take the Bulls scalp. STONECATS FIGHT IN THE UNDER 18s FRANKSTON YCW showed plenty of fight to get the points last week, with Ash Fenech and Tom Hoeft leading the way. Now the Stonecats can move into the top three by beating MT ELIZA. SEAFORD had a strong win last week and loom as a sneaky hope against LANGWARRIN, especially if Chris Brooking, Anthony Caruso and Brendan Doyle maintain their hot form. A narrow loss hurt EDITHVALE-ASPENDALE last week and they can expect a tough contest from MORNING- TON, which dropped its first game last week. CHELSEA should boost its finals hopes by beating PINES. SEAGULLS SOAR IN THE RESERVES CHELSEA played some of its best footy of the season early last week and a repeat would see the Seagulls account for PINES. Matt Gardiner struck form last week while Matt Elliott and premiership player Patrick Donnellan continue to play starring roles. KARINGAL has run into form but faces a stern challenge against third-placed BONBEACH. Pleasingly for the Bulls, promising players Justin Smith, Jack Johnson and Aaron Jack have been kicking goals and leading the charge. SEAFORD will struggle against an impressive LANG- WARRIN, who have been ignited by Aaron Shaw (8 goals last week), Shane Boyington and Matty Poore. MT ELIZA has been struggling and will find it hard against unbeaten FRANKSTON YCW. There won t be a lot between EDITHVALE-ASPENDALE and MORNINGTON, a couple of genuine finals contenders. Reserves managed only two goals in their 79pt loss with coach Paul Wilson describing the team as the weirdest that he has ever coached and he wasn t joking. Congratulations to Chelsea FC on reaching 100 years of competition but we cannot of course wish you all the best for today. We first played the Gulls in the very first game of 1984, the year that we were promoted to the higher grade MPFL and we were defeated. It was a bitter start but we battled on, made amends for that loss in Rd 10, made the grand final (our fifth in a row) but lost out to Morn ton. Today we meet for the 59th time (won 27, lost 30, 1d) so let s improve on that. Our highest snr goals was by Reegan Stubbs,12 in Rd 18, Young Nath Swanborough may be still out for a few weeks according to his dad Peter, one of our senior trainers. Did you know that Peter played 108 senior games with Crib Point before coming to Pines, playing 18 reserves games (2004,05). Sort of puts the lid on that old adage of trainers don t know how to play football. Keep up the good work Peter and if you need advice see Bourbon Breath but keep your hands in your pockets. The Yarra cruise dinner dance July 2 is followed on July 23 with the ever popular Pines Idol Nite. You may have noticed that the notice that on the noticeboard is now noticeably missing. Some of the acts entered on the page looked exciting and it may just be that Lance and Peter will need to be on duty. A personal request, could the officials and players engaged in the thoughtless act of dumping, dropping or throwing club jumpers on the change room floor please refrain from doing so. Not only is it sacrilege but also a disgrace upon the jumper that you should be proud of. Welcome to new sponsor, Jetts Fitness Centre. You ll see me there on the Roman rings, it s great. Best were Watto, Mark, Ryan A, Tom, Gus and Nev. The reserves had their chances in the game against the ladder leaders and are moving along well at this stage of the season. In the best Zac, Poyas, Bow, Woody, Stu and Mini. The seniors started well but were unable to maintain the pressure and lost to a better side on the day. Better players Whooper, Jamo, Blue, Craigy, Minse and Azza. We are in need of more helpers and workers at the club. We have a few fantastic volunteers, but more are needed. Supporters, members, mums and dads: you are needed to assist and give us a hand on Saturdays. We are having trouble getting our canteen fully staffed and there are plenty of small or big jobs to choose from! Parents and friends of the Colts, we also need your help on Saturdays mornings. A super night at the Ball last Saturday Well done to Youngy and Pookie for getting over 180 people there. All the best to Nick Cattanach on his 100th game for the MEFC today. Congrats to Smaley and Scarps on their Senior debuts a couple of weeks ago, making 15 debutants in We wish the following players all the best with their injuries sustained over the past two weeks Pookie, Reesy, Collo, Matty Pascazio and Brocky. The Seniors, hit hard by injuries to key players and a couple out early in the game stuck to their task valiantly to defeat Langy by 4 goals in a great team performance. The Skipper was brilliant in defence, Langers was everywhere and Simmo, Heasa, Wetters and Youngy were dominant throughout the day and night! The Reserves kicked two early goals but that was it for the day as they were soundly beaten. Thanks to the U/18 boys that filled in once again. Patto was good all day and Jimmy Rees, Alby and Tim Koleits tried hard. Great to see Jaye Kurts back, combining with his brothers Nick and Zac for the first time. The Under 18 s struggled to score early in the slippery conditions, but never gave in. Better players were Zak Jones up from the U/16 s, Cal Dunlop, Charlie Pascazio, Colby and