If the dredge holes do not hold fish try fishing the mouths of the numerous canals associated with the lake. Try fishing chicken liver rigged on a 6 or 8 hook around the "Baited Fishing Area" signs. Night crawlers and wigglers are a good second choice for bait. However, increases in the last decade of cormorant fish-eating bird activity has required our project to try various stocking techniques to overcome this challenge. Barnett is scheduled to be stocked with 4, channel catfish from our Richloam fish hatchery by the first week in April. These should be approximately half a pound each and large enough to avoid the cormorants. The City of Winter Park purchased 2, large channel catfish one pound each from Georgia Select Hatchery that were stocked in Lake Island Park in September and these also should result in good catfishing. Because it is difficult and expensive to stock the larger channel catfish, Bear Creek and Santiago were stocked with smaller catfish at very high rates three times the usual number in the hopes that the large numbers would overwhelm the bird predation. Although channel catfish are the management focus of these small ponds, some decent largemouth bass fishing can be had in Bear Creek using wacky-rigged finesse plastics and topwater plugs thrown first thing in the morning. Flooded timber, points, deep holes along with hydrilla and eel grasses make this lake a favorite among many bass anglers. Also, be sure to observe posted speed limits on the lakes and all boater safety regulations. Little Lake Down is entered via a somewhat hidden canal on the west side of Lake Down. The canal is to the north of the main canal between Lake Down and Wauseon Bay. Little Lake Down offers some great cover ranging from reed, grass beds and hydrilla, which has also been known to hold some good sized Bass. Wauseon Bay is a smaller body of water which essentially acts as a conduit from the west side of Lake Down to Lake Butler. Wauseon Bay offers a wide range bass fishing options, with some great lily pad fields, grass bed and some great docks for flipping. The east side from Bumby Point to the canal is restricted to a no-wake zone on the north side of the buoys due to the proximity of docks. From the south exit of Wauseon Bay, the boater moves onto Lake Butler. Lake Butler is the largest lake of the Butler chain of lakes and it offers 1, acres of some great bass fishing, high-quality water. Bird Island has produced some great limits of bass flipping and with spinner baits. Crank baits are a great option on this lake, mostly of a Long A type bait in either a wild shiner pattern or with a blue tint to them. Plenty of grass beds, hydrilla and deep water beds of eel grass can and will make for some great bass fishing action. Lake Louise is a long, narrow lake. This is one lake that holds some great eel grass beds as well as some good flooded timber. Lake Isleworth is a somewhat circular shaped pool of about 10 acres on the canal south of Lake Louise. This lake has some excellent lily pad areas as well as areas with some great flooded cypress trees. Frog type baits and Senko type baits produce very well in this type of cover as well as the mouth of the canals which take you to the other lakes. Lake Chase is acres of some of the finest mixture of vegetation the chain has to offer and is relatively close to the only public access ramp on Lake Isleworth. Lake Chase has been a great lake for flipping and pitching in and around the grass beds, boat docks and flooded timber on the golf course end of the lake. Lily Pads along the shoreline by the power lines can at times hold some good bass being caught on a wide variety of lures from snakes to frogs. Lake Blanche provides acres of shallow to deep water bass fishing. This lake has a very deep hole just as you enter the lake from the canal which has produced some great bass using jigging spoons as well as dropshot and Carolina rigged baits. The only way out is through the canal back to Lake Chase. Lake Tibet is the second largest lake on the change with 1, acres. It is longer than wide and has bays on both the east and west side. The south western side of this lake fronts a nature preserve. With several docks and deeper dropoffs this lake can produce some great bass fishing action and for the crappie fishermen, this lake has produced some great numbers and size. Grass beds and lake points are some areas to key into on this lake as well as the flooded cypress trees. Lake Sheen is acres of circular shaped lake which offers good Bass fishing with several docks. Grass beds again are a key to this lake as with several lakes on this chain. Scattered areas of hydrilla and areas where the cypress trees are flooded have been some of the