5 F About Football in WA The West Australian Football Commission is the caretaker of football throughout the State, responsible for the overall development of the game. Football in WA dates back to Today it is the most popular sporting code in the State with more than 150,000 active participants each weekend during the season: more than double any other sport. The WAFC is a not for profit sporting association. It is incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act and governed by a volunteer board that oversees the operation of all football activities throughout the state. The WAFC s role includes ownership of the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers Football Clubs, guiding the West Australian Football League, overseeing community football, managing umpiring and football development and acting as the manager of Patersons Stadium. The WAFC works closely with the following key advisory groups: - Education Advisory Group - Primary School Football Advisory Committee - Secondary School Football Advisory Committee - School Girls Advisory Committee This creates positive communities through the active promotion of teamwork, responsibility, respect, leadership, commitment and community participation. FOOTY PLUS Football is more than a game. Football helps to educate our young, improve the health of our community, helps prevent suicide, provides a stepping stone to a rewarding career, helps the disabled, prevents bullying, assists migrants to learn about Australia, provides future leaders and promotes good citizenship. Football enriches our community. While many of these benefits have long been the result of our activities, the West Australian Football Commission has both harnessed and harvested activities delivering these benefits and used the knowledge to develop one of the most comprehensive community benefits programs in Australia. We ve called it Footy Plus. 03

22 WEST COAST EAGLES SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS The West Coast Eagles recognises its position in the Western Australian business and sporting community as a leader both on and off the field. We are committed to delivering high quality programs to schools and the wider community. With the support of our principal community sponsor, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, we have been able to maintain a high standard of delivery and in 2013, we are again lucky to have BHP Billiton Iron Ore as the principal Eagles in the Community partner. Through their generous support, we are able to offer all aspects of our SCHOOLS PROGRAMS FREE TO PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS. Open Training Sessions When training sessions are open to the public, schools are a most welcome addition to our spectator group. Please call the West Coast Eagles reception on to determine which sessions are open. Kicking Goals The Kicking Goals program is one of Australia s largest regional based AFL mentoring programs, combining sport-based initiatives to help high school students in the Pilbara towns of Port Hedland and Newman achieve better educational and employment outcomes. Each year BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Swan Districts and the West Coast Eagles combine forces to deliver this quality education program. Kicking Goals is a curriculum-based initiative that utilises a reward and incentive system, where students are required to maintain certain key performance indicators to stay in the program and be eligible for various incentives. One of these incentives is the visits to Hedland and Newman by current West Coast Eagles players. Not only do students get to meet their football heroes during their visits to the Pilbara, students also get the opportunity to communicate with them about all aspects of education and life. Every year, the Kicking Goals students are invited to participate in a curtain-raiser football match before a West Coast fixture. The most sought after prize, however is the Melbourne incentive trip, where wellperformed Kicking Goals students are taken to watch some of the best AFL fixtures live at the MCG and Docklands. Students conclude their time in the program with expertise and certificates in First Aid, coaching, umpiring and many other aspects associated with football. Students are then encouraged to use these skills within their local community. COLES AFL School Ambassador Program In 2012, the West Coast Eagles and BHP Billiton Iron Ore provided one of the major prizes of a trip to the AFL Grand Final for a highly committed AFLSA. The same support will be offered in

I started in juniors in I loved umpiring and the benefits that came with it from the first training night and the first game I umpired. It was a bit different though, at first, having the whistle on the fingers when I had been so used to just playing the game. But the knowledge and coaching I received at junior level gave me an outstanding foundation to allow me to perform as I do in the AFL competition today. DEAN MARGETTS, AFL FIELD UMPIRE. 24