Drummo. The Colts fell just short and the unders snuck their nose in front on the line in very trying conditions at the Butler Oval. Unfortunately Jack Wheeler and Jake Neuchew suffered serious injuries during the game and we wish them both all the best with their recovery. The Reserves and Seniors completed the day with solid wins against fellow top 5 aspirants in windy conditions at Frankston Park. Kyle Hutch and Tony Lester were good all day for the seniors as was Jesse Savage and Shane Blick for the Reserves. It was great to see some familiar faces back watching the Stonecats with the boys from the 2001 Reserves team celebrating their 10 year premiership reunion. From all reports the celebrations kicked on until 3am the next morning. Some things never change. Apparently a club champion and former skipper of the club lead the celebrations even though he didn t play in the team! Final call for the club s Gala Ball being held next Saturday night at the Frankston RSL. If you haven t booked your seat, want extra tickets or have to pay for your ticket please see Laf today otherwise I can guarantee you will miss out on what s traditionally a memorable night. 15 VCFL Message VCFL State Teams Getting Set For Country v City Clash With the conclusion of the senior interleague matches in the WorkSafe Country Championships and a number of stand-alone fixtures across the state, we have now turned our attention to assembling the finest footballers from all regions into our three state teams to wear the Country Big V. State representation is the highest level of achievement a player can have within the VCFL system, and is a tremendous feather in the caps of the players selected. This year many players will get their first opportunity to represent the state, while other will build on impressive records with another showing in the Big V. Whatever the scenario, it is reward for effort and dedication to their football. The same can be said for the umpiring panels selected on the day. The best performing umpires from across the regions will be blowing the whistle for these matches. The VCFL are very proud to be able to field our three teams this year to play the Victorian Amateur Football Association on Saturday July 9th at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton. The clashes always have a little of the country vs. city mystique about them, and the recent contests have been closely run clashes. The last two senior results have swung on the final kick of the day. The VAFA team has recently returned from Adelaide as National Amateur Champions, while our VCFL Vic1 team is the reigning national country champion, won in Canberra last year. This year s main game at Deakin Reserve has some grounds to be touted as The Championship of Community Football. Some 34 senior leagues have been represented by players in the initial training squads for all three sides. It is a testament to the hard work of the selectors and coaches that they are able to select from right across the state, giving as many footballers as possible the opportunity to train and play with the best players from across the state. There have been some slight changes to the selection models for our Vic Country state teams this year. Traditionally our VCFL teams were chosen as follows: Senior Team (Major Leagues), District Team (District Leagues) and U19 team. To increase the scope and competitiveness of what was formerly known as the District Team, this squad has been chosen from WorkSafe Country Championship teams ranked (2011) as well as all other Senior Leagues (even if they are not competing in the Work- Safe Country Championships). This team is now known as GrainCorp VCFL 2. The aim of the change is twofold: - to increase the strength of the 2011 GrainCorp VCFL 2 team and, - to enable players who commit to represent their leagues in the WorkSafe Country Championships, in teams which are ranked in the lower half of competing leagues, with the ability to represent the WorkSafe VCFL. The 2011 Graincorp VCFL2 training squad has been drawn from 22 leagues across the VCFL. North Central legend John Cossar is head coach of this team this year, ably supported by Gil Ould, Luke Beattie, Andrew Sutton and Bruce Petering as assistant coaches and selectors. John Hallam is the team manager. They play the representative side from Divisions C-D4 in the Ammo s. The WorkSafe VCFL Vic1 team can now selected from all registered players who represent their leagues in the WorkSafe Country Championships. This year s training squad is dominated by players from the top ten leagues in the WorkSafe Country Championships. Peter Knights continues his role at the helm of the VCFL Vic1 team, with crucial support from Terry Harding, Steve Hammond, Joe McLaren and Stuart Gay. All these coaches have a long connection with the VCFL State program and are passionate supporters of representative football. The U19 Representative team is again being led by Damian Sexton and the selection criteria has not changed, being able to choose from all WorkSafe VCFL players eligible by virtue of their age. Sexton is assisted by an all star country coaching panel of Tony Tranter, Andy Quenault, Justin Peckett, Marc Quarell and Russell