4 Introduction Atlantic salmon have been extirpated from Lake Ontario waters for over 00 years and likely from the Humber River headwaters for over 0 years. With the help of current restoration efforts mitigating barriers and reopening access to headwater tributaries for river spawning species like salmon, reintroduction to watersheds like the Humber River is possible. With efforts already well underway in the Credit River, Duffins Creek and Cobourg Creek, many lessons have been learned when it comes to raising and stocking hatchery raised fish. Unfortunately with hatchery raised fish comes expense with care and feeding. There are limitations in the number of eggs a hatchery can handle, thus restricting stocking scope. In addition, there are instances where observed behavioural changes occur in the fish produced. The practice of incubating Atlantic salmon eyed-eggs directly in headwater creeks, whereby viable fingerlings are produced, could be a tool in future reintroduction efforts, both in the Humber and other watersheds if a successful method can be proven. In 008 and 009, eyed-egg incubation methods were tested within Coffey Creek, Hopeful Creek and the headwaters of the main Upper Humber River. In 00, further experimentation with Direct Deposit into Gravel; and Scotty Boxes with Screens, Above Gravel Incubation; was attempted in the Upper Humber watershed to compare success rates up and downstream of road crossings. A new method, Incubation Tubes, was developed and tested at one location in Coffey Creek. The stocking success of Atlantic salmon swim-up fry was also tested between select sites in the Main Upper Humber and Cold Creek. Site Locations and Selection Coffey Creek, a headwater tributary of the Upper Humber, was chosen as the main location of this egg incubation experiment. The headwaters of the main branch of the Upper Humber, as well as Hopeful Creek and Cold Creek were additionally selected as incubation locations. These creeks display the relatively clean, coldwater habitat necessary for Atlantic salmon spawning. High gradient, fast flowing currents over cobble substrate can be found in several locations in the upper end of these watercourses. Two stocking sites further downstream on the main branch of the Upper Humber were also tested for incubation success. Until the 008 eyed-egg incubation experiment, Atlantic salmon juveniles had been absent from these tributaries for over 0 years. Figure shows the locations of the selected sites and Table summarizes the UTM coordinates for each. Sites were chosen based upon:. A fast flowing current and cobble substrate were present with minimal silt buildup. It was noted that stream reaches immediately downstream of a road crossing often had a significant amount of silt accumulation over the natural cobble and gravel substrate due to runoff from the dirt road.. There existed an established relationship with the site s landowner and there was no reasonable risk of the property ownership changing during the course of the experiment; or the sites were publically accessible in some way. This would guarantee us admittance for follow-up monitoring activities essential to the project.. The site had evidence of groundwater discharge within the reach. This removed the concern for anchor ice formation.

An attempt was made to pair several of the sites based on their proximity to a road crossing; with one site experiencing more turbidity due to its downstream location to a road, and one site experiencing less turbidity due to its upstream location. As a result, the Fimes Property, Stewart Property, Galloway Property, Coffey Creek Farm, and the Markoff Property were chosen as site locations in Coffey Creek. A private property upstream of Hwy 9 and Chicco s Restaurant were chosen as site locations in the Main Upper Humber, as well as two sites, Castlederg and Humber Station, further downstream on the main branch. Two sites were chosen in Hopeful Creek, one on the upstream side of Humber Station Road, and one downstream. An additional site on Cold Creek, upstream of Concession was selected. 6 Figure b: Both Scotty boxes and the Direct Deposit methods were employed within the Stewart Property By-Pass Channel. This location was expected to experience minimal to no turbidity due to its headwater location, upstream of any roads. Both methods were tested at the Fimes Property up and downstream sites. The upstream site was expected to experience the most turbid conditions during the spring runoff period. All Scotty boxes at these three sites were placed perpendicular to the flow. Figure c: Incubation tubes and one Direct Deposit pit were situated at the Galloway property, immediately downstream of the dam. One Scotty box was secured on the Coffey Creek Farm property in the pool downstream of Finnerty Sideroad. Scotty boxes and Direct Deposit methods were also used at the upstream and downstream sites on Coffey Creek Farm. All Scotty boxes were positioned parallel to the flow of the stream. The Finnerty branch is known to experience more turbid conditions during runoff, and this feeds into the main branch of Coffey Creek between the Coffey Creek Farm upstream and downstream sites.

