4 About Football in WA The West Australian Football Commission is the caretaker of football throughout the State, responsible for the overall development of the game. Football in WA dates back to Today it is the most popular sporting code in the State with more than 150,000 active participants each weekend during the season: more than double any other sport. The WAFC is a not for profit sporting association. It is incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act and governed by a volunteer board that oversees the operation of all football activities throughout the state. The WAFC s role includes ownership of the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers Football Clubs, guiding the West Australian Football League, overseeing community football, managing umpiring and football development and acting as the manager of Patersons Stadium. The WAFC works closely with the following key advisory groups: - Education Advisory Group - Primary School Football Advisory Committee - Secondary School Football Advisory Committee - School Girls Advisory Committee This creates positive communities through the active promotion of teamwork, responsibility, respect, leadership, commitment and community participation. 5 F Coles AFL SCHOOL AMBASSADOR PROGRAM - Join the Team Now! The Coles AFL School Ambassador (AFLSA) program resources, recognises, motivates and rewards teachers who strongly promote the game of Australian Football in their school and community. Over 1200 WA primary and secondary teachers have joined this national program since its inception here in Free professional development opportunities are available throughout the year. 6 PROGRAM OVERVIEW There are a variety of football programs and competitions available for students in years 1-7 based on their age and focused on fun, participation and the development of skills. For information please contact your WAFC Football Development Officer. Remember, register early as places are limited! TEACHER ResponsibilitIES The school s supervising teacher must: Be present AT ALL TIMES Take charge of discipline for participating and observing students Introduce guests at the start of each session Model active involvement by participating, umpiring and/or coaching 04

Designed to improve students skills and game sense 2. 10 Fremantle DOCKERS Football Club FREO skills 4 schools In 2013 the Fremantle Dockers are pleased to offer Freo Skills 4 Schools at no cost to participating schools. FREO FASTBALL / FREO KWIK KICK / FREO LONG BOMB Freo Fast Ball, Freo Kwik Kick and Freo Long Bomb are curriculum based football activities. Teachers are provided with educational and promotional resources to assist in their implementation of these competitions. Freo Fast Ball is a team handballing competition Freo Kwik Kick involves students kicking in pairs over a short distance for three minutes Freo Long Bomb involves students kicking a football as far as they can Freo Fundamentals Four sessions in Term 1 Pre-Primary to Year 1 Maximum of four classes from each school participating. Freo Fundamentals, with its emphasis on fun and enjoyment, introduces simple outdoor play activities that promote fundamental motor, communication and social skills. This structured learning program is conducted by students from Notre Dame and the club mascot, Johnny The Doc Docker. The Freo Fundamentals content has been designed to match young students needs and develop competency in fundamental play skills within the WA Curriculum Framework Outcomes. Welcome to Freo Three sessions in terms 1-3 Students in Years 4-7 A maximum of four classes from each selected school The specific objectives are: 1. Develops an understanding of BULLYING, GOAL SETTING, HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, LEADERSHIP and SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. 2. Provides students with a rare opportunity to take part in a clinic and tour run by players from the Fremantle Dockers Football Club. 3. To promote a healthy and active lifestyle. 4. To introduce and engage culturally and linguistically diverse populations to Australian culture through Australian Football, the Fremantle Dockers Football Club and the AFL. 5. To introduce and engage female participants to the Fremantle Dockers Football Club and the AFL. 08