Ednie. Given the attention being paid by AFL selectors to players who may be late bloomers, or slipped through the TAC Cup net this game and these coaches have a tantalising role to play in selecting and grooming the best crop of new talent ready to slot into AFL lists. Action kicks off at Deakin Reserve on Saturday July 9th at 10:30am, and will finish in the twilight with the main game. Please visit the VCFL website for further information on selected sides and fixtures. For those that can t make it to Shepparton for the big clashes against the Ammo s, the VCFL will be streaming both the radio call and the live vision from Deakin Reserve from 10:30am through the VCFL website. Under 18 s started the day with a very important game against Bon beach who had been travelling very well the game was very close throughout the four quarters with Bon beach hitting the lead late in the game all looked lost to the boys credit they worked very hard in the final stages of the quarter to gain the lead back and record a one point win. The Reserves came up against a determined Bonbeach which has been the case over the years when these two sides meet some wayward shots a t goal was probably the difference in the end we just didn t hurt them on the scoreboard which resulted in a win to Bonbeach. The seniors saw a game of two halves trailing by 8 goals at half time some changes to the side and faith in their ability turned the tide at ¾ time scores were level at the end of the game Seaford had run over the top of Bonbeach to record one of the most memorable wins at the club, I would love to mention individuals but in all honesty it was a huge team effort to get this win well done to all involved. Welcome today to everyone from Langwarrin and welcome to all our sponsors for our 2011 sponsors day hope you all enjoy the day. A big thanks goes to Emma Wakeling and her band of helpers who organised the day and set up the room. Later that night the Amazing Rohan Gazard did his thing again and had the place in stitches, a great night and well done to Moorey for organising that. On the field, the colts had the bye last week, and the 18 s continued their solid form in slippery conditions with a 7 goal win. Big Kruise was impressive in the wet while Gilfo and Alex Reid were also outstanding. The 2 s had a massive 20 goal win after putting in 4 solid qtrs, Boyo was excellent in the middle while Shawry is getting into some good form with 8 majors and Swerving Pike returned for his first game of the year and showed his class. The 1 s got off to a sluggish start and never recovered going down in their most disappointing loss for the year. The best thing about footy is that we can control our effort and attitude and when that is right, we will get the win we need to lift the clubs spirits. Enjoy your time out their boys, play for each other and the results will follow. Socially: Past players day is coming up on July 9th, spread the word. 70 s and 8o s retro night is also less than a month away on 23/7. Get your costumes sorted, great prizes to be won. The Reserves are starting to hit their straps and were 11 goals up at the main break which was enough for Cocky to have a spell in the 2nd half and do some work on his FB profile whilst resting on the pine. That s 2 in row and the boys are starting to see the reward for effort...lets keep it up! The senior game was a dour affair on a coolish day with Pines never letting us run away with it. It was good to see some of the younger guys step up and make their mark and in the end it was a fitting salute to Michael Burke s 200th game. Thanks must as always go to the loyal Red & White Army who always make the effort for home and away games...it s a great thing to see when people aren t sure who s home game it is judging by the size of the crowd! This week we welcome Bonbeach to Showtime Attractions Park for what should be a good contest...both games are must win to set us up for the 2nd half of the season. 21 Southern Umpires Umpiring Hot Seat without the million dollars Head of Operations Umpiring Leader and quiz master Steve Penny put some fun back into umpiring development and coaching during the week with his take on the popular game shoe Millionaire Hot Seat. Umpires were split up into 7 groups and were give just 20 seconds to write down theirs answers about the different rules of football. Test your knowledge on football rules by answering the following questions: What does the umpire do? Question 1, A Ruckman clearly punches the ball over the Boundary line, on the full, after a boundary throw in? A: Out Of Bounds, throw in or B: Out on the full, free kick. Question 2, A Defender takes a mark close to the goal line, he walks behind the goal line to take his kick he is then asked to play on and kicks the ball back into play between the goal and behind posts? A: Play on or B: Goal umpire signals a behind. Question 3, one of the Ruckmen is standing outside the 10m circle at a centre bounce. When is the latest he can enter the circle? A: As the umpire is walking in to throw the ball up. Or B: Whenever he likes. Question 4, when is the centre square Locked and no player is allowed in or out of it? A: When the Boundary umpire sets up in position