7 Figure d: One Scotty box was secured in a pool at a base of a run in Coffey Creek on the Markoff Property. The Scotty box was positioned perpendicular to the current. The Direct Deposit method was also tested at this site, immediately downstream of the property s footbridge. As this site is further down in the watershed, turbid conditions during runoff events are more likely and severe compared to the upstream Coffey Creek sites. The Scotty boxes were positioned parallel to the flow. It was expected that the downstream site would experience more turbid conditions during runoff events due to its downstream position from the road.

10 Methods Three Atlantic salmon eyed-egg incubation methods were tested in 00. A fourth method was used to incubate and stock Atlantic salmon swim-up fry. The incubation methods employed were: Direct deposit of eyed-eggs into gravel Screened Scotty boxes, above gravel incubation Incubation tubes, in gravel Direct deposit of swim-up fry into current The locations; conditions at the time of stocking; and numbers of eyed-eggs/swim-up fry incubated at each site are summarized in Table below. The eggs that would later be released as swim-up fry were raised in a Heath Incubator setup by a local club for several months. The remaining eyed-eggs used were immediately established at sites and monitored as follows: Direct deposit of eyed-eggs into gravel On the dates indicated in Table above, Ontario Streams staff walked the stretch of creek flowing through the Direct Deposit sites and located open riffles with no ice cover or evidence of anchor ice formation. At each site, when necessary, any thin ice that had formed on the surface at the edges of the stream banks was broken up to make the openings larger. At the Fimes property, Stewart Property, Galloway Property, Coffey Creek Farm and Hopeful Creek sites sediment and rock was raked to the side to create a cleared pit similar to what an adult salmon would create during natural spawning activities. Each pit was approximately 6 deep,.0m wide and.m long. A garbage bin with the bottom cut out was then placed and held firmly in the pit to eliminate any interference from rushing water. Gravel and rock was filled in around the outside edges of the bin. Medium sized rocks (4 to 8 diameter) were added to the area inside the bin to create a rough surface in the pit that would help to catch the eggs. Eyed-eggs were then slowly poured from their containers into the calm water within the garbage bin. The eggs were allowed to settle amongst the substrate and then to 6 cobble was placed by hand into the bin to cover the eggs under a shallow layer. Once the eggs and cobble had settled, the garbage bin was slowly pulled up and removed. The bin was then placed downstream of the deposited area, either within the same pit, or in a new pit, and the process was repeated. The eggs were spread out so that approximately 00 to 00 eggs were deposited in each circle created by the garbage bin. At the Humber Station, Castlederg and Chicco s stocking sites a slightly different method was employed. Pits were created as described above. Then 7.mm cobble purchased from James Dick Aggregates was poured into the pit to create a rough bottom layer approximately - thick. The eggs were added using the garbage bin as described above. At the Chicco s site in-stream cobble was used to cover the eggs. At the Humber Station and Castlederg sites the purchased cobble was added to create a - layer over the eggs. Ontario Streams staff returned to each site approximately once every two weeks until April 0th, 00. During each visit visual observations were made concerning silt accumulation; rock movement; ice and snow cover. During the May site visit, attempts were made to spot any Atlantic salmon fry in the vicinity of the incubation sites. Photographs of each site were taken during each visit to document conditions. Over several days at the beginning of September 00, these sites were electrofished to determine the presence of Atlantic salmon fingerlings. A 00m survey was conducted at each site, with the 0m point 8

