1 Newsletter 2012 All the All the Reports August/September I hope this describes the A.M.F.C. as well as it does the 2012 Olympics From an article by Terence Blacker in I 7 th August Gracious in Defeat: Now that s the legacy One great achievement of the Olympics has gone largely unnoticed. The British have learned how to lose with grace and generosity. Saying the right things after victory is relatively easy. It has been the way those who have lost narrowly (Athlete Christine Ohuruogu... Gymnast Louise Smith... Swimmer Rebecca Adlington... Sailors Simpson and Percy) which will leave a legacy beyond sport. All these competitors admitted their painful disappointment, but each made the point that competing had been an honour, that the crowd had made it all worthwhile, and they were lucky to be there. To get a sense of how unusual it is to find grace amongst sporting losers, one only has to turn to top-level football. Think of the player s storming off the pitch after a defeat, the bilious post-match moaning of managers, the rage and nastiness of some losing fans. It is too easy to blame this ugliness on the money and greed of footballers. In fact it reflects a wider influence. The unrealistic expectations, the pathetic excuses, the blaming and bullying are symptoms of a society which has forgotten that sport is a game, that losing is not the end of the world. The same process has taken place in London this summer, but in a positive direction. The gratitude and decency expressed by British competitors who failed to win at their home games owed nothing to sport psychologists or coaches, but has mirrored the attitudes of the crowd. Spectators have done what was least expected, they have looked on the bright side, smiling when their competitors have lost as well as when they have won. It was uplifting said Christine Ohuruogu, taking in the applause of the crowd. I thought Why should I be miserable when so many people have enjoyed what I have done for them. No doubt we will be hearing much more from the triumphant British competitors of London 2012, but it is the silver and bronze spirit of Ohuruogu, Addlington, Smith and others that deserve to be celebrated, and to live on. Three ways to get to your destination 1. A.A. Road Atlas 2. Electronic Sat. Nav 3. Apparently the third way I have a little Sat-Nav It sits there in my car A Sat-Nav is a driver's friend It tells you where you are I have a little Sat-Nav I've had it all my life It s better than the normal ones My Sat-Nav is my wife It gives me full instructions Especially how to drive "It's thirty miles an hour", it says "You're doing thirty five" It tells me when to stop and start And when to use the brake And tells me that it's never ever Safe to overtake It tells me when a light is red And when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene It lists the vehicles just in front And all those to the rear And taking this into account It specifies my gear. I'm sure no other driver Has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice It fills me up with counselling Each journey's pretty fraught So why don't I exchange it And get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I'm properly fed, It washes all my shirts and things And - keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages And my tendency to scoff, I do wish that once in a while I could turn the damned thing off!!!

2 Autumn Association Match ***** Is this the closest EVER? Only O E place is confirmed! Grey Lags are the winners of Group Four **** Group One GWAFFA A are nearly there BUT OT QUITE avy could still beat Bewl A into last place Group Two Soldiers A will win if they turn up and get one point! Any one of Bristol Queen Mother Hanningfield could come last Group Three Invcta A will win if the turn up and get one point Any one of the other three could come last but it is not looking good for Fish Hawks B Group Four Grey Lags have won! It is possible for Foremark to get more points than Soldiers B but probably an outside bet!

September. It was hot, with bright sun and Rutland with Sorry could not decipher name and not one I recognise green algae in both arms and the main bowl. It is not surprising that anglers struggled, with no limits, three blanks and an average of only 2.4. Every boat fished in the very end of the South Arm, concentrating on Burley Reaches and Lax hill. The only common denominator of the day was where everyone fished. Anglers reported catching fish on every line Best Fish Graham Pearson from floater to DI 5. Some fish were caught pulling, some slow pulling, some by figureof-eighting, one angler reported one fish static. There was also a cosmopolitan range of flies. Averages were surprisingly close. Draycote 2.5 Rutland 2.4 and for this match on Bewl 2.7. It is usually August which gives the most difficult fishing, but this year it seems that September is going to be the month to forget. Peter Thomason Reports The conditions were difficult with bright sunlight, very warm temperature and very little cloud or breeze. Many areas of the reservoir remained and a Booby twiddled and tweaked. Fish were also caught on nymphs and floating lines. Considering the conditions, a rod average of 2.7 was not bad and the fish remained reasonably high in the water. Best areas were Hook Strait, around the Cages, and the main Bowl. By the end of the day, all were glad to be off the water and out of the heat. For those that stayed (only TWFFS and Queen Mother Teams) an enjoyable cool pint and a meal was welcome at The Lookout restaurant at Bewl. Tunbridge Wells F.F.S. Everybody reported that practice on the preceding day had been very difficult. Expectations were low, and for most this was confirmed during the match. Keiran Bonus (below) caught the only limit but even for him it was by using a variety of flies etc. at just the right time. He caught two on dries (Black Hoppers pulled across the nose of rising fish) he caught on blobs boobies and nymphs. They are now four points clear and provided that turn up for the Autumn Match on Grafham, and get one point cannot be beaten. However after five rounds any one of the other three teams in Sthe group could be relegated! Kieran s limit came drifting into the bank in Rainbow Corner. The next best bag of six fish was caught by drifting out of the North West corner of the Dam. What was frustrating for many was the large area of rising fish in the middle of the western end of the reservoir. They seemed to be taking minute buzzers, and going very small was useless. Keiran pulled a big fly across them for his two in dries, so this was probably the only way to catch them. Draycote has provided very good fishing for three of the John Mees Equal Best Fish With his limit and a six and a five Invicta F.C. A (Above) weighted in over 26lbs more that their closest rivals. The facilities were good and the water excellent. We were made to feel welcome even by the sailing fraternity! The fishing was peculiar, to say the least! The morning was cloudy and the afternoon sunny. The wind was very light and variable until late in the day, when it became a little stronger. Most boats cut their engines within one minute of leaving the jetty some to the right some to the left. Those who turned left were surrounded by variety of flies using a variety of methods. Peter Lewis was one of only four angers to catch a limit. He caught using a Fast Glass line. His team was a combination of F.A.B. (Foam Arsed Blobs), Daiwl Bach s and others. A few fish were caught on Cormorants and other lure types. Unusually, Luck seemed to be a factor. The same flies fished in the same way on similar Soldier Palmers B John Gamon 4 6lbs 7oz Tug Lawson 2 3lbs 8oz Toby Buney 3 7lbs 6oz David Joyce 2 3lbs 5oz Steve Cranston 2 4lbs 2oz Jim Wright 5 7lbs 14oz 32lbs 10oz Best Bag 21lbs 13oz Peter Lewis (Grey Lags) Best Fish 5lbs 0oz Kevin Bennett (Grey Lags) fish swirling about on the surface. The fish were in a very small area. Fewer rising fish but more were willing to take a lines resulted in dissimilar success. With three of the limits caught by Grey Lags they were easy Match Winners.