or B: As the umpire decides to begin his/her approach to ball up. Question 5, what is the field umpires process when a Captain calls for a count. Question 6, A player whilst attempting to bring the ball back into play from behind the Boundary line sprays the kick Out On The Full. The ball never enters the field of play? A: Out On the Full or B: Defender takes another kick or C: Boundary throw in from where the ball was kicked from? Question 7, Name 6 scenarios after a behind is scored and the Defender is about to kick in. Question 8, there is a strong wind blowing directly across the ground. A player running very close to the boundary line kicks the ball. The ball travels out over the boundary line but the wind brings the ball back and it lands in play? A: Out On the Full or B: Play on Sponsors of Southern Umpires Association Since 1908 MPNFL 23

22 Southern Umpires Question 9, a tree overhangs the Boundary line. A player kicks the ball, it hits the tree in play and lands in play? A: Play on or B: Out Of Bounds or C: Ball up near the tree Question 10, A St Kilda player is pushed into the centre square prior to the ball up by a Geelong player? A: Play on or B: Free kick against Geelong Player or C: Free kick against St Kilda Player for being in the square? AFL Asian Championship Umpiring Opportunities Hot on the heels after he major announcement of the TV rights deal for the AFL and the 1 billion dollar price tag we received a communication from the AFL Game Development giving fields umpires the opportunity to officiate in the AFL Asian Championships. Umpires had to meet the following criteria to be involved. Umpires must have a current Level 2 umpire s accreditation. Umpires would need to fund their own travel to Thailand. Umpires would not receive any match payments for the matches. On a positive note at this stage the indications are from the organisers is that they would be able to arrange accommodation if anyone travelled across for the Championships. What is so not surprising about this communication if a NAB pre-season or international rules match was scheduled to be played we all know who would be picking up the bill for these people to be involved. Answers: Q1 = B, Q2 = B, Q3 = A & B the ruckman is not permitted to contest the ball up, Q4 = B, Q5 = Umpire stops play. Lines up both sides in centre square and conduct the count. If more than 19 players are on the ground a Free kick + 50m is awarded from centre or where play stopped whichever is the greatest advantage. If the count is correct the Captain may be reported for time wasting. In any situation it needs to be noted on the match report. SCORES ARE TO REMAIN. Q6 = C, Q7 = Players foot lands outside the line whilst kicking. Player kicks the ball Out on the full. Player kicks the ball and untouched it goes out of bounds. Player is asked to play on and runs out of the square without kicking the ball. Player kicks to himself then plays on. Player asked to play on is tackled. Q8 = A, Q9 = A, Q10 = B 24 MPNFL Since 1908

23 Peninsula Netball KARINGAL Saturday 18th June! What an amazing day for the Karingal Bulls FNC. Four wins from four against Pines. Great work to all the girls & boys! The B girls fought back in the last quarter to come home with a win. Casey was brilliant in defence & Anna kept the fast pace up all game in the midcourt. The A team blitzed it from the first whistle to the final siren. Tight in defence, Brooke, Mel, Sara & Jess didn t let anything get past them. The midcourt of Laura, Jess & Petrina were superb! Beck & Kim again proved unstoppable in goals - what a combo. No best on court as 8 players did themselves proud. Big thanks to Pines for their hospitality & the game. You might not be able to tell from the scoreline but the Pythons girls never gave up! This week we play Bonbeach at home & we re hoping for another two wins at home. Let s back that awesome performance up! Remember Bulls fans, 80s / fluro night Saturday 9th July. See Sara Burke or Kim Stone for tickets. GO BULLS! MT ELIZA The day started off wet and windy, so we were thankful to get our match played without any rain, and even a bit of sun. Even though the courts had been swept they were fairly slippery which slowed the game down a bit as people were a bit reluctant to run too hard in case of falling over. It was difficult for the goalers to shoot with the wind and glare of the sun, when it came out, but Sam, Ella and Caitlen managed great accuracy considering. Our center court girls had a tough time chasing loose balls that were being dropped due to the slippery ball. Bree was down on her knees at one stage, determined to gain possession of a get away ball! Chloe managed to stay steady through the middle giving confidence to those around her. Our experienced defense end in Karen and Di, showed tremendous team work in the ring. The game was played in good spirit and Mt Eliza came away with a healthy win. Reminder to all that the Calendar launch, featuring the young and gorgeous Mt Eliza netball team, will be held at the club on the 16th of July. Come along and see the new talent around the club. Should be a fun and entertaining night. The Natter EDITHVALE-ASPENDALE Congratulations to Caris on making the