12 being situated in the middle of the stocking area unless site constraints (i.e. property lines, roads) prevented this. A backpack electrofisher and -4 netters were used to sample the locations. Upon completion of the electrofishing survey, the fish caught were identified according to species; their total length and weight were measured. The fish were then released back into the stream. In addition, the wetted width of the stream was measured using a measuring tape at 0 locations (approximately 0m apart) within the sampled reach. This information was then used to determine the number of Atlantic salmon fingerlings per m. Scotty boxes with screens, above gravel incubation Screened Scotty box incubators were positioned at 9 locations in Coffey Creek and Hopeful Creek in the same vicinity of the Direct Deposit pits at the Stewart, Fimes and Markoff properties; Coffey Creek Farm; and Hopeful Creek. At each location, sites were chosen based on water depth (i.e. Scotty boxes must be secured below any suspected ice formation), the presence of a stable object on which to attach the boxes (i.e. a submerged branch, root system, or cinderblock), and sufficient flow to keep the incubated eggs aerated (i.e. boxes positioned within a run or at the base of a riffle). The boxes were positioned so that they were submerged. At some locations the boxes were placed with the flat surface of the box facing perpendicular to the current. Rock and cobble was then piled around the boxes to provide protection from the force of the flow, while still allowing aeration of the eggs. The boxes at the remaining sites were placed parallel to the flow of the creek, and minimal rock was placed around the containers to hold them in place, but not block any flow. A wire was fed through the corner holes of each box and then tied to the submerged object. A gap of approximately.inches was created between each box by dropping a few small rocks in between the boxes to maintain this distance. Two hundred Atlantic salmon eggs were contained in each box. The Scotty boxes were monitored by Ontario Streams staff approximately once every two weeks until April 0 th, 00. During each visit visual observations were made concerning silt accumulation; rock movement; ice and snow cover. Photographs of each site were taken during each visit to document conditions. On May th 00, the Scotty boxes were removed from the stream and checked for egg survival. The rocks over top of each site were removed by hand and the Scotty boxes were taken from the stream and placed in a cooler full of creek water. Each Scotty box was pulled out one at a time. A photograph of the outside of the box was taken to document silt accumulation. The bolts holding the boxes closed were unscrewed and the box was opened over top of a water-filled bin. A second photograph was taken of the opened box, again to document silt accumulation. The number of live Atlantic salmon fry; and the dead, but developed fry were counted and tallied. The living fry were placed in a bucket of water while the above process was completed for each Scotty box in the grouping. After all of the boxes were removed and fry were tallied, the living fry were released into the stream by gently pouring out the fry in sheltered areas (i.e. behind woody debris or large rocks) in the reach. In September 00, these sites were electrofished to determine the presence of Atlantic salmon fingerlings. The 00m survey described in the above Direct deposit of eyed-eggs into gravel section overlapped with these sites. A 0m electrofishing survey was conducted at the Coffey Creek Farm Finnerty Rd site because the Scotty box had been placed very close to the road crossing, and we did not have access to the upstream property. Therefore, any fry dispersing downstream of the road culvert were monitored for. 9

13 Incubation tubes In early 00, 8 incubation tubes were constructed. 4 diameter ABS pipe was cut into ft sections. diameter holes were drilled through the sides of each tube (approximately - holes per tube). A cap was glued to the end of each tube and window screening was glued around the sides. A removable cap was placed on the other end of each tube. On February, 00, a cobble riffle free of ice was located immediately downstream of the Galloway Property dam. A trench, perpendicular to the current, was created using rakes and moving rock by hand. An incubation tube was filled with 7.mm cobble purchased from James Dick Aggregates in alternating layers with approximately 0 eyed eggs; approximately 0 eggs per tube. The tube was capped and then placed in the trench, perpendicular to the flow of Coffey Creek. Two tubes were placed in each trench. The trench was filled in and the tubes were covered with on-site -6 cobble. This process was repeated - feet downstream with another trench, and so on, until 8 tubes were installed at this location. The tubes were monitored by Ontario Streams staff approximately once every two weeks until April 0th, 00. During each visit visual observations were made concerning silt accumulation; rock movement; ice and snow cover. Photographs of each site were taken during each visit to document conditions. On May 8, 00 the tubes were removed from the creek. Each tube was gently dug out from the cobble and placed one at a time in a bin full of water. A photograph of the outside and inside of each tube was taken to document silt accumulation. Each tube was carefully uncapped and the contents poured out into the bin of water. Using small aquarium nets, the living and dead fry were sorted from the cobble. The number of fry per tube was tallied before releasing the fry into a sheltered area at the edge of the creek. On August 7th, 00 the site was electrofished to determine the presence of Atlantic salmon fingerlings. A 00m survey was conducted, with the end point being situated at the dam overflow. A backpack electrofisher and netters were used to sample the location. Upon completion of the electrofishing survey, the fish caught were identified according to species; their total length and weight were measured. The fish were then released back into the stream. In addition, the wetted width of the stream was measured using a measuring tape at 0 locations (approximately 0m apart) within the sampled reach. This information was then used to determine the number of Atlantic salmon fingerlings per m. Direct deposit of swim-up fry into current Eyed-eggs obtained from the Harwood Fish Culture Station were raised in a Heath Incubator by a local club. Every two to four days the eggs were inspected and dead or fungus infected eggs were picked out with tweezers and discarded. On April 8th and April rd, 00 the fry were enumerated and transferred into oxygenated bags of water. The bags were placed in coolers and transferred to the stocking sites at the Private Property upstream of Hwy 9 and Cold Creek. At the site the fry were transferred into buckets of water. Ontario Streams staff walked along the creeks in an upstream direction, pouring out fry in sheltered areas in the riffle and run sections downstream of the property s dam. Approximately 4,04 fry were deposited at the Private Property site and 09 fry at the Cold Creek site. 0