11 F FREO DOCKERS CUP Interschool competition for Year 5/6/7 girls One day Lightning Carnival format or a weekly round robin competition NAB AFL Junior Rules Every participating school receives a resource pack which includes footballs See page 13 FREO DOCKERS SHIELD Interschool one-day Lightning Carnival Upper primary boys and girls Organised by either the schools in their District or conducted by their local WAFL Club See page 12 School Holiday Program Super Clinics conducted by Fremantle Dockers players Tour of Fremantle Football Club facilities Giveaways PURPLE HAZE PARTIES (March) The annual Starlight Purple Haze Game, proudly supported by Fremantle Ports, is the culmination of fundraising activities aimed to help brighten the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children in WA. Schools can host Purple Haze Parties in the lead up to the Starlight Purple Haze Game to fundraise for the Starlight Children s Foundation. There are many different and creative ways to get your school involved. Your Purple Haze Party can be anything from a purple themed assembly or morning tea, to teachers and parents v students footy match! Simply hold your fundraiser in the month of March and your school will go into the draw to win a framed Fremantle Dockers Purple Haze jumper signed by 2013 player ambassadors. Community CampS Australia Post AFL Community Camps are annual events giving regional areas the chance to experience AFL football and focus on participation in football, including coaching clinics and visits to local primary schools. This year the Fremantle Dockers will be visiting the Midlands region. This camp follows successful camps in the Northam, Bunbury, Peel, Geraldton, Pilbara and Great Southern, South West, Goldfields and Esperance regions in previous years. Open Training Sessions The general public are encouraged to watch open training sessions at Fremantle Oval. 12 WEST COAST EAGLES SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS In 2013, we are again lucky to have BHP Billiton Iron Ore as the principal Eagles in the Community partner. Through their generous support, we are able to offer all aspects of our schools programs free to participating schools. Eagles Rock My School (ERMS) Delivers positive health, values, lifestyle and educational messages Two-part program with current and former West Coast Eagles players Eagles Rock My School visits over 200 WA primary schools every year Part I In 2013, ERMS will continue to provide its popular interactive whiteboard (IWB) resource based on Sally Carbon s book I want to be a footballer. A new IWB resource will be mapped to the national curriculum available mid year. The key messages of the program are: The Five Rs of VALUES: 1. Respect yourself (through exercise and eating healthily) 2. Respect others 3. Respect the environment 4. Reach out to your community 5. Reach your potential (by applying yourself to school and other facets of life) The Five Fs of SPORT: 1. Fun 2. Fitness 3. Friends 4. Family 5. Football Presentations can include: cyber bullying nutrition needs of the school. Part II A follow-up visit where a current West Coast Eagle player conducts either a football clinic or reading session. The reading component of the program this year will feature the new interactive whiteboard (IWB) resource. Students receive prizes for participating in both sessions including club magazines, posters, stickers, mini footballs, water sippers and other West Coast merchandise. Each school receives a football signed by the West Coast Eagles playing squad. Eagles Rock My School visits over 200 WA primary schools every year. Eagles Cup (EC) Inter-school competition Students in Years 5-7 The emphasis is on playing for fun and demonstrating sportsmanship Schools combine with other schools of similar size and in close proximity These groups become divisions within each of the metropolitan WAFL districts Winners of each division receive an Eagles Cup trophy presented by a West Coast Eagles player In schools and 12,000 students from all regions in Western Australia participated in Eagles Cup. 10

13 F Eagles Faction Footy (EFF) Intra-school/faction/class competition Years 3-7 EFF is the ideal lead in to Eagles Cup and can be tailored to suit any age group. It has seen dramatic growth since the program s inception in Last year nearly 23,000 primary school students competed in Eagles Faction Footy. Border Patrol The West Coast Eagles and Toyota WA will hit the road for the second year of our regional roadshow, Border Patrol. Last year, Border Patrol, led by West Coast Eagles inaugural captain Ross Glendinning, visited 120 regional and remote schools right across the state, from Albany to Broome. Glendinning, along with some of his past West Coast teammates, as well as staff from Toyota WA and West Coast, will be hitting the road from February to August with the program. Community Camp Each year, the West Coast Eagles venture to all parts of Western Australia (and beyond) to spread the word about our great game and interact with the local community. Coaching clinics, visits to schools and hospitals, training sessions and various other encounters with all sectors of the community are highlights of these camps. In November 2011 the club visited Broome and remote communities of the area. In February 2013 we will visit Northam and its surrounds. Community Camps are unique opportunities to link with a local communities to deliver the football message. Open Training Sessions When training sessions are open to the public, schools are a most welcome addition to our spectator group. Please call the West Coast Eagles reception on to determine which sessions are open. CLUB TOURS In 2012, more than 30 school tours were conducted through the West Coast Eagles facilities, allowing approximately 600 students and staff to have a sneak peek into the club s inner sanctum. Visitors receive a full tour and gain an insight to the daily lives of the football elite. 