MPNFL Team that played at the Associations State Championships last weekend at the State Netball & Hockey Centre. Also, well done to Bridge, Britt & Holly who made the MPNFL training squad great effort girls! Today is a big day for our club as it s our first All Eagle Day, when our two A Grade Teams play the first of two games, scheduled for this season. I urge everyone to come down to the Sturdee Street courts to support all our players. Both teams sit at the top of the A Grade ladder so this game will be a spectacle of Eagles netball at its best and is a game that shouldn t be missed. Game time is at 2pm. As a curtain raiser our B Grade team are playing a practice match against the tough Seaford team. Last week was another good week for our girls on the courts as the A2 & B grade team came out winners in solid games against Chelsea and our U15 s played great netball to post their second win for the season against Somerville. Thanks to Ted, Adam & Troy for organizing our first Supa Thursday everyone enjoyed the change in training and the get together at the club afterwards. Finally, don t forget our Ladies Luncheon on Sunday the 10th July. It s $25 a head and based on last year, this will be a HUGE day! See Mandy or Wendy for further details. Good luck to all our teams this week! At least in the A Grade netball - the Eagles will be definite winners. Go Eagles! SEAFORD First of all a big congrats to Shaz on the great news she and Rodney are expecting their first child! We will hopefully have another little netballer or footballer running around soon. We faced a tough Bonny line up today and the B girls started off strong. They really controlled the game, leading by 6 at the first change. The defenders did a great job in the ring, with the Bonny goalers finding it hard to score. Emma and Mel were great in goals again, working really well together! The girls kept extending their lead, ending up winning by 23. Jaime was great up the middle, getting best on along with Donna and Sera. The A grade faced a feirce Bonbeach team and it was a struggle from the start. Going into the second quarter with a lead of 9, Ash and Lou were keen to extend the lead and had their eye in, scoring alot of long bombs and really backing eachother! With our tuff nut Madi doing alot of work around the ring in WD, and defenders Sam and Chelsea keeping their players to low scores the defence end really stood out! The girls ended up coming out victors 57-23, but the game was alot tougher than the score showed! BOC was hard to pick, but Chelsea and Madi s strong defence really helped us Since 1908 MPNFL 25

24 Peninsula Netball get the big win. Thanks to both the Bonny teams and we look forward to meeting you again! Lastly, on behalf of all the netballers our thoughts and prayers go out to the Henderson family through this tough time. GO TIGERS!! PINES Saturday started with a tight hard fought out game against Karingal in the B s were we lead from the start till the last 8 min. The girls have improved from our last clash with Karingal and that was great to see, congrats to the girls for only going down by 8 goals!! Special mention to Simone & Becc M. The A team started off sluggish and looked to have a massive task against them at 22 1 in the first 10 min. It was a credit to the girls to fight back and put themselves back in the game! Working as a team and changing a few players around the girls looked stronger and worked well together. Special mention to Carla. I like to mention that when I thought Coach Dan could do no more she took on the Umpiring on both A & B teams ending with a Fat lip to show for it there, should be a big thanks given!! Good luck this week and I hope you get a win!! Netty P Coletrain LANGWARRIN Our game this week against Mt Eliza was a little disappointing for us battling the conditions, we were doing all the right things but just couldn t convert and make the most of our opportunities! However, it was still a great light-hearted game and we look forward to next week. We would also like to welcome our new coach Donna Gage! We are very excited to have you with us and to help give us a kick in the right direction :-) CHELSEA A wet wintry game for the B team saw us go down to Edi/Asp by 9 goals, not a bad result considering the extremely slippery conditions. A good all round team effort, but our ball passing skills let us down in the wet. Best players were Roxy in the mid court and Hayley R in defence. By 1.15pm the rain clouds had moved on and the A s had some sunshine, but still with a very slippery court. The A s played Edi/Asp 2. At the first break we were 3 goals down, we kept with them for the most part, Edi s lead stretched to 10 goals by half time. Thanks to Hayes Flooring P/L and Fenix Fitness Chelsea Heights for their continued support. BONBEACH An away game today as we travel to Karingal for some outdoor Netball. Hope its not too cold!!.a big chance though to try and get some points if we play to our full potential, so give yourselves every chance girls. Last week Seaford were a bit too strong but we can always hold our heads high. Don t forget everyone should have found a sponsor by now. The Hoodies are also just about ready and its getting colder.