14 On September 4th, 00 the Private Property site was electrofished to determine the presence of Atlantic salmon fingerlings. A 00m survey was conducted, with the end point being situated in the dam overflow. A backpack electrofisher and netter were used to sample the location. On August st, 00 a 00m electrofishing survey was conducted at the Cold Creek site. Upon completion of the electrofishing surveys, the fish caught were identified according to species; their total length and weight were measured. The fish were then released back into the stream. In addition, the wetted width of the stream was measured using a measuring tape at 0 locations (approximately 0m apart) at the Private Property sampled reach and 0 locations at the Cold Creek site sampled reach. This information was then used to determine the number of Atlantic salmon fingerlings per m. Results Turbid water conditions were not observed during the winter/spring monitoring period at the Stewart property; Galloway property; Coffey Creek Farm upstream site; and Hopeful Creek, both up and downstream sites (See Appendix A). Turbid conditions were noted on April 6 th at Chicco s; Coffey Creek Farm Finnerty site and Coffey Creek Farm downstream site; and both upstream and downstream sites on the Fimes property. On March 9th and April 6 th highly turbid conditions were noted at the Castlederg and Humber Station sites. Also during the winter/spring monitoring period, sediment buildup was noted around many of the Scotty boxes. Significant deposition around the boxes occurred at both the upstream and downstream sites on the Fimes Property; Stewart Property; and Markoff Property. All of these Scotty boxes were placed perpendicular to the flow of the current. Also, deposition took place at the Hopeful Creek upstream site. These Scotty boxes were placed parallel to the flow. No sediment buildup was noted at the Coffey Creek Farm upstream and downstream sites. These boxes were placed parallel to the current. Minor sediment accumulation was noted at the Hopeful Creek downstream site before the boxes shifted. These boxes had been placed parallel to the flow. Several Scotty boxes shifted out of position during the course of the experiment. Minor shifting occurred with the Scotty boxes at the Coffey Creek Farm upstream and Finnerty Road sites. The Finnerty Road boxes remained parallel to the current and therefore were not repositioned. The upstream site boxes were repositioned on March 9th and remained in place until they were removed in May. The Scotty boxes in Hopeful Creek experienced a larger disturbance. The upstream boxes were repositioned on April 6th to decrease the potential for sediment accumulation. They were next checked on April 0th and had been washed out of position. A portion of one box was out of the water. On March 9th it was noted that the Hopeful Creek downstream Scotty boxes had shifted and they were repositioned parallel to the flow. On April 0th it was noted that the boxes had shifted once again, however in this instance they remained parallel to the stream s flow and so they were left as is. The Scotty boxes were removed on May th, 00. Almost all of the screens had come loose, to some extent, at each site with the exception of the Markoff property. The survival data for each site is summarized in Table. The Fimes upstream site Scotty boxes contained the most living fry (0.8%), followed by Hopeful Creek downstream site (6.%); Coffey Creek Farm upstream site (6.%); and Markoff Property (6.0%).

