4 CAPTAIN S REPORT OCTOBER, OCTOBER, 2008 Excellent quality fish was weighed-in at the October weigh-in even though the attendance was small in numbers. The weather was good to us but the fish are still scarce. This might have to do with the eight or more fishing trawlers dragging Pittwater and the Hawkesbury waters every morning with not many fish lift for us. With the start of the Snapper Season in Victoria it is a shame Cyril is not closer as he would have taken a prize with the two large ones he caught (weighing 3.3kgs and 3.1kgs). Mary s got away. The kiddies looking on were aghast at the size of the Snapper and Cyril let them touch its eye to feel how soft it is. Unfortunately, the Junior Fishing Fun Day has been postponed until February or March 2009 as there is a lot happening at this time of the year with end of school camps and other outings. We will not be having a December weigh-in due to it falling a few days before Christmas. Those of you who could not come along to the Club s Picnic at the Basin missed a great fun day. Bob, Doreen, De, David, Doug and myself watched the races and helped with the tug of war by yelling at the team at our end to pull, while relaxing under a large tree, eating and drinking and enjoying the day. Don t forget Leatherjacket is the Fish of the Month for November. Looking forward to seeing you at the weigh-in. Eleanor

7 FISH OF THE MONTH November 2008 LEATHERJACKET FAMILY NAME MONACANTHIDAC Species Description Habitat Fan-belled Leatherjacket, Chinaman Leatherjacket, Velvet Leatherjacket, Mosaic Leatherjacket. These are some of the more common Australian species. The different species are too numerous to list. Some species are inedible. Leatherjacket is easily recognised by the prominent dorsal spine above the eyes, which in some species, including P.vittiger, folds completely into a groove when not in use. It s other distinguishing feature is the leathery skin rather than scales. It is a peaceful breed of fish that mooches around reef and weed beds grazing daintily with it s small but chisel-toothed mouth. Behaviour Feeds on small crustaceans, algae and seagrass. Small schools. The Toothbrush Leatherjacket is commonly found around southern Australia, from Coffs Harbour NSW, to Western Australia s Jurien. Fishing Method The shearing teeth make long shank hooks necessary. Baits should be small and soft, such as peeled prawn, fish flesh, skinned octopus or squidmeat. An unweighted or lightly weighted bait allowed to sink slowly is the best method. 21 THE NAUTICAL ORIGINS OF EVERDAY EXPRESION COAST IS CLEAR The phrase first appears in print in 1531 where it describes a vessel which had safely cleared the coast, then Shakespeare used it in Henry VI as a reference to visibility. Neither of these references touch on its true insinuation; it is a reference to smuggling surely? Or some nefarious operation. WINDBAG Originally the nickname for a sailing ship, it has somehow come to mean a talkative or boastful person.

22 RECIPE LEATHERJACKET WITH MUSHROOM AND BACON A good low-kilojoule dish for people watching their weight. All baked in the oven, the flavours intermingle very well. Preparation Time: 25 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Serves Ingredients: 4 medium sized leather jackets 4 rashes bacon 125 gms mushrooms finely chopped 1 tablespoon parsley, finely chopped 2 teaspoons lemon ring, finely grated. 1 cup fish stock 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1/2 teaspoon sugar Leatherjacket. Excellent eating, with white, soft flesh and mild flavour. Always skin and then cook fish whole. Cannot be filleted because of the large nodes on the skeleton. Flesh is easily separated from bones when cooked. All methods of cooking are METHOD: 1. Skin leatherjacket and trim fins 2. Lay 4 bacon rashers in a large ovenproof dish. Place fish on top of bacon and then sprinkle combined mushrooms, parsley and lemon rind over fish. 3. Add stock to pan. Back at 180 degrees C for minutes, or until flesh flakes. 4. Towards the end of cooking time add tomato past and sugar. 5. Mix into pan juices 6. Serve fish with pan juices. Serve Immediately Enjoy your meal Eleanor
