7 At Bunnings in Malaga This will be held on Saturday 16 th July 2016 Volunteers are required to help throughout the day even for an hour. Please contact Greg Walker on with your offer of help or and put the subject heading ATT: Sausage Sizzle before 10 th July 2016 so that rosters can be made. These fundraisers allow the Beachcombers club to pay for things such as insurance and to subsidise Field Days for club members. Please support your club by helping with this event. 7

9 May 28 th & 29 th 2016 Field Day Report Swan River & Cockburn Sound AAA State Estuary Event Weather Conditions: Saturday had cold SW winds, partly cloudy with occasional showers, then fine and mild up by Sunday. This field day was held at the same time and place as the AAA State Estuary Competition. The Beachcombers signed only two members for the Comp: Mark H and Peter S. Pete was a late starter, as he was busy playing with his truck. Mark began by fishing slightly upstream of the old traffic bridge, catching a blowie and a small butterfish before Pete showed up mid afternoon. We took stock of the catch so far and decided that the more fruitful option would be to venture to Cockburn Sound and try our luck there, so drove to Woodman s point, found the last two available parking bays and witnessed the crowded rocks of keen anglers casting allsorts of rigs and baits into the water. So we set up our gear and soon discovered that there was more weed caught than fish, and more blowies than weed, that could strip a bait in nanoseconds. After a half an hour of feeding the blowies, we thought we d try from the little beach to the east and maybe land a whiting or two. Walking along the path we saw that some buckets had tails of sizable salmon stuck up on show. The beach had nothing fishy there apart from a long suffering kayaker making little headway into the stiff sea breeze before giving up and heading to the shore to empty the large volume of seawater from his craft. We were heading back to our original spot but notice a group of 20somethings hooking up on salmon using blue lures, so we fished adjacent to them baitcasting mulies for no result. Mark walked back to his car and dug out his Smilin Jack lure and returned to try his luck. The sun was getting low and Pete was getting cold so went back to put on the kettle for a warming cup of tea. Mark continued to cast that Smilin jack for half an hour before a salmon finally struck. On the light flick rod, the fish went on several runs for 10 minutes before getting close enough to the rocks so that the leader could be grabbed. Here the fish spat the hooks and made its dash to freedom, BUGGER! Despondently, Mark went back to vehicles and was greeted with a hot cup of tea. After a quick dinner, we fished into the evening, the blowies had clocked off and the herring had started their night shift. Pete caught one then got ready for bed and Mark bagged out with twelve by fishing till midnight. The next morning Mark tried the very tip of the point but could only get two more herring. While having a midmorning cup of tea Tony and his wife, from Fremantle club showed up and declared that there are no fish apart from the 8 salmon he and his spouse had caught less than a kilometre from our spot. The AAA weigh in was at the Cockburn Powerboat Club, there were three clubs represented: Fremantle with 15 competitors; Beachcombers with 2 competitors and Surfcasters with 1. The Fremantle club won all the firsts with snapper, salmon, tailor, skippy, goatfish, wrasse, flathead, herring, mullet, black bream, KG whiting, yellowtail scad and garfish but the Beachcombers did come second weighing in their 9 herring! For the Beachcombers Field day there were 17 fish made up of 3 species [Herring, Butterfish, Blowfish] totalling 3.97metres. Mark had the longest fish a herring at 26cm and bag at 3.72metres. Unfortunately there were no cameras, due to the forgetfulness of both the FDO and the Vice President, so no photos taken on this Field day. The competitor numbers for is FD were a little disappointing as it was local however the June FD in Emu-springs is generally well attended because of the popularity of its camp area. 11 Dry Casting Event 26 th June 2016 The Beachcombers Angling & Boating Club of WA will be holding a Dry Casting event/competition on Start time will be 8.30am Family - $10.00 Single - $5.00 Sunday 26 th June 2016 at King s Meadow Polo Ground, Meadow Street, Guildford. Events will be: 56gram Artificial Bait 112 gram Double and Single Hand Accuracy All members and visitors are welcome! 12 June Munchies Egg & Bacon Pies 6 rashers thinly sliced bacon, rind removed 6 eggs 1 cup (240g) crème fraîche or sour cream 2 tablespoons flat-leaf parsley leaves 1. Preheat oven to 180 C (350 F). 2. Grease 4 x 12cm round pie tins and line each with 1½ rashers of bacon. 3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, crème fraîche and parsley. 4. Pour the egg mixture into the tins and bake for 25 minutes or until the bacon is crisp and the egg filling is just set. 5. Serve with hot buttered toast. Bacon, Sour Cream & Chive Baked Potatoes 4 medium desiree potatoes (see Notes) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 middle bacon rashers, trimmed, finely chopped 2 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped 1/3 cup sour cream 1/2 cup smoked cheddar, finely grated Step 1: Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced. Put potatoes on a baking tray. Drizzle with oil. Season with salt and pepper. Bake for 45 minutes or until tender. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly. Increase oven temperature to 220C/200C fan-forced. Step 2: Meanwhile, heat a small non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add bacon. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until golden and crisp. Transfer to a bowl. Stir in chives. Step 3: Cut a slit down the length of each potato, leaving the base intact. Carefully scoop out centre flesh, leaving a 1cm-thick shell on each side. Place potato flesh in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Mash with a fork. Stir in sour cream, 1/3 cup cheddar and 2/3 of the bacon mixture. Spoon filling into potato shells. 4 Return potatoes to baking tray. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until heated through. Serve potatoes sprinkled with remaining cheese and bacon mixture. 12

13 A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird s mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird s attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to clean up the bird s vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he d hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John s outstretched arms and said I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behaviour. John was stunned at the change in the bird s attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behaviour, the bird spoke-up, very softly, May I ask what the turkey did? My Thoughts. The nights definitely have the nip of winter in them or more precisely, the mornings! There was even a bit of frost on the grass last Wednesday morning. Emu Springs sounded like a great weekend for all who went. I know that Peter enjoyed having his two daughters and granddaughter sharing his space. This is part of what our club is about spending quality time with our family. We have been looking after Daniel s dog Bear a fair bit lately. Him and Gypsy have a ball together. They can be a bit full on now that they are getting so big! He is coming for another visit this weekend while Daniel goes to Queensland for a car rally event. No sunshine though.rain is forecast over there for the whole weekend! Jennie 13