15 The Galloway Incubation Tubes were opened on May 8th, 00. As summarized in Table 4, a total of (4.%) living fry were released from these tubes. An additional 404 developed but dead fry were also tallied. Overall, 6 eggs developed into fry at this site, or approximately 69.4%. Phase III of the Atlantic salmon eyed-egg in-stream incubation experiment produced viable Atlantic salmon fingerlings within 4 of the reaches sampled with the backpack electrofisher in August/September 00. Coffey Creek Farm downstream site; Fimes property upstream site; Hopeful Creek downstream site; and Private Property upstream of Hwy 9 all produced evidence of fingerling survival. Table summarizes the results. The Private Property site where swim-up fry were stocked produced the highest density of 0.04fingerlings/m. One yearling was caught during the 00 August/September electrofishing surveys. This individual was captured on the Galloway property on August 7, 00, weighing g and measuring 47mm in length. In addition, as there are no barriers blocking the upstream and downstream ends of each reach, it cannot be assumed that the Atlantic salmon caught during the August/September electrofishing represent the total Atlantic salmon that survived at each site. Some individuals may have migrated up or downstream out of the 00m sampled reach. Others may have successfully developed to the fry or fingerling stage, but were then eaten by predators. Therefore, the following comments are approximations based on the available data and observations. While visual observations indicated that the placement of Scotty boxes parallel to the current, instead of perpendicular, resulted in less sediment accumulation around the boxes, this did not correlate into an increase in survival to the fry stage. Of the Scotty boxes placed parallel to the current,.7% of eyedeggs were released as living fry in May, compared to 4.6% with the perpendicularly placed boxes. This slight difference between methods does not clearly indicate an advantage to either. Similarly, it was believed that Scotty boxes placed in streams experiencing less turbidity during the spring runoff period would have a better rate of survival. This theory was not supported by the 00 data. Scotty box survival was greatest at the Fimes upstream site (0.8%) which was considered to be a slightly more turbid site. Clear water sites at the Hopeful Creek downstream site (6.%) and Coffey Creek Farm upstream site (6.%) showed second and third place survival. While the Markoff property, which experiences high levels of turbidity and whose Scotty boxes became completely buried in deposited sand, showed the fourth highest rate of survival (6.0%) of all the Scotty boxes. These inconclusive patterns are supported by the August/September electrofishing results. The Hopeful Creek downstream site (low turbidity, parallel Scotty boxes) produced fingerlings, or 0.% of stocked eggs. The Coffey Creek Farm downstream site (turbid, parallel Scotty boxes) and the Fimes upstream sites (turbid, perpendicular Scotty boxes) each produced fingerling, or 0.08% of stocked eggs. There is no evidence to suggest that the incorporation of purchased 7.mm cobble into the direct deposit sites at Chicco s, Castlederg and Humber Station resulted in an increase in egg survival. No fingerlings were found at any of these sites during the August/September electrofishing. 4

18 The Incubation Tubes installed at the Galloway property showed promise. A 4.% survival of eyed-eggs to the fry stage significantly surpasses any of the Scotty box survival results over the past three years; or results of the Vibert boxes tested in 008. If the additional 404 dead but developed fry had in fact survived until the May 8th release date, this success rate would have increased to 69.4%! It is suspected that miscommunication with the landowner may have resulted in the death of some of these fully developed fry. Immediately upstream of the incubation site is the Galloway property online pond. Each fall the landowner removes some of the stop logs in the dam, and he replaces them after the spring melt to avoid flooding on his property. When the stop logs were replaced in the spring, a couple weeks before the tubes were removed, there would have been periods of significantly reduced flow directly downstream of the dam. These conditions may have negatively affected the fry. While depth measurements were not taken, many of the Incubation Tubes that produced better results seemed to be placed in slightly deeper trenches. They may have remained more saturated with water during these times of low flow. Overall, it is believed that the Incubation Tubes should be tested further in 0 at multiple sites. The stocking of swim-up fry also showed potential as a future technique in the Upper Humber watershed. This method produced 0.04fingerlings/m which was the highest density observed at all of the 00 sites. It should also be noted that 4,04 fry were stocked here, an amount much greater than at any of the Scotty box/direct Deposit sites. Therefore, the high density of fry directly resulted in the high density of fingerlings. Percentage-wise, 0.087% of the swim-up fry were caught as fingerlings. This is comparable to the Coffey Creek Farm downstream site and Fimes property upstream site (0.08%), and less than the Hopeful Creek downstream site (0.%). However, the time it took to stock the 4,04 fry was significantly less than what it would take to stock the same amount of eyed-eggs in Scotty boxes or through the Direct Deposit method. This time factor makes the swim-up fry technique very attractive when dealing with a large-scale stocking program. In contrast, the swim-up fry stocked at the Cold Creek site did not produce any Atlantic salmon fingerlings in the August electrofishing survey. This does not conclusively indicate that no Atlantic salmon survived to this stage at this site, but it is in stark contrast to the other swim-up fry stocking site. Less ideal habitat conditions, as well as predation by rainbow trout and brown trout, were likely factors here. Other locations within Cold Creek should be surveyed and pursued as 0 stocking locations. The swim-up fry would require less resources and time to raise when compared to hatchery raised fry or fingerlings. Smaller incubation trays could be set up and run by volunteer groups. In-class hatcheries have been implemented at many schools in the Credit River watershed. In the Upper Humber area, several elementary and high schools could be approached for the same purpose. The Islington Sportsmen s Club also runs a small hatchery and they should be approached to participate in this program as well. Conclusion Results of Phase III of the Atlantic salmon incubation experiment indicated that the Direct Deposit into Gravel method or the implementation of screened Scotty boxes still cannot be relied heavily on as methods for Atlantic salmon reintroduction. Experimentation with parallel versus perpendicular placement of Scotty boxes; and turbid versus less turbid stocking sites did not result in any noticeable trends that would influence the implementation of these techniques. While there has been some

