Following on from the success of the Flathead Competition in February despite the weather The Annual Bream Competition will kick off in April. The level of interest will be high as this is one of the two social competitions where a year s worth of bragging rights are on offer. Old school Bream masters Hank van Laar, Steve Bax and Andrew Wirey Morgan will be out to claim the rights. However, the young guns are firing and we may well see a huge upset coming as per the Flattie Comp, Sub Juniors cleaned the floor with the more established and experienced members. There will be an info night ahead of the competition Great time to learn a few tips and tricks from the more experienced fisho s and maybe learn a secret spot or two to try out. There is no entry fee for the Bream Competition and the Club will be putting on a BBQ feed for members and families after the weigh-in and presentations. Inc "Roy Barnham" Estuary Teams March By Peter Ryan - Sydney North Division Sydney North Division entered a team comprising of 9 Warringah Anglers Club members and 1 North Shore Dangler. The division, after fishing this competition last year for the first time in many years, managed a 4th placing out of 7 divisions. This was an improvement from the previous year, in terms of the scores with plenty of quality fish caught. The division was slightly held back by only fielding 10 members whereas most other divisions had a full complement of 12 anglers. The weather was atrocious with the event starting Saturday afternoon 2nd March in blustery wet conditions that did not improve until the Sunday morning weigh in and most anglers fishing throughout the night without sleep.fortunately most boats had canopies, but every squall reminded us that Evan and Steve in their tinny were probably doing it a lot tougher - but must have kept them more alert! Evan Smiles was our top angler catching 12.7kg of fish numbering 27, Andrew Morgan was our number 2 angler with 10.8kg. The top boat from our team was Evan and Steve Nowlan with 38 fish followed by Peter Ryan and Greg Smyth with 32 fish slightly edging out Chris Bailey and Andrew Morgan for number 3 boat. Our other 2 boats,mostly comprised of first time competitors in this event indicated that next year they would enjoy the challenge with this year s experience. All in all a great result with all team members promising a better result for next year. The catch comprised some fantastic bream fishing with a good showing of quality whiting, some nice flathead, a couple of reddies, tailor, mullet, flounder and even a couple of amberjack. Evan and Steve also secured some nice squid during the comp for a great feed.john Lagakis and Alex Whitlock caught nice bream and flatties and with John's local knowledge should be all the better for the run next year. Martin Burchell and Mark Turnbull although not catching a lot, found good pizza and longtom. Many thanks to John Lagakis for providing his accommodation. John,Greg, Martin and Peter arriving on the Friday afternoon hoping to catch poddy mullet and nippers but being somewhat restricted with the weather enjoyed a great barbeque and a few beers prior to the comp. Hope to see a full compliment of competitors from our division next year. FISH CAKE WITH AVALON STYLE! Fish Cakes by Terry Crawford Club regular Terry Crawford is a wiz in the kitchen and has shared one of his favorites with us..enjoy!! 1kg fish fillets (Tailor, Bonito, Salmon any "non-table" fish etc) 4 tablespoons Thai red curry paste 100g green beans sliced to 3mm pieces 1 tablespoon dried or fresh lime leaves thinly sliced (if using dried soak for 10 min) 2 tablespoons finely chopped Coriander leaves and root 1 egg, lightly beaten 2 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt Vegetable oil for frying Steam fish (use wok & bamboo steamer), put in food processor with curry paste blend to a light finely textured consistency. Combine in bowl with all the ingredients (except oil) and knead with hands. Roll into 4cm balls and flatten in palm of hand. Deep fry in oil until golden (turning). Serve with sweet & sour cucumber relish (recipe follows) 1/2 cup vinegar 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoon water 1 small onion finely diced 1 small carrot finely diced 1 medium cucumber finely chopped Boil vinegar, sugar, salt and water in a saucepan for 1 minute. Mix onion, carrot and cucumber in a bowl. Pour syrup over unitl vegetables are just covered. Taste to see if extra vinegar, sugar or salt in needed. If you want spice add a chopped chilli. Page #2

4 BAYVIEW BOATRAMP FISH CLEANING TABLE ALL GO!! From Wayne Tonkin About 18 months ago at a committee meeting of Warringah Anglers, mention was made about a cleaning table at Rowland Reserve, Bayview. Time progressed and just before Christmas, Wayne Tonkin was pleased to announce that there was a go ahead for a cleaning table at the boat ramp. A few details: Presentation Day. 1. NSW Fisheries have approved the grant request and are providing $8,200 for the project. Council will cover the remaining costs which are still unknown as their outdoor staff will do the installation. 2. All going well with approvals, Pittwater Council have proposed to install in first half of Table is proposed to be marine grade stainless steel table, with a tap built in the middle. All thanks must go to a couple of hard workers from the committee. Main thanks go to Hank van Laar who did the early stage liaising with the council for this well needed community asset. Also special thanks go to Steve Bax and Wayne Tonkin for a great contribution in the continued commitment to achieve the progress it has achieved so far. Latest Update In discussions with Pete Rodham from Pittwater Council, he has confirmed that the table is going ahead but will be on the southern side of the southern ramp in the grassed area right next to the breakwall. This area doesn't create a problem with regards to tide and people walking on the beach etc. It is a good location as offal and other bits & pieces can be tossed straight into the water. All the table will need is water as there is a light on the ramp which gives good coverage of the table area. A consultation sign will go up shortly with the table being manufactured asap to get it in asap. Refer the attached for the design of the table, fairly basic but anything is better than nothing.
