8 The coelacanth perestroika Nina Riabova, age 10, painted this Latimeria motherand child-picture the night after she listened to Eugene Balon's lecture and saw Mike Vincent's film The Story of the Coelacanth' (Moscow, June 1990). She attended the coelacanth lecture with her father, Igor Riabov, who is himself an accomplished artist and the head of the NPP Ecological Monitoring Team (Chernobyl) of the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Evolutionary Morphology and Ecology of Animals, USSR Academy of Sciences.