19 success with Scotty boxes at certain sites, their implementation on a large scale would be extremely time consuming. The Incubation Tubes showed a great deal of potential as an eyed-egg stocking technique and it is recommended that further experimentation with this method be continued in 0 at multiple sites. It is also recommended that the majority of the 0 eggs be raised to the swim-up fry stage, with the help of volunteers, and stocked into appropriate creeks in April 0. The time and resources invested in raising the eggs to this stage will be compensated for in the time saved during the winter/spring biweekly monitoring and stocking, and the improvement in survival and density results. 6

28 Appendix D: Field Photographs Direct Deposit into Gravel Method Shovels, rakes and boots were used to create a clean oblong pit in a cobble riffle. A bottomless garbage bin was used to create an area of still water in which the eggs or sac fry could be deposited. The garbage bin was screwed into the substrate and held firmly in place.

29 Medium sized rock was then added to the pit to create a coarse surface that would catch the deposited eggs or sac fry. Approximately 00 eggs or sac fry Atlantic salmon eyed-eggs. Rock and gravel was then gently added to the bin to cover the eggs. 6

30 The bin was then removed and the process was repeated downstream. The pits were approximately m wide by.m long 7.mm cobble purchased from James Dick was used at the Chicco s, Castlederg and Humber Station Direct Deposit sites. 7

31 Screened Scotty Boxes, Above Gravel Method A tray of Atlantic salmon eyed-eggs. 00 eggs are gently brushed into a sorting tray. One side of a screened Scotty box is placed on top and then inverted, thus dumping the eggs into the individual compartments in the Scotty box. 8

32 The second half of the Scotty box is placed and the two sides are bolted together. A finished screened Scotty box containing 00 Atlantic salmon eggs. Scotty boxes are secured underwater to an object such as a submerged branch, root or cinderblock. 9

33 Scotty boxes were placed either parallel, as seen here, or perpendicular to the current. In-stream rock was then used to provide stability to the boxes. Scotty boxes were removed from the stream in May and opened. This sediment accumulation on the outside of a 00 Scotty box was typical for all sites. 34 The Scotty boxes had been screened to prevent the hatched fry from escaping, and therefore allow the success of the boxes at each site to be directly compared. Unfortunately the screens came loose from many of the boxes during the incubation season. Several living Atlantic salmon fry were released from the Scotty boxes in May. Incubation Tube Method The incubation tubes were made out of PVC tubing, cut into ft lengths. A cap was glued to the bottom of each tube and holes were drilled in the sides. Window screening was glued around the tube. A removable plastic cap was placed on the top of each tube.

35 The tubes were filled with 7.mm purchased cobble. with eggs layered in amongst the rock. The eggs were gently counted into the tubes using a wet feather. Approximately 0 eggs were incubated in each tube.

36 Rock at the Galloway stocking site was approximately 6 in diameter. A trench, perpendicular to the flow of the creek was dug by hand. Incubation tubes were placed in the trench, below the level of the substrate. The trenches were filled back in with rock. Flagging tape tied to the tubes, along with blue caps, were used to help identify the tube locations and facilitate in finding them in May.

37 The tubes were removed in May. They had some sediment accumulation on the outside of the screens. The tubes were opened one at a time over a water filled bin. Minimal sediment accumulation was noted inside the tubes. The rock and fry were emptied into the water filled bin and then sorted. 4

38 living Atlantic salmon fry were released from the 8 incubation tubes. 404 dead, but fully developed, fry were also found in the incubation tubes.