best producing areas. The canal on the south side of the lake leads to Pocket Lake. Pocket Lake is roughly circular in shape and covers acres. For the guys coming down here from up north, one of the best northern lures we have had some great success using in this lake has been a Mepps Minnow on the developed side of the lake. The undeveloped side of the lake has some very nice reed stands and lily pad areas as well as scattered grass beds. Fish Lake or Little Fish Lake is about 30 acres and is often fairly weedy. Although a much smaller, this lake has some excellent cover to it. Few boat docks but a lot of great lily pads. When this lake is on it is on fire. Five fish limits can run 20 pounds plus on this little gem of a lake with very Page 3

4 little boat traffic. The only exit is through the canal to Pocket Lake of the Butler Chain of lakes. Page 4

The earths bottom called limestone, which underlies most of Florida, was slowly dissolved by water to form sinkholes. A series of sinkholes that formed over time produced the sparkling, pristine Butler Chain of Lakes. Many areas within the lakes can be as deep as 30 to 40 feet. Consisting of clear water, deep ledges, visible and submerge vegetation, the Butler chain offers a wide variety of lure options as well as year round fishing. Schooling bass are found almost year round allowing for exciting top water action at times. Finesse techniques are also excellent choices, that are used for water that can be clear enough to see 10 ft deep on a sunny day. Techniques used for finesse fishing can be drop shot, wacky rigging for artificial fishing and shiners or shad for livebait among others. Best times to fish the Butler chain are from October through May. This time of the year offers quality size bass in the lb range and good numbers of fish caught each day. Boat traffic can be difficult on weekends, but the cooler winter temperatures keep recreational boaters to a minimum. Although, live bait can be used on this chain, it is a very popular Orlando fishing locations for artificial because of the wide variety of techniques available to catch pre-spawn, spawning and post spawn bass. This chain is excellent for anglers from the North and from Japan who are accustomed to deep clear water while using spinning tackle with light line. This approximately acre reservoir in the Stick Marsh and in the Farm 13 portion, west of Fellsmere and Palm Bay, Florida, at times has been one of the leading bass lake in the Central Florida area. Early in its life, it was heavily stocked with fish, both bass and crappie. This is one of our favorite Orlando fishing locations in the Central Florida area and has produces some of our biggest catches to date. The exposed limestone collects freshwater, and below this freshwater lens, the rock holds saltwater. Over the years, the rains and freshwater began to form tunnels and cavities, collecting in what would become a giant reservoir. In some areas, where the crust is thin, the water bubbles to the surface. The result is more than freshwater springs. Some are small â barely noticeable, really â while others are large enough to pump out millions of gallons of water a day, enough to feed a major river. Early humans gathered by the springs where they fed on mastodon, mammoth, ground sloth, giant armadillo and beaver. Today, divers sometimes find bones and teeth, as well as stone-age tools, from this forgotten age. The tourists loved to watch the fish, turtles and otters swim through the cool, clear water. Almost two decades later, a forward-thinker named Hullman Jones got the visitors one step closer by installing a glass viewing box on the flat bottom of a dugout canoe. Today, Silver Springs still retains much of its original charm. Visitors still line up to take the legendary glass-bottom boat tours, and kayakers and canoeists love to launch at the nearby Silver River State Park to paddle up to the head springs. State Parks While some springs are privately owned, Florida has 15 state parks that preserve and protect the public access to the aquifer. Fanning Springs is also a favorite swimming hole for locals enchanted by the allure of the deep blue water. Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park, located about 16 miles from Live Oak, the cave diving capital of the world, has two main springs, a spring run, and six sinkholes, all maintained in their natural condition. With more than 28, feet of underwater passes, one of the longest cave systems in the continental United States, this state park is a gathering place for underwater explorers. With swimming platforms and a dive tower, the park is a popular swimming spot. Visitors can also board at the park for a boat tour of the Wakulla River.