14 2013 FREO DOCKERS SHIELD One day Lightning Carnival Format. FORMAT To maintain consistency please ensure these standards: 1. Use NAB AFL Junior Rules for children aged 11 and 12 years. 2. The Carnival Shield is awarded to the school with the most points based on the following criteria: Game: Win 3 points Draw 2 Points Lose 1 point Behaviour on and off the field: 1 point deducted for each player sent off the field Coordinators can contact their WAFC Football Development Officer to organise umpires but this may not be possible for all carnivals. RESOURCES A Freo Dockers Shield for each division winner WAFL players (If available) to umpire and assist with presentations Certificates and posters for all participants Two Freo Dockers Shield match balls REGISTRATION Your local WAFC Football Development staff member (contact details are on page 7). 12

One day Lightning Carnival organised by the schools in the District/or one coordinated by their WAFL District. RESOURCES A Freo Dockers Cup for each division winner Freo Dockers Cup Match Ball Freo Dockers Cup certificates and Freo Dockers posters WAFL players (If available) to umpire and assist with the presentations The chance to participate in a curtain raiser to a Fremantle Dockers home game The chance to have players attend their school to conduct a training session for their Freo Dockers Cup team Contact your WAFC Football Development Officer for umpire support. 16 2013 EAGLES CUP FORMAT Inter school competition Year 6/7 students Over a minimum of three weeks The emphasis should always be on playing for enjoyment rather than on winning Secondary schools with Year 7s can have their own All year 7 competition or join a primary school division that has year 7 students participating. 19 F Multicultural Program The Multicultural Program assists new and emerging communities integrate by using Australian Rules Football as a vehicle for social inclusion. The WAFC recognises Australian Rules Football has the capacity to bring communities together by building strong relationships through consultation and developing strategies to encourage participation. Benefits of the program include: Social inclusion through participation Literacy and numeracy outcomes Assisting culturally and linguistically diverse youth become more active Creating links between schools and community clubs Developing important life skills through sport i.e. teamwork, leadership, self-confidence and respect A positive experience with Australian culture The Multicultural Program also provides consultation services to local football clubs to assist with the integration of players from new and emerging communities. These services include cultural awareness workshops and community engagement sessions. 21 F BURLEY SEKEM DESIGN A JUMPER COMPETITION 2013 West Australian Football Development in conjunction with Burley Sekem is proud to announce the continuation of the Burley Sekem Design a Jumper (AFL) competition in primary schools throughout Western Australia. What are the benefits? Ideal vehicle to promote football in the lead up to the (AFL) junior football season Schools and teachers can incorporate the competition into their everyday classes eg Maths, Art, Physical Education Opportunity to win a set of jumpers for your school in the winning design Provides students with an opportunity to display their sense of pride/sense of identity in their school Children who may not play junior football can still be involved in other aspects of the game Improve the quality of team uniforms in some schools Competition details Closing date Friday 29th March 2013 Each school will then send in their two winning designs (only two designs per school) Design to take into account the location of school, local landmarks, school ethos, school population etc. A short written description should accompany the design outlining the reasons behind the colours, design etc The winning design will win a free set of jumpers in that design There will be one country winner and one metro winner Winners will be announced (approximately) in the second week of Term 2, 2013 Jumpers presented at a mutually agreed time REGISTRATION Jennifer Jenaway at the WA Football Commission on , or contact your local District Development Officer.
